Dubai - Diane Ware, Cruise Specialist The Desert Safari and BBQ under the Stars is really something else... and perfect if you enjoy a little adrenalin rush pre-dinner. My highlight of this excursion was definitely the dinner under the stars aspect. Bedouin-style tents and furniture set the scene, accompanied by traditional music and belly dancers as your entertainment. As night falls around you the lights are turned off, giving you a sense of just how remote the desert can be, but when you look up the expanse of stars is nothing short of amazing. I can also recommend the cruise along Dubai creek - you’re surrounded by the traditional dhows and luxury yachts, it’s a real contrast; yet another great example of how the old and new go hand-in-hand in this incredible city.
Been there, done that
Abu Dhabi - Darren Hilsdon, Cruise Specialist With its modern skyline and captivating sunsets, Abu Dhabi is the real jewel of the Emirates. A fantastic mix of old heritage, modern amenities and abundant wealth. One of my highlights was the Sheikh Zayed mosque. It’s the largest mosque in the Emirates, and can accommodate an incredible 31,000 worshippers. It’s a sight to behold, both out and inside... chandeliers hold millions of Swarovski crystals and columns are masterpieces of craftmanship clad in marble and inlaid with mother of pearl. To say that it’s beautiful would be an understatement, this is truly a place of worship. Of course for all the petrol heads, there is another place of worship available... Ferrari World is not to be missed, and offers a worthwhile day out for the kids (big and small!).
Been there, done that
Manama - Gill Williams, Cruise Specialist The port of Khalifa Bin Salman is about 20 mins from the main areas and sites that Bahrain has to offer. The port itself is an industrial working port and you’e not permitted to walk around on your own so booking excursions is a must, and there’s plenty to choose from. As I was with my Mum, we did not opt for the Bahrain F1 International Circuit, but for any budding Grand Prix fans this was highly recommended by those that did visit it. Instead we headed off to Qal’at al-Bahrain - Also known as Bahrain Fort, located close to Manama and dates back to 2300 BC. In 2005 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an example of 4,500 years of unbroken human habitation - fascinating if you’re interested in learning a little Emirati history. There’s a small museum with a few artifacts and, of course, a cafe near the site.
