WHO WE ARE

Trading from the same street, Highfield Road, South Shore, in Blackpool our multi award winning travel business has been trading now for an incredible 60 years! That makes The Travel Village one of the UK’s longest trading 4th generation family businesses! Most of our clients know us for our flagship brand, The Cruise Village which has been selling ocean cruise holidays since 2002, but there is so much more to our business...let me give you an insight into how it all started and where we are today, 60 years on.

OUR HISTORY

blackpool’s BOURNE LEGACY My grandad, Eric Capey Bourne, served his country in the Reconnaissance Corps, or simply Recce Corps during the Second World War. This was a corps of the British Army, formed during the Second World War whose units provided the mobile spearhead of infantry divisions. It was formed from infantry brigade reconnaissance groups on 14 January 1941. Eric married Lena Elizabeth Podmore in 1942 whilst serving on the continent with the Corps which then became part of the Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) in 1944. Eric and Lena moved to Blackpool from Stoke on Trent in 1959 and, with little or no money, started to sell theatre tickets, train tickets and coach tours from the post office. Then in the early 1960’s Eric applied for, and obtained his ABTA license for Bourne Travel, ABTA 15985. From the moment they began selling holidays, customer care became the focus of everything we do. In those early years, Eric used to cycle up and down Blackpool Promenade collecting deposits from the land ladies who were booking their winter holidays to Benidorm once the Blackpool Illuminations had finished, on the 1st weekend of November. That personal service and attention to detail is today, still very much the DNA of our family business.

WHAT MAKES US

SPECIAL

4th Generation Family Business established over 60 years

where the customer experience comes first People often ask me what makes the business so special? It’s not a cliche to say - the team, the people I work with. Judging by the number of personal emails I receive, and reply to each week, my team must be doing something right!

We recognise that there is a significant difference between just being nice people, and being nice people who care and take a real interest in the important, finer details of your holiday. It’s one of the many reasons why we’ve been voted “Best Cruise Agency” for 4 years in a row! (In fact it’s 7 times in the last 10 years! )

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT...

Cycling & E-bikes Holidays If you like getting out and about during your holiday, remaining active whilst still relaxing, and being at the heart of everything that is scenic about the destination you’re visiting, then this might just be the perfect solution... Cycling holidays have grown in popularity over the years, and more recently e-bikes have made this type of holiday more accessible than ever before. E-biking is essentially all the fun of cycling, without the exhausting hard work and buckets of sweat you would expect from a conventional bike ride.

And when your next night’s stay taken care of, and your luggage sent ahead, you can focus on enjoying the ride! WE’VE BEEN THERE...

India's Golden Triangle What is the ‘Golden Triangle’? At a glance, it’s the 3 most visited cities in North-West India: Delhi, Agra & Jaipur. Visitors usually begin in Delhi, India’s capital, then travel South to the famous Taj Mahal in Agra before heading West to the desert of Rajasthan, key highlight here being Jaipur, the Pink City.

We sent Jess Nuttall (The Travel Village’s 4th generation!) on a taster trip to India, with Cosmos, that would not only take in these iconic sites, but also the Tigers of Ranthambore. Here she lets us know about just a few of her trip highlights.

India… what can I say – It’s one of the most, if not the most, interesting travel experiences I’ve had. And interesting in a good way! It might not be at the top of everybody’s bucket list, but experience now tells me that it should certainly be close!

Agra

In the city of Agra the streets were more “as I expected” from India – markets on the sides of the roads; wild cows, pigs and dogs roaming the streets; and locals hopping on and off rickshaws. And although It felt much less developed than New Delhi, It was the more traditional side of India that I was expecting to see.

Taj Mahal

We have all seen pictures, but nothing prepares you for the incredible moment you first lay your eyes on the Taj Mahal. It’s unexplainable & most definitely incomparable to anything I’ve seen before. It’s constructed entirely from marble! Having spent the previous hour at the marble factory, I now understand what an architectural masterpiece this UNESCO World Heritage Site is!

Ranthambore

Jaipur

The capital of Rajasthan, and known as the “Pink City”. Entering Jaipur felt special, instantly you could feel a more vibrant atmosphere. It’s named the Pink City because, first and foremost, everything in the old quarter is pink (or shall we say slightly more apricot now). Why pink? It’s the colour of hospitality. The top attractions here are the Palace of Winds (Hawa Mahal) - a truly stunning complex of buildings, gardens, temples and courtyards; and, sitting atop a hill overlooking the town, Amber Fort. The best (and most fun) way to get up the hill is definitely by jeep! We travelled through the old town, and even stopped for a photo opportunity with a snake charmer! What a place… there was never a dull moment! From the bus journeys and walking tours to the incredible palaces, the Golden Triangle was everything I expected and more. Each destination brought a deeper insight into the local culture and way of life. I just wish I’d been on an extended tour so that I had more time to explore... But now it just means that I have to go back!

Ranthambore is home to a National Park, and people travel far and wide to join a safari in hope of seeing wild tigers! The safari is a fun-filled 3 hour highspeed trip in an open-top jeep through the National Park with guides looking out for the elusive Indian tigers. As crazy as it sounds, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll see a tiger… in fact, some of the guides here sometimes go a full week without seeing one, and the time of year you visit at can be a factor. Travelling in June turned out to be a good time of year... the tigers came out of hiding to drink from the lakes, due to the heat!

A DIFFERENT VIEW ON...

Florida

F

lorida, the name of the North American state itself usually conjurs thoughts of fast and crazy rides, famous movie and cartoon characters, and general family fun. And that’s all true, if you’re only thinking of Orlando.... Jess Clayton, from our marketing team, and her partner headed to the Sunshine State for a week prior to boarding a Caribbean cruise, with the intention of finding amazing things to do and see, without touching on the theme parks.

W

e began with a town called Celebration - it’s a mere 20 minute drive away from the hubbub of International Drive (and thoroughly enjoyable in a Mustang!). We discovered an absolutely charming town, full of traditional shops, eateries and boutique/craft shopping. And, following a recommendation from a friend at Experience Kissimmee, we were here for a day of bike hire. We opted for a couple of trikes (they just looked more fun!) and headed off on the boardwalk trail - it’s about 7 miles and takes you through gorgeous conservation areas and neighbourhoods (think Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives, or even the Truman Show... the houses are beautiful!!). There’s some incredible wildlife to be discovered on the route - we saw several alligators, bald eagles, hawks, egrets, and small lizards. We sat, with a picnic, by a gorgeous lake about half way around, watching for alligators to pop their heads up.! Celebration is a planned community, designed on Disney’s idea of an ideal American town, and

in my opinion well worth a visit; in fact we enjoyed it so much we came back a couple of days later for a 10km run on the boardwalk! e had pre-booked the Florida Adventure Tour which included swimming with manatees at Crystal River, a visit to Homosassa State Park and an airboat ride. This is a full on day out! The waters of Crystal River are super clear (hence the name!) and surroundings are gorgeous. Provided with snorkel masks and pipe we headed into the water on noodles - to help with buoyancy for passive observation - and we were lucky enough to see a whole family of manatees resting, rising to the surface for air and swimming underneath us. We even got to watch a manatee calf nursing! Absolutely magical! The day ends on an adrenaline high - Wild Bill’s Airboat Tour. Don’t leave without a photoof yourself holding a baby alligator, which you can do for $3.

reach for the stars.

W

The airboat ride itself was epic! Super fast and exciting, with plenty of time slowed down and stopped to observe the wildlife - which included some recently hatched baby alligators, turtles (just hanging out next to a fully grown alligator!) and so many different kinds of birds it was impossible to count them all. hether you believe we landed on the moon or not, I thoroughly recommend you make a visit to the Kennedy Space Center. Your jaw will drop the moment shuttle Atlantis is revealed, and you’ll be left momentarily speechless by the sheer size of the colossal Saturn V rocket. This is honestly one of the most incredible places I’ve ever visited, and it also pays poignant homage to those that have paid dearly for our quest to

W

We had “Lunch with an Astronaut” included, and this is well worth the extra. Not only do you get a catered buffet lunch, but you get to meet a real-life, bona fide astronaut, ask them questions and hear fascinating stories. hat do you do with less than 48 hours in Miami before joining a cruise? Rather than just tick off sunbathing on South Beach and strolling the Art Deco district, we also explored Wynwood. It really is the art district, and Wynwood Walls is a fantastic venue to visit and wander around by day or evening. There’s some very trendy bars and great restaurants in the area, which in my opinion are better quality than, and don’t charge you quite as much as, some places closer to the beach. In the evening we had a very special experience planned... Stand Up Paddleboarding at Sunset. The company we went with are non-profit (Rise Up Adventures and this is something we booked ourselves privately for about $40pp), using the money to provide enriching experiences to women that have experienced trauma. After a quick briefing and instruction we were all stood up (I might have fallen off a few times...) on our boards enjoying the magical skyline of Miami at sunset. They even take photos for you and supply them to you as part of the package. An amazing experience that I’m sure to remember for a very long time!

WE LOVE...

River Cruising As “The River Cruise Experts” we try to ensure that absolutely every member of our team here has experienced at least one river cruise for themselves. We sent Becky to experience Amadeus River Cruises’ newest addition to their fleet, Amadeus Queen.

Having enjoyed many ocean cruises before, I was excited to experience my first river cruise - sailing along the stunning Rhine river. After the short flight to Amsterdam, we were transferred to the central river cruise terminal, and I was astonished to see how beautiful the ship looked! A quick and smooth embarkation was followed by a light lunch in the Panorama Lounge, where the crew offered us a sumptuous buffet. Our room was a French Balcony, and honestly my jaw dropped to the floor as soon as I stepped into the cabin. I knew from earlier research that Amadeus offer exquisite and relaxing rooms but the cabin completely exceeded my expectations - it’s elegant and contemporary with a spacious bathroom. The wow factor comes from the main window which lowers at the touch of a button, offering a panoramic view - yes, it is just as mesmerising as it sounds. We were invited back to the Panorama Lounge to meet our Cruise Director, Lorelai. I honestly didn’t realise just how involved cruise directors were in the dayto-day running of the ship! Lorelai was absolutely wonderful - always

available if we had any questions and constantly had a smile on her face - really reassuring, especially for solo travellers worried about travelling on their own. Each evening we would be provided with information for the following day excursions, itinerary, timings, and even weather reports. We set off for an afternoon city tour of Amsterdam. We had an incredible tour guide who was both informative and entertaining. We were provided with complimentary state-of-the-art audio headsets for all excursions so you can hear your tour guide with no interference. I should mention that excursions aren’t included in the cruise fare with Amadeus, however excursions/bundle packages are available at a discounted rate when you purchase them before you travel. On board, we were treated to an amazing local shanty choir performance - definitely one of the cruise highlights for me! Everyone joined in singing a mixture of Irish and local Dutch songs. It was lovely to sit and enjoy some entertainment while sipping on a nice hot coffee and a slice of cake. That evening we returned to the Lounge for the inclusive cocktail reception and canapes, followed by the Welcome Dinner in the Panorama Restaurant.

WOW! What can I say?! The food was absolutely fantastic! And, it’s such a relaxing experience to watch the world go by while enjoying the finest cuisine. Free flowing quality red and white wines from Europe’s famous wine regions, draft beer and soft drinks, as well as tea and coffee are included with every lunch and dinner service - they’re not shy with the top ups either!

The following day we arrived in Antwerp and, within minutes, we were on our next excursion! This is where you’ll notice one of the main differences between river and ocean cruising - the proximity of where your ship docks to the points of interest. Once again, our tour guide was fantastic, they have so much passion and knowledge of the area making it an enjoyable and memorable experience. Back on board, we were greeted with a glass of Belgian beer, a lovely touch after an enjoyable morning.

In the afternoon, we also spent some time in the tranquil and relaxing Amadeus Club. Here you can take a swim in the indoor pool, grab a coffee or just read a book it’s a beautiful area to recharge your batteries after a fun-filled day out. The whole atmosphere on board is so welcoming and friendly, everyone from guests to staff are all part of one big family. The crew are so attentive, they really go that extra mile to make you feel welcomed, relaxed and above all entertained. The lounge and restaurant areas are so airy and spacious - they’re immaculate, colourful and tastefully decorated. The dining room can actually seat around 185 guests even though the vessel carries just 162 passengers maximum, meaning no one ever has to grab that last seat. The food, oh the food! I cannot accurately put into words the effort that must go into preparing the incredible spreads on offer at breakfast and lunch, and the wonderful table service at dinner! I would 100% recommend the Amadeus Queen to those looking for a Rhine river cruise offering a contemporary and luxurious ship, with delicious food and a familyfriendly feel on board.
