PE KS4 PE Programme of Study

Programme of Study (POS) 2024-25

POS Overview - The POS is broken down into a rotation between activities which all build on the key learning and foundations created in KS3 PE. In KS4 there is still a focus on the golden strands, creating opportunities for students to develop each skill further alongside gaining a deeper understanding of the various tactics and strategies for specific activities. However, there is a bigger emphasis on engagement, participation and enjoyment in PE which in turn will encourage lifelong involvement in physical activity outside of school.

Like in Year 8 & 9, boy PE groups are differentiated by ability and movement skills, and girls are put together to make a larger girls PE set. To ensure the curriculum is inclusive and to break gender stereotypes all students take part in the same activity, for example all students do futsal, touch rugby and netball in core PE lessons.

In Year 11, to maximise student engagement the POS is designed/based on two weeks of activities followed by an option week. Students have the option to choose which activity they would like to do for a lesson which encourages independence and positive choices alongside meeting the needs of individuals. In Year 11 students naturally have a busier workload and we have designed Year 11 POS for students to engage with physical activity and enjoy taking part in lessons.

KS4 Games Programme of Study

POS Overview - Like KS3, the games programme is an extension of the PE curriculum Games share the same intent and focus on Golden Strands but with a wider focus on participation and engagement with competitive sport. Our main sports such as rugby, netball, football, cricket and rounders are delivered through the games programme to allow for a more structured programme to meet the needs and abilities of all students. Likewise other activities which feature in the PE Curriculum and POS are revisited in games to allow students more opportunities and time to develop each Golden Strand.

The games programme progresses into our extra-curricular programme which creates extensive opportunities for students to play competitive sport. Through competitive sport and games students are able to develop wider skills and experiences such as teamwork, resilience, confidence and competitiveness alongside the specific skill development and physical movement skills required for each activity.

Squad Groups are for students who will go on and play competitive sport for the school. The focus in games lessons is dependent on the squads development and specific areas of weakness to continue to improve as a team.

Development Groups are part of the engagement programme and rotation of activities Although the focus is on the same skills and golden strands as the squad group, it is not competitive and sport is played more recreationally to increase engagement and participation.
