WELCOME The Courtyard, in it’s 20th Anniversary year, is delighted to welcome Orchestra of the Swan as our resident orchestra. Not only will they perform an exceptional programme of orchestral concerts at The Courtyard but we will be working with them as part of our ongoing programme with schools and through our work with Creative Ageing, delivering projects out in the community of Herefordshire. As well as this, Orchestra of the Swan will be performing rural concerts throughout Herefordshire at local, intimate village venues, in association with Arts Alive. The Courtyard are extremely excited to bring such fantastic chamber orchestra music, and a wealth of talented conductors and soloists, to the people of Herefordshire on a regular basis. Watch Orchestra of the Swan once, with their exceptional skill and refreshing energy, and you won’t miss them again.

Tai Murray plays Mendelssohn Main House, The Courtyard Hereford

Friday 2 November 2018 | 7.30pm Mozart Mendelssohn Mendelssohn Mozart

Overture to The Marriage of Figaro Violin Concerto in E minor String Sinfonia no6 in Eb Symphony no25

conductor Julian Lloyd Webber violin Tai Murray A wonderful opportunity to compare the relatively youthful and mature works of two of the most celebrated – but sadly, shortest-lived – musical prodigies. Performed by American violinist Tai Murray who made her concert debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra when she was only nine!

Tickets £21 20% off when booking for all three concerts at The Courtyard

Peter Donohoe plays Mozart Main House, The Courtyard Hereford

Friday 8 February 2019 | 7.30pm Elgar Mozart Elgar Mozart

Serenade for Strings Piano Concerto no27 Introduction and Allegro Symphony no31 ‘Paris’

piano/director Peter Donohoe Elgar’s Serenade for Strings complements the composer’s earlier lucid way with orchestration. Add in some woodwind and you have the perfect backing for Peter Donohoe’s thoughtful interpretation of this, Mozart’s last – somewhat melancholic – piano concerto (its first performance being the composer’s last public appearance). But then mix in some clarinets, trumpets and timpani and we have the twenty-two-year-old Mozart at his most vigorous – as is Elgar’s stirring Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra: again glancing backwards to become one of the greatest concerto grossos ever composed.

Tickets £21 20% off when booking for all three concerts at The Courtyard

Nicholas Daniel plays Strauss Main House, The Courtyard Hereford

Friday 17 May 2019 | 7.30pm Ravel Strauss Strauss Ravel

Pavane pour une infante défunte Oboe Concerto, TrV 292 Metamorphosen Le Tombeau de Couperin

conductor Michael Seal oboe Nicholas Daniel We welcome the City of Birmingham’s associate conductor, Michael Seal – “one of the CBSO’s best-kept secrets” – to direct a concert that illustrates the differing ways two twentieth-century composers approached and portrayed death. As depressing as this may sound, it makes for some of the most glorious music ever written. Richard Strauss’ heart-rending Metamorphosen for twenty-three strings – an elegy for the destruction of culture, written at the end of both the Second World War and the composer’s life (as was the Oboe Concerto) – though, will be hard to surpass.

Tickets £21 20% off when booking for all three concerts at The Courtyard

Foyer Concerts at The Courtyard As part of the residency, Orchestra of the Swan will be performing special small scale concerts in The Courtyard’s foyer space before selected shows throughout the year: Show: Swan Lake Date: Monday 12 November 2018 Show: The Verdict Date: Thursday 14 February 2019 Show: A Brave Face Date: Monday 25 February 2019 Show: Bay City Rollers Date: Thursday 11 April 2019 Foyer Concert: 6.30pm Show: 7.30pm

Community Projects As part of the residency, Orchestra of the Swan will be working closely with The Courtyard’s Creative Ageing team to deliver interactive music sessions and performances in care homes around Herefordshire. As the first dementia friendly arts venue, The Courtyard have a strong commitment to delivering creativity to the local community. The aim is to combat isolation and improve personal independence by allowing older people to become more active and creative; improving health, well-being and quality of life. Orchestra of the Swan will also be delivering a unique project in conjunction with The Courtyard’s Education & Participation team at local schools. The Orchestra will work with the children to develop a concert to be performed at The Courtyard for friends and family in April 2019. To help children become more creative, we need to foster their curiosity from a young age which is why The Courtyard works with schools all over Herefordshire to deliver quality arts projects. We believe that giving children creative experiences, gives them a rich and memorable childhood. We work with schools to lay the foundation of creative expression for a lifetime.

HEREFORD CATHEDRAL Did you know that you can listen to Choral Evensong from Hereford Cathedral in your home or at your desk? The recording of services began in the autumn of 2015, when a new sound system was installed allowing those unable to be with us in person to participate in the worship that is central to the life of Hereford Cathedral. Services sung by our choir are regularly recorded and uploaded to our website. For more information or to sign up for email alerts visit: www.herefordcathedral.org/webcasts
