WELCOME

Welcome to the second issue of The Village Post by The Travel Village Group. This edition includes all the news, reviews and interviews you need for your next trip

W

elcome to our Spring/Summer edition of our in-house magazine, The Village Post, with a few fresh ideas and advice on what to do for your summer holidays. For this issue, my team challenged me to describe what makes the perfect holiday. Plus, we outline some of the changes we have been busy making to the business, which will add even more benefits and security for you, before you travel. I think it is fair to say that everyone has their own opinion about what makes the perfect holiday. The weather and the people you either travel with, or meet, will undoubtedly feature high on this list. In my opinion, it is best to explore with an open mind. Try new experiences and, and be prepared to experience new destinations, in your quest to find the perfect holiday. To illustrate this, I have two new entertaining additions to the Post. Each issue will now feature an interview with one of our customers as well as a member of my team, as we ask them some serious and quirky questions about travel. I think we can all agree that technology makes all of our lives eaier – when it works. Well, it will come as no surprise to you that more of our time is being spent helping you with questions about the cruise lines’ online check-in procedures. In some extreme cases we have become an emergency service when you consider just how important a holiday is to us Brits. One of the benefits of booking your holiday with my team is the reassurance that you have direct access to our personal administration support. We love speaking to you and this will continue, but in order efficiently administer your bookings (from June) we are adding a new feature to our telephone system designed specifically for pre-cruise assistance. And, even better, it is NOT automated – you get to speak to a real person! Here’s something that I am keen to make you aware of. The Travel Village and our non-cruise holiday solutions are proving to be so popular that we are having to bring more experts in to the business to help with package holidays, worldwide flights, rail holidays, escorted tours, weddings & honeymoons. Please ask our team for help with ALL your non-cruise holidays and they will find a solution or someone who can help you with 100% ATOL protection. We do not just sell cruises, we have a wealth of talented and experienced travel professionals working here within the Travel Village Group across our three core brands: The Cruise Village, The Travel Village and RiverCruising.co.uk Enjoy the Village Post Spring /Summer edition and please spread the word. Thank you for your business.

INTERVIEW

Staff: Debs Kent, finance and admin officer

“” Previous holidays have included my two daughters, but as they are both now adults it’s just me & my partner who travel these days

“” What is your favourite type of holiday and why? It’s difficult to pick just one, I love camping in the Lakes, as it is a way to get back to nature, while I love a beach holiday as you can’t beat relaxing on a sunbed with a cocktail in your hand! But then again I love, love, love Florida! Is there a song that you associate with holidays? No particular song reminds me of a holiday, my clubbing days are well over and my memory isn’t that great now... What’s at the top of your personal travel bucket list? Rome swiftly followed by the Maldives. If you had to stay in one country for the rest of your life, where would you choose and what would you do for a living? I would choose a Greek Island and have a house overlooking the sea. I’d have won the lottery so wouldn’t need to work! Who’s your dream dinner

4

party guest? My dream dinner guest would be JK Rowling, anyone who has an imagination that brilliant would be amazing to talk to.

agent, you might think you’re getting a bargain booking online with Joe Bloggs but they probably aren’t ABTA or ATOL protected and you won’t get the same service.

What three items couldn’t you do without on a desert island? My family, a good book and GHD straighteners.

Who will play you in a movie about your life? Paloma Faith.

What your best childhood holiday memory? I didn’t live in Blackpool as a child, I’m a Yorkshire girl born and bred, but my childhood memories are of travelling to Blackpool and playing “who can see the tower first” with my brother & sister. We went every year and I never won once. What’s your best bit of travel advice? Always book with a travel

What’s the most unexpected thing that’s happened to your while on holiday? I checked in at Newark airport for my flight home in April 2010 – which was delayed and then cancelled due to the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano in Iceland erupting. Volcanic ash grounded all flights and I was stranded in New York for seven days. I only had $4 left in my purse, luckily I was with my mother who had a credit card with her!

INTERVIEW

Customer: Stuart Moorhouse

“” I am 50 years old and MD of a Blackpool based bacon wholesaler. I take my holidays with my wife Caryl — in the past we’ve always gone away with our two girls, but now they’re in their midtwenties we travel light!

“”

What type of holiday is your favourite and why? Without doubt a cruise, not only does it give us the chance to visit different locations, it provides us with the perfect environment to chill out and enjoy time together. Is there a song that you associate with holidays? Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles

What’s at the top of your personal travel bucket-list? My ultimate holiday is to do a world cruise when I retire, I can’t think of a better way to see the world while relaxing at the same time. If you had to stay in one country for the rest of your life, where would you choose and what would you do for a living? I think it would be Canada, which we found to be beautiful, friendly and very clean. As for work I would chance my hand in the tourism industry which has interested me for years. Who’s your dream dinner party guest? Billy Connelly. What three items couldn’t you do without on a desert island?

Heinz Baked Beans, The Undertones Greatest Hits CD & Teabags What your best childhood holiday memory? INTERVIEW

Cruise line: Paul Ludlow, P&O Cruises

L

ast year was a busy one for P&O Cruises. Not only did it launch Britannia, the largest vessel ever built for the UK market, but it managed to get Her Majesty the Queen to sign up as godmother. A huge coup and one that generated its fair share of publicity for the company. Paul Ludlow, a Carnival veteran of 16 years, recently returned to the company after six years working at sister brand Princess Cruises. “With Britannia having launched just last year, there’s a real buzz around the place,” he tells village post. Here he explains what the company has to offer. village post:

How do you attract customers? One thing is television advertising — we’ve now developed a great relationship with Rob Brydon [above right, who appears in the line’s ‘This is the Life’ adverts]. I think people really empathise with Rob; when he’s enjoying himself on our holidays, I think they can see themselves in his place. We’ve also taken out a lot of the jargon that used to be associated with cruise holiday too. Is your success reliant on new ships?

6

Rob Brydon has become a face of the line, compèring at Britannia’s launch

What all cruise lines are doing better is differentiating their products. When you take one brand versus another, it’s become much clearer to customers about what each of those brands offer. I think as long as we, and our competitors, continue to differentiate, the market can expand exponentially.

cruise passengers do. Southampton is also an incredibly efficient port, which really does help people with their journey arrangements. We are always looking at this stuff — but we do really respond to our guests’ feedback and at the moment they are telling us it works for them.

Is the ex-UK market too heavily weighted towards the south? No — and the reason I don’t think so is because Southampton is one of the best cities in the UK in terms of access, whether people take trains or drive or even fly — as we’re increasingly seeing some of our northern

What impact has Britannia had so far? It has really evolved the P&O Cruises’ brand. There are things we’ve done on Britannia we’d never done before, such as the cookery school, by James Martin, to give one example. It’s been well received and gives us a great platform for the future.

––––– STAY ANOTHER DAY PRE- AND POST-CRUISE PACKAGES ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED WHEN IT COMES TO EX-UK CRUISES — HERE’S WHY THEY SHOULDN’T BE

–––––

PRE AND POST

T

he pre or post-stay makes perfect sense when a cruise begins or ends in the likes of Rome or Venice. Even with a stopover, you know that there is more to see and do than could possibly be squeezed into a day or two. The temptation to extend a holiday can be overwhelming when you’re faced with such beauty, history and culture. But what about ex-UK cruises? Aside from being closer and more familiar, do Dover, Southampton and the like hold enough allure to make you want to bookend a trip with stays there? Is there enough to keep you entertained? The truth is it depends how you frame the question. True, there is no coliseum on the

south coast: but there is considerable beauty to be found — from Winchester to the white cliffs of Dover. And there is plenty to do. Thinking slightly outside the box can help you reap the rewards: from a spa day in Hampshire before sailing from Southampton, to exploring the coast at Dover or even taking in a show in the West End of London before hopping on a train to Tilbury the next morning. Those travelling long distance to the south of England — where most of the cruise departures are weighted — will often want to go down the evening before to avoid a red-eye early-morning drive or train journey. So why not make the most of your extra night and try something a little different?

City break Greenwich cruise terminal is still under construction, but there are a handful cruise departures that leave from London. By train, the capital is an hour and a half from Southampton and Dover, 40 minutes from Tilbury and two hours from both Paris and Brussels on the Eurostar. The obvious suggestion is a West End show, but London is a veritable collection of great bars, restaurants and tourist spots. Although notoriously expensive, most of its galleries, museums and most famous sights are free. Another option is Winchester, just 13 miles from Southampton. The city’s Holiday Inn (at the end of A34 and just off the M3) is five minutes from the

10

centre, and offers a Park and Cruise package from £185 per room, per night (based on two people sharing) with breakfast, and transfer to the docks. It also boasts a Two AA Rosette restaurant.

With the likes of The Dover Marina Hotel — which is on the coast and just 15 minutes’ walk from the port — customers can take in the South Foreland lighthouse and Dover castle.

Sea view

Spa relaxation

With many ex-UK cruises heading to the sun-kissed, crumbling cities of the Adriatic, or the majestic Norwegian fjords, it’s easy to dismiss the English coast as second best. But there is some stunning scenery on these shores, as anyone who has ever walked Dover’s magnificent white cliffs (pictured above) can attest. Indeed, if you are heading to a port anyway, it would be a shame not to enjoy the seaside for a day before or after departure.

You may not necessarily want to explore Southampton or Harwich for a day or two before jumping on a cruise ship, but how would you feel about an extra day of relaxation pre- or postcruise? Chances are, you are pretty keen. Hampshire, in particularly, is blessed with luxury country houses with spectacular spa facilities. For example, Chilworth Manor Hotel, which is just five miles from Southampton, offers an

ozone cleansed pool, sauna and steam room, gym and beauty treatment suite.

Euro trip With Paris and Brussels directly connected to London St Pancras, we believe European river cruises can be considered the equivalent of ex-UK departures, opening up hundreds of options for airport-shy travellers. The French capital is a city to luxuriate in, where customers will want to indulge in its unbeatable food and culture, like a true Parisian. Explore hotel deals for those thinking of cruising on the Seine or heading on a wider adventure.

––––– INFOCUS CUNARD WE TAKE AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE LUXURY LINE THAT HAS BEEN CROSSING THE ATLANTIC SINCE 1840

–––––

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

11

C

unard has been carrying guests across the Atlantic since July 1840 when its first ship, Britannia, set sail from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia. But even as commercial airlines turned the journey from days to hours, Cunard has maintained an unbroken link between the two continents for 176 years. While much has changed since the ‘golden era’ of ocean liners, Cunard keeps one foot firmly in the past, from its décor to black-tie dress code and jazz-themed nights — even in an age when its luxury cruises serve destinations all over the world. Here, Cunard’s own historian, Michael Gallagher, chats to village post about

12

why the line’s past continues to inform its future. village post:What sets Cunard apart from the pack? Michael Gallagher: I do think the company has a unique history — it has been around for so long. Cunard has had such an impact on people’s lives over the century. The lives and aspirations of millions of people around the world have depended on Cunard since 1840, including the two and half million immigrants who went off to America for a new life. War records show that the company has answered the country’s call in every war from the Crimea all the way up to the first Gulf war. The ports of Liverpool

and Boston and New York grew substantially because of Cunard, and it was a Cunard ship that rescued all the survivors from the Titanic. Also, since 1840, this transatlantic link between England and America has never broken. Cunard has managed to retain a ‘golden era’ feel, but how important has its ability to adapt been? We’ve had to adapt many times. The ships themselves are ocean liner in design, look and feel, although we’ve had to tweak the dress code over the years to appeal to a younger market. Everything changes; food changes, and the entertainment has had to change over the years. The fact that aeroplanes

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

CUNARD took over the transatlantic routes meant the company had to adapt to cruising. The company has changed according to circumstance and made those transitions ever so successfully [and at the same time innovated]. It was Cunard that invented the world cruise in 1972, Cunard cruised to Cuba in the 1920s; during prohibition we had booze cruises. Tell us about Cunard’s transatlantic cruises. The Atlantic is ours, really. No one else offers this regular transatlantic service, it’s seen as uniquely Cunard and it remains Cunard’s birthright. [The entertainment] is incredibly important and it’s what people come to expect, as well. That’s why we put an emphasis on our masquerade and Royal Ascot balls [among others]. Our signature ballroom on each of the ships is called the Queen’s Room, and has the biggest dancefloor at sea. There are still people who won’t fly across the Atlantic or people who want this grand experience, a lot of people like the sea days. We get a lot of people who go from Southampton to New York and back, people who will only spend a few hours in New York. Others stay and come back much later or fly back. Sailing into New York, it’s always first thing in the morning as the city is just coming alive. It’s unusual

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

because for seven days you’ve been in this cocoon on a ship and haven’t had to deal with transport or the general hecticness of life, within an hour of leaving the ship, you can be in the middle of Times Square. What does this year hold for Cunard? It’s very exciting year because we’re refurbishing the Queen Mary 2, we’re calling it Queen Mary 2 Remastered. We’re investing in the Cunard Grills and accommodation and several

of the public rooms. In June we will have a new Queen Mary 2 to be proud about – it is the world’s most famous ship.

RIVER TITLE

T

here are many reasons why people choose to take an ex-UK cruise — but the most common one we’ve heard is that they avoid airports altogether. Some passengers simply don’t want the hassle of flying; others are unable to fly at all. But staying grounded doesn’t totally limit travel options or mean lengthy, complicated journeys as some would have you believe. Not only are there several hundred cruise departures from UK ports in 2016, there are many more European river cruises that can be reached without boarding a plane. While ex-UK cruises, of course, refer to itineraries that depart from UK ports, it seems an oversight to ignore the ever-growing river cruise market when you have a customer looking for a no-fly option.

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

Paris is just over two hours from London St Pancras International on the high-speed Eurostar, as is Brussels, where Thalys trains go on to Amsterdam (excitingly, as of 2017, a direct train will run between London and the Dutch capital). The company’s additional stops make things easier still. In Kent, there are Ebbsfleet International and Ashford International stations, as well as CalaisFréthun and Lille-Europe across the English Channel, offering connecting trains at each point. Indeed, Europe’s vast network of railway lines and waterways combine to allow travellers enormous freedom to explore the entire continent, from cities to villages and vineyards. Whether you want an extended holiday or a short Parisian getaway with a river cruise included, the

Eurostar has made things very easy indeed.

London links St Pancras International, which combines a striking red-brick Victorian façade with impressive modern interiors, renovated at a cost of £800million in 2007, is a fantastic place to begin an adventure. Holidaymakers can be in Paris, at the Gare du Nord station, in just two hours and 17 minutes. Even for those not living in and around London, in Kent, it’s a no brainer when compared with air travel. In the time it would take to check in, shuffle through security and board an aeroplane, you could have arrived and already be indulging in a bit of Parisian café culture. Of course, the French capital isn’t somewhere you want to be leaving in a hurry, so before your thoughts turn to the Seine, which snakes through the city, it’s worth looking at pre and post stays (remember, London, too, shouldn’t simply be seen as somewhere to depart from, especially for those travelling from farther afield). But while the Seine doesn’t offer as many itineraries as the Danube or Rhine, it does offer the unmissable chance to see Paris, perhaps the world’s prettiest city, from the water, as well as trips that include stops at Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny and the palace and grounds

15

TITLE

of Versailles. Tauck, for example, offers a 14-night trip that starts and ends in London, taking in Paris and the above, as well as Rouen and Aubers-sur-Oise on the Seine, as well as a visit to the beaches of Normandy. Avalon Waterways also promotes train travel with its eight-day Paris to Paris Seine cruise, which also offers an excursion to the Normandy beaches, while its extended 11-day cruise comes with three nights in London at the end. Of course, given Europe’s excellent network of railways — which stretch beyond the continent itself — customers can head where they want. But for

16

those looking to take a river cruise, Amsterdam is the place to be. While a direct train is still a year away, the journey (which takes four hours and 44 minutes with a connection in Brussels) is worth it for those who don’t want to fly. There are any number of itineraries, many of which begin and end in Amsterdam, making the return simple. Viking River Cruises, for example, offers a 10-day Tulips & Windmills cruise, which takes in the lively Dutch capital and Kinderdijk as well as Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges in Belgium. Similarly, Riviera Travel has its Amsterdam, Volendam & the Dutch Bulbfields River Cruise,

which includes a canal tour in Amsterdam and then a visit to Keukenhof Park, the 19th-century tulip park, which is as expansive as it is beautiful. On some itineraries, the line also offers customers supplemented travel from regional stations to St Pancras. One great option is the Rhine & Moselle cruise. Riviera Travel offers a coach transfer from Brussels, where the Eurostar arrives, over the border to Germany, where the cruise begins. AZAMARA

Royal Caribbean’s luxury brand has been given a facelift ready for a new season

arlier this year, Azamara Club Cruises’ two midsized ships underwent a huge, multi-million pound refurbishment. The project, which was dubbed Reimagine Azamara, saw Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest emerge from dry dock in the Bahamas and Singapore replete with major, bow-to-stern enhancements. The work, which was completed in January and April, encompassed redecorated staterooms and suites, new dining destinations and a new Sanctum Spa. Also added

was ship-wide wi-fi, plus newly transformed public spaces and venues, which, the line said, feature a “tasteful blend of contemporary and classic design.” Larry Pimentel, president and CEO of Azamara Club Cruises, said that the Reimagine project was launched to ensure that the company’s ships matched its famed shore excursions. “As we continue to evolve our destination immersive offerings, we also want to ensure our onboard experience is modernised to meet guests’ every need,” he

ounded in 2007 as Azamara Cruises, the line was rebranded in 2009 with the word ‘Club’ in its name. The company, whose president and CEO is Larry Pimentel, is part of Royal Caribbean Cruises, the second largest cruise operator in the world. However, as the smallest line within the Royal Caribbean group, it offers a very different experience to the likes Anthem or Oasis of the Seas, with a far more intimate style of cruise and focus on destination. Both its ships, sister vessels Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey, carry just 686 guests, meaning they are able to access and dock closer to land in ports where larger ships cannot, such as Marseille, Amalfi, and Crete.

We really are redefining our onboard experience in every way.” Richard Twynam, the line’s managing director in the UK & Ireland, added: “While our offerings for destination immersion have gone from strength

The line’s Destination Immersion programme also means that guests are treated to longer stays, more overnights and night touring. In fact, more than half of all Azamara port stops feature overnight or late-night stays (8:00pm or later). Included in the price are standard spirits, international beers and wines and gratuities – as well as one AzAmazing Evenings event. These private, bespoke shore excursions, for passengers on board Azamara, are perhaps what the line is best known for. Examples include an evening with the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra in Russia, an exclusive concert in Liverpool cathedral or live music and theatre in ancient Ephesus.

––––– SUN, SEA AND GOOD SLIDES MSC HAS MADE A BIG SPLASH ABOUT ITS NEW SEASIDE CLASS OF SHIPS, SAM BALLARD WRITES

–––––

MSC CRUISES

M

SC Cruises is a company with its eyes firmly on the future. Currently running an impressive fleet of 12 ships, the line has recently announced some serious expansion plans. There are now 11 ships on order – virtually doubling the already sizeable fleet – representing about ¤9 billion. Less of an expansion, more an assent on global domination. Of all the forthcoming ships, the one that has garnered the most attention is undoubtedly the gigantic MSC Seaside class. These 5,179-passenger vessels

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

look like nothing else we have seen before. The first one, which is due for delivery in 2017, will be followed by sister ships coming out in 2018 and 2021. The entire class is made for the sunshine. For that reason MSC is going to base the ships in the Caribbean year-round. There will be a massive 43,500 square metres of open areas on board, to make the most of that famous warm weather. Its unique look centres on the “beach condo” design, around the back of the ship, which is meant to bring guests

closer to the sea. Given that the ship will have its own dedicated cruise terminal at PortMiami, the curves and gentle lines of MSC Seaside look to have been influenced far more by South Beach than Southampton. The ship also boasts one of the largest and most interactive aqua parks at sea, spread over two decks. It includes an adventure trail for the youngest passengers with a timber climbing frame, sandpit and smaller slide that goes into a 5cm water pool. For the bigger kids there is a more exciting experience: Slideboarding. This 367ft

23

TITLE

ASK THE ARCITECT Could you explain the theory behind the innovative design? Seaside is a new concept in cruise ship basic layout design. It allows for easier and more natural passenger circulation between areas such as the main restaurants and show lounges and walkthrough public areas. The two lower and wide side open spaces create a stronger interaction between internal public spaces and open decks.

waterslide comes with a raft that includes a controller, making it the first waterslide-video game experience at sea. The goal is to match the flashing colours with those on the controller – easier said than done. For guests seeking an even greater thrill there is the Duelling High-Speed AquaTubes – which are spread across a huge 525ft of twists, turns and drops – even extending out beyond the side of the ship to give riders a heart-racing view of the sea far below. Inside there will be 20 speciality bars, nine restaurants and a full sized bowling alley, as well as

24

an F1 simulator. While this ship may be pulling up in paradise islands, MSC has done everything in its power to ensure that guests are perfectly happy simply staying on board, with a cocktail in hand. From December 23, 2017 until June 2, 2018 the ship will sail from Miami on seven-night itineraries to both the Western and Eastern Caribbean, calling at the Bahamas, Jamaica, Cozumel and the Cayman Islands across the two cruises. For more information, see thecruisevillage.com for more details or call us on 0800 810 8222

The beach condo has got a lot of people talking. Could you tell us how it came to be? Starting from a deep analysis of the fundamental ship design principles, we have developed a new cruise ship concept, with the aim of obtaining better functionality, higher efficiency and innovative contents. The outcome is a higher number of balcony cabins, a novel aft ship superstructure configuration that together with the two scenic glass elevators connects the upper and lower pool decks to create the so called “beach condo”. The lower large overhanging promenade on both ship sides together with the aft lido area with pools form a romantic, lively and panoramic promenade area close to the sea and well connected to the ship’s internal lounges. YOU’VE HEARD THE EXPERT. WHAT’S YOUR OPINION?

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

––––– WHAT DOES THAT INCLUDE? ARE RIVER CRUISES MORE ALL-INCLUSIVE?

ALL-INCLUSIVE TITLE

T

he question: what is included in a river cruise, is one that we hear a lot here at village post. It would be safe to assume that it is something of a grey area for many of you. Most have heard that river cruises are more inclusive than their ocean going rivals, but when it comes to the details, things start to get a bit foggy. Well, there’s no job too small for us. So, we also thought we would run through some of the basics right here.

The all-inclusive brands When trying to get a decent understanding of the river cruise industry, the easiest place to start is at the top. Like the ocean sector, there are a number of very high end operators that are allinclusive. Uniworld, Scenic, Crystal and Tauck are the river-going equivalent to

30

Seabourn and Silversea. For these operators, everything is included in the price and indulgence is key. The only real place to spend your money while on board is either in the spa or when booking a ‘specialist’ shore excursion. These can vary from out-of-this-world tours to Paul Bocuse cookery school to dinner at a private chateau.

Are drinks on the house? The most common distinguishing factor between the all-inclusive river cruise lines and the rest of the pack is your bar bill. With the aforementioned all-inclusive brands, you more than likely won’t have one at all. However, virtually every other river operator offers at least local wines and beers with dinner. It is always worth checking to see if there are drinks

packages available at the time of booking, though, if you would rather pay everything off before you even set foot on the ship. With AmaWaterways while speciality coffees are free of charge, soft drinks are put in the same bracket as alcohol. The same goes for Avalon where complimentary soft drinks are served at lunch, while regional beers and wines are included with dinner. Emerald Waterways, the sister company of Scenic, offers alcohol with lunch and dinner as well as hot drinks throughout the day. CroisiEurope includes all drinks while on board except champagne and premium wines.

Day-tripper Shore excursions are probably the distinguishing factor between river and ocean cruises. Emerald Waterways includes all of its excursions, as well as its Emerald Plus trips, which go a little deeper into a destination — like having afternoon tea with a family in Slovakia to learn more about their way of live. Cruise & Maritime Voyages river product, Signature, offers two half-day sightseeing excursions for each cruise. AmaWaterways’ cruises include a sightseeing tour in each city or town on the cruise. They also run tours for those who want to go at a slower or faster pace, as well as a late starter tours in some ports for those who

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

TITLE

want a bit more of a lie in. Shore excursions with Avalon are included in the price, except for a few additional tours, which offer a more “immersive” experience and will cost extra. A number of cruise lines (Uniworld, AmaWaterways and American Queen to name but a few) have free bicycles on board. These are typically available on a first come first served basis.

Transfers Airport transfers are a great benefit of river cruising and is something that a lot of lines include as standard. Emerald Waterways includes flights and transfers with its cruises, Riviera Travel offers

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

Eurostar tickets (or return flights for a supplement) and Viking offers a choice of either cruise only or flights included.

Wi-fi Being connected while on holiday is something that is becoming more and more important. While ocean cruise lines haven’t been as quick to get to grips with including the internet within their cruise price, river ships have been a little bit more on the ball. Uniworld, Viking, Scenic and Avalon offer free wi-fi while on board. But, be warned that the signal may become somewhat temperamental, especially when travelling through rivers with plenty of locks.

Tips With many of the cruise lines gratuities are generously included within the price of the holiday. However, it is always worth checking. AmaWaterways, for example, recommends that you give a tip of £3 per passenger per day in Europe for those who receive good service. Riviera recommends between £5 and £10 per passenger per day if you are happy with the service. Uniworld, Scenic, Emerald and Avalon all include service. AMAZING GRACE OUR MANAGING DIRECTOR JOINS TAUCK FOR THE LAUNCH OF ITS NEW SHIP

T

here is something quite special about the naming of a new ship, or in the case of river cruising, a new boat. To receive an invitation is that little bit more special and to be chosen to represent river cruising in the UK is an honor. I was on my way to attend the launch of MS Grace, a new ship for the luxury operator Tauck, which was being held in Maastricht, in the Netherlands. After a very early start, I arrived on board and made my way to the lounge for speeches by the mayor, the ship builders and of course the cruise line itself, before disembarking in preparation of the naming ceremony.

32

There is a real sense of community as people from the town sit watching from the terraces of cafés and bars beside MS Grace, listening to the local band who are the pre-naming entertainment. A few words from the Godmother and the bottle hurtles its way towards the vessel – smashing with a great cheer. It is then photographs all round before we embark on our journey to Amsterdam Tauck is a premium river cruise product, make no mistake about it, everything is included in the ticket and then some! The MS Grace, and the soon to be launched MS Joy, are ships with a huge amount of space. Where others with the same size

boat will accommodate 190 passengers, Tauck will be sailing with, on average, just 120 guests. One thing that really struck me as I walked around was the quality of the hardware and the thought that has gone into some of the public and private areas. The dining room, for example, has part of the galley incorporated into it. A great feature. It’s quite special at breakfast and dinner to have a chef inside the dining room cooking and serving fresh food. It can be an egg station in the morning or a pasta station in the evening, it just works really well. Dinner offered a varied choice of meals which, considering the

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

TAUCK space, is quite something. I particularly liked the surprises that Tauck dining is famous for, with amusebouche appearances between courses. However, my favourite had to be the pre-dinner Oyster Station! These are the sort of things that Tauck do extremely well. However, this is not a suit and tie experience. On board it is relaxed, and in the evening for dinner, it is quite sufficient for men to wear a jacket or just a smart shirt & trousers. The beds were awesome. I actually experienced my first full night’s sleep in more than ten years – fact! The bathroom was very well laid out with plenty of room and the marble/ granite effect tops were mineral and not plastic, to give that feeling of quality. My accommodation for the trip was one of the eight loft cabins located on the lower (Emerald) deck. On other European

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

riverboats the lowerlevel cabins are small, and because they’re mostly below the ships’ waterlines, they’re limited to modest, sealed windows at eye level that admit minimal sunlight and zero fresh air. Tauck’s 225 sq ft loft cabins, however, have a raised platform seating area against the ship’s outer wall with a correspondingly higher ceiling above. This allows a much taller window than can normally be found in lower-level cabins – it’s no wonder that the concept has since been honoured with a Magellan Gold award for cabin design Tauck is clearly customer focused in every detail, but what struck me was their obsession with destination experience. Shore excursions tend to feature exclusive entry into historical buildings, performances by artists in chateaux and other locations as well as visits

to vineyards along the rivers of Europe. But the simple things are done well too, such as walking tours in small groups and surprises here and there, both on and off shore. At 10am the next morning we stopped for a walking tour of Dordrecht. The cool thing was that our next stop, Kinderdijk, was a 30-minute cruise down the canal – but you didn’t need to take the journey on the boat – you could take the bikes on board and cycle. This is the beauty of taking a river cruise, you have so much freedom to do things that are impossible on an ocean cruise with almost every port of call within walking or cycling distance of a point of interest. We arrive in Amsterdam in time for a canal boat cruise with dessert and entertainment. Another Tauck treat and a lovely touch at the end of our short but brilliant trip.

merald Waterways launched in 2013, but feels anything but a newcomer. Founded as part of Scenic group by Glen Moroney, the line entered the market with its first Star-Ships, the Emerald Sky and Emerald Star, in 2014, and quickly became known for its value-for-money cruises and its fleet’s modern, clean décor. Impressively, as the line has expanded by building new ships, it has also looked to broaden its horizons beyond the Rhine and Danube, the rivers on which it launched. Now chartering the Mekong Explorer in Southeast Asia, it has also just announced plans to build two new

34

ships, the Emerald Liberte and Emerald Radiance, which will sail on some of Europe’s less-traversed rivers, the Rhone-Soane and Douro, when they launch in 2017. Here, brand manager David Winterton, talks about Emerald Waterways remarkable rise.

What makes Emerald Waterways stand out from the pack? We pride ourselves on our unique and innovative ships — a pool that turns into a cinema at night, the contemporary look and feel; in-cabin entertainment systems are powered by Apple TV. We have a very relaxed atmosphere on board the ship with a very

informal dress code; we are an Australian-owned company and many of our guests on board are Australian, and they don’t really go for the formal dress code. We also include more than most of our key competitors — such as tips.

Did you anticipate Emerald Waterways’ rapid growth? We certainly didn’t. For our first year of sailing, 2014, we built two new ships and didn’t expect to build any more for a couple of years but with 2017 sailings now on sale, we will have seven ships, all built especially for Emerald Waterways. We don’t want to be the biggest river cruise line, we want to be the best at

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

EMERALD WATERWAYS everything we do — the best ships, the best on board service, the best included shore excursion and have the best price with everything included to have a great holiday.

Talk us through the ships’ décor? It’s very modern It is very modern, contemporary, with clean lines. We have been compared with the Apple Store and the W Hotel chain. As you walk on board you enter a threefloor atrium with large exotic plants and futuristic lighting. The Horizon Bar has large floor-to-ceiling windows to watch the scenery go by and the comfy sofas are tones of grey. All cabins are fitted with white high gloss cabinets and the bathrooms have modern furnishings.

THECRUISEVILLAGE.COM

What’s included in the price? We include everything that is needed to have the perfect holiday. Flights, accommodation in one of five grades of accommodation, all onboard meals, drinks

with lunch and dinner, a daily shore excursion, free water in the cabin, free wi-fi and, most importantly, all tips saving up to £440 per couple. Our guests and the market that we are in is very much price led, in terms of what is included. The biggest challenge that the river cruise companies have are ocean cruisers who go on a cruise at £399 for a week in the Mediterranean and see our prices that are over £1,000. The challenge is for the river operators to compare like-for-like. So on board our ships, everything that is needed is included in the price versus an ocean cruise, where customers pay £399, but pay for absolutely everything once they get on board, from wi-fi to all the

35

shore excursions. From a customer point of view, ‘allinclusive’ isn’t the key, it’s value for money. They want as much as possible to be included, but they also want the price to be valuable.

The Douro and Rhone are new rivers for us in 2017. Sales on these two new itineraries have started off extremely well. The ships are being built in the same innovative features as the current ships on the Rhine, Main, Danube with just a few tweaks as they are smaller in size, such as the Radiance has a small pool on the Sun Deck to take advantage of the Portuguese weather.

The Radiance won’t have the famous Emerald Waterways cinema — was that a difficult decision to make? The pool that turns into the cinema is one of our key selling points, but the reason we’re doing it on the Emerald Radiance is that the Douro is a much

smaller river. It would have been a luxury for us to have, instead we’re moving the pool to the sundeck. But all the guests will be able to see the same films in the cabins as all the cabins have Apple TV and all the films are on that!

Are you looking to expand into Asia? That is an area we are seriously looking at. We have chartered the Mekong Navigator, that will sail for us this year and next year. Sales have been fantastic, especially with our loyal guests, who have already been with us, it’s a great alternative for them. And it’s such an amazing place, it’s certainly on our radar. he river cruise market is a broad church, but sometimes you wouldn’t know it. Of the 140,000 Britons who took river cruises in 2014, 86 per cent of them headed to Europe, according to Clia’s most recent figures. The majority of those stuck to the new duopoly of the Rhine and Danube, the latter of which saw its popularity rise by 41 per cent, putting it firmly in second place. But, beyond the headline acts, the statistics reveal a complicated landscape, particularly given the continued decline of the Nile, once the favoured river of the British traveller. The Egyptian waterway has left a huge gap in the market, while an increasingly adventurous clientele are convincing cruise lines to look further afield. There’s a reason Clia’s figures show the Mekong, in Southeast Asia, up 55 per cent, and total non-European cruises up to

19,000, a 12 per cent rise. In Europe, cruise lines continue to add capacity to the mainstays — the Rhine, Main and Moselle, and Danube — but it is a continent that offers considerable choice. The Rhone-Saone and Seine in France have seen steady growth, while Portugal’s Douro — no longer the secret it once was — could be the next big river market, with a hatful of lines now sailing there, and more heading soon. As ever with cruise, it pays to think outside the box. Not all rivers are navigable, but it’s always worth checking, remember that river cruise lines have a presence across the continent. For example, 2,900 Brits cruised the Italian Po in 2014; 2,800 the Elbe through Germany and the Czech Republic; and a further 13,400 passengers took cruises on ‘other’ European rivers. Among these others is the Guadalquivir, which snakes through sun-kissed southern

Spain, and by the grand cities and rolling green hills. You could consider CroisiEurope, which operates its 176-passenger La Belle de Cadix through Seville, Cadiz, Granada and stunning Córdoba, once capital of the Islamic Emirate ruled by the Muslim Umayyad dynasty. In fact, the operator is a specialist in offering itineraries on rivers many others don’t sail to, notably running itineraries on France’s shallow-water Loire between Saint-Nazaire and Angers. The Russian waterways remain quietly popular, rarely generating the column inches they deserve, considering the Volga, the longest waterway in Europe, connects the magnificent cities of Moscow and St Petersburg (above). For those looking east, Viking River Cruises’ Waterways of the Tsars is a great option, sailing between the two cities over 13 days, taking in Kuzino,

39

TITLE

Yaroslavl and Uglich on the way. You can also experience the two cities on eight-day trips with a variety of lines, which also call at the remarkable Kizhi Island. Even the muchtraversed Danube offers unusual delights. Emerald Waterways’ Enchantment of Eastern Europe cruise begins in Budapest and sails through Belgrade, taking in the Iron Gates, the narrow gorge between the European Alps and Carpathian Mountains, and onto Bucharest. Avalon Waterways’ 14-night Blue Danube to The Black Sea also offers sailings east from Vienna to the Romania capital. While the Nile has fallen

40

below 10,000 UK cruise passengers for the first time, a by-product of the turbulent political situation the country faces, there are still operators sailing there. Uniworld, for example, offers a fantastic 12-night return trip from Cairo (Splendours of Egypt & the Nile), with excursions that, of course, include the Pyramids of Giza and Valley of the Kings. Further south, AmaWaterways offers cruises on its Zambezi Queen, which was specifically designed for safari river cruises on the Chobe river. The line’s brilliant Rivers & Rails of Africa cruises begins with three nights in Cape Town, followed by a four-night safari cruise, two nights in

Victoria Falls, and then a three-night Rovos Rail train journey to Pretoria. Elsewhere is the Irrawaddy, in Myanmar (formerly Burma), which is fast becoming one of Asia’s top rivers, after travel restrictions to the country were relaxed. Several operators now sail there, notably Pandaw River Expeditions, which has eight ships on the Irrawaddy, as well as one on the Chindwin tributary (and Andaman Explorer coastal ship). Another great option is AmaWaterways’ Hidden Wonders of Myanmar, which begins with a night in Yangon. Customers then fly to Mandalay and embark upon a 14-night cruise that ends in Yangon.

MEKONG rivers, before making the journey back (Lunch is in the price of your holiday with one bottle of water). Upon returning, we had a few hours to explore Ho Chi Minh before dinner at Australian celebrity chef, Luke Nguyen’s Xu restaurant. A must for anyone visiting Saigon. Day 4 – Saigon Tour & Join the ship One feature of APT’s five star luxury river cruising is its Freedom of Choice Touring, which allow you to choose from a selection of tours. Today, we could go on a walking tour, take a cooking class or embark on a shopping trip. For those of you who haven’t visited Saigon, the road traffic is absolute mayhem; it is estimated that there are three million motorcycles in the city, and they do not approach junctions in the same way

that we do, often balancing six people on one bike. Our tour included visits to the Opera House, Notre Dame Cathedral and a trip through Saigon’s traffic, in a Cyclo, back to the hotel. In the afternoon we set off for the Mekong, where AmaLotus, our ship for the next seven nights, was awaiting our arrival. Once on board you’re invited to join the hotel manager in the lounge for a welcome drink followed by lunch. Day 5 – Cai Be and Sa Dec Our first excursion along the Mekong was brilliant; a boat took us through the floating markets before we came to Cai Be. We saw how foods such as coconut candy, popping rice and rice paper are made. And had some snake wine . . . made with a real snake. Something of an acquired taste.

The afternoon was spent on a tour of Sa Dec. Here we enjoyed a tea ceremony, visited a local temple and wandered through the food market. It’s fascinating to see people buying and selling at the market and there were certainly some interesting stalls, from live fish and frogs to skinned rats and fried insects. Thankfully, tonight’s dinner wouldn’t be bought here! Day 6 – Tan Chau & Crossing into Cambodia Tan Chau was a highlight of the trip, beginning with a boat journey past stilt houses and through the narrow channel to Evergreen Island. Here we were welcomed into a family’s home and learned of their life and traditions, afterwards crossing the town by rickshaw. Back on board and Ama Lotus departed for the

border between Vietnam and Cambodia where we stopped for visa checks. Having a whole afternoon on board gave us the chance to enjoy the ship; some chose to relax in their staterooms, others took a dip in the pool on deck. There was also a cooking demonstration. Evenings on a river boat are relaxed, so do not expect big productions. Most guests can enjoy a drink while listening to the piano. That being said, on a couple of occasions a documentary was shown,

Day 7 – Phnom Penh It’s an emotional introduction to Cambodia as we start the day with a visit to the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng (the S21 detention centre) to learn more about Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge regime. In the afternoon we were back into our groups and off to visit the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda – named after its silver floor – here a dress code is applied and all guests must cover shoulders and knees. As we were docked in Phnom Penh overnight, we chose to dine off the ship and experience the nightlife of the capital. For just a few US dollars you can reach the centre.

Day 8 – Phnom Penh & Koh Chen In the morning we visited Phnom Penh’s Central Market, the perfect place to find some bargains and even try some local food. Back on board we set sail for Koh Chen just 39km down the Mekong. Disembarking in Koh Chen is not for the immobile – and we had to walk across a narrow gangplank, followed by a short steep hill. Koh Chen is a small village where we saw a copper manufacturer and met some local children. Day 9 – Oudong Oudong was an interesting morning, a short coach journey took us to a Buddhist monastery where we took part in a blessing and explored the building. In the afternoon we went

to Kampong Tralach where we got on ox-carts to go back to the ship. Not the most comfortable mode of transportation! Day 10 – Kampong Chhnang Departing the ship by boat, we were taken through the floating village of Kampong Chhnang to see the people living on floating houses. It’s fascinating. After 40 minutes we went ashore to the town and were introduced to a local delicacy - fertilised duck egg. Days before a duckling is hatches, they boil and eat it. Yum! Day 11 – Disembark Ama Lotus & Siem Reap Depending on the water levels of the Tonle Sap Lake you will either disembark in Preak K’Dam or Siem Reap. Unfortunately they were too low for our cruise to sail across the lake.

46

What does this mean? Disembarking in Preak K’Dam and getting a coach to Siem Reap. In total this takes six hours. En route we did have the chance to taste a fried tarantula though so every cloud... The Sofitel is gorgeous, the service, food, rooms and pool are lovely. Plus, the hotel is in a good location. After lunch we departed for Angkor Thom, to see the Bayon temple – the most enduring capital of the Khmer empire. Dinner in Siem Reap was Freedom of Choice meaning you choose from a list of restaurants and APT books and arranges for a TukTuk to take you there. Dinner is paid for, but drinks are extra. Day 12 – Angkor Sunrise & Ta Prohm Temple Today is another highlight of the trip . . .a champagne sunrise at Angkor Wat - the 4:30am start was

definitely worth it! Not only did we enjoy the view as the sun rose over the magnificent Angkor Wat but this was followed by a tour of the temple – which works well because it was a cooler time of day and you’ll be back to the hotel in time for breakfast. Day 13 –Siem Reap Bicycle Tour & Departure As our departure wasn’t until the afternoon, we had time for a morning tour. I opted for cycling – it was lovely to go through Siem Reap’s countryside, and see locals going about their daily lives. Goodbyes are never easy and I certainly wasn’t ready to leave Cambodia. *APT have now added an extra day in Siem Reap, giving you more time to soak up the life and culture of Cambodia.
