Looking to the Future The problem with traditional yearbooks is that they are precisely that – A look back at events that have already happened. Great if you’re a nostalgia nut, not so great if you’re trying to plan for what lies ahead. As anyone that has ever seen my mode of dress will attest, I am not one to be bound by convention. So when we sat down to plan this Directory, we wanted to eschew tradition and do something new; something untried; something different. And so we gathered together some of the finest minds working within the demolition industry and set them a simple task – To look ahead in their chosen field. Over the following pages, you will read about a variety of subjects from the use of drones to end of life directives for buildings; insuring against fees for intervention and how vibration monitoring will change in years to come. Of course, demolition is an organic entity, constantly changing at a pace and in a direction that no-one can predict. But we firmly believe that the editorial content within the following pages will provide you with some serious food for thought.
Although this publication is called a directory, the actual directory part is tucked away towards the back of the publication. That directory comes in two parts – A straight A-Z of the UK’s demolition contractors; and a “by county” directory that will allow potential customers to locate and contact the demolition company closest to them. Once again, we have dispensed with the tradition of only including those companies that belong to a specific “club”. Our directory – compiled by a third-party data specialist – includes ALL the companies listed as demolition contractors. We would like to think that this will be an invaluable resource for all the architects, developers, construction companies and emergency service providers to whom this publication has been sent. Oh, and before you start reading what we hope will be an entertaining and insightful publication, we would just like to say a big thank you to all the advertisers and sponsors, without whom this directory would not have been possible. Design for Deconstruction
Building Today Demolition of T Future generations of demolition men and women will face the challenge of recycling materials that are impossible or prohibitively expensive to salvage. Dr Terry Quarmby, a vocal advocate of Design for Deconstruction, addresses the issue. The construction resource and waste platform (bre) states that around 380 million tonnes of resources are consumed by the construction industry each year. Thiswould suggest that there is a much greater scope for waste reduction, reuse and recycling than may be the popular perception. The overall aim, therefore, should be for resources to be used efficiently and recycled effectively. We also need to cut carbon to provide financial benefits as well as environmental.
Although we have stated that recycling needs to be effective it should also be secondary to reuse as this process is key to eliminating waste at source and closing the loop in whole life cycle assessment.
4
for the Tomorrow The Cost of Waste
Black Art
Whilst waste is an issue that represents a huge cost to industry, on its own it is one part of a bigger picture.
Surprisingly little was known about waste handling, minimisation, reuse and recycling activities carried out by the sector. Given that until quite recently the activities of a demolition contractor was likened to a ‘black art’ and the sooner they were off the site the better.
To create a truly sustainable construction process we need to reduce waste at source by designing construction products that will meet the expectations of today as well as those of tomorrow’s generation.
At least that was the thinking. But times have changed because building, structures and the products of this process have changed and demolition contractors have had to adapt or go under trying.
This might be an easy statement to make and is most probably an obvious one, yet it is proving to be difficult for designers and procurers of construction products to enable. The demolition industry has come under scrutiny on many occasions by UK NGO’s and UK Government departments mainly to try to understand how it works and what processes and principals drive demolition contractors and their methodology.
Today, if one takes the time and has the inclination, you will find that there is a vast degree of sustainable thinking and action by the demolition fraternity when it comes to minimising, handling and disposing of waste products and to the reuse and recycling of those products of construction that can be separated and processed along the way.
Unfortunately, those organisations or departments have on too few occasions sought the advice and knowledge of demolition practitioners to provide in depth guidance.
However, if we were absolutely honest, much of this good work is driven by fiscal concerns and not merely to reduce environmental impacts or aid in the sustainability agenda.
5
Design for Deconstruction At the current rate of use we could reasonably expect to deplete a large amount of the Earth’s natural resources within our life time. Everyone connected with looking at this issue will no doubt agree that it’s true but so far there is little evidence that we have found and or are likely to adopt a strategy that will address this issue.
suspect is that it is all of these things and more that make sustainable demolition that much more difficult to achieve. There are a growing number of demolition practitioners and environmentalists that have come to the conclusion that there are a number of ways designers can make a huge difference to improve sustainability all round. Clearly, the responsibility does not fall squarely on the designers shoulders to carry the mantle. They can produce construction product design that improves reuse capability, they can surely design new build products and systems that are fully recyclable and they can design with an eye on safety, the environment and ecology issues too.
We continue, as we speak, to develop one-off construction projects, using known or unknown hazardous materials or products we know are inherently difficult to recycle and impossible to reuse. We seem to consider the cost of building as critical to delivering a successful project but have little or no consideration for end of life costs. Specifiers want to use virgin materials as quality, standards and accountability can be achieved with the minimum of effort.
But it will take a concerted effort by many others to pick up these designs and to carry them through to manufacture and use in the built environment. This may be a difficult process and it may have a degree of additional cost attached but we have to look at the costs to the environment and to society as a whole if we don’t address the very real issues facing us.
Therefore secondary or pre-used materials are rarely considered as there appears to be lack of such evidence at any stage along the supply chain. Is this because perceptions influence mindset which ultimately drives habit?
Jumping Through Hoops Facing the Future Today
A demolition contractor will probably argue that they cannot do any more than they do at present to help sustainability thinking. This may be as a result of increasingly high fuel costs, dwindling reuse markets and poor quality recyclate material coming from the demolition process. It could be that legislation and regulation make it difficult to handle and qualify a materials status without jumping through numerous fiscal and time consuming loops. It could even be that the amount of waste now being produced is gradually drowning any innovation and lateral thinking that has traditionally been associated with the industries operating principles. What I strongly
Without wishing to simplify the demolition process to the extent that it may appear anyone can operate within its sphere it is nevertheless a simple concept to grasp that requires a good deal of common sense, experience borne of physical knowledge and an aptitude for problem solving with a never say die attitude. If these are traits that are recognisable in other occupations the similarity ends there. There can be no other trade contractor who is expected to work in any environment on any structure, handling every conceivable type of waste using his own bespoke plant, equipment and vehicles, whose training
6
regime is so diverse that his workforce are often multi-skilled and adapted for work below ground and at heights. They achieve all this rarely getting the plaudits that go to other specialised trades and are certainly not given credit for the huge investment that is required to equip them to carry out this highly specialised and intricate work. For the future and what does it hold? Well for one it will necessitate a joined up approach by all stakeholders to drive the sustainable agenda for construction and demolition alike. BIM will almost certainly have large role to play in all this as well as the development of DIM,
(deconstruction information modelling) to address the end of life issues and close the loop. If constructors can work with sustainable construction products that have a residual value at the end of their life, demolition contractors can ensure that those products can be recovered thereby minimising waste and the environmental impacts currently experienced. We still have a long road ahead, perhaps 40 to 50 years yet, until this utopia can be realised. The sooner we make the necessary moves the sooner that target becomes reality.

Where Demoliti Computer G Computer-generated graphics are an increasingly important weapon in the modern demolition contractor’s armoury. And with Building Information Modelling (BIM) playing an increasing role across the sector, the ability to visualise a project before and during demolition works will make this technology even more valuable. Marsotti Digital Construction project manager Mark France gazes into his computer-generated crystal ball.

Computer graphics, also known as CG or CGI, is big business around the globe. From major blockbuster movies and advertising through to video games or architectural visualization, CG is omnipresent. But what value can CG bring to the building, civil engineering, and demolition industries?
Visualisation is an excellent way to ‘paint a thousand words’ within bid documents, interview shows and pre-construction presentations. From logistics layouts to phasing diagrams, graphics will help win bids, convey intentions and improve planning.

The biggest single barrier to the establishment of a strong and sustainable project visualisation market is the simple fact that CG isn’t a pre-requisite for tenders. Other factors include no expectation from developers/constructors or the need to match competitors.
Sounds fantastic, but except for the odd ‘highprofile’ project with a big budget, visualisation in the building, civil engineering, and demolition industries remains something of a rarity. To outsiders this seems crazy as 3D illustration is an excellent way to show non-technical observers how one intends to deliver a project. Why is there negligible up-take?
By contrast architectural visualisation/CG, with its dedicated magazines and awards ceremonies to boot, has been well established since the late 1990’s. Around the world there’s a mix of in-house (architect), studios, and individuals outputting imagery to feed the industry’s need. Any architect who doesn’t include artist impressions in his competitions or at the design stage wouldn’t stay in business for long.
BIM to Increase Demand? I thought that recent government legislation concerning the requirement for implementation of BIM (Building Information Modelling) on publicfunded building projects stood a good chance of jump-starting visualisation within the industry. Thus far all it seems to have done is force construction and companies to create the role of BIM administrator and find a consultant who can write a policy document describing how they intend to implement and use BIM on projects.
When will the building, civil engineering, and demolition industries have to follow suit? Will it ever happen? What will cause it to happen?
The Staffing Challenge In-house staffing is another issue having a big impact. The role of a CAD technician working in building design or for a contractor is lowly, has few prospects, and is poorly remunerated by comparison with, say, engineers or managers.
There has not been a ‘natural progression’ from BIM to computer graphics because the skills and processes of each differ greatly. At least released BIM models can now be used directly within a visualisation allowing for a small reduction in cost and increase in turn-around.
9
BIM Another big problem is the short turn-around of demolition tenders of say two weeks compared to four weeks for building and six weeks for civils (figures are approximate).
Model Scene
Creating 3D requires a minimum time-frame for delivery especially when taking into account preparation, modelling, waiting for planning input and amendments at the end. For this reason alone you may argue that visualisation in demolition isn’t feasible for bids.
Models
Equipment
Prohibitively Expensive Talking conservatively and from my perspective, costs for a building visualisation stands at around £6,000 to £7,000 which on face-value is very high but there’s a lot of work involved at various levels of expertise. Demolition comes in at around half that cost in my experience. An architect once told me that he could expect to pay £10,000 or so for a full architectural visualization. Very expensive and yet another potential barrier.
BIM may have raised the profile a little in the short term but I’ m sure things will settle back down for the operators. The visualisation/CG process is involved and you need quality dedicated staff and a well tried set-up to stand any chance of success. The problem I see in the building, civil engineering, and demolition industries is that anyone starting in a CAD/ visualisation/CG department with decent qualifications, talent or ambition will most probably want to move on, leaving a skills vacuum that is painful to keep filling.
The knowledge described above comes from my experiences working with three of the top ten UK demolition contractors and a number of ‘secondtier’ demolition contractors. My demolition visualisation work has included deep excavations in London, nuclear decommissioning, civils, and a number of method statements. My digital building experience is extensive and civils visualisation portfolio growing.
At £100 billion annually, there’s no shortage of money in the construction industry available for CG if the need arises. The demolition market on the other hand is worth only a small fraction of this market and cash is tight, especially for the ‘luxury’ of visualisation at either bid or pre-project stages.
I have painted a pretty bleak picture of the demolition industry’s adoption of CG and now I want to present some practical solutions to what I consider to be a complex problem – that of producing 3D in-house.

Max is a very complex package which needs a massive commitment and an excellent set-up with bright staff. I don’t have any other knowledge of ‘free’ modelers such as Rhino.
Hopefully I’ll be able to give you some pointers based on my expertise although I’ve narrowed my field of view over the years so there may be elements, such as other types of software, of which I’ m not so well informed.
Working Sequence The Software Choice
Sequencing of works will always be a challenge especially when navigating the quirks of any software. Demolition CG is particularly tough as it usually involves internals modelling. You could choose to fully animate all actions as the film makers do but this is very complex. By taking this route you’ll need a license of Adobe After Effects which opens up a whole new world of video effects (VFX). If you want to keep things simple, try creating a series of scenes depicting key stages (ie: delete out the bits being demolished in each file).
Choosing the right software is paramount. Applications fall into two main categories; parametric and ‘free’ (my own term) modelers. Parametric basically means an intelligent object, one that has parameters. For example, one draws a line from A to B and on a pull-down selects a specific beam size – no modelling, just sticks. This is how BIM software such as Revit, ArchiCAD, and steel fabrication software works. Free modelling on the other hand is the creation of an object to how it looks which may very well be accurate but has to be ‘crafted’. Examples of software: 3D Studio Max and Sketch Up.
The still image output can be placed into Word and Powerpoint with annotation overlaid. 3D Studio Max can export to a review model which enables your client to walk around a scene in real-time.
Parametric modelers are excellent for design (building or product) but are constrained to their own disciplines, for example building services. They are not geared up for visualisation which may include the inclusion of equipment models such as cranes, digging holes, or sequencing of works.
You’ll need a comprehensive equipment library set ready-to-go as these models take time to build. Sure, you can purchase or download them free from the web but the models may be way too complex and not to scale. I think that model consistency is important and adds a level of professionalism.
From around 2005 Sketch Up has been very popular for creating quick and easy representations of an architectural project or a technical illustration. I consider it a great low to mid-range CG application which can be used for simple but clear demolition visualisation work. I think that Sketch Up would struggle when working with large BIM models and for more sophisticated CG projects. 3D Studio Max is the de facto for architectural visualisation (and computer games) and would be suitable for advanced usage.
There’s still lots you’ll have to build as there is a limited choice out there. Some models will have to be adjustable so can be moved into position. Slings, high reach excavators, grapples, shears, man baskets, rubble piles, dust suppression equipment, asbestos staff, cutting gear, skid steer with claw are examples of equipment you’ll have to source or build.

And then there are the material libraries. After throwing in the heavy CAD hardware requirements and annual software subscriptions you could be looking at making and sustaining a substantial effort to knock out visualisations which does explain the high cost of work from visualisation ‘studios’.

company having a demolition set-up, the cost and timeframes would not be feasible. I guess that construction companies or developers may never pre-requisite, demand or expect visuals from a demolition company, only maybe in unusual cases. Therefore, I don’t think that there will be a great change in five to ten years which will save demolition companies money and hassle. I hope that I’m wrong and that CG will take off.
In conclusion, regarding the future regular use of demolition visualisation within the industry, I’d say that unless you can find someone very keen and cheap to sit in your office and knock out basic visuals you would be better outsourcing the work. If you don’t go with a specialist visualisation

drones
Drones Are Our Friends Some demolition companies have voiced concerns over the ability of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and drones to “spy” upon them from on high. But, as DemoVision’s Fred Anthony reports, only those flouting regulations need be fearful while, for the rest of the industry, drones can be a vital tool.
Rather than calling for an explanation as to how this had happened or a review of the methods used, many pointed out that demolition’s shortcomings had been captured by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) as if drones had somehow caused the problem rather than merely highlighting it. The fact is that a drone’s ability to capture both still photography and video footage from previously inaccessible locations and angles should be seen as a benefit rather than a threat.
The controlled explosive demolition of a waterfront tower block in Miami recently was initially greeted with applause from the industry for another blowdown well done. A few days later, however, footage emerged on YouTube and on local newspaper websites that showed that material ejected from the building had landed in the environmentally-sensitive Biscayne Bay just a few metres away.
Up and Close The ability to map and analyse a site prior to the commencement of demolition works is now as commonplace as a site walk-around. Show me a company that has not used Google Earth to map a demolition site and I’ll show you a demolition company that submits tenders produced on a typewriter.
14
But Google Earth – good as it is – can only show you so much. It will not show any existing cracks or faults in the exterior of a building; it will give you only a rough idea of what neighbours the site; and it may completely overlook the presence of smaller, less obvious structures that might impact upon demolition methods and processes.
And what about the ability to look at all sides of a fire-damaged or partially-collapsed structure without having to put a worker in harm’s way? The resulting photos and film footage can make an invaluable addition to a project’s documentation bank, can feed into the Building Information Modelling (BIM) system that is becoming increasingly widespread, and can help demonstrate to clients the specific challenges facing the demolition contractor. Moreover, they would make an invaluable addition to risk assessments and method statements.
A drone faces no such challenges. In the hands of an experienced pilot, a drone can provide high definition photos and video that highlight – in detail – very specific parts of a structure that could not be reached in any other way other than asking a man (or woman) to work at height.
Regulatory Obstacles And don’t think the benefits are limited to high rise blocks either. Imagine having the ability to take a close look at the condition and make-up of a pier or jetty that would be inaccessible or dangerous to reach.
Of course, the price-point of drones has put them within the reach of most demolition contractors. A relatively simple quadcopter drone with a relatively simple camera would have set you back £3,000 or more just a few years ago.
15
drones
Today, drones equipped with cameras producing cinema-quality 4K films and photos are available for under £1,000. But before you fire up your Amazon account and hit the Buy It Now button, drone ownership comes with its obstacles and stumbling blocks.
According to Article 166 of the Civil Aviation Authority’s regulation for unmanned aircraft of 20 kg or less: l The operation (of the UAV) must not endanger anyone or anything. l The aircraft must be kept within the visual line of sight (normally taken to be within 500 metres horizontally and 400 feet vertically) of its remote pilot (i.e. the ‘person in charge’ of it).
The greatest stumbling block, as with all things demolition-related, is regulation. Unless you’re going to be flying a drone on a demolition site miles from anywhere, chances are that you will potentially fall foul of legislation controlling the use of UAVs.
16
drones Operations beyond these distances must be approved by the CAA (the basic premise being for the operator to prove that he/she can do this safely). l Small unmanned aircraft (irrespective of their mass) that are being used for surveillance purposes are subject to tighter restrictions with regard to the minimum distances that you can fly near people or properties that are not under your control. If you wish to fly within these minima, permission is required from the CAA before operations are commenced. l CAA permission is also required for all flights that are being conducted for aerial work (i.e. in very simple terms, you are getting paid for doing it). l The 'remote pilot' has the responsibility for satisfying him/herself that the flight can be conducted safely.
Parts from the Air
Careful note should be taken that the collection of images of identifiable individuals, even inadvertently, when using surveillance cameras mounted on a small unmanned surveillance aircraft, will be subject to the Data Protection Act.
Also, with YouTube now ranking alongside parent company Google as the world’s biggest search engine, the PR and publicity power of drone footage should not be underestimated.
But a drone brings with it more than just the ability to look at a structure before demolition begins. Drones offer the opportunity to monitor and continually audit a demolition project as it progresses, either openly or covertly. And while we would not necessarily encourage drones being used to create a “Big Brother” environment within the demolition industry, they are rather good at locating and identifying “hidden” stashes of scrap that may or may not be going out through the site’s side door. Drones have also been developed that can follow the wearer of a tracking device. There will surely come a time when site audits and safety reviews are recorded in this way for posterity and, potentially, for evidence.
And there is at least one company that is currently looking to deliver machine parts via drone, overcoming traffic delays and reducing carbon emissions in one fell swoop.
As this Act contains requirements concerning the collection, storage and use of such images, Small Unmanned Aircraft operators should ensure that they are complying with any such applicable requirements or exemptions.
Admittedly, the current geographic range and carrying capacity of drones would limit any such services to little more than a mile and weights of a kilogramme or less.
Further details of the specific regulations can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/obfcnk8
But as battery technology evolves, the day when spare parts arrive from the air is drawing ever closer.
Against this background, if a drone is something you might use only a few times a year, it might be more cost-effective to employ a drone specialist such as DemoVision on an as-and-when-necessary basis.

Picking up Good Vibrations Along with the control of noise and dust, vibration monitoring has become a key driver in the UK demolition industry. And, according to Caption Data Limited and Vibration Monitoring Services Limited, that trend shows no signs of abating.
With changes in legislation, working practices, advances in technology and machinery, vibration monitoring could look very different in five to 10 years’ time.
Building specifications could insist on ground or party wall vibration monitoring as an essential tool to help minimise the damage caused by excessive vibration levels arising from demolition activities and other construction works.

V i b r at i o n M o n i t o r i n g As available space becomes tighter it will be imperative to protect surrounding properties from the effects of excessive vibration during such works, particularly in cities across the UK.
Advancing Technology Advances in technology will be key to monitoring residential properties, sensitive structures, electrical sub stations, railway viaducts, gas mains and buildings of all types whilst works are being carried out. Companies are already requested to take care planning the sequence of works in order to minimise the transfer of vibration to neighbouring properties. Vibration monitoring already provides peace of mind to project managers that they may continue their works, aware of the ground-borne vibration levels, allowing them to manage work methods to minimise vibrations generated by their activities. When carrying out works which may produce vibration, all potential receptors must be considered, with particular attention paid to occupiers and users of buildings, hospitals or laboratories and cosmetic or structural damage to buildings or heritage sites. People’s response to perceptible vibration is accentuated by their fear of building damage and complaints of vibration are usually concerned with fear of the unknown and the potential effects of
relatively low levels of vibration in building. Concerns are best addressed by monitoring affected areas to assess the levels of vibration being generated, keeping this to a minimum and providing reassurance to affected parties.
On the Rise The demand for monitoring vibrations near demolition and other construction works, to protect buildings and structures, appears to be growing significantly. Without being flippant this is to some extent ‘because you can’. What we mean by that is once the availability and low cost is understood, and vibration monitoring equipment can be bought (or even rented) for very modest amounts, which are often completely trivial in the context of the whole project, then all the other factors become irresistible. Factors which include: Formal risk analysis - Given the known risks of vibration to buildings and structures any serious risk assessment is going to consider these, and likely recommend monitoring, so the number of tenders requiring vibration monitoring continues to grow.

( This is not an exhaustive list of standards that relate to the measurement of vibration in buildings.)

Technology Shift
Social responsibility and brand reputation - In the era when a few well-placed comments on social media can carry far and wide, businesses are ever more aware of their social responsibilities and the need to be proactive in protecting their brand reputation
Products are becoming cheaper, more robust, with longer battery life, more sophisticated, with better connectivity. Remote shock and vibration monitoring products now fall under the overall description of the Internet of Things, a rapidly growing industry in itself that will exceed 4.9 Billion connected devices by the end of 2015. Specific developments that will benefit remote shock and vibration monitoring products include the following:
Litigation - Of course we are all aware of the growth in litigation in every walk of life, but especially in large projects with multiple contractors involved, and where when things go wrong accusations will fly, and it is often the person with the best documentation (of risk analysis undertaken and monitoring of risks undertaken) who will prevail.
Availability - Through globalisation and developments in manufacturing processes the world over, means key components that make up remote shock and vibration monitoring systems have much shorter lead times, as a result shortening lead times on monitoring systems,
Culture of prevention rather than cure - Quite rightly we are all interested in solutions that prevent a problem rather than fix it afterwards. Monitoring shock and vibration in buildings and

allowing vibration monitoring projects to begin in days (in most cases) as opposed to weeks, or more. Robustness - Advances in circuitry design, components and manufacturing make modern monitoring products extraordinarily robust. Battery life - Caption Data Limited’s latest remote monitoring product consumes micro-Amps and offers up to 6 years battery life.
Connectivity - For many applications GSM is still a favoured solution and improvements in roaming along with un-steered SIM card technology virtually abolish reception black holes. Alternatives such as Ethernet, WiFi, and whitespace (if available) are all possibilities too – so there is nearly always a solution. For example, Caption Data was able to provide a remote monitoring solution to a lighthouse, situated approximately 13 miles offshore, which enabled first of its kind research to be completed, allowing a team of

researchers to better understand the dynamic structural response of one of the most iconic lighthouses in the British Isles. Local intelligence - The RDL//Vibe by Caption Data offers local intelligence and will monitor up to 6 channels locally in real time at 500Hz, comparing to your alarm thresholds, (which you set and change via the CDLSmartHub), and if any deviations are found it will collect the data for the duration of the event and email a notification to you, so that you can log on to the CDLSmartHub and view or download the data from the event IOT controls and intelligence - By this we mean the ability to add 3rd party algorithms, aggregate data from multiple sources, view units on dashboards with automatic geo-pin markers telling you status information, receive alerts with indelible audit trails, download and share information digitally with colleagues or 3rd parties and more. Secure data - Data is stored on secure servers managed by Caption Data, and every precaution is taken to keep your data safe.
Achieving Convergence The convergence of all the above we believe will continue to drive the use of remote shock and vibration monitoring equipment such as the RDL//Vibe, because if a proactive risk analysis identifies a risk, and a low cost, easy to implement
and use, tried and tested solution is available then to not use it may be viewed as negligent. Vibration Monitoring Services Limited is now in its 10th year offering specialist vibration monitoring to the construction industry. In which time they have seen a steady increase in the requests and requirements for their service during demolition and other construction works. Vibration Monitoring Services Limited provides a full monitoring service from installation of equipment to daily monitoring of the vibration levels generated on site. Contacting the Project Manager (PM) within minutes of alarm thresholds being breached gives the PM peace of mind that he can get on with the task at hand, safe in the knowledge that vibration levels are being monitored to help protect the surrounding buildings and structures.

Data is obtained and presented on a regular basis which can be used to create a greater transparency between construction companies and their stakeholders, assuring them that vibration is kept to a minimum. Vibration Monitoring Services Limited have developed a strong reputation providing quality monitoring from start to finish on projects throughout the UK. Ranging from large sites to domestic property, applications have also included monitoring of sensitive structures such as railway viaducts, railway lines, hospitals, server rooms, electrical sub stations and gas mains. The monitoring system of choice, the RDL//Vibe, offers peace of mind for clients that demolition work does not adversely affect the surrounding buildings or structures.
Tight Spaces As demolition and other construction work is being carried out in smaller and tighter spaces, there is an increased need to protect surrounding buildings, occupants and structures from the vibration that is generated from such activities, and Vibration Monitoring Services Limited are specialists in this area of monitoring. Vibration Monitoring Services Limited work directly with clients to help them keep within the vibration levels specified. Technology such as the RDL//Vibe is helping to achieve these targets by providing constant access to data online along with email and SMS alerts when vibration levels reach alarm thresholds.
Advances in remote monitoring technology, make remote vibration monitoring systems like the RDL//Vibe an extremely effective tool within the vibration monitoring industry. Manufactured by Caption Data, the RDL//Vibe was designed to be robust enough for use in harsh environments such as construction sites yet simple to use and sensitive enough to capture low frequency vibrations. RDL//Vibe systems have been used on hundreds of construction sites throughout the UK to monitor ground-borne vibrations arising from demolition and other constructions works. Since the product’s initial launch, Caption Data have added a range of developments which include: •Introducing roaming sims – to dramatically reduce signal related issues •doubling battery capacity – increasing field life up to 12 months, in some instances •Extended range of geophone frequencies •PPV (Peak Particle Velocity) measurement •Low profile high signal antennae for increased signal range •Enhanced cloud features through the CDLSmartHub In addition to construction sites, RDL//Vibe systems have been used to monitor vibration levels in some of the UK's most prestigious buildings and landmarks such as the Natural History Museum and the most iconic lighthouse in the British Isles, Eddystone and Roman Catacombs in Malta.

Don’t Get Crus Health and S Three years after the Health and Safety Executive introduced its Fee for Intervention scheme and the fines are racking up. Jamie Coyne of Square Mile Broking looks at the figures and suggests some ways that demolition companies can avoid being caught in the HSE net. In 2012 the Health and Safety (Fees) Regulations* came into play. Since then firms have been invoiced with a staggering £21 million in fines or Fees for Intervention (FFIs). Construction and Demolition firms alone have been hit with £6 millon in fines. Many of the reasons for FFIs are for pretty basic requirements like “inadequate welfare facilities” or, in other words, things like the toilets not being fit for purpose. Schedule 2 of the CDM Regulations (2007) states “Suitable and sufficient sanitary conveniences shall be provided or made available at readily accessible places.”
30
ushed by Safety Fines Failing to provide adequate welfare facilities for the number of people on site, unhygienic welfare facilities or faulty welfare facilities (e.g. no running water or hot and cold washing water) could all be highlighted as material breaches of this requirement.
Down the Toilet So take a moment and consider this, one of the top 10 reasons for firms being fined is because of the toilets. A significant issue contributing towards those ÂŁ21 million in fines issued over the last few years is caused by something so basic, something that in the 21st Century we take for granted. We all expect our bathroom at home to function properly, so surely the same should be true for the toilets at work. The HSE released figures in April 2015 showing the enormity of the problem faced by firms. Over 38,000 invoices have been raised hitting a similar number of companies. This means that nearly 70 companies are being fined every working day of the year. What some people overlook is the fact that the fines aggregate up until the problem is rectified. This means that you really need to get on the case immediately, first to prevent the problem and second to remedy it quickly if you are fined. The fee is payable at an eye-watering rate of ÂŁ124 per hour.
31
H e a lt h & S a f e t y If that does not concern you enough then note that the total amount that will be recovered will be based on the total amount of time the HSE takes to identify and conclude its regulatory action. The costs can increase further if expert opinion is required as the hourly rate for each expert will need to be taken into account. So it really is easy to see how and why the fines ramp up quickly.
And there’s more Paying the fine may not be the end of the matter. Invoices will be issued every 2 months until the inspector is satisfied the breach has been remedied. So paying the fine does not mean there will not be further fines. Worse still, paying a fine

could be used as evidence against you in future criminal prosecutions – effectively an admission of guilt. Hardest hit of all is the construction sector which includes the demolition industry averaging over 500 fines per month and over £6 million in fines. This does make you wonder what we have all learned in the last three years and why we are not putting a stop to the underlying issues. Maybe the first step the industry needs to take is to simply be aware of the main reasons why demolition companies are likely to fall foul of the regulations. By identifying the main reasons then it would make sense that it should be easier to mitigate against

them. When you consider the long-standing problem of asbestos not only does it feature twice in the top 10 reasons for fines but, more soberingly, it claims around 4,500 deaths per year. It is the ‘hidden killer’ especially in the construction and demolition industries. We all appreciate that drilling, sawing, cutting or demolishing may disturb asbestos materials and release deadly fibres. This is a key area that inspectors will check, and if you are putting people at risk from asbestos exposure you are liable to prosecution along with charges under the FFI scheme. So, by coupling a robust survey process with a
training programme two of the top risks can be mitigated in one hit. Find out if there could be asbestos containing materials present. Also, if the building was originally built before 2000, you need a survey. If it turns out asbestos containing materials are likely to be disturbed as part of the project, they need to be protected from disturbance, or removed in accordance to the Control of Asbestos Regulations*.
Snakes in Ladders Falls from height are the biggest killer in the construction and demolition world accounting for the majority (51 percent) of fatal injuries, and a large proportion (29 percent) of major injuries.

H e a lt h & S a f e t y Unsafe scaffolds, lack of edge protection, poorly planned roof works and dangerous access methods are all elements of dangerous work at height that can lead to enforcement action, falls from height, and avoidable injuries and fatalities on site. The HSE has identified poorly erected scaffolding as one of the key faults.
This will in turn help better protect you, your staff and the public – but also get improved terms and premiums from the insurance market. A guide detailing the Top 10 FFI exposures and how to prevent them is available to download* at http://tinyurl.com/oq3l3p3. Once all of the right measures are in place it is then worth assessing whether insurance should also be considered. At Square Mile Broking we have spoken to various trade sectors including members of leading trade associations and have created a cost effective insurance solution. We have negotiated a Directors’ and Officers’ Liability product that includes full cover for FFI, along with unlimited advice from solicitors on any business topic, not just FFI.
Yet this problem can be avoided by ensuring that any work at height is properly planned, scaffolding is erected and checked, any working platforms are safe, suitable fall prevention and restraint equipment is used and that fragile materials and open edges have barriers or are covered over.which I’ m not so well informed.
Prevention Not Cure It is surely good business sense and common sense to put the right risk management plans in place. The moral and corporate social responsibility demands are reason enough, never mind the effects on your business.
Our solicitors employ specialists in HSE and FFI who will support you throughout the HSE’s intervention – which could range from an inspection only to a full and lengthy investigation including caution interviews. We are all fully aware of the tremendous health and safety efforts and improvements made within the demolition sector in recent years, as is highlighted by consistently improving accident statistics.
A recent cautionary tale from a HSE press release reinforces the importance of sound risk management and the moral duty to act properly. A building firm was found guilty of corporate manslaughter after an employee fell through a roof. Tragically the employee was killed.
With this in mind, and with the knowledge continually improving within all job levels in the sector, it seems a safe bet that these areas of HSE Enforcements and FFI actions will also steadily reduce year on year. Reference Health and Safety (Fees) Regulations http://tinyurl.com/pgpnckg Control of Asbestos Regulations http://tinyurl.com/ltb4np3 Top 10 FFI breaches http://tinyurl.com/oq3l3p3
Then the firm in question was fined £200,000, the owner faced imprisonment and the business was forced to advertise what had happened in the local press and on their website. So it is clear that loss of life, fines, imprisonment and business reputation are all at stake. Any good insurance broker should be able to advise you on risk management and assess the existing plans and arrangements.

Breaking out th Despite its rough-around-theedges reputation, the demolition sector is a hot-bed of ingenuity and innovation. DemolitionNews editor Mark Anthony casts his eye over some of the hottest new kit to swell the industry’s ranks.
10
There was a time, not so long ago, when the demolition man’s equipment armoury started and finished largely at the trusty sledgehammer. But demolition has changed. Indeed, with its willingness to embrace new technology and to pioneer new equipment to facilitate faster, cleaner and safer methodologies, the sector has become a proving ground for new equipment. The industry was among the first to utilise excavators as tool carriers rather than diggers; it was quick to embrace a bewildering array of evermore specialist attachments; and it helped pioneer high reach excavators that went from “novelty” 20 metre machines of a decade ago to the 50 and 60+ metre behemoths of today with scarcely a pause for breath.
36
he Innovations High visibility roof glass and a purpose-built guarding package protect the operator and ensure clear vision of the Prodem attachment. A key change is the addition of underslung counterweight which allows the machine to wield some three tonnes of tool and coupler without turning the machine into a nodding donkey and giving the operator seasickness. In truth, however, the base machine has proved surprisingly stable, even with the extended boom.
Looking back over these developments, however, it is interesting to note that they come in all shapes and sizes. And while, understandably, it is the big machines that grab the headlines, it is often the smaller items of kit that have the greatest impact. 10. If it has an Achilles heel, the high reach excavator’s weak spot is its need for space. In order to work safely and efficiently, a high reach machine must be positioned many metres away from the structure being demolished. Which is fine if you’re working in the middle of a field but which is constantly challenging if you’re working on an inner city site or in a confined space. But, as ever, necessity proved to be the mother of invention with the arrival of a zero tailswing excavator boasting some 16 metres of reach.
To see the machine in action, please visit: http://tinyurl.com/n9wb9bf 9. A driving force in the development of new demolition equipment is the need to segregate materials for optimum recycling levels. And so Caterpillar’s new G310 GC, G313 GC and G315 GC demolition and sorting grapples have been greeted with open arms by the demolition and recycling fraternity.
9
The machine in question – which is owned and operated by Rye Demolition - started out as a standard Hyundai 235. And while at first glance the modified unit just appears to have an extended front end, there’s much more to the Kocurek-modified machine than meets the eye. The machine now includes a dedicated demolition boom, a new intermediate boom and dipper that provide it with its 16 metres of reach.
37
7 k i t ta l k
The Cat G300 GC grapples are designed for hydraulic excavators with operating weights ranging from 10 to 19 metric tons and are purpose-built specifically to sort out debris at source or strip a building before final demolition. The G300 GC grapples are available with a fixed upper head or with a top plate for mounting an adapter bracket, which allows the grapple to be exchanged among multiple carriers.
7. The ability to switch attachments quickly and efficiently is a constant theme in the modern demolition world. And while many have embraced quick couplers, attachment specialist Worsley Plant has put its own spin on the issue with the Crossover bucket or XO for short. The unit is a bucket frame that can be connected to several work modules, enabling users to switch between modes in as little as 10 minutes rather than changing buckets.
Purpose-built for demolition and sorting applications, the new grapple has a low height and features a durable shell and hinge design in its construction. Hydraulic components are fully protected, and the one piece push bar, provides powerful closing forces for the grab shells.
There are three modules available: the SB Module; SC Module; and the SV Module. The SB Module is ideal for screening top soil or using for padding pipelines and cables. The rotating blades process even the most moist top soil and are available in several spacings.
8. Rammer is a brand that has built its reputation on innovation. And this year, the company delivered yet another new twist on the proven hydraulic hammer concept in the shape of the Rammer 4099 PRO. Suitable for carriers in the 34 to 55 tonne operating weight range, the new model comprises all the key features that have made Rammer the world’s leading hydraulic hammer brand, together with a number of key additions that take the Rammer 4099 PRO to the extreme. The 3,750 unit benefits from a sealed housing structure that prevents the ingress of dust and dirt, thereby extending the working life of both the breaker and the tool. A top cover plate has sealed through apertures for stump hydraulic hoses and features sealed hose connections for grease, air and water.
The SC module is the preferred choice when you need to grind lumpy materials such as topsoil. The crushing blades push the materials through the blades to make it finer. Applications also include mixing and aerating compost, grinding packed materials to make them loose, and crushing roof tiles and wood. Finally, the SV Module is based on a vibrating movement in conjunction with a screening mesh (available in various sizes). It is ideal for separating sand from paving stones for reuse, screening the sand or other loose and dry materials, and shaking waste and dirt out of recyclable material.
38
k i t ta l k Two different sizes of the Crossover bucket will be launched initially. The XO2090 is recommended for excavators over 5 tons and the XO2150 for excavators over 8 tons.
5
You can check out a video of the XO in action here: http://tinyurl.com/p4pkvfm 6. Eagle-eyed visitors to the recent PlantworX exhibition might have spied a particularly smart looking Volvo high reach excavator tucked away round the back of the manufacturer’s stand. That machine was – and still is – destined for the new demolition division of crane hire giant Quinto.
6 The EX380EHR is part of the latest line-up of excavators from Volvo and arrives in full high reach spec without a visit to Ipswich-based modifier Kocurek. In this form, the 40 to 45 tonne operating weight machine has a pin height reach of 23 metres and must surely rank as one of the smartest-looking high reach machines in the UK. 5. You know how some things are just, you know, right? The iPhone, for example, is just right. The Coca Cola logo, the Audi R8, New York’s Chrysler Building. All just right. Well add to that list the new Liebherr R 974 demolition spec excavator that has recently trundled onto the Didcot A site to spearhead the demolition of this defunct coal and oil-fired power station. That Liebherr are among the premium providers of demolition excavators has never been in any doubt. But there is something – some je ne sais quoi – about this machine that takes the really good into utterly exceptional territory.
40
; LS ! ,THP S ! ZHS LZ' TJS JVT
k i t ta l k It might be the clean lines, the minimalist yet wellprotected styling, or the massive fiddler crab claw red attachment slung from the machine’s dipper. But, whatever it is, this machine is a bit special. Beneath the armoured skin of this Coleman and Company-liveried behemoth beats a heart that is pure Liebherr. It is powered by a fuel efficient and emissions compliant Liebherr D 9508 8 cylinder diesel engine developing 400 kW (that’s 544 horses worth) of power.
The machine – which goes by the nickname “Stanley” is carried on a VH-HD tracked undercarriage with 750 mm double-grouser track pads and carries 16 tonnes of counterweight, 10 tonnes of which is removable mechanically. The unit is operated from a demolition-specific cab with a full guarding package and 30 degree tilt. Extra comfort seat and air conditioning make the cab a genuinely pleasant place to be. But it is at the business end of the machine that the Liebherr R 974 really shines.

k i t ta l k 4. It takes a bold company to enter a mature market. But Miller GroundBreaking did precisely that with the launch of its new hydraulic hammer range. The 19-model range, which is suitable for carriers in the 0.5 to 100 tonne operating weight range, was put through its paces by North East of England demolition companies MGL and Thompsons of Prudhoe and has since been embraced by hirer Hewden.
3
You can see the hammers in action here: http://tinyurl.com/ovnml97 3. Not content with taking delivery of “Stanley”, Birmingham-based Coleman & Company purchased a bespoke and remotely-controlled 21-tonne excavator that combines a JCB JS190 upper structure with a JS220LC undercarriage and rubber track pads. The result is a machine powerful enough to deploy a 4-tonne multi-processor attachment without exceeding a gross weight of 25 tonnes.
In standard mode, the machine is equipped with a basic boom and multi-coupling system. A six metre plug in boom fitted with high pressure hydraulic lines can be switched over in a matter of minutes, while a 2.9 metre stick features an oversized bucket ram. The machine features an additional hydraulic control circuit to control the massive LaBounty MSD 7500R attachment supplied by ECY Haulmark.
The development of the groundbreaking machine has required close co-operation between Coleman Engineering Services, dealer Gunn JCB and JCB Heavy Products in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. The new excavator was purpose designed for a project at Birmingham New Street Train Station. “We asked JCB to design a bespoke machine that could carry out specific tasks in high risk and technically challenging environments. Nothing was ever an issue or problem,” says Coleman & Company technical manager, Chris Holland. “It was more a challenge the company rose to.”

And this year saw the arrival of one of the biggest in the ranks of Scottish contractor Dem-Master. The customised Liebherr and Kocurek built R 984C is a one of kind and boasts a reach of a staggering 70 metres. The machine was put to work at Tarfside Oval where it is currently taking down one of the four tower blocks that dominate the local skyline.

Designed to replace the crawler crane and wrecking ball, the high reach facilitated more precise demolition for greater safety and greatly enhanced recycling and materials segregation.

Fleet Commander Telematics will change the way in which demolition contractors monitor and control their vehicle and equipment fleets, according to Alastair Houston, head of national fleet Sales at Northgate plc
What can be done to combat this challenge? A simplified response would include the words ‘visibility’ and ‘control’ and whether the fleet manager is operating cars, vans, minibuses or plant vehicles, this control can be acquired through the introduction of telematics software. There is little doubt that the adoption of telematics amongst fleet operators is increasing and so should more businesses be considering the benefits of integrating telematics into their fleet? We have summarised some of these key benefits to help businesses make informed decisions around fleet management best practice. Broadly speaking, the benefits centre on cost efficiencies, reduced CO2 emissions, improved customer service as well as reduced fleet risk.
The UK’s roads are becoming increasingly congested, a problem that predicted to cost the British economy more than £300 billion over the next 16 years. At the same time, customers are demanding a faster turnaround of deliveries and higher levels of customer service than ever before. These changing consumer attitudes and the fast pace of our modern lives isn’t set to change any time soon, so it’s crucial that businesses adapt in the face of increasing pressure through improved operational performance.
Improving Behaviour For companies that want to focus on making efficiencies and reducing costs, telematics delivers a variety of benefits. As increased visibility of driver behaviour means driving styles can be positively influenced to improve business efficiencies and enable businesses to operate safe fleets. By monitoring driver behaviour, you can pinpoint inefficient driving behaviour such as heavy acceleration and harsh breaking.

Logistics Reducing Fuel Costs
Telematics can also help you spot potentially dangerous drivers and then introduce appropriate training courses to help them improve their skills. Another key benefit from a business improvement point of view is that you will be able to pinpoint the location of your drivers. By doing this, you will be able to identify the location of stolen vehicles and any staff who are using the vehicle out of working hours (which means they could be uninsured and using company fuel for personal use).
By reducing fuel, businesses can also simultaneously reduce CO2 emissions through improved driver behaviour, as key performance indicators can be set to help businesses monitor and reduce CO2. If your company is a PLC, it is important to be able to demonstrate a reduction in your carbon footprint on an annual basis (to meet ISO 14001 and 19001 standards), both from a perception and a money-saving point of view. Meeting, and indeed exceeding, customer expectations is top of the list for customer-focused brands and this is where the benefits of telematics can really come into their own. With customers looking for better communication and certainty around delivery times, Northgate Vehicle Monitoring enables accurate time management by providing minuteby-minute updates on the status of your fleet.
Additional features include the ability to export data reports, making it a powerful business improvement tool. Morgan Sindall has proved that Northgate’s vehicle monitoring system can aid employee engagement and boost morale in the area of driver behaviour. The company recently named Mick McHugh the winner of its quarterly Driver Challenge competition, which aims to develop and reward best practice.
Duty of Care
Many businesses also utilise telematics software to monitor driver idling and by doing so can significantly improve business efficiency. This can be incredibly useful for improving customer service levels, especially if the telematics systems can also calculate efficient route planning. Some systems also allow the vehicle to identify the quickest, most efficient route to a destination, saving money, time and ultimately improving service delivery.
Safety and improved driver behaviour are interlinked, and telematics delivers the added benefit enabling businesses to improve fleet safety. Morgan Sindall promote exactly these benefits, having been able to reduce off-hire damage, in-life damage, fuel consumption and accident damage by improving driver behaviour and recording a 2030% reduction in speeding instances. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers have a statutory duty to carry out a health and safety risk assessment of their employees which includes any driving activity on the road. Furthermore, by law, you can’t work more than 48 hours a week on average. Therefore, telematics provides an excellent way for employers to be able to monitor hours driven and the number of breaks taken and thereby reduce fleet risk.
The ability to set KPIs and targets means that fleet managers and business owners can see a clear return on investment through adopting telematics. So, if your business is focused on safety and efficiencies and is operating within a challenging consumer-oriented climate, telematics could offer the perfect solution for you.

Recycling Targets Mask WasteProblems In 2012, 62 percent of construction, demolition and excavation waste in Europe was recycled according to a recent report from Frost & Sullivan. But Peter Craven, head of marketing at CDE Global, argues that rather than demonstrating success these targets are masking wider problems in the CD&E waste recycling sector across Europe. However, closer examination of the figures reveals that there is a huge difference between the top performers and those who as yet have not grasped the opportunity presented by C&D waste recycling. Those member states that are on target have either hit the target already or will do so without much more effort.
The Waste Framework Directive (WFD) sets a target for 70 percent recycling of construction, demolition and excavation waste across Europe by 2020. According to the latest figures available the amount of this material that was recycled was 61.8 percent. The straight presentation of this figure alone would indicate that progress is being made and the EU target is achievable.
On the flip side, those member states that will miss the target are so far behind schedule that it’s not achievable anyway.

An EU report from June 2013 titled ‘Ambitious waste targets and local and regional waste management’ includes the following commentary: “..best practices in Europe show that recycling rates over 80 percent and 90 percent are feasible.
Driving Improvements What is the purpose of any target? Surely it is to drive improvements, increase efficiency, encourage innovation? The 70 percent recycling target from the WFD does none of these things in its current form. By not addressing this issue now we will waste the next six years waiting to report on a target – when we already know the answer.
For those countries who are already achieving higher re-use, recycling and recovery rates the WFD does not provide an incentive to achieve higher targets. In principle, differentiated targets for these member states could be set in the WFD or alternatively in their national legislation.”
The UK, Germany, France, Benelux and the Alpine States will all hit the 70 percent target – some have reached it already – without having to change anything about how they approach the recycling of construction, demolition and excavation waste for the next six years. The Nordics, Iberia, Italy and the countries in Central & Eastern Europe will all miss the target – but will have made some investment in basic processing technologies for this material in an effort to demonstrate some degree of effort to reach the target.
It is clear that there is recognition from industry commentators and at EU level that the 70 percent target from the WFD is no longer fit for purpose. However, any search for an alternative seems to have a very blinkered view and fails to ask two very important questions: 1. Does a ‘one size fits all’ approach work? 2. Are the targets focused in the right way – will they drive efficiency, protect the environment, encourage innovation?
While the industry focuses its efforts on a meaningless 70 percent recycling target the volume of CD&E waste produced across Europe will rise to over 1.1 billion tons per year – a 26 percent increase on the current level.
One Size Fits All If we look at the first question – does a ‘one size fits all’ approach work? It is obvious from the latest figures available that the targets have created a very clear split between those member states that will achieve the target and those who will not.
A recent report from Frost & Sullivan reported that “While 95 percent of this (C&D) waste is reusable, recycling is just not being managed properly.”

Wa s t e & R e c y c l i n g To be able to accurately predict this six years in advance of the deadline is all the evidence that is required that the current targets need to be looked at again. If we are to look at these targets again then it is very clear that the targets need to be constructed with some allowances made for the individual market conditions within each member state.
of this is recycled products that are only suitable for very low value construction applications (road base, general fill). It is also clear that backfilling is still the dominant application for most of the recycled construction, demolition and excavation waste in Europe. Within the WFD the targets to be achieved by 2020 are “Preparation for re-use, recycling and backfilling of 70 percent construction and demolition waste.” This seems to suggest that there is recognition that backfilling does not constitute recycling – yet when material is used for backfilling it is currently included within the recycling rates reported by the member states.
Member States where there are limited volumes of virgin materials are obviously going to perform better than states where virgin materials are in abundance. Member states with high landfill taxes are obviously incentivising the recycling of C&D waste material. There are some member states with relatively very low landfill costs so the disposing of C&D waste is still the most economically viable option. While this is not sustainable in the long term landfill taxes would need to rise by a huge multiple to bring these member states into line with others where high landfill charges already exist. This is simply not achievable by the 2020 deadline as no sitting government is going to stand over an increase as dramatic as this.
The reason for including backfilling within the reported numbers is easy to understand – it makes it very easy to hit the 70 percent target by simply introducing the most basic processing technologies and producing material with little or no commercial value. This is a fundamental flaw in the current approach to CD&E waste recycling in Europe. The targets as they currently exist are simply aimed at reducing the volume of CD&E waste that is sent to landfill. This fails to recognise the valuable resource that CD&E waste is and the potential that exists for the production of higher value materials from this waste stream.
All of this assumes that simply measuring the volume of C&D waste that is recycled is the best way to drive improvements and innovation in the sector. This leads us on to the second question: Are the targets focused in the right way – will they drive efficiency, protect the environment, encourage innovation?
While there is no doubt that there is a requirement for materials to be used in low value construction applications it is not doing anything for the perception of recycled aggregates when this is seen by many as the only potential use for this material. By introducing the advanced processing systems available for the processing of CD&E waste we can expand the range of applications for this material and change the perception of recycled sand and aggregates.
Low Value Applications The vast majority of CD&E waste in Europe is processed using basic processing technologies – basic size reduction (crushing) and classification (screening) technology is employed. The end result

Wa s t e & R e c y c l i n g It is only by doing this that we will achieve the aim of maximising the potential that exists from the efficient recycling of construction, demolition and excavation waste.
Viable Alternative The evidence exists that recycled aggregates are a viable alternative to virgin aggregates in concrete for example – yet only a tiny proportion of recycled material across Europe is currently used in concrete manufacturing. Australian government guidelines state that up to 30 percent of recycled aggregate can be used for structural concrete without any noticeable different in workability and strength when compared to virgin aggregates. Many in the virgin aggregates business see recycled material as a threat when in fact it is exactly the opposite. The exploitation of recycled aggregates to their full potential ensures we protect aggregate supply from a sustainable source. It prolongs the life of the finite resources over which we are merely the guardians.
This in turn creates demand from material producers for these advanced processing systems who need to invest in this technology in order to stay competitive and meet the new demands of their customers. This in turn forces equipment manufacturers to continue to develop new ways of processing this material – to drive innovation in the processing technologies available in order to maintain their own competitive advantage. All of these things combine to change the perception of recycled material and ensure we are in a position to efficiently deal with the 1.1 billion tons of this material that will be generated across Europe by 2020. Another indirect benefit of being proactive with this is that we address the difficulties in recruiting people to the construction materials and recycling sectors.
To answer the question – do the current C&D waste recycling targets drive efficiency, protect the environment and encourage innovation? The answer is a resounding ‘No’. If we instead target the increased use of recycled C&D waste into higher value construction applications such as concrete we can turn this around. This would encourage the use of the advanced processing technologies that exist for this material which will produce recycled sand and aggregates with a much broader scope of application.
We all play a part in demonstrating that we are operating in a 21st century industry that is prepared to go over and above basic adherence to legislation. By demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and maximising value from recycled materials we make our industry a much more attractive proposition as an innovative sector with a bright future. This is essential if we are to remain relevant, stay viable and secure the future innovation that will keep our sector thriving and strong.
Building Trust Increased specification of these higher value materials builds trust in the material and improves the perception of recycled material, leading to increased demand.

‡™ ‘”Â?Ǩ The construcĆ&#x;on of a new 30 story hotel at the juncĆ&#x;on of 34th Street and 9th Ave in ManhaĆŠan required the excavaĆ&#x;on of deep foundaĆ&#x;ons in very diĸcult rock condiĆ&#x;ons. For obvious reasons, drill and blast is not an opĆ&#x;on when excavaĆ&#x;ng in ManhaĆŠan. As a result, contractors are forced to look at alternaĆ&#x;ve methods to break rock. With several years experience excavaĆ&#x;ng in New York, there are few excavaĆ&#x;on contractors with more experience in the area than the Red Hook ConstrucĆ&#x;on Group. Using a mixture of drilling with chemical and mechanical rock spliĆŤng techniques combined with hydraulic breakers, Red Hook excavated down to the required level. Profiling the walls back to the site boundaries proved to be extremely diĸcult due the very hard nature of the rock. Regardless of the size of breaker employed, progress with profiling went at a very slow pace. The breaker was unable to break material oÄŤ the wall surface because the chisel kept bouncing oÄŤ the wall surface. In addiĆ&#x;on to slow progress, important components in the breakers were rapidly wearing out resulĆ&#x;ng in expensive maintenance costs. Site CondiĆ&#x;ons The boundary between two diÄŤerent rock types passed diagonally across the job site. On one side, the rock was a dark grey schist; hard but relaĆ&#x;vely easy to break and excavate. On the other side was a light and dark, banded gneiss; ex-
Production Results The drum cutter was brought on site to see if it would accelerate progress in profiling the walls that had proved to be so difficult using breakers. When this report was written, the ER 2000 drum cutter, installed on a Kobelco SK500 supplied by Company Wrench, had spent 4 x 12 hour days working on these walls, In this time, it came close to completing the profiling work on the two walls, a task that the contractor had spent over 4 weeks trying to achieve. In addition to profiling, the contractor carried out some tests using the ER 2000 drum cutter to do some floor excavation. Progress proved to be very slow in the hardest areas and it was decided to go back to using the drill and burst techniques.
Rock below green lines requiring profiling back to grade.
Pick Consumption Before starting with the drum cutter, the contractor knew that pick consumption would be high. When using the drum cutter intensively, between 25 to 50 picks per being changed per day. To reduce pick consumption, maximum oil flow was reduced to reduce rotation speed in free air. By reducing the speed when the drum cutter makes contact with the rock, we reduce the opportunity for the rock to wear the surface of the pick and extend pick life. When evaluating the costs of replacing picks, this must be compared with the costs and results of alternative methods.

Conclusions In such hard operaƟng condiƟons, no one expects miraculous producƟon rates. However everything is relaƟve and compared to the costs and progress achieved with alternaƟve profiling methods, the drum cuƩer provides an eīecƟve profiling soluƟon. The high pick consumpƟon is not due to any poor design in the drum cuƩer but due to the very hard and abrasive rock characterisƟcs. These condiƟons are responsible for the lack of progress and higher than average costs using more tradiƟonal excavaƟng methods.
