Set in a bricked off slum, into which a rogue cop and the vigilante prince of the ghetto must venture to retrieve a bomb, and rescue a damsel in distress. Witty and wistful, this sly, funny ‘oddcouple’ movie is an example of the value of small-scale cinema. Arriving in a small French town with the intention of robing a bank, taciturn thief Milan is befriended by a garrulous former schoolteacher who is about to undergo bypass surgery. Johnny Hallyday (the ‘French Elvis’) surpasses himself in conveying the inner sensitivity of a hardened criminal whose edgy existence has left little room for comfort or trust. But it’s Hallyday’s unexpected chemistry with the rueful, charming Rochefort that binds this melancomic tale into a credible, intimate whole.
