Inflation on the Rise

banking on the go

save time and money!

Inflation is increasing to some of the highests levels seen in decades due to the Coronavirus, labor issues and the world environment.

A

ELISE SEGAL, REPORTER

t the start of the pandemic, a majority of businesses around the world shut down, leading to a pause in production. While production was shut down, everyone stuck at home needed things to do, increasing the demand for many products. The increase in demand soon depleted the existing inventory that remained. Now, even with the production being back online, it is still behind schedule, which has led to supply shortages across all markets.

THE CRYSTAL NEWS

One of the more notable shortages is the car shortage across the country, as cars sit in lots waiting for one computer chip. Since computer chip producers shut down during the early stages of the pandemic, they have not been able to catch up to meet the demand, resulting in the sparse stock of new cars and other electronic devices. In addition to the delayed production, a labor shortage has also plagued the economy. Some have referred to the event as the “Great Resignation” as thousands of workers are resigning because they prefer to work from home and would like to stay working in that format. During the pandemic, people came to the realization that they would rather stay home than work or find better jobs that would accommodate their preferences. Many of these people were in jobs that do not receive the best benefits, such as restaurant workers and delivery drivers.

The labor shortage has further increased the impact of the shortage of inventory. There are not enough workers to help distribute and transport the goods that have been produced. There has been a particular choke point at the Los Angeles ports as many goods people have purchased are sitting there waiting to be delivered. This is happening all over the country including with food as there are not workers to distribute and unload shipments. The shortages across the economy have led to the inflation of prices in all markets. One particular market that has been hit badly is the food market, as families can buy less and less food for the same amount of money that they used to a year ago. This is hurting everyone across the country, including those in Battle Creek, as food is a necessity and people can’t stop buying it. Now with the current inflation rate at 7.9

APRIL 2022

percent, businesses are trying to stop the inflation by putting an end to the shortages through raising wages in order to provide incentives to increase the labor force and, therefore, increasing production to pre-pandemic levels. Another market that has been dealing with inflation is the gas market. During the pandemic, oil production was slowed and they have been struggling to get the pro-

APRIL 2022

duction back up to their pre-pandemic output numbers. This struggle is the result of push back from environmentalists to permanently slow oil production as well as the time it takes to build up oil production. The crisis with Russia and Ukraine has led to massive economic sanctions including oil as Russia is a major oil producer. While the US barely gets any of their oil from Russia, a lot of Russian oil goes to Europe and Chi-

na, decreasing the world supply of gas and raising prices worldwide. As the US is working on deals with Saudi Arabia and putting an end to the Russia - Ukraine conflict, their efforts will be reduced in the beginning due to economic time lags. Many economists predict that the gas prices will not begin to decrease until late summer after reaching possible record average highs of $5 per gallon.

Myth

Fact

The President is in charge of the economy and is responsible for its fluctuations.

The US economy can be affected by fiscal policy which is controlled by Congress and monetary policy which is controlled by the Federal Reserve that has no political affiliations. The other major factor in the economy is the consumers and their choices.

The money supply is responsible for inflation.

Several factors contribute to price levels including the money supply, expected future price levels, consumer demand, inputs used to make other goods and fiscal and monetary policy.

Inflation has negative consequences for everyone.

Inflation negatively affects people who lend money such as banks, but helps people who borrow money during inflation.

Inflation will ruin the economy.

Small inflation is healthy for an economy and the inflation rate is targeted by the federal reserve to stay around 2%, when the inflation rate increases beyond this, the economy might suffer if it falls into hyperinflation. THE CRYSTAL NEWS

SCHOOL SECURITY

3 words: Look, listen and smell, and THEN act.

The importance of students’ safety while being at school can not be emphasized enough. To achieve maximum safety, it’s important for everybody in the building to follow school procedures. Social and physical safety reflects attention to, providing support to students and staff, and helps obtain high behavioral and academic standards as well as encouraging and maintaining respectful, trusting, and caring relationships throughout the school.

TYPES OF SAFETY PROCEDURES

Q&A

Principal Japinga & Officer Herbstreith What is your best advice when you are in a security emergency?

Listen to what was actually said through the speakers. So yo u have an idea about how worried you should be. Listen to your teachers. They’re prepared and educated for these kind of situations and there to help you. LISTEN TO ANOUCEMENTS. LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN. What can students do individually to improve school safety?

The number one thing is to never open a door, during a school day, that is not a main entrance. Students going out of other entrances than the main one, puts safety in danger. There is a reason the person might not want to use the main entrance. What is one thing you wish students knew?

Don’t spread rumors and/or listen to rumors on social media. I will let you know, what is important for you to know. Just because you are pulled out or class/called to the office, does not mean you are in trouble. - Principal Japinga

A

ccutane is a brand name for Isotretinoin. Isotretinoin is a Vitamin A derivative that works by shrinking the oil glands in the skin to reduce the production of oil clogging the pores and eliminate the production of acne. Due to the shrinkage of the sabaceous (oil) glands, Acctuane causes the individuals taking it to have very dry skin. People who have not had

success with other acne medications may be advised by a dermatologist to take Accutane. For some, Accutane is a life saver and clears their acne tremendously; however, there also are many side effects that come with taking the medication. These side effects may include dry skin, rashes, itching, back and joint pain, nosebleeds, etc.

Before Accutane

After Accutane

Junior Dom Wirtz started his journey with Accutane freshman year and 100% reccommends the medication. “It worked really well for me,” Wirtz said. “I started Accutane mostly because of textured skin but it did help a lot with the acne I did have. Whenever I’m cutting [weight] is when my skin looks

best since I’m eating much cleaner, healthier foods. I also make sure to use a good moisturizer to avoid the dryness. I did notice while taking Accutane I didn’t get very tan during the summer; however, that went away once I was done taking Accutane.” For Dom, taking Accutane was an overall successful experience.

The journey with Accutane was differfent for junior Bradleigh Palmer. She did not enjoy the medication. “Accutane never really worked for me because of the side effects of taking the medication as a female,” Palmer said. “There are a lot of rules and side effects that only pertain to women on the medication and it didn’t

work for me. I was on it for a few months until the side effects became too much. Before Accutane my dermatologist and I tried all kinds of intense face washes, but after Accutane I started using Cetaphil. For me, basic face wash and moisturizer works best and my skin has never looked better.”

If you are a female interested in Accutane make sure to consult with your doctor/pediatrician to see if it is right for you. Accutane can have negative affects on future reproduction.

The most common skin condition, ACNE AFFECTS between 40 million and 50 million individuals annually. Adolescents and young adults between ages 12 and 24 tend to be the most affected group.

What are some specific ingredients to look out for and what do they do? Some specific ingredients to look for that are dermatologist recommended are Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C, Retinol, and Ceramides. • Glycolic acid exfoliates the skin, boosts collagen production, and speeds up cell turnover. This helps to cleear pores, smooth fine wrinkles, fade dark patches, improve skin tone balance, and mositurize to replenish the skin. • Vitamin C also produces collagen production, which thickens the dermis, smooths fine lines, and, due to the fact that it is an antioxident, it protects the

skin cells from damaging when exposed to UV rays. • Retinol stimulates the production of new blood vessels in the skin, softens rough patches, and increases the production of collagen. • Your skin naturally produces Ceramides, however you can also look for this in skin care products. Ceramides protect the skin and prevent it from dryness and infections. This is something that is key to look for when purchasing moisturizers as ceramide moisturizers can help replensih your skins natural Ceramides.

What’s the hype with CeraVe? CeraVe is the number one dermatologist recommended skin care brand and is also recommended by many influencers such as Emma Chamberlain, Hyram Yarbo, and many more. CeraVe’s active ingredient is Pramoxine Hydrochloride, which is used to protect the skin from irritation and inflammation, which helps to clear acne. When it comes to clearing acne and bettering your skin, people and dermatologists are discovering that products

with less chemicals and active ingredients work the best. “CeraVe has been my go-to since... forever,” influencer and Youtuber Emma Chamberlain said. ”It’s the most reliable stuff out there for me.” CeraVe’s foaming cleanser is also the top recommended face wash for those using Accutane who have more oily skin. “It helps remove excess oil,” Dermatologist Marisa Garshick said. Robots Robotics Club is a fun, engaging group of intelligent people from ninth grade to twelfth grade, all who can express their creativity and love for technology. Even if you don’t consider yourself the most creative or smart person, you can still participate in Robotics and enjoy it. During the fall there is no building. But there is mentoring for elementary and middle schools teams, so a younger sibling takes an interest in robotics as well, get in contact with that school and get some more information on meeting for mentoring. The beginning of the school year is full of meetings where the team plans their robot. The teams don’t know how the competition will play out until January. After this, begins the building season. Teams analyze the components of the field, determine what they want to achieve on the field to be most successful and have fun while doing it. After each team has decided on how to make their robots and have started building them, they will use prototypes to test their creations, and after doing so they will present their final product to judges. After the club has their building season, they participate in exciting competitions with other

robotics groups from other schools. The games played every year change, making a new challenge every season. “The game changes every year, which makes this a unique sport and constantly invigorating,” First Robotics Club Adviser John Burdette said. “The common theme, however, is that we play in randomly assigned alliances of three robots each. For twelve rounds of play, we teamed up with other schools who worked on their own unique robotic solutions to the year’s game. Our opponents for one match may be our partner’s for the next…but we go beyond just building robots. We host events and inspire others in our community.” There are some requirements to join and participate in Robotics Club. “Team members do have to participate in pre-season training to be a part of the team and compete so this is not a club where members can come and go. Team members are first chosen in late September and our final roster is made in January,” Burdette said. Although this year’s opening for the Robotics Club has ended, there will still be opportunities to join next year. Even if you are not interested

in joining, please visit their club at their competitions to cheer them on. “During the build season of January through February, we meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and then again on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Outside of this the days and times vary…For those interested, we are host to the FIRST Robotics Competition Lakeview District Event at Lakeview High School in the main and aux gyms on April 1 and 2, 2022. Come check it out!” Burdette said. Be sure to set your calendars for next year’s building season, tryouts and this year’s competition to be sure you get into next year’s group and you can watch this year’s successes. Overall, robotics is a fun, inclusive and hard working club made for creative individuals who love technology and challenges. “We work a lot as a team T/W/Th 5:30-9 Sat 8-4,” junior robotics team member Elise Segal said. “So, we get to know each other really well, which helps when we need to work together during competition. The competitions are just really fun to go to, too,” MAKAYLA POOLE, REPORTER

Celebrating the world within the Lakeview community Lakeview is full of different and amazing cultures, and to learn a little more about them, we will celebrate Multicultural Week for the first time since 2019 from April 25 to 29. “Multicultural week is a week where we can showcase and celebrate the many different cultures at Lakeview High School,” Multicultural Club member junior Camille Evanjalista said. “It is hosted by the Multicultural Club and any student can participate.” Most of the cultures at Lakeview will be represented and everyone can participate. “This week is to help the people learn about the

different cultures,” senior Van Nei Swe said. “You can participate even if you are ‘white’ by supporting any of the other different cultures.” “It is a celebration of the different cultures that we have at Lakeview,” junior Angel Duran said. “We all should know at least a little bit of every culture, especially about the ones that we live with every day.” The events of Multicultural Week are also intended to help everyone understand the differences in cultures that are not evident to everyone. “We tend to group all people in big groups, like white, Hispanic, Asian and Black,” Students 4 Equity

co-adviser Victoria Fox said. “There are a lot of people that are one race but they have mixed cultures, and we are all related. It’s important to dig into those cultures so everyone can understand them.” Recognizing the diversity of cultures within our community is just one important step. Off season, a lot of us played travel softball and we had practices every Monday, Wednesday and Sunday.”

“I’m excited for the tournaments and eventually getting the chance to qualify for states and all the fun practices. From the team I expect us to play as a team and I also expect us to maybe place first or second in the tournaments. Off season I went to practice four hours a day, practicing swing motion and stand putting. My personal goals for this season are basically to break 80 and qualify for states. I use my dad as my main inspiration because he was the pro at several different golf courses and always pushed me to do better.”

Most of us, during preseason, went to the gym, played another sport like volleyball, cheered on the girls’ basketball team and played travel soccer as well. I have some personal goes as well; go to KCC and play college soccer, and never give up, even if lose against hard teams. My mom is my biggest inspiration, because she played soccer and she was super sweet.”

Stine Soars to states

In a male dominated sport, Kennedy Stine paves the way for future female Lakeview wrestlers

Wrapping up the end of her wrestling season, sophomore Kennedy Stine made her way to the podium. After a hard two days at Ford Field fighting for a spot to medal, she came out with a seventh place finish and an All-State Honor. Practicing five days a week, with an occasional lift and morning practice definitely made a difference in her performance, but having a good coach behind her definitely took her to the next level. To the coaching staff, Stine is seen as just another wrestler and not a “girl that wrestles,” which is a mentality that helped them take her all the way. “When I felt like giving up [Coach Matthew MacQuillian] would push me or tell me he knew I had more left in me,” Stine said. “When I didn’t feel confident going into matches he would tell me

Bang-up Season: New head wrestling coach Matt MacQuillan and assistant Dan White congratulate Brad Collins on his 100th career win.

THE CRYSTAL SPORTS

A

I began my wrestling coaching career in Mattawan. I was the assistant head coach for 3 years while I attended WMU. After finishing college I started working at Dowagiac where I continued to coach wrestling. I was the assistant varsity coach and worked with Jr. High for 7 years and then became the head coach for the remaining 6 years. I took a break from coaching for 7 years while I helped raise my 3 boys until this year when I became the head coach here. As a team, winning the all city tournament was the highlight of the season for me. Individually we had several highlights. Bradly Collins earned 100 career wins, Gavin White was a regional champion and state qualifier and Kennedy Stine was the first female Battle Creek native to qualify for state and become the first female to earn all state honors by placing 7th at the state meet. What I like about coaching is

just to leave it on the mat; He even would take me to Portage to have me wrestle against girls, so I could get used to it.” Coming to a new school and filling the head coach position wasn’t the easiest thing for MacQuillian, but he and Stine definitely made it work. “I was extremely proud and excited for Kennedy,” MacQuillian said. “She wrestled quite well and deserved to be All-State that day. She will forever be known as the first girl not only to qualify for States in the Battle Creek area, but also the first to be All-State. She has two more years to try to earn a KATE NOSIS, CO-EDITOR higher spot on the podium.” building relationships with the student athletes. Because of the amount of time, hard work and dedication it takes to be a wrestler I am able to develop relationships that reach well beyond the classroom. I am still in contact with many of my wrestlers from the past. My wrestling experience was great. I started wrestling in 3rd grade. I always enjoyed the fact that it was a team sport, but you could also be successful as an individual. I was lucky enough to enjoy both in high school. Our wrestling team won the conference and district championships all 4 years. I was a state qualifier as a senior. I looked up to my coach Sam Wilson. He was a great leader and motivator; he was a major reason I wanted to become a wrestling coach. I feel that wrestling is the greatest sport to prepare you for life’s journey. Because of the amount of dedication and work, both mentally and physically, it takes to be a good wrestler you have no choice but to

develop a good work ethic. Because of the sport’s individuality you have to learn how to deal with adversity and turn it into a positive. When you step on the mat it’s just you vs. your opponent. Whatever happens in that 6 minutes is totally on your shoulders. It takes a lot of character to handle a loss and know it falls on you. Armed with a great work ethic and high character coming out of high school a wrestler can accomplish anything they put their mind to. The future of Lakeview wrestling will be dedicated to developing the best possible student athletes in the school. My goals as a coach are to send wrestlers away from my program with the traits I mentioned above, so they can be successful throughout life. Wrestlers will be pushed mentally and physically for them to reach their highest potential both on and off the mat. Because of these high standards I believe the sky’s the limit and we will be able to reach our goals both as individuals and as a team.

Return of unnecessarily strict open-lunch pass requirements upsets students Before the pandemic began, students were required to meet certain protocols and apply for an open-lunch pass. However, when we came back to school in January 2020, those protocols were eliminated in order to reduce the number of students eating lunch at the same time in the cafeteria. Starting August 2022, we will be returning to the original

requirements for open lunch passes. Since COVID-19 safety protocols have lessened, the number of students in the cafeteria is no longer a concern. This list is excessive and implementing these rules suddenly is unreasonable. Students have become accustomed to having open lunch privileges without worrrying about their attendance and the other requirements. LAL SANGI, REPORTER

In order to apply for an open lunch pass, student must meet the following requirements: • • • • • •

Passed all of their classes the previous school year. Carry a cumulative 2.0 GPA during their high school career. Have less than 15 full school days where absences were recorded during the previous year. Have less than 3 unexcused absences during the previous school year. Have a parent consent form signed. Students may be eligible to leave campus during lunch during the 10th, 11th and 12th grade years.

Students who fail to follow these expectations will have their colored cards revoked. *The administration reserves the right to revoke open lunch privileges at any time. Parents of students with lunch privilege may also revoke that privilege by contacting the school administration. • Students without lunch privileges are not allowed to leave the building during lunch. • Students earning the open lunch privilege will be provided with color coded student identification cards indicating their privilege to leave campus during their lunch period. The color code will change each year. • Criteria will be reviewed each summer, and students who lose open lunch privileges will not be awarded an updated colored card. • Students with lunch privilege who leave campus during lunch without their student identification will be subject to disciplinary consequences. • While off campus, students cannot be supervised by school personnel. Students are expected to respect the rights of others and obey civil and traffic laws while off property. • Students are expected to be positive role models and good neighbors as the pass through residential areas being considerate of private property.

Concerns

Some students were out of school during COVID last tri and counting more than 3 unexcused absences. I feel this policy is strict and very few those as an absences wouldn’t be fair for them since it wasn’t their fault students will meet these criteria. The number of unexcused absences for bring sick. should no longer be a factor.” “Some kids have reasons such Open lunch is the only time for “I have more than three unexcused absences,” junior as medical or other things that students to actually get outside and Evan Yarger said. “I think that if I have over a 4.0, show do whatever they want for a while, so keep them out of school for extended periods, even though up almost every day, play sports and am a team captain, it would be unfair to take that away they’re excused they still exceed then I should be able to go out to lunch. I think it’s unfrom students. Everyone needs at 15 days so I and maybe some least a bit of break time from learnfair because sometimes teachers accidentally mark you ing and everything that’s going on in others wouldn’t qualify because absent. I know that has happened to me. Also, someof this” says junior Brendon. their lives. If the absence rules are be“I would say that we should be times, parents forget to call in. I think that if I am doing cause of how much students able to go out to lunch as long as everything right I should be able to go out to lunch.” missed their classes after lunch you are not late to your next class,” then it should be 3 or 4 absences says junior Katie. “If you have more for that class to be able to quallify for open lunch. than three absences for your class after lunch then, yes, you probably “Most students don’t meet these criteria,” says sophomore Amina. shouldn’t go out to lunch. But life happens and not be able to have more “I have never missed a full day of school and I perform well, but I have than three absences for the whole year is unreasonable.”
