Tattoos in the past have been put in a bad light and not wanted when hiring new employees for jobs. In recent years, tattoos have mostly not been a problem when getting hired at jobs. Some people still dont think tattoos should be allowed for some forms of work, or because of who they interact with. ¨Do I want a pilot with wild neck tattoos? A president with inked hands? It makes you think. I’d say it depends on the job and on the tattoo. Tattoos can be as elegant an accessory

as a watch or a ring… Generally speaking, I am a big believer that you pick the best person for the job.¨ Teacher Colby Cuppernull said. Tattoos have an incredible range of different meanings and forms and are great ways to express yourself stylistically, and personally. ¨There is absolutely a stylistic element to them. You don’t just get anything. You’re choosing an image that you think is cool. Even if you’re getting a tattoo

for very meaningful reasons, you’re still designing it and placing it based on how it looks and whether or not you like that’ ‘My tattoos are partly reminders of things that are important to me and partly things that I find visually striking¨ Teacher Colby Cuppernull said.

STYLING YOUR PERSONALITY Dying hair is a great way to express yourself, but when talking about dyed hair questions about professionalism come into play. In recent years the rise of dyed hair has entered the workspace. Some workplaces still consider these modifications unprofessional. Dyed hair is a more recent trend among people, so the outlook on it varies from it not mattering, to being a distraction. But dyed hair, like tattoos, are a way to express yourself and have fun. ¨I like dying my hair because it’s a

form of self-expression… But I did it because I like it. It’s the same reason one might wear makeup or a certain shirt. It’s fun, and I like the way it looks.¨ Courtesy of Bella Silva, a junior.

Shoes

Lakeview’s Athletic Director Kyle Kracht has been into shoes for 17 years; ever since he got his job. He owns over 150 pairs of athletic shoes. He takes his shoes very seriously and chooses what shoes to wear specifically designated to the season or situation. “If there is an event such as cancer night or something like that, I try my

best to wear shoes that will represent the event” athletic director Kyle Kracht said. To buy shoes, the main places he shops are Adidas, Nike, Eastbay, Finish Line, Dicks and Amazon. Kyle looks for certain things when deciding what shoes to buy. First, it depends what fad he is going through. A fad he is in right now is waterproof shoes. He also tries to look for

They’re cute, simple, and easy to carry around. It’s better than just carrying all of my things in my hands or pockets. I think it even adds to the outfit depending on what you’re going for. I also tend to use shoelaces as a belt for my jeans. It’s helpful and can have almost, if not, the same amount of support. It’s trendy and a quick way to tie everything together, literally.”

Return of the Winter Wonderland It is important to not only drive safely but dress appropriately While accidents occur all year round most drivers, especially young teenage drivers are affected in a more negative way than anyone else. This only gets worse when the first snow flies. Drivers are not yet acclimated to this environment and it certainly starts to show, especially when statistics start to come to the surface. shorts and snow just don't go Particular individuals choose to wear shorts during the winter months While winter driving tips are an important part of winter safety, dressing appropriately is equally as important. When the weather starts to become icy and cold, you should always want to be nice and toasty. However, a couple of individuals from our school think otherwise. Coming fresh into high school, not everyone necessarily cares about the way they dress, for freshman Logan Halstedt that is definitely the case. “I enjoy being comfortable,” Halstedt said. For a lot of people we dress in clothing items that we are comfortable in, and for this particular individual, he finds comfort in shorts, even when it is rather cold outside. But, just because it is cold outside, doesn’t mean it will be inside at school, which is where we are most of the day. “I pick these mostly for school because of all the sitting we do, it’s better to sit comfortably than not,” Halstedt said. It is pretty certain that Halstedt cares more about comfort than anything,

FEBRUARY 2022

however, he isn’t technically the only person that thinks that. Roaming among our teaching staff is somebody that thinks something quite similar. Dressing for the environment he is going to be in is something that teacher Nicholas Eckstein thinks about when picking out his outfits. “I am indoors while teaching for 8 hours. I am only outside for the time it takes me to get to my car and then get inside. It makes more sense to dress for the majority of the time. However, if I’m going to be outside, I will dress for that environment,” Eckstein said. Dressing for the comfort of the environment you are going to be in most of the day, definitely seems more important to these individuals than dressing for the cold that the winter season brings. While there may be a time when these individuals have to wear pants. you will almost always see them in shorts. KATE NOSIS, CO-EDITOR

A: During the indoor track season I am running as a sprinter, which means that I don’t run long distances and I can put all my energies in a shorter section. We practice Monday to Thurdsay. Monday and Wednesday’s practices include weight training lifting. Sprinters’ workouts usually last one hour. A: When I run I usually try not to think too much. I see running as a time when I only have to focus on pushing myself as much as I can. A: When I am running I think about the fact that my body is strong and able of doing amazing things. A: The reason I decided to join indoor track is mainly to get in shape for the outdoor track season in the spring. It is also a way to keep myself busy and physically active. Running track gave me the opportunty to make new friends and have fun while doing something good for my body.

Maura Piras, senior

Becky Pryor, coach

A: I have been coaching indoor track for about 20 years. We use indoor track to get ready for outdoor, so cross country and outdoor track. It also gives us a place to get the speed training in during the winter months. A: Mostly we just have a female team, some of the guys do run for some clubs team. We hope to get a few people to qualify for the indoor state meet, which will be the last weekend in February.

A: My favorite part about indoor track is the relationships that develop during practices. I have learned a lot about people by practicing in a sport that doesn’t compete for school and I have made friends that had the same interests as me by practicing. A: If I think about who made me join this sport I would have to say Coach Pryor, Jaqueline Quintano, Taylor Wilsey and Ellen Zentera. I would listen to them talking about it during Cross Country my freshman year, and how it is an amazing experience and it gets you ready for the spring season. So I joined and now I love it. A: Indoor track has taught me a lot about self motivation. I have learned that not everything is going to happen right way and that I may not always do things the correct way, but I need to keep myself focused and determined to make improvements. A: Training has helped me stay motivated when it comes to working on doing better in school, taking care of things in my personal life and to work towards the things I want. A: When I am running I think about this phrase: “The body is only as strong as the mind.” I think about this whenever I start to feel tired and I use it to push myself.”

Ski Club is not a place to compete, other than with yourself. It is a fun place to ski or snowboard with friends. On Thursdays Ski Club travels to Bittersweet to hit the slopes.

Heather Sawyer, supervisor

A: We coordinate with Lakeview Middle School and go on Thursdays. The students meet the teacher supervisors out there and we have an evening of fun. A: I love it when we get to go into the woods and make our own paths, rather than just going on the paths that were created for us. A: The ski club has been running for over 25 years and we really enjoy our time on the

slopes. Mrs. [Kathy] McGlynn helps with the high school group. Ms.[Kara} Barone and Mrs. [Jaqui] Ratliff coordinate the middle school. A: We also have a few other chaperones that rotate each week. We usually take a trip to Shanty Creek/Schuss Mountain at the end of February/early March, but COVID 19 has put that event on hold. We’re hoping that next year we can get back to our regular routine.” LAL SANGI, REPORTER

We have researched the most effective workout challenges to stick with that will not only fulfill your resolutions but also be doable regardless of skill level or athletic ability. 3 challenges to keep you in shape

CHALLENGE 2

This upper body workout is designed to make all your dreams come true. You’ll want to start by putting your arms out to the sides Next, you’ll want to move your arms in little circles Continue until it burns really badly and then keep going You can move your arms to above your head or out in front of you or switch circle direction anytime you want (overhead claps in between make for an extra hard challenge)

CORE

Of course, no one can forget about working out that core. Lie faceup on a bench or the floor. Reach your arms behind your head. Grab a bench, column, or pole to help you brace yourself. Activate your entire torso as you lift your hips and shift your weight to your shoulders. Drive your legs up, similar to the movement you’d use to do a reverse crunch, until they’re almost vertical. Keep your core tight and body

straight, and try not to bend at your hips. Slowly lower your legs to create a straight line from shoulders to hips and toes. Balance your body weight on your shoulders as you hold the position. Release. Repeat.

Any time an exercise starts to feel too easy, add weights for additional resistance and an extra challenge for your workout.

The RTR room is in place for dicipline and will be used.

Today, we live in a society where breaking the rules is something that is considered cool by peers. It supplies an adrenaline rush and you are viewed as top dog. Wheher it’s vaping in the bathroom stalls, sneaking on your phone in the back of class during a lecture, or even skipping class to hangout with friends all day. But the question is, what’s the point? Why do students feel the need to break rules when they are set in place to ensure the best safety for students possible. When time comes to enforce dicipline for the student who is in trouble, it takes time out of not only the teachers day, but the students day, too.

Drugs should never be brought on school property. Phones should be left in students’ lockers.

The tSo Popular No

Opinion...

Lakeview High School has undergone many changes since the building was first built back in 2006. Obviously, as the years pass by, and as technology gets more and more important to our society with advncements, students have started to abuse the power they once had to be able to openly have their phones during the school day. The school’s phone policy has been changed numerous times. The policy that is set in place now is, ‘Students may not be in possession of, or use, cell phones or cell phone-sized electronic devices (including MP3 players) during class time, including when in the hall on a pass during class time. During class time these devices are to be kept in the student’s locker. Students may use their cell phones or electronic devices in the hallways during passing time 9 or in the lunchroom during their lunch time’ according to the school handbook. The Reflective Thinking Room, also known as RTR, was added to the building’s mix in hopes to get students to learn from their mistakes when caught on their devices when they are not supposed to be. If they are, they will receive punishments such as losing their phone for the rest of day, after-school or in-lunch detention, or even call home to the student’s parents. Students are allowed to openly be on their phones during passing

time between class periods, at lunchtime, before the school bell rings in the mornings, and after the school bell rings at the end of the day. Places students are not allowed on their phones is during class time, in the classroom room, or even when they get a pass to be out in the hallways for whatever reason. At the end of the day after getting your phone taken for being caught on it, students can go pick it up from the RTR room once school is over. ‘While cell phones certainly offer students increased communication abilities, providing students with a tool for added safety and parent contact, many public school leaders assert that cell phones are a severe distraction in the educational process. Whether students are talking in the halls, on the phone in the restroom facilities, or texting during class, phones are proving to be a significant distraction for many students’ According to the Public school review. Strengthening the school phone policy has been seen as beneficial for students by teachers in many ways. ‘Research says that students who are in class and focused on class always do better than those who are absent or distracted (phones or otherwise). Students are not able to maximize their learning opportunities if they’re not fully present to the instruction being presented.’ Mrs. Haley said. KEZIA WRIGHT, REPORTER

Weed use not LEGAL at SCHOOL

Weed stores have had a big boom around Battle Creek and the surrounding areas. Many adults can now go and buy their own weed for themselves, but what if a student gets their hands on it and brings it to school? ¨It is not acceptable for students or staff to be in possession of marijuana or products that contain THC (edibles, vape pens, etc.)...Students also face discipline but there are different tiers of consequences for them. Students will face suspension from school in any circumstance that involves marijuana related products on

school grounds,¨ Principal Copy Japinga said. ¨The other challenge that we have is the smell of marijuana on clothing or other items students bring to school. While we believe that it does give us reasonable suspicion to search a student and their belongings, we also want to be aware that marijuana may be used in the home,¨ Japinga said. The problem of students using weed also brings up the question of mental health, and why the student feels they need to use a mind-altering drug such as weed.

¨I am frustrated when students make the choice to bring to or use marijuana related products on school grounds. It also makes me concerned for the mental health of students as well… That is why we also try to tie in mental health support when we are dealing with issues related to marijuana at school,¨ Japinga said. We hope that educating the students of Lakeview on the consequences that will be faced if a student has any or has used any weed, helps to eliminate the usage of it and improves our school space we share as Spartans.
