I accept all the sensible arguments against the construction of HS2. It will be phenomenally expensive. It will grub up many acres of the green and pleasant land. It will require compulsory purchase orders on hundreds of homes and business premises. But, ultimately, HS2 is for the greater good of the nation. And while opposition politicians, the national media (and, most disappointingly of all, the construction trade media) focuses upon the billions of pounds the project will cost, they each overlook one vital point. It should not be about how much HS2 COSTS the UK; it should be about how much it will SAVE the UK.

To question the efficacy of the project now jeopardises around 9,000 construction jobs. Any moves to cancel the project now will waste the enormous amount of work that has already been conducted on the project; and it will condemn future generations to a degree of transportation gridlock the likes of which we have never seen.

Perhaps worse than all of that, however, is that its cancellation would signal the fact that Great Britain has surrendered its ambition: an ambition that allowed a small island nation to rule a global empire; an ambition that created the train and the railway; an ambition that allowed us to construct an ambitious rail link between the UK and France that travels under the sea.

Such a lack of ambition is unbecoming of the UK; and it is unbecoming of a nation that wishes to be considered among the global elite. Any political capitulation now will echo down the coming decades. Future generations will curse our lack of ambition and foresight as they sit trapped in their cars for hour after endless hour as they travel to and from work. Cancellation of HS2 would be emblematic of a nation in decline; a country in which political expediency is considered more important than the needs of its people.

The Appliance of Science The Sword of Damocles has been swinging above the head of the mammoth HS2 project, seemingly, since the outset. But that has not prevented Eiffage Kier, Blackwell and Finning UK from joining forces on a project that sets a new benchmark for civil engineering monitoring and control. Diggers & Dozers reports. High Speed Two (HS2) is a divisive project. To some, it is an ill-conceived and overly expensive contract, the cost of which could be better used elsewhere. To others, it is the long-awaited backbone of Britain’s transport network; a project that might finally bring to fruition Government plans for a “Northern Powerhouse”. Preservationists believe the project will have a significant and negative impact upon the environment, while others point out that it will actually alleviate pollution in the long-term by providing an alternative to gas-guzzling road transport. For some, it is an object of legacy; a valuable heir-loom to bequeath to future generations. For others, it is a political football to be kicked about for short-term personal and political gain. But thanks to joint venture contractor Eiffage Kier, Caterpillar dealer Finning UK, and muckshifting experts Blackwell, Diggers & Dozers was afforded a glimpse behind the curtain to see the inner workings of the project. And, regardless of your economic, environmental or political views, I am here to tell you that the project is set already a civil engineering marvel; a giant leap for construction project management and control. It is the project for which BIM (Building Information Management) was invented.

Truly Massive

The scale of the task facing Eiffage Kier and the various other contractors involved in the HS2 project harks back to a bygone age; an age when the UK was building its motorway network and when scrapers and push-dozers held sway. The Eiffage Kier portion of works will require the excavation of 32 m3 million together with the construction of 17 viaducts, 7.0 km of green tunnels, 22 km of road diversions, and 75 overbridges. The joint venture company’s earthworks vision is to use project data in a new way to share, innovate, communicate, measure and improve. The earthworks approach is to move material once, to move it the shortest distance possible, utilising the minimum amount of resource to do so and maximising the re-use of excavated material. This is part of a strategic investment project to understand how the ground might change when material is moved on a typical stretch of the planned HS2 route. Typically, heave is caused by the expansion of the ground as load is taken off, as it is when excavation occurs. It is most commonly associated with clay soils, which swell when they get wet. The level of heave will vary across a site and over time dependent on the type of ground and the depth of excavation. During the construction of the first railway networks in the 19th century, the lines were constructed following the natural curves of the landscape. Modern high speed trains travel at around four times the speed of Victorian trains, so they require a flatter, straighter track, passing over, under and through the natural landscape. In order to achieve an acceptable grade, it is necessary to strike a balance between the depth of the excavated cuttings and the height of the embankments. Understanding the way the ground will behave in deep cuttings, as material is excavated, is critical to delivering the right level of robust design and engineering to meet the technical requirements of the new line.

DIGGER Platform

In order to relate the heave data to the actual works on site, Eiffage Kier has collaborated with Finning UK & Ireland, Trimble and the Trimble dealer SITECH UK & Ireland and earthworks contractor Blackwell, to develop and test a new earthworks solution. A key part of this solution is the “Digital Graphical Earthworks Reporting” system – If you squint really hard, you might just about understand why this has been blessed with the acronym DIGGER. From the outset, Eiffage Kier and Finning have worked together in the trial, testing

Kier. And all of this has coalesced within an experimental but live portion of the project near Southam known as the “Heave Monitoring Site”. Eiffage Kier reports that this programme hinges on transformation by adoption of game-changing technologies and ways of working in earthworks that will benefits future stages of HS2 and the industry as a whole. The solution supports easy sign on by users across multiple systems, allowing access to the right information, at the right time, tailored to the right audience. All of the data collected by the DIGGER system is relayed to what is known internally as “The Single Source of Truth” which sounds like a lesser known Harry Potter novel but is, in fact, an overarching BIM system. Together with the DIGGER platform, the Single Source of Truth monitors mass haul activity in real time; provides a “single pane of glass dashboard reporting for ease of reference; automatically generates alerts when operational parameters

fall outside of acceptable norms; and manages resources including asset monitoring, people development and fleet management.

Watching Brief

All of this advanced technology has been applied to the ongoing monitoring of the core Blackwell earthmoving fleet on the site. This includes eight ADTs (six Cat 745’s and a pair of Volvo A45Gs) each fitted with GPS and payload monitoring technology, to ensure payload compliance and allow for cycle time measurement. Also monitored are two Cat 352F LME mass excavation spec excavators equipped with 3.6 m3 capacity buckets; two Cat D6T LGP dozers, fitted with the latest GPS enabled 3D Trimble Earthworks solution, supporting millimetre grade accuracy against the design target grade; a Cat CS76B Compactor with Trimble compaction control system; a Cat 16M motor grader for haul road maintenance; two Cat 320’s with Trimble Earthworks, used for final trimming works and digging

drainage ditches around stockpiles and the main cutting. These machines are also used for lifting the concrete ground sensor protection rings into position. Also on site is a Trimble Siteworks enabled 4x4 site vehicle, enabling 3D site monitoring from the vehicle. With hundreds of pieces of plant set to be used on each of the Eiffage Kier HS2 sections, Finning designed the digital earthworks solution to be compatible with data outputs from a full range of OEM equipment. Part of the development of the digital earthworks solution, which uses the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, was to look at all of the available technologies that could fulfil Eiffage Kier’s needs. One such example was the need to tag each load removed from the cut and to understand where it was then placed in the stockpiles. This is particularly important for the wider project when it comes to the traceability of any contaminated soils that need to be either

remediated on or offsite. In order to do this, Finning adopted the Trimble LOADRITE solution, which uses an in-cab touch button control to identify the type of material the operator is loading. This data is then matched with the GPS location of the truck being loaded. The load is then followed along the haul road until the material is dumped, obtaining a location reference for each load. With each truck and excavator also having on-board payload monitoring, the exact volume of earth moved is calculated automatically.

3D insight

The whole of the Eiffage Kier Heave Monitoring site has been modelled in 3D, using Trimble Business Center software supported by Trimble’s TILOS platform and Stratus Drone surveying platform as well as Trimble’s site positioning systems. This single model feeds directly into the digital earthworks tool and is used to provide all the information required by the machine-controlled excavators and dozers on site. The two-way

communication between machines and the model is done through GPS using the cloud-based Trimble Connected Community. This gives Eiffage Kier and Blackwell ‘as built’ data at the end of each day. To support the digital visualisation and mapping of the project, Finning are also conducting weekly drone flights, collecting point cloud data to 30 mm survey accuracy for the site model, with photography also supporting its progress timeline and traditional surveying practices integral to Eiffage Kier and Blackwells operational plan. For the first time in the earthworks sector, data from machines, models and drones is being combined with localised weather reports and a ‘delay register’ (a real world ‘what happened on site today’ reporting solution). By combining this data, Eiffage Kier can enrich its insights, allowing the team to spot trends and plan for delays with forward weather condition monitoring.

The new delay register function will also immediately flag up why delays or targets changed day by day, allowing site managers to log any relevant information, like ill staff or machine breakdowns, that impact performance. There is no question that the HS2 project is controversial. It is difficult to justify the enormous (and growing) cost of bringing this important infrastructure project to fruition. However, this is a project not for today but for the future; and that future is being realised by advances in technology that will benefit the civil engineering and construction sector almost as much as HS2 will ultimately benefit the nation. The construction industry often talks about “pushing the envelope”. But the work currently being undertaken by Eiffage Kier, Blackwell and Finning UK really does push the envelope. And it is using a pair of GPS-enabled Cat D6T LGP dozers to do the pushing.

Terex in South Africa South Africa is the secondlargest economy in Africa. With its busy project pipeline and a big mining industry, Terex Trucks is strengthening its presence in this key market and reinforcing its commitment to customers to deliver reliable articulated haulers that get the job done. With the South African government prioritising infrastructure development, there is a lot going on in the country’s construction industry. The re-election of the African National Congress party in May is expected to bring stability and revive Africa’s most industrialised country following the economic slowdown. This has also affected the construction industry, which contracted by 1.2% in 2018. Experts believe that the government’s efforts to enhance transport, residential and industrial infrastructure through the establishment of a fund of over £21 billion will support the growth of the construction industry over the next few years. The total construction project pipeline in South Africa, including all mega projects, stands at £154 billion. With this boost, the country’s construction industry is

set to emerge from recession and grow by 2.4% in 2019. China, one of South Africa’s largest trading partners, has also pledged to invest £1.7 billion in the country over the next few years. Terex Trucks’ two articulated haulers – the 28 tonne TA300 and the 38 tonne TA400 – are a popular choice among mining companies throughout South Africa, which mainly use the machines for coal mining. The country’s mining industry has historically been a driving force for South Africa’s development, and although investment in the industry has declined, it is still a big market – contributing £18.8 billion to the country’s gross domestic product in 2018.

Towards the end of 2018, the TA300 was upgraded and it’s now manufactured with the latest EP320 transmission. The updated machine delivers a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency, a 5 km/h increase in speed to 55 km/h, an extended maintenance period and enhanced performance when compared with the previous model. All of this means that customers can be more productive, achieving faster cycle times, lower cost per tonne and reduced carbon emissions.

Highlander High Track S Richardson Contracting Limited, based in Langholm in Dumfriesshire in Scotland, has purchased eight new Doosan DX160LC-5 HT 16 tonne High Track Crawler Excavators for work on the company’s forestry contracts throughout Scotland and North England. The new Doosan High Track Excavators were supplied by James Gordon Ltd (Gordons), the Authorised Dealer for the Doosan Heavy range in the South West and Borders regions, as well as the central-belt of Scotland as far as Argyle and Bute and the county of Cumbria in Northern England. “We were introduced to the Doosan DX160LC-5 HT High Track Excavators by Darren Nicholson, Sales Manager

Cumbria & Borders for Gordons Construction Equipment,” says Company owner, Simon Richardson. “The Doosan High Track excavators are well built, fit-for-purpose machines that have provided us with many advantages in the forestry work we do from preparing ground and mounding work to drainage and building forestry roads,” says Richardson. The Doosan High Track design allows us to easily negotiate tree stumps and other obstacles in forests, traversing sites much more easily and not having to move/remove the amount of material we had to in the past.” The DX160LC-5 HT excavator combines the upper structure from Doosan’s

DX140LC-5 14 tonne model with a heavier-duty 18 tonne class high track undercarriage, increasing the ground clearance from 410 mm in the DX140LC-5 to an impressive 615 mm. In its standard configuration, the digging depth of the DX160LC-5 HT is 5355 mm, the digging height is 8940 mm and the digging reach is 8080 mm. “Unlike our previous excavators which were specially modified, the Doosan DX160LC-5 HTs are purpose built machines for the forestry and rough terrain work we undertake. We initially tried out a DX160LC-5 HT from Gordons and it performed really well and our operators liked the machine. So it was an easy decision to purchase more of them, particularly when they are part of the excellent package offered by Gordons combining reliable service and maintenance with their fast response.” S Richardson Contracting employs a team of highly skilled machine operators with great experience in the forestry industry. The company has been in the business since 2003 and has worked all over the Scottish mainland and islands making ground ready for tree planting. Opening new land for planting trees is not easy but thanks to a strong fleet of equipment including the Doosan excavators, S Richardson Contracting can take on any job anywhere. Doosan also offers the larger DX180LC-5 HT High Track model, which is an enhanced version of the company’s DX180LC-5 excavator, incorporating a reinforced structure and a carefully reengineered, high performance braking system, offering the same ground clearance of 615 mm as the DX160LC-5 HT, compared to 460 mm in the standard DX180LC-5. The Doosan High Track models are designed to meet the needs of customers requiring a combination of higher ground clearance, a reinforced track frame and a strong traction system with reinforced upper rollers for work

in harsh environments and on projects where larger travelling distances are involved. The High Track models are particularly suited for constructing roadways, mounding, earthmoving and other duties in the forestry industry, where the higher ground clearance, durable travelling system and the traction force allow them to move with ease over rough terrain, negotiate obstacles such as fallen tree trunks and to pull trailers loaded with wood. The DX160LC-5 HT and DX180LC-5 HT are powered by the Perkins 1204F engine, which combines reduced fuel consumption with the power and torque of larger engines with a smaller displacement. The Perkins 1204F engine provides an output of 81.6 kW (109 HP) and 94.9 kW (127 HP) at 2000 rpm, respectively, in the DX160LC-5 HT and DX180LC-5 HT. The features offered as standard in the operator’s cab in the DX160LC-5 HT and DX180LC-5 HT are among the best in the market. Already excelling in spaciousness and ergonomics, the cab

has been further refined for outstanding operator comfort and ease of operation. The cab offers super controllability with a novel system that enables attachments to be operated from either the joystick or a two-way pedal. Being able to switch control of the auxiliary lines between the joystick and the two-way pedal greatly lessens any discomfort that may be caused by extended or repetitive use of the joystick alone to control attachments (such as a mulcher or a breaker). It is also helpful when precision is required – as the operator can keep full control of the excavator via the joystick while using the two-way pedal for attachments. For additional convenience, the controls for the auxiliary lines on the joysticks have been repositioned, with the rotation and shear rollers positioned for left/right movement. The joysticks have also been shortened to reduce the effort required to operate them and an additional pedal for straight travel has now been installed on the left of the main travel pedals, a very useful feature when travelling straight over longer distances.

JCB Hydradig For Polymer Processing Plant Leading Irish manufacturer of uPVC building products, RE-KKUR, has introduced a JCB Hydradig 110W Wastemaster wheeled excavator at the in-house plastic recycling facility that it operates at its County Fermanagh site. RE-KKUR opened its new Polymer Processing Plant in 2018 to further improve the efficiency of its recycling processes. RE-KKUR’s in-house recycling capability enables the company to produce a high quality product that is made from 99 per cent postindustrial recycled PVC – giving it a distinct competitive advantage. Waste management companies deliver trailer loads of reclaimed uPVC that has been removed from homes, offices and

other buildings to RE-KKUR’s site each day. The plastic is deposited within a designated drop off zone before being transferred by the Hydradig to the processing facility. Here the uPVC is crushed and turned into ‘chips’ which are then used by RE-KKUR within its production units to manufacture a range of building products – most notably render beads employed by plasterers. Supplied by dealer, Dennison JCB, with a service and maintenance

Sharing is Caring equipment expected to lose up to 60 percent of its value to depreciation in just three years, this idle time is a wasted opportunity to offset depreciation and running costs and to add another revenue stream to construction businesses. New app startup Shareplant has launched and is set to disrupt the construction equipment and tool hire industry by allowing users to rent a wide range of idle construction equipment and tools directly from owners.

The start-up allows equipment owners to earn extra money and offset equipment running costs during downtime and gaps between jobs, while offering renters a seamless way to browse a wide range of available selfdrive or operated specialist equipment on a single app, with up-to-the-minute information about availability and without having to contact or search multiple providers. The first company in the UK to bring the sharing economy to construction plant and tool hire, Shareplant already hosts hundreds of pieces of equipment for hire on its online Rental Marketplace, covering locations including Birmingham, London, Newcastle, Manchester - and Shareplant’s home county of Cumbria. The service is available online as well as via an app, available for iPhone and Android devices. Plant owners can list their equipment for free on Shareplant, receive a free one-on-one consultation to learn how to get the most out of the service, and use Shareplant’s Rental Calculator to estimate the rental fees their idle equipment could fetch. On average, construction equipment is used for only 50 to 80 percent of its potential working time, meaning it remains idle for 30-60 hours every week (assuming 24/7 availability.) With

Alongside its rental marketplace, Shareplant has also launched Shareplant Toolbox, providing construction companies with a paperless suite of software tools to help easily manage multiple aspects of their construction business from desktop computer, tablet and smartphone. Shareplant Toolbox includes paperless tools to help manage time-booking, site safety, equipment inspections, maintenance and defects and workforce training and administration. Provided as a monthly subscription, Shareplant Toolbox allows easier management of plant hire as well as management of construction sites and projects, customer feedback and work package management - and can save users time and cost by streamlining their day-to-day operation. “There are incredible gains to be made in bringing innovation and the sharing economy to the construction and plant hire industry. with Mathew Davies and Philip Mangan to agree the final specification and the cost, we shook hands on the deal. It was approximately five months from the initial enquiry to delivering the machine to site.” ABLE UK is already familiar with the Hyundai brand having purchased a 43 tonne R430LC-9A model back in 2016. “That first Hyundai has proven to be an extremely reliable and robust machine,” Chris Jordan explains. “The company’s decision to choose Hyundai was largely influenced by the reliability of their older model. Securing the deal with ABLE for this machine was very important to Taylor & Braithwaite and Hyundai as a brand. ABLE purchased the very first HX900 L machine to land in the UK and the first sold in Europe. This is the largest Hyundai model working in the UK. As a result of this deal we have had several new enquiries for the new Hyundai model, and we are very proud to have been the first dealer to introduce this mighty machine to the UK. We are anticipating more orders in the near future.” ABLE UK is equally pleased with the purchase. “We are more than satisfied with our 90 tonne machine and we definitely look forward to continuing the collaboration,” concludes ABLE UK’s Philip Mangan. “The HX900L is performing well. Code Red The government is pressing ahead with a programme of continual emissions reduction within the construction industry, yet it is offering no recommendations for suitable substitutes for the red diesel currently used in a variety of nonroad mobile machinery. Rebecca Swann, Product Manager for Fuels and Services at Certas Energy looks at the alternatives. It is an uncomfortable truth that there is no single fuel solution to the air quality problem for the construction sector. Despite advocating the use of alternative fuels where it is convenient, safe and commercially acceptable to do so, an investigation by HM Treasury and DEFRA into the high volumes of red diesel being used for non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) goes no further in setting out confident recommendations to lower emissions. With so many solutions available in the new liquid energy mix yet no clear directive, where can construction businesses start to make quick wins that can propel them on the path towards a net-zero emission future?

Stumbling Block

The UK has set ambitious targets to reduce emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). As a result, businesses are under pressure to transition to cleaner technologies that can improve local air quality and minimise health impacts of emissions from construction sites. But in the case of NRMM, this is easier said than done. NRMM requires the sudden and powerful burst of energy that is delivered by the combustion of diesel. So it can be difficult to switch to other energy sources that can pack the same punch. While NRMM is subject to emission standards, many construction businesses

seek to prolong the operating life of their existing equipment due to the significant cost of upgrading to new machinery. This older ‘legacy’ equipment can produce higher levels of air pollutants due to less stringent standards when the product was manufactured. Yet to move all legacy NRMM to machinery that meets Stage V standards would be prohibitively expensive. A lack of infrastructure also means that construction businesses must be realistic when evaluating how they can most effectively power the transition to lower emissions on construction sites especially when it comes to electrification. In fact, many respondents to the recent consultation on NRMM believe that - at this time - no viable cleaner alternatives are available. This is simply not the case. The technologies do exist to tackle emissions from NRMM and improve local air quality immediately - without causing disruption or requiring investment in new machinery. At the same time, it must be acknowledged that low levels of uptake are first and foremost a commercial (not necessarily a technical) challenge. Without incentive, and while the tax rebate on red diesel remains so attractive, the case for investing in the majority of alternative technologies is a difficult one to build. As much as this is a challenge, it also represents a huge opportunity for wider uptake to have an immediate and tangible impact on air quality. It’s here that readily-available alternative liquid fuels are kickstarting construction on the path towards the ultimate zero-emissions end point.

Looking to the Future

No one can predict the future as technologies develop and evolve - but it’s clear that there is no utopian solution that completely satisfies all the criteria. A broad mix of energy sources will surely enable the most cost-effective and robust transformation path to a lowemission future - while driving towards all the strategies and government policy initiatives. The fact that the infrastructure and supply chain is strongly in place for liquid fuels means they can immediately fuel the transition for NRMM.

The Case for Change

The liquid fuels industry already has a strong track record in technological development, with many alternative fuels offering an immediate solution to the air quality problem without the need for additional investment. There are many liquid fuel technologies that are already being tested and trialled. These include gas to liquid (GTL), power to liquid, biomass to liquid, hydrothermal liquefaction and hydro-treated biofuel products. However, some of these technologies and developments remain unproven. In the case of GTL, part of the paraffinic family of fuels, the benefits have been proven for NRMM. This particular formulation is based on gasification chemistry and can achieve similar performance levels to diesel while reducing emissions of NOₓ, PM and carbon monoxide. With noted benefits including high energy density, ease of use and safe handling - supported by security of supply and approvals from many OEMs - GTL delivers an exceptionally strong value proposition.

on a project to facilitate the construction of the High Speed 2 (HS2) Railway. Morgan Sindall has adopted the fuel to power one of its sites at Heathrow, as well as its refurbishment of the Oldbury viaduct on the M5 - part of the company’s joint venture with Bam Nuttall and VolkerFitzpatrick.

It’s possible that the immediate option offered by alternative liquid fuels is being overlooked because of an overemphasis on the zero-emission end goal. Naturally, that is where we all want to be. But without embracing evolving enhancements in fuel technology, the truth is it will take us much longer to get there.

Shell GTL Fuel is also helping Jackson Civil Engineering to minimise the impact of its operations on the Environment Agency’s Perry Barr and Witton Flood Management Scheme. As well as reducing the company’s environmental impacts as a result of its biodegradability and lower emissions, GTL is creating a healthier working environment and lessening disruption to the local community by producing less odour, smoke and engine noise than conventional diesel.

KINSHOFER enjoys HAMMER time KINSHOFER impressed at the recent Bauma fair in Munich with 128 innovations and yet again exhibited a full-service manufacturer and supplier offering. This was especially evident with the new HAMMER series of hydraulic breakers, with their reputation for robustness, allied to a proven track record. The Italian manufacturer became part of the KINSHOFER Group in January 2019, completing a strong group product portfolio. The KSB breaker series caters for excavators with operating weights from 0.5 to 12 tonnes, while the KFX series is designed for larger excavators from 8.0 to 200 tonnes. Breakers within the KSB series benefit from a distinctive ‘monobloc’ design, manufactured in a single piece and without any tie rods – a feature that makes the structure extremely durable and resistant to leverage during operation.

The breakers all work with nitrogen inertial energy recovery – a gas that provides greater machine power and less stress on the excavator arm. Traditionally, breakers with nitrogen energy recovery require frequent recharges – but with a specially integrated sealing system, the KSB‘s charge-life can be increased by up to 300 percent. The series offers unrivalled stability in nitrogen pressure whilst remaining tolerant to back pressure. The KSB’s distinctive design creates a ‘tapered’ shape which ensures excellent visibility during operation, allowing the

Miller and Malcom Get Attached Miller UK has secured a major order from Malcolm Construction, a division of The Malcolm Group headquartered in Glasgow Scotland. The deal will see more than 30 Miller quick coupler and heavy duty excavator bucket attachments added to Malcolm Plant’s portfolio as part of their 2019 replacement programme for use with their range of brand new excavators (1.5 to 22 tonnes) from the beginning of August. Rockwheel Acquires Hartl Crusher German rotary cutter manufacturer Rokla GmbH, which operates under the Rockwheel brand, has announced its acquisition of Austrian crusher and screening bucket specialist Hartl Engineering & Marketing GmbH. The deal includes the use of the Hartl brand, inventory and intellectual property. No redundancies are expected as a result of this announcement, and the sale price is not being disclosed. The Hartl family’s Modular Solutions Division is not included in the deal. Hartl Engineering & Marketing GmbH was established in 2011, building on a long history of the Hartl family name in the crushing sector. Under Rokla ownership, Hartl will remain an agile, entrepreneurial, brand. Rokla will make available its considerable competences and add resources to allow Hartl Crusher to expand its market coverage and customer base.

Engcon is setting the benchmark for operator and on-site safety by focusing solely on supplying its innovative and ultra-modern Q-Safe (QS) quick hitches now as standard.

Engcon’s QS quick hitches and QSC locking system eliminates the potential of human error that can occur when attaching or detaching buckets and other tools and attachments. Because the bucket’s axles are independently detected by electronic sensors, swinging or half-connected buckets are not possible. Ground-pressure sensing further eliminates the possibility of operator error by requiring the attachment to be grounded before the hitch can be opened and it is also possible to disable the digger’s boom and slew functions when the hitch is in an unsafe state. As well as preventing operator error or misuse, the system also has boom-mounted audible and visible alarm to warn nearby operatives when attachments are being changed or the hitch is in an unsafe state.

The move by the tiltrotator manufacturer means the company will no longer offer the older, industry-standard S-type quick hitches in the sizes S45-S80, which date all the way back to the 1980s. The new QS quick hitches, which are backwardcompatible with the Scandinavian ‘S’ geometry will still pick up attachments using this standard but crucially will connect hydraulic and electrical power automatically from an excavator to its tools and attachments using EC-Oil and, because of the intelligent nature of the hitch and control system, are counted among the world’s safest hitches.

“This is part of our safety initiative and zero-tolerance for swinging or dropped buckets. Q-Safe is one of the safest hitches in the world, and using it to replace the old, much less safe S-type hitches is a natural step for us,” concludes Stig Engström. “Automatic quick hitches are now our standard, and thanks to their safety functions I can confidently declare we have the market’s safest, smartest quick hitch system.”

Cat Hits Tilt With the addition of the new TRS23 Tiltrotator System (TRS), Caterpillar Work Tools provides a full portfolio of TRS configurations for Cat wheel and track excavators with operating weights from 23 to 30 metric tons. The TRS23, featuring a fully integrated control system that enhances carrier versatility and attachment control, rotates 360 degrees in either direction and tilts up to 40 degrees left and right, allowing the machine to reach more work areas from a single position and to manoeuver around obstacles. The new TRS23 is available with pin-on and coupler interfaces for handling a range of grading and trenching buckets (with CW-, CWs-, or S-coupler tops and bottoms), and an available swivel can operate such work tools as compactors and grapples. An optional grapple module allows picking and placing material without changing work tools.

SecureLock™ ensures a positive tiltrotator connection to the carrier by using both hydraulic and mechanical locking mechanisms, as well as a sensor-based confirmation system with audible signals and visual in-cab indicators. Integral load holding valves are designed to maintain cylinder stability and to secure loads, even if lines are cut. Long term reliability and durability for the TRS23 result from the heavy duty bolted joint that secures the housing, rotator, and coupler as a unit. Tiredness Kills Regular readers of the Diggers & Dozers magazine will know that, earlier this year, I was at Caterpillar’s training and demonstration area in Malaga, Spain for a major international press launch of a number of new products including the new Cat 340 SB straight boom demolition excavator. As ever, Caterpillar was the consummate host. The equipment was impressive, the weather was warm and the hospitality was even warmer still. But for all that, my lasting memory of that trip was not of machines or of sardines in the sunshine but of the work Caterpillar is doing behind the scenes to combat the perennial but potentially deadly issue of operator fatigue, alertness, vigilance and distraction. This was an issue that was addressed by Mitch Cowart of the Caterpillar Safety Technology team.

Q

During your presentation, you highlighted a specific and tragic story that really highlighted the potential danger of operator fatigue. Could you recount that story for us?

A

There was a young haul truck driver who came to work at a

phosphate mine in North Carolina. He fell asleep during the pre-shift safety meeting, and none of his coworkers and supervisors said anything. They just let him sleep there in the chair during the meeting. When the meeting was over he woke up and got in his truck and went to work, like we’re trained to do. But later that morning he had a lapse in attention and vigilance and he actually had a minor incident where he brushed side mirrors with an oncoming haul truck, and neither one of them told anybody. Later that morning, the same operator had a major lapse in alertness and vigilance. He was literally asleep at the wheel and he drove over a light vehicle, a pickup truck that had a man inside. And it took more than three hours to get the man out of the pickup truck. They fired that haul truck driver for not being fit for duty. But all was not as it first seemed. This young man had been in the emergency room with his wife who had just miscarried their first baby. But he had been raised to grit his teeth, to get tough and play through the pain. And so that’s what he did. He adhered to those cultural norms that he had been taught, and it nearly cost him running over and nearly killing a man. So in 24 hours he nearly killed a man, he lost his baby and he lost his job. And that was tragic for everyone involved.

That company called Caterpillar Safety Services and we wound up working with them. And after learning that fatigue is natural, that company hired back that haul truck driver. And it sent a huge message to all the employees that the changes that were taking place at that company were really about their safety and not about any punitive actions.

Q

That’s a fascinating story. But Caterpillar’s focus on operator fatigue stretches back way further than that. When did the company start to focus on this area?

A

I’m really proud to be part of this team that really started with a gentleman here at Caterpillar, his name is Dr David Edwards. He has his PhD in Human Factors, and he’s been working at improving the safety of our equipment and the safety of our customers’ employees for decades. Way back in 2005, he had a mobile electroencephalogram mounted on a motor grader, trying to understand their alertness, attention and vigilance by measuring their brainwaves. That work has continued to evolve and gain momentum here at Caterpillar to the point that now we have an entire group and a whole suite of technologyenabled safety solutions.

Q

Why is Caterpillar so focused upon this area of research and development?

A

Research has proven that around 90 percent of workplace injuries and incidents aren’t caused by conditions or environment or equipment failures. What that means is that somebody made a decision to engage in a behaviour that was risky. And most often that occurs because the person believes, or has the attitude or the value or the ideal that something else has a higher priority than workplace safety. So either productivity or costs or just some kind of time saving is really the higher priority. And so they take a chance and that’s really what drives workplace injuries. When everybody else on the team believes that same thing, that something else is more important than safety, then that creates this reinforcing feedback loop that we call culture; a dynamic social structure that selforganises around different attitudes and values including status - I’m the fastest or I’m the strongest or the most competent. The other attractor of this self-organising system is belonging and wanting to be part of the team, be part of the crew. When the rest of the crew shares these values of shortcuts and risk-taking, then that’s what we all wind up doing. And so the real challenge in any safety programme is to create a discipline around language, around

culture and those sort of organic drivers that are informing people’s behaviours as a result of their beliefs and attitudes and values, which are most often conveyed by language and the way we talk about these things.

Q

So what technology has Caterpillar developed and harnessed to address these issues?

A

In 2008, Dr Edwards was a coauthor on an industry-wide white paper that was sponsored by Caterpillar and BHP Billiton. And it was all about the different technologies that were emerging to help address fatigue risk in mining. Eventually, that evolved into to a suite of technologies called the Cat®MineStar™ Detect Suite. One component of that suite of technologies is the Driver Safety System. The Driver-Safety System is really an operator alertness, attention and vigilance optimisation system. It uses an optical sensor, what the layperson might call a camera, that’s mounted on the dash. That camera is pointed at the operator’s head and it uses some very sophisticated software to build a digital framework of the operator’s head and face, allowing it to measure head orientation, whether their head is drooping down or falling back or moving side to side, their facial expressions and different micro-expressions. We have many, many muscles in our face that can make very subtle facial expressions.

And this software reads those facial expressions to determine when an operator is fatigued, is suffering from some type of micro-sleep or whether they’re distracted. Another component in The Detect Suite is a technology we call Proximity Awareness. It uses a Global Navigation Satellite System to create a peer-topeer network and some on-board information systems that, again, push notifications and information to the operator so that he or she can make informed decisions in real time. And we are not finished yet. We are already beginning to test collision avoidance systems that will actually intervene when operators suffer a lapse in attention, vigilance or situational awareness while in close proximity to other machines. It will actually put on the brakes or stop the machine to avoid a collision.

Q

The fact that Caterpillar is having to develop these systems speaks to a wider issue though, doesn’t it. Isn’t it true to say that many workers in demolition, construction and a variety of other industry sectors are chronically sleep-deprived?

A

I found a study recently by Harvard University, one of the leading universities here in the US, and McKinsey & Company, which is a global business consulting firm. They collaborated on a study which discovered that sleep deprivation and prolonged work cycles, such as 24-hour shift schedules, were continuously challenging the basic biological capacity of workers. And they actually calculated that insomnia, or some form of sleep loss, was costing the average worker about 11 days per year in lost productivity. This study estimated that this lost time is costing companies about $2,300 per person per year, and that collectively we’re losing about $63 billion a year due to chronic sleep deprivation. Because this issue has been historically underestimated, it has posed an invisible threat. And so, Caterpillar has really committed resources to addressing this problem on behalf of our customers. The human brain has a very unique filtration system. All the other organs in our body are filtered by the lymphatic system which functions throughout the day for most healthy people. But

our brain has a special filtration system called the glymphatic system. It’s really a hydraulic system, meaning that it uses fluid to flush out toxins. It’s very hard to push water uphill, so it really works best when we’re laying horizontal as we do typically when we sleep. And, not only does the glymphatic system work best when we’re lying down, but also when we’re in our specific phases of sleep. So if you don’t get enough sleep, and especially not enough time in that 3rd phase of sleep, then you have toxins building up in your brain. And another way to say that is you’re effectively intoxicated. And coincidentally, if you don’t sleep within every 20 hours, by the 20th hour your mental function is equivalent to someone who has a 0.08 blood alcohol concentration or is legally drunk here in the US. When you learn that around 30 percent of a Cat machine’s productivity is related directly to operator performance, you can see how important the operator’s cognitive performance becomes. Ruttle Commits to CASE CASE Construction Equipment dealer Dennis Barnfield Ltd has completed the sale of 12 excavators to Ruttle Plant Hire. This represents Ruttle’s third order of multiple CASE excavators in the last year, the latest of which is destined for the company’s general fleet of machines. “The quality and reliability of our existing CASE fleet was the driver behind our decision to purchase these 12 excavators,” states Gareth Ruttle, Director, Ruttle Plant Hire. “We operate a large fleet of premium machines, all under two-years old, and due to positive feedback from customers

and operators we are beginning to invest more heavily in CASE machines. We know that these new machines will deliver the level of performance, efficiency and reliability that we’ve come to expect from CASE,” he goes on to say. “This large order was handled seamlessly by Dennis Barnfield Ltd. and

Volvo Triple for Skene Group Skene Group Construction Services Ltd of Glenrothes Fife has added three more Volvo L220H loading shovels to its fleet, with two going to work at its Soutra Mains quarry and the third taking up residency at the company’s Lomond quarry.

and large capacity 5.6m³ rehandling buckets, auto lube and boom suspension. The L220H which has been put in charge of similar duties at Lomond quarry has been equipped in the same fashion.

The 32 tonne L220H is powered by a 13 litre stage IV final engine developing

380hp in a relatively low rpm range of between 1300 and 1400 rpm and maximum torque achieved at just 1100 r/min. The machine’s full turn tipping load equipped with its rehandling bucket is a generous 22 tonnes and breakout force is measured at 229kN. Skene Group Construction Services has been operating L220H shovels at Soutra for the past five years and have lived up to the expectations of Joint Managing Director Darren Forrester with regards to productivity, machine uptime and fuel economy and savings. “The first L220H machine here at Soutra Mains replaced a smaller L180F to increase production and we considered the specification closely in order to achieve just a two bucket pass loading out eight wheeled lorries,” says Forrester. “We added a second L220H two years ago based on the strength of the reliability and productivity of the older unit machine and in total we now run four loading shovels at Soutra and have introduced another L220H at our Lomond facility to cope with ever increasing demands on our production output.” All of Skene’s existing fleet of Volvo branded equipment have been supplied with Volvo’s Blue service agreements which are based on a fixed rate per scheduled service and a fixed rate for mileage including oil sampling and regular inspections to be reviewed on an annual basis. These latest additions however, have been supplied with a Volvo Gold agreement which is a full repair and maintenance package whereby SMT GB takes charge of everything when it comes to scheduled maintenance, breakdowns and repairs. “The decision to outsource the complete maintenance and repair regime to SMT GB makes perfect sense in our opinion,” says Forrester. “Having them looking after the equipment with their own trained engineers using genuine parts with the proper disposal of all used oils and materials gives us both peace of mind and a tight control on each machine’s life time cost.” The key features of the Volvo Gold service agreement give Skene maximum visibility and control of the total cost of ownership and enables them to analyse fleet performance and find potential fuel savings and areas where operator performance can be improved through the use of Insight reports.

Barcelona’s New Striker With the history of Thwaites and the emergence and meteoric rise of JCB, it is all too easy to think of the site dumper as a British invention and institution. But plant hirers and operators ignore Spanish manufacturer Ausa at their peril. And with the introduction of the new DR1001AHG - a model that can switch from traditional site dumper configuration with the load in front of the operator to mini ADT configuration with the load behind – Ausa may have just produced the most impressive thing to come out of Barcelona since Andres Iniesta. The machine has a 10 tonne payload and features a hydrostatic transmission. But what marks the DR1001AHG as special is what the manufacturer describes as “bidirectional driving”. This is achieved easily through its reversible driving position, which can be changed quickly and automatically without the need to turn the engine off. The new model also features the convenient Hill Holder system, which engages the brake automatically when the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator pedal at a speed close to zero. Thanks to this, the dumper can stop on any slope easily and safely, allowing the operator to operate the unit and concentrate on handling the load. Based on the design of its successful D601AHG, which featured an innovative design and excellent electronic management, the new DR1001AHG also uses an advanced digital display, which shows all vehicle information in real time: speed, RPM, engine temperature, sensors, hour meter, etc., as well as any incident alarm. The operator can interact with the system easily by using the cab joystick buttons. It also features different automatic driving modes for improved fuel efficiency and optimal engine performance at all times. Firstly, the ECO Mode system, which automatically regulates the engine’s RPM for greater efficiency and lower consumption. The Transport Mode is activated when the machine requires higher speeds, allowing you to harness all of the power of the machine to increase its speed during journeys. Finally, the SmartStop option turns off the engine when the machine is not being used and the optimum engine cooling conditions are met. This helps reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Bright Sparks JCB has made manufacturing history by going into full production with the construction industry’s first fully electric mini excavator – with more than 50 machines already delivered.

The 19C-1E models - JCB’s first-ever electric diggers - are now coming off the assembly line at JCB Compact Products in Cheadle, Staffordshire, with orders rolling in from customers from across Europe and North America. The machine is a staggering five times quieter than its diesel counterpart and can be fully charged in under two hours. The model is expected to be a big hit with companies working inside buildings and in emissions and noisesensitive inner-city areas. Fully charged, the 19C-1E can put in a typical full day’s shift for a mini excavator. The 19C-1E will also offer customers great cost-of-ownership benefits, with research highlighting that over the first five years, charging costs will be 50 per cent cheaper for customers who would otherwise be using red diesel. Servicing costs are also expected to be up to 70 per cent lower compared to the diesel model. “In urban environments in particular, contractors are understandably very keen to operate zero emissions equipment whenever possible, including outdoors,” says JCB Chief Innovation Officer Tim Burnhope. “I’m delighted that the model is now in full

production after successful feedback from customers in many key markets during the evaluation stage.” Meanwhile, the Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street has hailed JCB as an innovative ‘world leader’ in engineering as it goes into full production with its first electric digger. The Mayor took the controls of the zero emissions digger at Birmingham’s biggest construction site, Perry Barr Residential Scheme. “The Midlands has a proud engineering pedigree and, with the launch of the construction industry’s first fully electric mini excavator, JCB is quite literally demonstrating the spark of imagination that makes it a world leader. Bell Rings Changes

Continuing a relationship that’s been in place since 2003, established plant operator Earthline has secured the purchase of two additional L2106 wheel loaders, and a further B30E articulated dumpruck, expanding the Bell Equipment element of its fleet to 16 machines. As one of the largest independent earthmoving, recycling and quarrying companies in the south of England, Earthline has steadily built its extensive fleet of 120 plant vehicles over 30 years, and with it developed a reputation for supplying clients with machines that perform consistently within extremely challenging environments. With B30Es and L2106 wheel loaders already operating as part of the Earthline taskforce, Philip Coplestone, the company’s director, knows exactly what to expect from his recent order: “Our experience of both Bell Equipment models has been extremely positive, which is why we’ve no hesitation in returning to Bell for these latest machines. Doubling Working on a number of major infrastructure projects across Ireland, operator Richard Collins knows more than most the importance of flexibility in excavation work. It was this need to drive even greater productivity that first led the Collins Plant Hire and Groundworks Services man to invest in a tiltrotator. Having initially trialled another manufacturer’s tiltrotator on his Hyundai HW140, Collins was looking for a unit that would deliver even greater cost and operational efficiencies. The solution came in the shape of a n Engcon EC219 model. “My work is predominantly focused on infrastructure upgrades, such

as roadworks and large-scale civil engineering projects. As such, a lot of the work I do takes place in incredibly confined spaces, like the sidings of busy motorways for example, so I need my excavator to be as flexible and responsive as possible. “I’ve been aware of the benefits of tiltrotators for some time, but Engcon is the first manufacturer to supply me with a unit that enables me to really explore their full potential. The tiltrotator also has DC2 controls, Engcon’s highly-efficient proportional control system, and integrated ePS, enabling Richard to see the exact excavation area via the machine control system’s display in the cab.

The Bobcat Sand Cleaner ideal partner in this perfect solution – in terms of both productivity and cost efficiency. “When we delivered the machine, various other interested companies came to see it at work,” says Luigi Colucci, owner of F.lli Colucci D&A. “The machine also created considerable curiosity and interest at neighbouring resorts, which were quick to see its potential. By efficiently removing waste and debris of all sizes on a beautiful and very popular beach in Italy’s Puglia region, the Bobcat SC200 Sand Cleaner attachment has shown it can be a powerful weapon against the threat posed by plastic and other waste in seas and on beaches around the world. The world’s beaches and marine environments are plagued by a wide range of waste items including plastic in all forms from bottles, plastic bags and food containers to microparticles. In Europe, around 80% of beaches suffer from waste, according to a European Commission report published in 2016. The Sand Cleaner attachment working in Italy was purchased by Baia degli Aranci, a prestigious Puglia tourist resort in Vieste (Foggia), which includes a large beach spanning over one hectare of fine sand, beside a crystal-clear sea loved by tourists from all around the world. Able to cover vast areas with a reach of up to 15,000 sqm per hour, the Bobcat Sand Cleaner quickly sieves sand and collects even the smallest waste, such as cigarette butts, bottle caps, pieces of glass, splinters of wood, tins, stones, plastic bags, syringes and algae, the most common type of waste on European beaches.

The collected waste is then stored in its 350 l integrated collecting bucket and can be directly unloaded onto a truck or into a container thanks to the hydraulic opening system of the bucket and the lift arms of the compact loader on which the attachment is mounted. It is a highly effective sand cleaning tool with a cleaning depth adjustable down to 20 cm, interchangeable sieves with four mesh sizes and a rear blade for optimum finishing. Highly satisfied, the resort has added other attachments since, such as a root grapple for picking up bulkier items, a fork for preparing and clearing the site, a bucket for sand handling and a mixer bucket for maintenance and building works at the resort. The Bobcat T650 also ensures outstanding stability, without the risk of sinking into the sand/ground, and its compact size and excellent manoeuvrability allow us to use it even between the umbrellas on the beach.” In the past, cleaning at Baia degli Aranci was performed by local staff using a small sand cleaning machine with very low performance characteristics. Cleaning reached a depth of just 3 cm and was undone with the first gust of wind. Another important benefit of the Bobcat Sand Cleaner is that it is frontmounted, so the operator can monitor the work being performed and the waste accumulating in the bucket. “Our previous machines were towed by tractors, forcing the operator to continuously turn back to check his work,” adds Di Palma. “And the tractor’s wheels would inevitably grind the waste into the ground before the towed tool could reach it.”
