INSITE A Huge Year Ahead

Every New Year begins with a heady mix of hope and trepidation; of opportunities to grasp and pitfalls to avoid. But few years in recent history begin with such a cocktail of potentially business-altering lows and possible industry highs. At the time of writing, the UK’s place in Europe hangs in the balance and with it a potentially cataclysmic shift in the availability of migrant labour upon which the demolition sector has become so heavily reliant. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump seems to take a step closer to impeachment with each passing day and with each new revelation. Regardless of personal politics, any such action could cause economists to suffer yet another fit of uncertainty which could also impact upon the global demolition industry. And the sad demise of Hawk Plant proves that the fallout from the collapse of construction giant Carillion is far from over. Yet for all the potential lows, 2019 begins with much to look forward to. For the equipment enthusiasts, 2019 is going to be a massive year with the Bauma show in Germany, quickly followed by PlantworX here in the UK and then the DemoExpo for those that like their equipment with a demolition twist. In addition to being the largest gathering of demolition equipment in the UK in 2019, the DemoExpo show will also provide the launch pad for a brand new and limited edition DemolitionNews book called Demolition Talk. So make sure you’re there. This time last year, the inaugural British Demolition Awards was a pipe dream. But following a truly memorable launch at The Belfry in 2018, the awards will be back bigger, better and in a new venue in Manchester. As the only truly independent awards in the UK demolition business, the British Demolition Awards is already a key event in the industry calendar. So check out www.britishdemolitionawards.com to take your place among the industry elite. As if that were not enough to look forward to, 2019 will mark the launch of our latest podcast offering - Training Talk – which, as the name suggests, is dedicated to the fast-moving and ever-changing world of demolition training. The first three episodes of that show are already “in the can” ahead of a launch later in January, so watch this space. As ever, the content of our annual Directory looks ahead. And, as always, there is much to look forward to. The industry has demonstrated its resilience in the face of Brexit and the resulting economic uncertainty and it will likely have to do so again in 2019.

Demolition Digital Demolition With more data available than ever before and a host of innovative technologies to exploit, the opportunities for forward thinking contractors to evolve has never been greater. Mark Coleman, CEO of The Coleman Group, explores how the company is using technology to transform its operations for the better.

felt the positive impact of the digital revolution. Some technologies have taken longer than others to be adopted, but as engineers continue to innovate at an unprecedented rate, more and more concepts – sometimes concepts that may have been initially controversial – are now delivering tangible benefits for employers, employees and their customers. Digitisation is changing the way we live and work. From consumers glued to their smart phones for real time news updates, to manufacturers embracing Industry 4.0 and the birth of the smart factory. The Internet of Things, drone deliveries, big data, driverless cars, even voice-activated personal assistants - every aspect of work and play has

In the demolition sector in particular, where safety, control and precision are paramount, this continued development of new technologies is already driving progress and improvement across the industry. We are on the cusp of an innovative shift which could see the birth of entirely autonomous demolition project in the near future, from

4

Demolition concept to completion. And The Coleman Group is proud to lead the way in such innovation, with our Digital Transformation Project – DTP2020. Commitment to innovation There are already some key technological advances in machinery, and as early adopters we have had such equipment in our arsenal for many years. Remote-controlled excavation equipment like the ‘Mega Muncher’ is a great example, where complex demolition

work can be carried out from a platform above the site. However, this goes beyond machinery. At the heart of this project is a commitment to run the business entirely digitally, taking advantage of cloudbased technology across all functions including collaborative working tools, bespoke safety management apps and cloudbased solutions for business support services such as Accounts and HR. Apps are now common place

across the demolition site, from the use of vehicle mileage tracker apps to innovative reporting tools, which enable hazard identification and Health & Safety auditing through a smartphone. The industry has embraced BIM too, with 3D BIM used in the demolition sector for structural analysis and design, and 4D BIM to plan and programme. Presently a BIM model helps us understand the impact of removing structural elements, what kind of machinery the structure will support and how much articulation our demolition equipment will require, as well as how our work will interface with other trades, including any potential clashes. This is where our cohesive, forward-thinking approach to digital innovation really starts to stand out. Looking forwards Digital transformation is also changing the way in which businesses communicate – small transformations which may feel like evolution, but in reality all add up to what will become a digital revolution. At The Coleman Group, we embrace this shift and we encourage conference calls between site, office or home workers to save travel time, and we have introduced WhatsApp groups for quick, easy and free communication between user groups. Projects are run with iPads and mobile devices, offering far greater visibility and speed of response than paper files. Even accounting and invoices are more efficient thanks to digital document signatures.

5

Demolition Employees also have access to Workplace by Facebook, an online collaboration tool which enables workplaces to communicate using a familiar platform – with plans to extend this functionality to clients too for enhanced project communication and support. Ultimately, we are delivering a working environment where employees can work from home as opposed to office, with bulky hardware and desk-based computers being replaced by cloud-based systems accessed via mobile devices. And that’s not all. As part of DTP2020, The Coleman Group is also pioneering the use of 360° videos and pictures, offering an immersive user experience to enhance site surveys and precontract works. Teams no longer have to work from detached pictures to familiarise themselves with a site – we have the technology to ‘walk’ through a virtual construction site, helping people to better understand where they are and what they are going to see next. Health and wellbeing Digital transformation can also play a hugely important part in ensuring employee health and wellbeing too. In the UK one in

four people suffer from anxiety, depression or unmanageable stress and more than 18 million days are lost to sickness absence caused by mental health conditions each year. In total, it is estimated that ill health by employees costs the UK taxpayer £60 billion a year. As a family business we take our responsibility to workplace wellbeing extremely seriously and we are embracing emerging technology to help support it.

This covers everything from technology that can be used to help detect early warning signs of poor health through illness or behaviour changes, to virtual consultations, including the option to speak with a doctor via video link without going to the GP surgery. Other apps include AliveCor’s KardiaMobile app and medicalgrade ECG, which can detect abnormal heart rhythm and

6

report back to your GP, as well as Motorola’s ‘Vital Moto Mod’, an extension to the smartphone that measures heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure. The continued development of the Internet of Things (IoT) means your doctor can now gather data from sensors in your home, your wearable devices and mobile phone, and – with the push of a button – run a detailed analysis of your health. This could include lifestyle, physical activities, social habits, sleep patterns, how and when you take medicine – and the impact all of that has on your health. Crucially, they can do all of this based on far more data than ever before. Drone technologies There are further developments in the pipeline too, namely drone surveys. Developed in pursuit of safety, innovation and excellence, the demolition site of the future will be surveyed and managed by drones, which will continuously assess the progress and safety of the demolition in action, sending coded messages to robotic excavation and remediation equipment on the ground in order to complete the task with little to human involvement at all.

Demolition Drones will also collect and interpret data from machinery and sensors across the site, in order to identify and remediate problems before they occur. The human role will be to manage multiple projects consecutively, using real time data plus 3D and 4D images to demolish each site to specification, on budget and on time.

This might seem like a distant vision, but it’s closer than you think thanks to projects like DTP2020. Unlocking potential The potential of digital demolition is vast, and incredibly exciting. As we stand at the crossroads of technological innovation, we need strong, innovative leaders to embrace the changes and realise

8

that potential, but there is a huge opportunity to automate the industry and reduce risks. By bringing all of these technologies and more together into a coherent digital strategy, The Coleman Group is leading the way into what could be an incredibly exciting future for the demolition and construction industries. Who is with us?

Resilience Recommended Amidst often volatile economic conditions, is there a secret to demolition teams becoming more resilient? RVA Group’s Richard Vann offers his thoughts.

Resilience is an increasingly referenced term in the business environment, but as is often the case with overused words and phrases, its meaning has become somewhat lost on many. So, before the secret to resilience can be considered, it is firstly crucial to know what it really means. Defined as the ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions, resilience may have recently come to the fore given the constant ebb and flow of the economic climate. But irrespective of the internal or external factors imposed on demolition firms, resilience is something that successful businesses have always had to demonstrate. Looking Back It’s easy to look back on our memories of ‘the good times’, and – as a profession – we are quite a reflective bunch. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard recollections of ‘it’s not as good as it used to be’ or ‘you could really make money back in the day’. But in the absence of a time machine there’s not much we can do about the ‘glory days’ of years gone by.

10

Also, whilst perhaps a slightly cynical viewpoint, I would suggest that over any period of say, 10 years, there will have been good – and not so good – moments.

Demolition Demolition businesses have always had to evolve and adapt to succeed. The crux of the matter, however, is that in recent times the pace of the need to change has probably been more furious than at any point in the previous 50 years. The justifiable promotion of HSE excellence to the top of the priority list, clients’ heightened expectations, an increasingly complex legal framework, the

cost of funding and managing the continuity of a business, and the change in geographical market locations, are just some of the factors at play. Yet these factors will change again in the next 12 months, and beyond. They will probably become even more challenging. To mitigate the situation, a ‘survival plan’ must therefore be implemented.

Special Case Demolition has long looked at itself as a ‘special case’ – the ‘Cinderella of the civil engineering sector’. And perhaps it was. But to thrive and grow, it must jettison the self-flagellation persona and accept it is an industrial service just like any other. It is responsible for its own success or lack of it. And here is where the resilience begins. As individual organisations we must focus on the basic principles of any free market entity that aims to progress and be successful – we need to deliver the right product, to the right market, at the right standards and right price, at the right time. Technical skillsets are, without question, key assets for any demolition company, but those alone – in the absence of professional business management, service development, training and investment – are unlikely to break the pattern or create resilient organisations. A mindset shift is of paramount importance. Companies that have already adapted their mentality from small family-run enterprises to robustly-managed corporations, are reaping the rewards. But a long road still lies ahead for the majority. With more than 35 years’ demolition experience, Richard Vann is founder and managing director of decommissioning consultancy RVA Group. He is also past president of the Institute of Demolition Engineers and the Institute of Explosives Engineers.

Demolition

Is Demolition AI a Reality? By applying complex data analysis to common demolition site challenges, it is quite possible that the industry can be made safer, with jobs being completed more efficiently and costeffectively. Therefore, it seems Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be put to good use in the demolition industry.

But there are so many variables to consider before AI can become a viable and realistic part of the demolition landscape. Knocking a building down safely is at least as hard as putting it up in the first place, right. Demolition experts perform dozens of calculations to assess wind direction, debris fields, the right plant and equipment required, the amount of explosive required in order to initiate and direct the fall of the structure.

strength, and the materials used in the building being demolished. It is only through practice and the application of industry bestpractice that demolition experts can perform these calculations. But this is exactly the sort of work that AI is ideally suited to. Intelligent computer algorithms can be used to analyse data from a wide variety of sources. But unlike a human engineer, AI can collect, collate and analyse thousands of factors from hundreds of previous demolition projects.

These calculations can be further complicated by weather conditions, wind direction and

Because AI can analyse so many projects, it can also observe patterns and trends. These

12

observations can then be used to refine demolition techniques for the specific project, further reducing the margin for error. Which helps to further reduce risk and make each future project incrementally that much safer. Now let’s remove humans from the equation for a moment. In an ideal world, all risky tasks could be offloaded to computers or robots for completion. Because of the inherent risks, demolition would be an ideal candidate for deploying robots and in turn avoid putting humans at risk.

Demolition In future, we may see robots entering potentially risky buildings to place demolition charges in precisely calculated locations. Or perhaps even carefully deconstructing buildings brick by brick – methodical, slow and safe in even the most challenging environments. Should the demolition fail to complete, or conditions change significantly, the robots may be damaged – but your workers will be safe from injury. The use of AI and robots also helps to solve one of the biggest challenges in the demolition industry – human error. A well designed AI algorithm will check and re-check thousands of factors in real time, and verify that all recommendations and calculations are accurate and within all applicable safe limits. For now we need AI-free advice. The potential uses for AI are virtually limitless; but they are still a long way off from becoming a common aspect of demolition projects. It could be decades before we see robot demolition engineers working on sites in the UK. In the meantime, you can get more “human” advice on your demolition projects from Veritas Consulting. Give us a call today and let our experts guide you through making your demolition sites safe.

Demolition Preparing for the Tech Revolution Technology has the power to make construction and demolition cleaner, smarter and more efficient – yet progress has been slow. How can the industry take full advantage of intelligent automation? Alastair Hayfield, Research Director at Interact Analysis, shares his insights. Thanks to the universal adoption of advanced technology, the seemingly unstoppable growth of the Internet and a global embracing of mobile communications, technology is moving at a pace not seen since the industrial revolution. But, in some instances, demolition and construction are in danger of being left behind:

Q

Is construction ahead or behind the game when it comes to technology? A. Construction typically lags three to five years behind the automotive sector, for example. The technologies that are happening now in construction were first seen in these segments a number of years ago. But we are seeing a pretty strong adoption of them in construction now that these technologies are becoming more robust and proven.

Q

Which technologies are having an impact right now? A. We are starting to see drone adoption ramping up. At the Intermat exhibition earlier this year, there were a much larger number of companies offering aerial surveying software and drone services than we’ve seen before. In fact, this sector is forecast to be one of the largest applications for drones, with commercial unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used in construction set to be valued in excess of $2 billion by 2022. Electrification meanwhile is a big trend, but it will take longer to bring to market. The introduction of urban low emission zones (LEZs) will supercharge this process. There are now around 200 LEZs, particularly in Europe, so if manufacturers want to continue to operate in major construction cities then they

14

really need to focus on low emission vehicles.

Q

So, manufacturers need to be prepared for a shift in machine design? A. Absolutely. A great example is the Volvo prototype excavator EX2. Although still a working concept, it completely replaces the hydraulic system with electric actuators and that’s quite a big departure because every other piece of construction equipment relies on hydraulics. A move towards electrification like this does bring with it some design challenges, but as we solve some of these issues it frees up engineers to be far more creative with machine design. It stands to reason that a smarter machine with no cab adds more value in terms of space, productivity, fuel efficiency and maintenance costs. It’s exciting to see where we go from here.

Demolition Q

What are the challenges for our electric future? A. Rightly or wrongly there will be questions about reliability, particularly around the battery, as customers look for reassurance that the battery will last the lifetime of the vehicle or have an acceptably long use cycle before replacement. And then there’ll be questions around durability, as these vehicles get used in harsh environments. To answer this, manufacturers need to be able to see the overall picture and factor in a number of challenges, such as getting power to the site, particularly for remote areas. Likely to be most important for the customer, electrification tends to be more expensive at the time of purchase, so moving the conversation towards total cost of ownership, introducing new business models and proving the quality of the machine will be important.

Q

And how will intelligent automation impact the role of the operator? A. There are a lot of scare stories about jobs being replaced by machines, but actually over the next 5-10 years, what we will see is the augmentation of people’s jobs as machines are used to assist rather than replace site activities. For the commercial vehicle market, the driver still has to get out of the cab in many instances and do a job and we’ll see the same for construction, where automation will free them up to do the things they don’t have time for. It is more about increasing safety and productivity than about replacing operators.

Q

You’ve mentioned the commercial vehicle market. Will construction be following the same path? A. It is certainly a good example. Last year there were three or four companies announcing electric solutions, but in the last few months that market has exploded. Now almost every major company is showcasing its electric capabilities, with major investment in battery production. It is likely that construction will follow a similar path, as market competition and increased regulation sets the tone.

Q

Do you see a difference in attitudes to automation and emissions across the regions? A. Europe is having the strongest push on emission-

16

free zones for individual urban areas, but China is taking a more widespread national approach to incentivizing electric vehicles. In terms of the commercial UAVs, China is also set to corner a quarter of the drone market over the next five years. In the USA, there is less of a focus on LEZs, and more of a focus on how electrification can be used to lower freight costs. Some 80 percent of freight in North America is moved by road, so there’s a keen understanding of connecting fuel efficiency with total cost of ownership and profitability. Japan has an ‘i-construction’ initiative to increase the use of technology in the construction industry, including the use of UAVs. This initiative is driven by a need to increase productivity through

Demolition automation and an ageing construction workforce which may lead to a shortage of labour in the coming years.

Q

How will the Internet of Things (IoT) allow us to make full use of these new technologies? A. The IoT will help bring all these technologies together. We need seamless integration of data between machines and applications so that everyone can access relevant information both on-and-off the site. If customers’ financial teams can get live data directly from the machine or from a construction/mining site in terms of how much material is there, its worth and asset costs, then that will provide real value. If we start employing smart machines on construction sites, then their real value comes when we use connectivity and cloud computing to help us get meaningful information from them.

Q

At a corporate level, what should companies be doing to prepare themselves for the future? A. Companies can no longer develop technologies in isolation. It is all about being able to migrate technologies across different divisions and operational group. Volvo is a good example of a Group of business areas that has done a lot with electric buses and is now taking a more strategic look at electrification across all its businesses, including Trucks and Construction Equipment. After all, there’s no point developing electric solutions at great time and expense and not sharing that insight and technology in areas where it may also have benefits.

Demolition A Loader Good Advice

20

Demolition With more and more of a demolition company’s profitability driven by its ability to reclaim, recycle and reuse materials, a wheel loader has become a key tool for handling arisings. In this exclusive article, David Banks, JCB’s Sales Manager – Waste and Recycling Sector, offers guidance for companies seeking to enhance its capabilities with a wheel loader.

As waste and recycling throughputs increase and sites expand, demand for wheel loaders is growing. But what should you look for when seeking a wheel loader that will deliver optimum performance across your business? There are really five key areas to consider: productivity, power, safety, operator comfort and reliability. 1. Productivity Waste and recycling site operators demand that all equipment performs consistently at peak levels of productivity and that means keeping downtime to an absolute minimum. It will help to limit downtime if the design of the vehicle allows maintenance or servicing work to be undertaken as easily as possible, so it is sensible to choose a loader with a single-piece bonnet that makes accessing the diesel and DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) tanks straightforward. Once under the bonnet a machine fitted with group test ports will ensure that checking brake, steering and hydraulic system pressures is easy, while an accessible main fuse box will also slash servicing time further. Consider the loader’s braking system too. Braking systems that use full dual circuit hydraulics with multiple oil-immersed discs will be virtually maintenancefree throughout the wheel loader’s lifespan.

21

Demolition 2. Power Wheel Loaders used on waste and recycling sites will benefit from plenty of lowend torque, maintained over a wide power band. When such a power unit is installed into a machine manufactured from lightweight materials, you can expect an excellent power-to-weight ratio. For fuel economy it’s important that the wheel loader has an engine idle shutdown feature that can safely apply the brakes and turn the machine off after a programmable amount of time.

machine has a hydraulic cooling fan, which automatically reacts to ambient temperature and adjusts the wheel loader’s fan speed to optimise cooling and reduce fuel consumption. An additional benefit is that it will also lower on-site noise.

3. Safety On-site safety is paramount, so to ensure that you choose a wheel loader that has been designed with the well-being of the operator and other site workers in mind, look for the following: • Inclined and equally Fuel consumption can spaced access steps, be further reduced if the complemented by well MTKBRE P2.qxp_MUTLEY fp ad 2 12/07/2018 16:20 Page 1 positioned grab handles that ensure three points of contact at all times; ASE PLEL THE N O CALDESK 40 • Rear97 E HIR 61 225 01 FOR IVE view mirrors IT PET ES! 22

Fender flaps designed keep spray to a minimum.

In addition, to reduce the risk of collisions, it is worth considering technology that alerts the operator to any pedestrian traffic that may be close to the area where the wheel loader is working. For example, Proximity Braking Systems can be fitted to multiple machines on a single site and automatically sound an alarm in the cab and apply the vehicle’s brakes if a person enters a pre-set exclusion zone around the machine. Some advanced Proximity Braking Systems also deliver a warning to the at-risk pedestrian via a vibrating transponder attached to their safety helmet. 4. Operator comfort Wheel loaders work long, hard shifts on busy, noisy and dusty sites, so it’s important that the operator has a spacious cab that is comfortable, quiet, and designed to provide the highest levels of all-round visibility. Look for an isolator-mounted cab, compliant with ROPS/ FOPS standards, and positively pressurised against dust that offers excellent visibility, whether to the front down to the bucket or to the rear. To reduce operator fatigue over the most demanding shifts, seat-mounted controls are hugely beneficial and it’s also important that the driver has good visibility of efficiency data such as fuel use. Full colour LCD screens are

Demolition ideal for providing operating menus and can also act as a monitor for a rear view camera. 5. Robustness and reliability A typical waste site presents an arduous environment for materials handling vehicles so look for extra guarding for the cab and lighting, underbelly protection for the driveline and transmission, and heavy-duty punctureresistant tyres. Robust design will be indicated by an articulation joint with a heavy-duty box section, a heavy-duty centre pin and oversized bush, as well as twin taper roller bearings on the bottom box joints. This setup can easily

tolerate vertical and horizontal loadings. Hoses should be neatly routed and clamped through the articulation joint, well away from any pinch points. A counterweight designed to be larger than the bonnet will protect the rear of the wheel loader, including the rear lights and cooling pack, from damage. Integral steel fluid tanks will offer a far superior solution to the plastic tanks that are used in some machines. JCB’s Wastemaster wheel loader line-up extends from the 9 tonne 411 to the 20 tonne 457, which is designed to work in high output transfer stations and Materials Recovery

24

Facilities, where large volumes of material need to be handled. Typically the machine will be used to load hoppers and trucks and stockpile Municipal Solid Waste and other recyclables. These wheel loaders have been designed to meet the demands of working on arduous sites and feature front and rear light guards, belly guards, a full front screen guard, a carbon filter, a wide core cooling pack and an adjustable hydraulic reversing fan. They are available in a variety of model configurations – all designed to provide safety, efficiency, ease of use, ease of maintenance, productivity, performance, reliability and comfort.

Demolition Cat Goes Remote Caterpillar has introduced a new suite of Cat Connect technology that offers remote equipment diagnostics and software updates to reduce machine and engine downtime and increase efficiency. New Cat Remote Services include two key offerings – Remote Troubleshoot and Remote Flash – that leverage telematics data to allow Cat dealers to remotely keep customers’ equipment operating at maximum production and efficiency.

“A machine or engine not at work isn’t making money for the customer, which cuts into the company’s profitability for the job. Remote Services provide a solution to more effectively and efficiently maintain equipment,” says Herwig Peschl, Caterpillar global marketing manager. “Customers can continue to use their assets while the dealer reviews and diagnoses a fault code from the office. In many instances, if a repair is required, the dealer can then dispatch the right technician with the right parts and tools to fix the machine or engine right the first time, saving time and money.” A new Remote Troubleshoot system analyses real-time asset data, so the dealer can run diagnostics testing on the connected product and pinpoint potential issues. This saves the dealer technician travel time to the jobsite and eliminates equipment downtime during diagnosis. The machine or engine continues to do its job throughout the process, so jobsite productivity doesn’t suffer. Once the cause of the fault code or alarm has been identified, the dealer could possibly resolve the issue remotely, saving time, money and the inconvenience to the customer’s production schedule. If a repair is necessary, dealer technicians are dispatched to the jobsite with the correct information, parts, tools and instructions to make the repair, in the shortest time possible and when it’s convenient for the customer. Remote Troubleshoot helps dealers resolve issues more quickly with less product downtime.

26

Demolition Remote Flash conveniently ensures Cat equipment operates with the most current version of on-board software, so the products deliver high performance, maximum efficiency and minimum downtime. This new Cat service enables remote updates to the software of a connected machine or engine, at a time convenient to the operation, without the need for a service technician to visit the jobsite. With Remote Flash, Cat customers receive notification from their Cat dealer, or in some instances, directly from

Caterpillar, when a new software update is available for a piece of equipment. Machines or engines can then be updated at the jobsite without waiting for a dealer technician to arrive and install the update. This ensures the benefits of the software updates are realised as soon as it’s convenient for the customer. Once a customer receives the flash-file push notification for a targeted product, the authorised user simply confirms the machine or engine is ready to begin the flash, initiates the process and confirms the postflash performance.

28

Currently Cat Remote Troubleshoot is available on Next Gen excavators, and Cat Remote Flash is available on Next Gen and 336F XE hydraulic excavators, M3 Series motor graders, L and M Series medium wheel loaders from the 950M to the 972 XE models, and 10 models of Oil and Gas engines. The new Remote Troubleshoot and Remote Flash work for Cat machines or engines with an on-board PLE641 or PLE742 card and telematics 2017B software or newer. More equipment will be eligible for the Remote Services offerings with future updates.

The performance of the Liebherr R 946 has been second to none ‘We ha ve it a co made policy mpany that al l ne machi nes fro w 30 ton nes up m wards will we a r the Liebhe rr bad ge.’

The R 946 is designed for minimal downtime and greater profitability. “We bought our first Liebherr, an R 954 crawler excavator, back in 2007 and over the past 11 years have used it on a wide range of projects. The machine’s performance has been second to none: it has stood up to everything we could possibly throw at it. With minimal repairs it is still going strong, which is why we have purchased another Liebherr: the R 946 crawler excavator with straight boom. After running the R 946 for a trouble-free 12 months, we have made it a company policy that all new machines from 30 tonnes upwards will wear the Liebherr badge.” Howard Stott, Howard Stott Demolition Ltd.
