COVER PHOTO Despite transitioning to virtual school in March 2020, this fall trimester’s virtual schedule was one that took some getting used to. Zooms were the daily norm and Schoology permeated the world of teaching and learning. It was important to stay organized while learning from home (pg. 12) and to stay safe both mentally (pg. 13) and physically (pg. 16). Editorial Policy: The Crystal is a self-funded student publication distributed free of charge to all Lakeview High School students and staff with a total press run of 500. The publication is an open forum for expression and a two-way communication for both the school and community. The editor-inchief and staff are solely responsible for the content. Opinions expressed in the newspaper are not necessarily those of the staff or the administration of the Lakeview High School.
I did not imagine starting my senior year amid a global pandemic, as I am sure everyone else did not imagine starting their school year amid one either. We are currently living in unprecedented times, and I have found it is sometimes hard to appreciate what we have, when everything seems to be, for lack of better words, falling apart. Right before school started, I found myself struggling to accept the fact that my senior year was not going to look like everyone else’s. I was frustrated that we would be going online, even though I knew it was the safest option and I was upset that my class, our class, was not going to have any of the fun parts of the fall season. However, over the past few weeks I have come to appreciate the things we do get to experience this fall. Cross country, for me, has provided a sense of normalcy in otherwise completely abnormal times. I am grateful that we were given the opportunity to have our season even if it meant no camp, no sleepovers, running in masks (only for two days), and fewer meets. There is a certain community that exists on a team. As a student athlete, I find it very fortunate that I was able to be on a team this fall. The cross country team, both boys and girls, have created an atmosphere that takes your mind off of reality for a moment; everything seems “normal.” I have found myself appreciating the sport and the team more than usual this year. We are a fraction of the student body that gets to enjoy some sense of normalcy during this time. The point I am trying to make is that we need to appreciate every single “win” (speaking metaphorically) we get during this strange time. Whether it is having a sports season, being able to see friends again, or even the zoom calls where we are able to see our teachers. We need to be grateful for what we have, even if it seems like it is the smallest thing.
