THE
2018 COLLECTION
River Cruising in Europe, Russia & Southeast Asia
Hello and welcome to the second issue of our river cruise brochure. I am pleased to say that this year has been a series of success stories for RiverCruising.co.uk. We are an awardwinning company which has also been recognised with a 5 Star Feefo Status. You will read more about this as you browse through. RiverCruising.co.uk, (although part of the Travel Village Group) offers a completely different holiday experience to that of a Cruise Village ocean cruise. You simply cannot compare the two like for like and this is effectively reflected in the price. In this brochure we have changed things around and focused on the rivers themselves. What they have to offer, and where they will take you are important considerations. Whether you are considering your first river cruise, or whether you are a river convert and are looking for a new experience. Hopefully we can point you in the right direction and because we have selected some of the hottest deals, it should help you to match the river with the cruise line most suited to you. Talking of which, the river cruise lines each put their own twist on the on board experience and my advice to you is - speak to one of my river cruise experts who will find out what makes your holiday special to you and then match you up with the most appropriate river cruise line. You will be amazed what we know - almost everything - and just how important it is to share this with you. We are the UK’s number one river cruise experts and all our team are river cruisers, so you could not be in safer hands. We are sending more people away, every day, to experience life on a river right at the heart of the towns, villages and cities along the way. Thank you for your business and for your generous independent Feefo feedback, it means the world to me and my team and I do reply to every single one! We look forward to helping you choose your next adventure on the river!

So easy to complete my booking
The ease with which they handled my booking. The staff were very knowledgable and made it so easy for me to understand all my options. I was fully booked and ready to go within minutes.
I would use them again and have already recommended them to our friends
Knowledgeable polite, professional, very helpful, good customer service,
Professional, caring booking process.
I cannot praise Gillian highly enough for her kind, courteous and professional service when helping us book our river cruise. She talked me through everything, even things I hadn’t thought of, and was extremely patient!
Pleasant, professional and painless.
Vicky was so pleasant, knowledgeable and professional. Having explained the itinerary that we wanted and the time of year we wanted to go, Vicky said she would research the best deal for us and phone us back shortly which she did. I found the whole process easy and pleasant, having used your sister company for sea cruising, once again I have been very pleased with the service provided and would certainly have no hesitation in recommending your company.

A SWEET FRENCH TOWN AND A SWEET FRENCH WINE Sample some of France’s sweetest wines in the town that produces them. You will join your guide and drive across the Garonne River into the prestigious Sauternes appellation, where lush vineyards blanket the countryside, fed by the river’s waters, rich soil and Atlantic breezes. Thomas Jefferson himself, America’s third president, counted Sauternes among his favourite wines during his visits. You will enjoy a short scenic drive to one of its châteaux to learn how these prized wines are made. You might be surprised to learn that a fungus is central to cultivating a successful crop of Sémillon, Sauvignon blanc and Muscadelle grapes. You will be invited to work in the vineyard if you’d like, a unique chance to connect with the land that produces this tasty fruit. Then, you will have a chance to taste a few of the wines and see if you agree with Jefferson. INCLUDED WITH VIKING RIVER CRUISES

DANUBE, FROM GERMANY TO THE BLACK SEA River cruising on the Danube could take you past four capital cities, a feat no other river in the world can match. Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and Belgrade sit grandly on its banks. Fairytale castles cling precariously to hillsides. Medieval monasteries stand sentinel over the river. And the Iron Gate gorge between Serbia and Romania makes for a dramatic, exhilarating sail. The Danube is extremely popular because you sail through UNESCO World Heritage regions such as the stunning Wachau Valley. You are able to choose the easy paced cycling excursions which take you even closer to the heartbeat of this beautiful countryside. Europe’s second longest river flows through the heart of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire. Travel it, and you’re tracing a history of imperial Europe through its architecture, music and food.

DANUBE MORE ABOUT THE DANUBE... The Danube River is undoubtedly one of the most popular choices when it comes to selecting a river cruise holiday! Flowing through a total of 10 different countries, stretching over two thousand miles from Germany to the Black Sea, the Danube is enormous! Rich in European culture; art, music, literature and culinary delights, a river cruise along the Danube will not disappoint. The river is made up of three sections, the upper, the middle and the lower – all of which are accessible on a river cruise. No matter which itinerary you choose, you’ll visit an array of medieval towns and grand historic cities.
Cruise the lower Danube, often between Budapest and the Black Sea, for a Balkan adventure. Or cruise the upper Danube, often from Budapest to Passau (or in reverse) and take in Vienna - Austria’s capital & “the city of music”, Melk Abbey and the Wachau Valley.

Marzipan is a favorite confection in Budapest, and Szamos has specialized in making it since the 1930s, so you might want to try some—but the shop’s truffle selection is equally irresistible. Refreshed, you’ll be ready to hop back on the tram for a visit to the gracious green spaces of Kårolyi Garden, sometimes described as Budapest’s most charming small park. DOURO, PORTUGAL The River Douro starts its journey to Porto up in the hills of Soria in Northern Spain. The river is a little over 500 miles long but is only really navigable from Vega de Terron on the Spanish Portuguese border and through Portugal to Porto where your river cruise holiday starts and ends. Much of your journey along the river Douro takes you through steep sided vineyards and a countryside which hosts monasteries, castles and baroque mansions. DUTCH WATERWAYS River cruising Belgium and Holland’s waterways is like nowhere else on earth. Big sky stretches all the way to a flat horizon, punctuated by historic cities, gorgeous villages and fields that really do teem with tulips (in Spring at least) and windmills. It’s like falling into a Dutch masterpiece. Technically speaking, once you take to Holland and Belgium’s waterways you’re no longer river cruising. Instead you’ll journey on Europe’s most extensive network of canals and waterways, all fed by the Rhine. And because it’s so latticed by water, there’s no better way of exploring this gentle landscape than by ship.

RHINE, FROM THE SWISS ALPS TO THE NORTH SEA They say the Rhine is a river for romantics. Yet as Europe’s busiest waterway it’s also a river of trade, culture and history. Explore the river that remains the beating heart of Europe. It’s easy to think of the Rhine as a purely German river - and many Rhine river cruises concentrate on the German mid-section, letting you explore in gratifying depth. Yet the river’s course also takes in Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein and the Netherlands. That means your river cruise on the Rhine could take you from Basel’s museums to Holland’s windmills via the Black Forest and the World Heritage Site splendour of the Rhine Valley.
For wine connoisseurs, culture lovers, Europhiles, history buffs, romantics and foodies, Rhine river cruising is an epic journey of discovery. Here are just some of the highlights: Basel, Switzerland’s third city and an intriguing mix of Swiss, German and French culture. Koblenz, few nations mark the joining of two rivers quite like Germany does at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle. Strasbourg, a captivating blend of French and German, enjoy strolling the winding alleys of La Petite France, Strasbourg’s Old Town. Heidelberg, a historic old town, stunning castle and Germany’s oldest university. Rüdesheim, a classic Rhine Valley wine town, just upstream from the Rhine’s most breathtaking stretch – the Rhine Gorge.

RUSSIA River cruising the Russian Waterways isn’t like river cruising in the rest of Europe. To most travellers, there’s a sense of the unknown as you take to the water. It doesn’t feel quite European. It does feel distinctly adventurous. This is a land that frequently meets the stereotype (you will see fields of potatoes and beetroot) yet more often surprises you with its grandeur and style.
The Volga and the Volga-Baltic Waterway link Moscow and St Petersburg. River cruising between the two is the perfect way to explore a country still rarely travelled. It’s a perpetual world of contrasts. Hulking engineering feats (eg the locks that raise you 400m above sea level by the time you reach Moscow) sit self-consciously along the river bank from dark forests and tiny villages. You’ll travel the Moscow-Volga canal, dug by gulag prisoners in the 1930s. On the Volga River itself you’ll follow part of the route taken by Peter the Great as he fought to expand the Russian Empire. And on the delta of the River Neva, you’ll marvel at the city he founded in 1703: St Petersburg.

With 101 islands, 66 canals and hundreds of bridges, St. Petersburg is considered Russia’s most beautiful city, and its most Western. Almost perfectly planned, its beauty lies in the harmonious blend of Russian and European architecture. Pass by St. Isaac’s Cathedral - the largest church in the city, dedicated to Peter the Great’s patron saint.

MOSCOW Red Square is the beating heart of Moscow, and an icon of Russia. Home to the country’s most famous landmarks, this vast public square has been at the centre of Russia’s political affairs since the 13th century, a fact which earned it UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1990. The square is flanked by some of the country’s most significant landmarks, including The Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and of course, the familiar coloured domes of Saint Basil’s Cathedral. SEINE, FRANCE France’s second longest river does something the Loire (the longest) can’t. It flows through Paris. There’s little to compare with journeying beneath the city’s 37 bridges, past some of the world’s most recognisable landmarks. Yet there’s so much more to river cruising on the Seine than Paris’ many attractions. Gothic drama. Timbered, medieval history at the water’s edge. Impressionism inspiring scenery. And the beaches of Normandy. From its source near Dijon to its estuary at Le Havre, river cruising on the Seine is a time travelling journey of farmland unchanged in hundreds of years, and a modern Paris, bursting with drama. River cruising on the Seine inevitably means Paris. But whether this is your first visit or your 21st, the energy and ever changing nature of the city means there’s always something new. If you need to tick off the ‘must-dos’ of the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Louvre and Arc de Triomphe, you’ll find reality infinitely better than any number of movies and photos. And if you’ve visited before, make this the occasion to get off the beaten track, or fill in the gaps from previous visits. And of course, there’s no better way of entering Paris than by the river.

TASTES OF CALVADOS & CIDER Pommes, apples in English, play an important part in the history of Normandy, with apple orchards taking root in Roman times. While the first cider was said to have been distilled in 1553, before that the Norman apple was used in poultices, ointments and cosmetics (hence the term “pommade”). With over two thousand varieties of apples, Normandy is naturally proud of its cider and of its Calvados – apple brandy, for which this region is also famous. Visit a local farm for a taste of both. ASIA THE YANGTZE Behind the 610ft tall, 1.3 mile wide walls of the Three Gorges Dam sits a reservoir half the length of California. From its Terracotta Army to the Great Wall, so much of China is on a different scale. River cruising on the Yangtze the best way to see it all. Asia’s longest river carves its way from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea. On its journey it passes stunning natural beauty and incredible feats of engineering (ancient and modern).
THE MEKONG The world’s 12th largest river originates in China ending at the South China Sea via Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. People have been living and working on the banks of the Mekong for over 4,000 years, and they still do. They fish in it. They live above it (you’ll see stilt houses as you river cruise through the Mekong Delta). Its water irrigates their paddy fields. And during the Vietnam War, they fled across it to safety.
THE IRRAWADDY Leave the familiar behind and explore a beautiful, and often mesmerising, country that has long been off-limits to the rest of the world via the Irrawaddy - Burma’s most important waterway. People living by it rely on it for survival. Barges, bamboo rafts and fishing boats plod sedately along its length. You’ll pass oxen pulling carts in the fields that line the banks. Children run excitedly alongside you, trying to keep up with your ship. Nowhere else does river cruising make you feel as though you’re helping - even in a small way - to put a nation back on its feet.

Visit one of the best preserved sections of the Great Wall and view the burial site of emperors. Begin with a drive to the Badaling Hills, the highest point of the Guangou Gorge, to the astonishing Great Wall. During your visit, you will learn the fascinating history and legend of this engineering marvel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that once stretched for more than 6,200 miles. Later, stroll the Sacred Way of the Ming Tombs, situated in a beautiful valley that emperors chose as their burial place. Upon arrival, follow the long and beautifully manicured entrance to the tombs. This tree-lined avenue is guarded by 18 pairs of massive sculptures of elephants, lions, camels and mythical beasts.
