Show & Tell The end of the year is fast approaching; a fact that leaves us with two choices. We can either look back and reminisce about the year that has been; or we can look ahead to the chapter yet unwritten. Well, there is precious little we can do about the year just gone so let’s look ahead instead. 2019 promises to be a truly momentous year for the construction equipment sector as the planets align and the world’s biggest triannual show coincides with the UK’s largest biennial show and the UK’s only dedicated demolition equipment show too. Unshackled by the need to meet tightening engine emissions regulations – at least for now while EU Stage V legislation lurks on the horizon – equipment manufacturers have already been beavering away in the background, introducing improved, enhanced and upgraded equipment throughout the past 12 months. But a Bauma year is special. It is a week that comes around just every three years and – as sure as eggs is eggs – all of the world’s leading equipment manufacturers will arrive in Munich from 8 to 14 April 2019 with countless new and improved machines tucked conspicuously up their collective sleeves. Of course, not everyone can make the trek to Munich; and with hotel rooms doubling and even trebling in price for the duration of the Bauma show, it is a potentially expensive undertaking. But those that can’t or can’t afford the trip to Bavaria will get a second and – in some cases – a third bite at the big show cherry. If you can’t make it to Bauma, a good many of the new machines, attachments and systems shown in Germany will get an airing again at the PlantworX show that will take place at its new home – the East of England Arena – on 11, 12 and 13 June 2019. And if you manage to miss that one too, and if demolition equipment is more your thing, you have a third opportunity to place your finger on the equipment industry pulse when the DemoExpo show takes place at the Hertfordshire Showground from 4 to 6 July 2019. Of course, Diggers and Dozers will be at all three shows and will be reporting – in word, picture and video formats – on each of them. But rather than waiting for us to cover them, put those dates in your new 2019 diary, pop along, look out for us, and be sure to say hi.

Teenager Blair Hughes has landed a dream job as a digger driver – and got straight behind the controls of a brand new excavator costing more than £100,000.
Ever since he was a young boy Blair Hughes, 17 has wanted to operate machines. Now his wish has come true after landing a job with the Glasgowbased Clearwater Group, operating a new generation JCB X-Series excavator, which has been launched to great acclaim following a £110 million investment. Blair joined Clearwater straight from school and the company supported him through CPCS operator courses for excavators, ADTs, wheeled excavators and forklifts. When the company became one of the first in Scotland to purchase the new JCB 220X model from dealer Scot JCB, Blair was given the responsibility of operating the machine. “I have always wanted to be a plant operator so I jumped at the chance to join Clearwater as soon as I left school,” says Blair. “As soon as I proved my ability and my work ethic, the leadership here and our customers were fantastic in allowing me the opportunity and responsibility to thrive.” “The JCB220X is the best machine I have driven, it is the smoothest, has the most power and the comfiest cab ever. If I was spending my own money on an excavator, this is what I would buy.”
5
DIGGERS & DOZERS
Blair has primarily been using the machine at a landfill site near Grangemouth where it is performing a variety of heavy excavation duties including loading articulated dump trucks for transporting soil across site. “Blair has followed my footsteps into the industry and I’m proud to see what he has achieved in such a short space of time,” says Blair’s father – Clearwater Contracts Manager Graeme Hughes. “It is testament to his skills and commitment that he has been welcomed and retained on site by customers at such an early stage of his career.”
“From the outset we were impressed with the look of the machine and it has not disappointed. Loading cycle times are significantly quicker than previous models and it is proving extremely reliable despite being worked hard. “We have a longstanding relationship with Scot JCB going back 20 years. The service and response are the best in the business and we have always found the equipment high performing and reliable. As a result of the performance of the new X Series machine we have already ordered another one,
6
along with a 175W HRC and a JCB 531-70 Loadall telescopic handler.” The brand new JCB 220X, 20-tonne tracked excavator model, launched earlier this year, has been designed to provide maximum operator comfort, durability and reliability in operation. Over a four-year development period, JCB has undertaken a programme of intensive component and product testing to achieve increased levels of build quality and reliability for customers in this advanced new machine.

Volvo Impress in Georgia
A fleet of Volvo EC210B crawler excavators is helping to erect power line towers in the high-altitude, mountainous terrain of southern Georgia. Georgian construction company Caucasenergo is currently engaged in a challenging project to construct power line towers in the most remote, mountainous regions of the country.
The high-voltage transmission towers are being erected 2,500m above sea level in Beshumi, a particularly rocky, hard-toreach region with very limited access to roads. This mean all Caucasenergo construction equipment is required to be extremely reliable and proficient in off-road mobility. Caucasenergo is therefore using a fleet of EC210B crawler excavators to carry out the work.
8
They have proven to be efficient, convenient and easy-to-operate machines that can be adapted to any application. “The Volvo EC210B excavators fully comply with the working conditions and are effective even in severe terrain conditions,” says Mandzhavidze Vakhtang, co-owner of Caucasenergo. “We began to cooperate with Volvo in 2014 and they have never disappointed us with their equipment offering.”
DIGGERS & DOZERS
The EC210B features a strengthened undercarriage frame; reinforced boom; solid superstructure with double welded corners; and greased, sealed track link to prevent leaks and guarantee long life. It also includes easy access, centralised lubrication points for simplified, ground level serviceability and greater uptime. “The Volvo machines are extremely reliable. They of course all require maintenance from
time to time. For this, we call Elite Motors, our Volvo dealer based in Tbilisi,” says Gabriadze Levan, project manager at Caucasenergo. “Whenever they are needed, they are always there the following working day – sometimes even at the weekend – to help us resolve the issue. This means our machines never stop for long, keeping project downtime to a minimum.” Working in such mountainous terrain, the machines need to
9
be reliable and comfortable. The EC210B’s large and comfortable cab features ergonomic controls, vibration dampening and electronic climate control for allday productivity. “I’ve been operating Volvo machines for one and a half years and I really like how comfortable, precise and responsive they are,” says Kalandadze Kakhaber, an excavator operator on-site. “I would recommend Volvo to all operators of construction equipment.”

Builders Bobcat C & AJ Marshall Builders Ltd, based in Leeds in West Yorkshire in the UK, has purchased a new compact Bobcat TL30.60 telehandler for housebuilding projects, to carry out lifting and loading work and for handling recycled construction, demolition and excavation materials to be reused on site.
The new TL30.60 is backed by the three year/3000 hour warranty that is standard for all models in the Bobcat rigid frame telehandler range. “We are very impressed with the new Bobcat telehandler,” says Ben Marshall, owner of C & AJ Marshall Builders. “It complements the larger telehandlers we also run on our sites which are designed
more for lifting rather loading. The new Bobcat TL30.60 is now a core component of the turnkey contracts we offer clients – covering everything from demolishing existing buildings, recycling as much as possible for use on site to building the new properties and handing them the keys at the end.” In the turnkey contracts available from C & AJ Marshall Builders,
10
debris from demolished properties is sorted and with the sand, stone and aggregates dug from the site is fed by the TL30.60 into a compact crusher screen, from where it is stockpiled by the telehandler for reuse on the site. The TL30.60 combines this with other work such as the unloading, moving and lifting of pallets of bricks and other building products from trucks visiting the sites.
DIGGERS & DOZERS
Powered by a Bobcat D34 Stage IV engine with an output of 74.5 kW (100 HP), the TL30.60 at C & AJ Marshall Builders offers more power and a higher maximum travel speed of 40 km/h. “We purchased the AGRI version of the TL30.60 telehandler, with a number of additional features providing higher comfort and productivity,” says Marshall. “The new Bobcat telehandler is fully road certified so that it can be driven quickly between sites to do different work. The boom suspension system is a really useful feature for travelling on the roads, keeping the boom stable and preventing it from bouncing over bumps.“ The Bobcat D34 Stage IV engine offers electronic fuel injection; High Pressure Common Rail technology; turbo-charged air management and Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation for lower emissions and does not require the use of Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) technology. Described by Bobcat as a compact productivity model, the TL30.60 provides a maximum lifting capacity of 3 tonne, a maximum lift height on its 24 inch tyres of 5.9 m and a maximum horizontal reach of over 3 m.
it with a number of attachments including opening/closing pallet forks, a 1.4 m3 rehandling bucket and a 0.8 m3 4-in-1 combination bucket.” As an AGRI version, the new TL30.60 telehandler also includes air conditioning; an automatic fan inverter; a Sears high comfort air suspension seat and premium cab finish (deluxe steering wheel, armrest, aluminium panels); a trailer brake valve and a drawbar coupler tow hitch. Like all new generation TL models from Bobcat, the TL30.60 offers several other higher comfort and productivity features, including Power Lift, an efficient lifting technology that optimises the use of hydraulic flows between telescopic boom cylinders to increase the lifting capacity; an automatic parking brake for enhanced safety and operator convenience and Boom Cushion Retract, that automatically slows down the boom speed when the boom is nearly fully retracted or at min/max angles, increasing safety and operator confidence.
“The telehandler provides good lifting capacity and lifting heights. It also meets our requirement for having a relatively small footprint, being able to work and move within the confined spaces on our sites. We get the most out of the Bobcat telehandler by using
11
The TL30.60 also offers a number of tried and tested smart operating features as standard – the SMS (Speed Management System), which allows the travel speed to be adjusted independently of the engine speed; the SHS (Smart Handling System), which allows the speed of the boom movements (lifting, telescoping and tilting) to be adjusted, depending on the type of work being carried out; AFM (Auxiliary Flow Management), which allows the hydraulic output to be adjusted to match attachment requirements and to set a continuous flow and the FCS (Fast Connect System), which provides quick and easy interchange of hydraulic attachments via an integrated pressure-release system. Another standard feature is the ECO mode, which maintains optimum hydraulic performance without using the engine’s full power, adjusting the main machine features to produce a balance between top performance and providing the best performance/fuel consumption ratio.
Naked Ambition
DIGGERS & DOZERS
Equipment manufacturer Hyundai is targeting a Top 5 position in the European market and has invested heavily to make this lofty ambition a reality. Mark Anthony reports from the company’s new European headquarters in Tessenderlo, Belgium.
There is a large part of the first floor of Hyundai’s relatively new 81,000 m2 European headquarters that sits silent and empty; strangely at odds with the busy 10,000 m2 equipment demonstration area located close by at which excavators track and slew and wheel loaders dart hither and thither. But a large empty office suite is not a sign of a company in decline. Rather, it is an indication of a company’s ambitions for growth and expansion. That office space is not presently required. But if the company achieves even a fraction of its lofty ambitions, it most certainly will be. Beyond Criticism A decade or so ago, construction and demolition equipment manufactured in South Korea was largely looked down upon. Perhaps unfairly, it was labelled as lower quality than the machines built by some of their European rivals. Questions were asked about equipment reliability, the availability of parts, the responsiveness of aftersales service, and residual values. By embracing technology, reducing engine emissions and laying to rest concerns over machine reliability, those Korean manufacturers have largely moved beyond such criticisms and it is now the turn of the Chinese manufacturers to have their quality called into question.
13
DIGGERS & DOZERS
Same as it ever was. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Japanese manufacturers were the target of similar criticism. Just a few decades on and the likes of Komatsu and Hitachi are seen not just as quality manufacturers but as recognised leaders in their chosen field. So when Hyundai states that it is aiming to be one of the construction equipment market’s Top 5, we dismiss such bold ambitions at our peril. Little to Choose Although equipment manufacturers will unquestionably tell you otherwise, there is very little to choose between most excavators on the market today. And for good reason. Many share the same or similar engines, transmissions and hydraulic system; some even originate from the same factory but are sold in different colours and with different badges. Often, the key differentiator – the things that mark a premium brand from a medium one is a matter of the bells and whistles; the little extras. Yet even those are remarkably common today. Most excavators above a certain size have air conditioning as standard. Most are offered with a variety of standard, comfort and fully adjustable seats. Some are offered with the peace of mind of telematics systems that monitor functions such as hours worked and fuel consumption, that identify faults before they evolve into costly downtime, that optimise service intervals and help minimise unplanned downtime. Caterpillar has all these things. Komatsu has all these things. So does Liebherr and JCB. And so does Hyundai. Indeed, sitting in one of its excavators, you could be
mistaken for thinking you were in what could be described as a “high-end” machine. Because you are. Here in the UK, these machines are sold and supported by reputable and longstanding dealers such as Molson and Ernest Doe; firms that don’t just move metal but which also have a reputation for being able to look after it once it’s sold too. Justifiable Confidence Hyundai recognises that it is at the beginning of a journey and that it has many obstacles and long-established objections and perceptions to overcome before it can truly take its position at the industry’s top table. But the whole company exudes a swagger and a confidence not normally associated with an organisation playing catchup with more established rivals. The new European headquarters represents a significant investment; the kind of investment companies only
14
make when they are certain of themselves. The dealers it has appointed speak to a desire for pre and post-sale credibility. And the build quality and constant evolution of the machines themselves show a company that has come a long way and yet which remains eager to improve. Perhaps the greatest example of the company’s current confidence is its willingness to throw open the doors of its European headquarters to dealers and customers alike. “At Hyundai Construction Equipment Europe, we believe the best way to feel the Hyundai effect is to meet with us and exchange experiences,” says Paul Sysmans, Marketing Manager Europe at HCEE. “Our intention is to offer our customers, prospects and dealers a total and unique company experience that goes beyond traditional trade shows. A vital part of the customer journey is the machine experience. The only way to

know how Hyundai equipment will perform at a jobsite is to put it at work.” For all its unquestionable confidence and ambition, Hyundai is under no illusions about the challenge ahead. If it is to be accepted as one of the industry’s Top 5 manufacturers, it will need to overtake some seriously good and wellestablished rivals. However, as I said previously, it is just a few years ago that the likes of Komatsu were being dismissed as enthusiastic upstarts. The path that lies ahead of Hyundai climbs steeply and is fraught with dangers. But it is a path that has been trodden before. And it would take a brave man to bet against it being trodden again.

Abad, covering a total area of approximately 45,000 m2. “The cleaning service was previously carried out by a small sand cleaning machine, about 30 years old and with very low performance, so we have improved service, productivity and profitability as well.” One of the advantages of the new Bobcat sand cleaner is that it can be used on both dry and wet surfaces. The sand on fluvial beaches has a different constitution to that found on maritime beaches. River beaches can also suffer from the presence of deep rooted undergrowth. This is normally removed from the sandy areas out of season. With the new Bobcat attachment, this work is now providing a yield four times higher than the equipment previously used and to a higher quality.
“The cleaning of all the sandy areas is now carried out over 8 to 10 days, depending on whether or not the sand is dry or wet, compared to the 30 to 40 days it needed in the past. The Bobcat loader package with the sand cleaner provides a solution that costs half as much as a dedicated sand cleaning machine for the same application. Cleaning with this implement is much cheaper thanks to the short cycles and high productivity of the Bobcat loader-sand cleaner combination,” says José Dias. With a working width of 1900 mm, a working depth of up to 200 mm and a bucket capacity of 350 l, the Bobcat sand cleaner is a high performance attachment which allows the loader operator to quickly sift sand/soil and collect debris and waste as small

as cigarette stubs. As well as cigarette stubs, the sand cleaner can also pick up other small debris such as bottle caps, broken glass, pieces of wood, cans, stones, rocks, plastic bags, syringes and seaweed. Capable of covering a large area at a rate of up to 15,000 m²/h, the high productivity offered by the Bobcat sand cleaner is complemented by the high discharge capability. This is provided by the lift arms on the loader and the hydraulic hopper gate on the attachment, allowing the debris to be easily dumped into a waiting truck. The SC200 sand cleaner is compatible with both the standard and high flow versions of the Bobcat T590, T650, T770 and T870 compact track loader models.

Ridgway Invests for the future Shropshire plant hire company, Ridgway Rentals Ltd., is making a £17.5 million investment in new machines to cope with current and future demand.
The huge shopping list of nearly 200 machines has been split between four manufacturers. Hydrema, JCB, Hitachi plus the lion’s share of £12 million going to Komatsu. The deal comprised of several excavators ranging from 13 up to 50 tonne including zero tail swing, long reach and high reach demolition models plus a number of 12 tonne articulated rear tip site dumpers, new 7 tonne high visibility dumpers, 1.5 to 8 tonne mini excavators plus intelligent excavators and dozers with GPS control. The majority of machines ordered are manufactured in the UK! British icon, JCB in their Uttoxeter plant and Komatsu’s UK plant in Chester-Le-Street, near Newcastle-Upon-Tyne where Komatsu produces its hydraulic excavators. World demand for construction equipment and the weak pound has meant that a large quantity of the UK’s used equipment has
28
been exported abroad, creating a shortage of equipment to rent – just as the construction industry begins to gain momentum! The orders were placed following a number of months of negotiation and have been arriving into Ridgway’s main depot near Oswestry in Shropshire in a steady stream, usually to go straight out on hire! Ridgway Rentals Ltd. is a family owned and run plant hire business that has its routes going back to the 60’s. Group Chairman, Tim Jones, is confident that this recent expansion of the fleet will enable the company to give its customers the equipment it needs “Our service is giving our customers what they want when they need it.” Stuart Jones, Managing Director explains that by having the right equipment when our customers need it means that they in turn increase productivity “All our new equipment is of the latest technology and include the latest emission control! Machines also comply with the latest Health and Safety legislation including all round vision for the operator via intelligent camera systems.” Stuart continues, “A number of the new Dozers and Excavators will also be equipped with lasercontrolled GPS technology, our job is ensuring that our customers have access to the latest technology so that they can be more productive and operate safely, damaging the environment as little as possible – you can only do this by having the latest equipment.”

Volvo Power Pipeline Productivity Equipping construction machines with a digital voice has brought a new level of productivity to an international energy project piping gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe. The project; TAP, is scheduled to cost 4.5 billion euros and covers 878 km both onshore and under the sea, from Greece to Italy. French-based international pipeline contractor SPIECAPAG is carrying out the onshore work of 187 km across Greece and 215 km through Albania. When complete, the pipeline will open up a huge new source of natural gas to markets across the whole of Europe. For a project of this size every second counts – and being able to avoid machine breakdowns is of vital importance. But TAP has been able to report zero engine failures on one sprawling stretch
of pipeline in Albania, partly thanks to the introduction of a suite of telematics on every Volvo machine operating across the region. Since September 2016, Proactive Monitoring has been active on all 91 of TAP’s new machines in Albania (eight EC300DL excavators, 57 EC380D/El excavators, 16 EC480D/ELs excavators and 10 A30F articulated haulers). Proactive Monitoring, an intelligent telematics system provided by Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) allows its machines to communicate with workers on and off site. It works behind the scenes to monitor all aspects of machine health, sift through thousands of
codes and alarms and highlight only the most relevant. “We have tremendous support from our Hub West Aftermarket Team, as well as our local dealers T&C and Saracakis,” says odrigo Konda, Director of Global Key Accounts at Volvo CE. “The combination of having local technicians on site, a stock of spare parts and the right training to cope with any challenge allows us to efficiently manage this large fleet. But Proactive Monitoring was the icing on the cake to make sure our local team was able to immediately investigate and pinpoint any problem. SPIECAPAG is impressed that we are able to spot and fix the problems so quickly and secure maximum uptime for their fleet.” “The ambition has always been to improve dealer efficiency,” says Abhijit Menon, Product Manager for the Proactive Monitoring Service. “Traditional monitoring systems risk information overload, making it almost impossible to work through all the monitoring signals and error codes – and spot the issues that really matter. Instead the dealer can now provide a complete one-stop-shop solution for data management.”

Centre of Europe Bobcat has announced the opening of a new distribution and spare parts centre for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in Halle, Germany. As a result of a multi-million euro investment and utilising the very latest in warehousing and sorting technology, the new centre will ensure the speedy delivery of spare parts and other components to dealers and customers throughout EMEA. Over time, the Bobcat dealer and customer bases in EMEA have grown rapidly, resulting in a significant increase in their needs and expectations. Currently, Bobcat has around 180 dealers in 75 EMEA countries. By investing in the new state-of-the-art facility in Halle, Bobcat will ensure the fastest service for the company’s dealers and their customers.
Located close to Leipzig Airport, the new 43,000 m2 Bobcat Aftermarket Service Centre covers an area equivalent to 14 full-sized football pitches. Over 150,000 different spare parts and components are stocked in the new centre. These are delivered from Bobcat factories (in USA and Europe) and certified suppliers from around the world and made available directly to dealers and their customers in EMEA. With a current fill rate of 95 percent, the new distribution centre has already exceeded the performance level planned for its start-up.
The centre is also responsible for supplying aftermarket products to the Parts Distribution Centre (PDC) in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The Dubai PDC supplies spare parts to Bobcat and Doosan Portable Power dealers in the Middle East and East Africa. In addition to the excellent connections provided by Leipzig Airport, the door-to-door proximity with the DHL main European delivery centre and the motorway network on its doorstep, Halle was chosen as the location for the new building because of the strategic importance of the German market for Bobcat. “With the high investment in the new distribution centre, we are also very clearly committed to EMEA as a region,” says Paulo Florindo, EMEA Aftermarket Senior Director, Doosan Bobcat EMEA. “The new centre will enable us to supply our customers even faster and more flexibly with everything they need. With 130 new jobs created, we are confident we will provide the best service.” Customers and dealers alike are impressed by the efficiency of the new spare parts centre. “We at Marep GmbH have been Bobcat dealers for over 10 years now and have most of the parts we need in our warehouse. Both were previewed at the Spring Sale in Kissimmee, Florida in February coordinated by top auctioneers Yoder & Frey and
34
proved to be the perfect event to develop brand awareness amongst prospective distributor representatives and buyers. As a direct result it has signed up a number of Barford Equipment distributers and the objective is to have one in each US state. Further afield several new distributors have also been signed up in in Australia to cover both Perth and Sydney. The European network is also undergoing expansion with new distributors being signed up in several of the key EU markets but others are still being actively sort particularly those with direct mining, aggregate, recycling and construction sector knowledge and experience.

A rotating agitator works to keep material flowing to the conveyor. Adjusting conveyor speed and door openings controls the volume of material discharged and the area covered. Features of the Cat Side Discharge Bucket suit this attachment for varied application, including agriculture, construction, landscaping, road maintenance, and material handling. The rubber conveyor belt—featuring a heavy duty, raised chevron tread design and equipped with an adjustable tensioning device—is engineered for long-term durability and functions efficiently whether discharging material left or right. Two externally mounted, reversible, hydraulic motors power the conveyor directly, eliminating any intermediate drive mechanisms. Specially designed openings in the bucket floor allow any material remaining in the bucket to escape, preventing material build-up beneath the conveyor. Side Discharge Buckets designed for consistent use in sand, or other heavier materials, feature an internal baffle to reduce belt strain. The agitator assembly, directly powered via a third, high-torque hydraulic motor, functions to reduce material bridging in the bucket to ensure consistent material flow to the conveyor. Agitator paddles are available in sand and sawdust configurations, the sand style featuring a straight design that exerts added force to push through dense material, and the sawdust type featuring an aggressive design that uses prongs to assist in breaking up material and reducing weight on the conveyor. The manually adjustable discharge doors, one on each side of the bucket, regulate the volume of material discharged. The doors are built with thick-plate reinforcing for durability. As an added safety feature for Cat Side Discharge Buckets, a welded, serrated step facilitates entering and exiting the cab.

Liebherr L580 XPower Rugged American lorries for bulk material transportation are pairing up with high-performance Liebherr equipment for the greywacke extraction process. Based in Germany’s Sauerland region in North RhineWestphalia, quarrying company Günter Jung GmbH operates a very special fleet of machinery, which boasts the L 580 XPower wheel loader as its latest addition. ‘We are glad to have chosen the XPower wheel loader from Liebherr,” says company owner Günter Jung. “It delivers loads of power while being efficient and reliable.”
The L 580 XPower is predominantly used in loadand-carry applications and feeds material into crushers and lorries. An eye-catcher in its own right, the wheel loader turns even more heads when it is loading one of the American lorries. Günter Jung GmbH specialises in the extraction and processing of greywacke. The quarrying firm produces bulk material of various quality grades for use
44
in industries such as specialpurpose civil engineering. The high-quality quarry stones, irregular paving slabs, decorative stones and rectangular stone blocks are used in both construction and landscaping. The L 580 XPower wheel loader plays a key role in the extraction and processing of these products in the quarry. It picks up blast material at the quarry face and transports it to the two crusher units. In this process,
DIGGERS & DOZERS
the machine travels a distance of about 100 metres with ease. With its power-split driveline, the approximately 28 tonne wheel loader has no difficulty in covering this distance, which includes an incline of around 15 metres in length. “I am completely amazed by the L 580’s XPower driveline. Our quarry area includes a steep ramp and the machine negotiates it with ease,” says Jung. Since its commissioning in June 2017, the Liebherr L 580 XPower has proved to be ideally suited to load-and-carry applications at Günter Jung GmbH. The rugged Z-bar linkage can exert high breakout forces in the lower region of the lift arm. This plays a vital role in picking
up blast greywacke using the 6.0 m3 rock bucket efficiently. During material transportation, the power-split driveline ensures a smooth ride and a high level of performance by automatically adapting to the current driving situation. As a result, the L 580 XPower contributes to boosting the quarry’s productivity. “The new Liebherr wheel loader allows us to handle 1,500 tonnes of greywacke on a daily basis. At the same time, its average diesel consumption of 12 litres per hour of operation is impressively low and helps us reduce our operating costs,” says Jung. For the Sauerland-based quarrying company, moderate fuel consumption figures coupled
with high levels of material handling performance were the main reasons for purchasing the L 580 XPower. Determined to find the best possible solution, Günter Jung meticulously tested several machine models from various manufacturers. “In direct comparison with other makes, it was the L 580 XPower by Liebherr that convinced me the most. The wheel loader is sturdily built and has a comfortable cab,” says Jung. He also values the close cooperation with Dortmundbased Liebherr-Baumaschinen Vertriebs- und Service GmbH, which has established itself as a reliable partner that provides invaluable support.

JCB Through and Through Coventry-based Tom White Waste (TWW) has added a further four JCB machines to the range of materials handling equipment (MHE) in operation at its recycling centre in Coventry. The new additions mean that TWW’s MHE fleet is now comprised entirely of JCB equipment. The latest order is made up of three JS20MH wheeled material handlers and a 560-80WM
Loadall – the most powerful unit in the JCB telehandler range. Long-established JCB dealer, Gunn JCB, has supplied TWW’s new equipment and the company is also responsible for the ongoing service and maintenance of the TWW MHE fleet.
In all, Tom White Waste – which celebrates its 30th anniversary in October this year – operates over 20 JCB models at its Coventry site. The fleet of specialist handling machines includes seven loading shovels, two telehandlers, two Teletruks and two telescopic handlers. Every model has been designed to deliver optimum performance in the most challenging environments. TWW recycles over 125,000 tonnes of mixed general and commercial waste at the Coventry facility and, typically, some 30 lorries are loaded each day. “We are increasingly able to help our trade waste customers achieve complete diversion from landfill and the JCB equipment plays a vital role in the efficiency of our on-site processes,” says Ian White, Managing Director of Tom White Waste. “Historically TWW has used other MHE brands but with these latest purchases our fleet is now 100% JCB – which is a significant milestone for our business and reflects our total satisfaction with the performance of the JCB range.”

Mining company Banks on Miller Performance studies have shown that repair and refurbishment can increase the life of heavy plant equipment for around 60% of the cost of a new replacement. The decision to repair rather than replace heavy plant equipment is a preference made by most businesses in the industry and this is no exception for Banks Mining at its Shotton Surface Mine. Part of the County Durhamheadquartered Banks Group, Banks Mining has been developing, operating and restoring surface coal mines in a modern, safe, responsible and efficient way throughout the north of England and Scotland to the highest possible standards for more than four decades.
Banks Mining have been extracting coal at Shotton since 2008 and currently mines around one million tonnes of coal per year. With a daily output of up to 190 coal wagons, the Shotton site is operating at maximum capacity. Maintaining the high output levels requires an extensive and well planned maintenance schedule particularly for the mine’s fleet of dump trucks and 14 CAT 785 skips, which are used to move overburden in the mine. Over time the skip is exposed to heavy wear and tear and to extend the lifespan of their fleet
48
Banks Mining have initiated a refurbishment programme. The first stage of the fleet refurbishment programme was to complete a full overhaul of a 150t CAT 785 skip. This task fell to local mining and construction attachment specialist Miller UK, who have over forty years of experience in the mining repairs sector. Miller UK’s dedicated repair centre, headed up by Conor Thompson have developed a bespoke overhaul programme specifically for Banks Mining which included a comprehensive full dumper body
DIGGERS & DOZERS
inspection and a scheduled overhaul timeframe in only eight weeks. “This was a big job with lots of challenges and we have used all of our expertise to carry out a full overhaul of the skip to meet the specific site requirements for Banks. The body design has been optimised for maximising wear ability, strength and reliability over the lifetime of the skip,” says Miller’s Specialist Products Division Manager, Conor Thompson. “Our customers count on our dependability and expertise and we take great pride in delivering on our commitments.” During the eight week refurbishment the CAT 785 skip overhaul included a full internal
reline, new external panels, canopy, duck tail and undersides manufactured with high strength steel and lined with Hardox. In addition to the replacement of key structural points of the body, there was severe cracking on most underside bolsters which were gouged out and re-welded before the skip was fully painted. Upon completion, the newly installed lifting points where fully checked and certified before the skip was lifted by two 60t cranes provided by Mammoet onto a low loader provided by Hubbway Hire and escorted back to the coal mine in Northumberland. Thanks to Miller, Banks Mining was able to reduce machine downtime and get the 150t machine promptly back into action.
49
“This was a large and complex repair and it made sense for us to use Miller’s expertise for this project. They offered us a free onsite inspection as well as an impressively quick turnaround, which has helped us to reduce our downtime”, says Andrew Palmer, plant supervisor at Banks Mining. “Miller offers a fantastic repair service and boasts a wide skillset, while it’s also a positive for us that they are a fellow north east company, as working with them ties in with our policy of investing in the local supply chain wherever possible’. We have been so happy with the job that they have done, we got a second CAT 785 skip collected by Miller and work has begun for another full overhaul.”

MAKING OUR MARK ON THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

NOX tiltrotators: Work smarter, faster and more profitably Anyone who has worked with a standard tiltrotator will be well aware of the benefits they bring. The addition of a tiltrotator turns your excavator into a more flexible and agile machine, making it possible to complete jobs in less time, using less labour, and with more precision and control, leading to productivity gains across the board. German attachment experts Kinshofer have taken these benefits a notch further with their cylinderless NOX tiltrotator – developing one of the most advanced tools on the excavator market. Featuring the market’s largest tilting angle of 50° on both sides and endless 360°
rotation, the NOX provides even greater mobility and flexibility and has quickly become recognised as a tool that offers unique benefits to machine operators. Forestry work, excavating narrow trenches and working around existing infrastructure are just some of the areas where conventional ram-based technology can be problematic. Protruding elements can be vulnerable to snagging or other damage – which is where the NOX really comes into its own. The substantial tilt offered by the NOX is generated not through cylinders but via an elliptic rotary actuator, delivering constant torque through the entire tilting angle. Unlike ram based alternatives, there is no drop-off in power across the tilt angle, resulting in a significant overall performance benefit. The endless rotation is provided through an extremely durable worm drive, immersed in an oilbath to enhance the unit’s lowmaintenance properties, with minimal wear parts, only two lubrication points and bearing bushes. The extremely compact and robust cast housing of the NOX protects the integrated hydraulics and can withstand the toughest of working environments.

Safety, productivity and costeffectiveness all stand to benefit from elements such as the twin D-Lock hitch and the fully hydraulic OilQuick quick-coupler system, which allows the NOX and hydraulically operated attachments to be changed within seconds. Operators can carry out a variety of tasks in a shorter timespan, quickly changing attachments from the cab, in a safer working environment.
Enabling effectiveness Combined with a range of quick couplers and additional attachment options, the NOX is suitable for excavators with an operating weight from three to 25 tonnes and is bringing improved efficiency results across many UK construction sites.
Adding a set of fork tines to a NOX allows you to convert your excavator into a forklift within seconds. The NOX can also be combined with a wide range of grabs and buckets. Universal bucket designs with a double conical shape are a perfect partner for the NOX, whether you’re carrying out embankment work, trenching or grading. Another clever addition to the NOX range is the TR Gripper tool, which can be cassette-mounted between a bucket or grading beam for example, allowing

precision handling of poles and curb stones. The proportional NOXPROP dual joy-stick control system is an option that provides greater control, precision, safety and comfort for the operator. It’s relatively quick and easy to install, with controls that can be easily adjusted via bespoke software to create an intuitive and effective control system. Multiple user-profile settings for individual operators can be set, stored and managed through a separate display screen. The NOX range also offers an optional electrical lead-through for quick couplers in accordance with the latest safety standards - and is ‘ready’ for 2D/3D excavator guidance systems. The development doesn’t stop there. Kinshofer is continuing to work with the industry’s latest technological developments to ensure the NOX stays at the forefront of maximising carrier machine effectiveness.

Doocey Group invest in Anaconda DF410 with Red Knight 6 Ltd Doocey Group Ltd, a multidisciplined groundworks, civil engineering and utility contractor have purchased the Anaconda DF410 Scalper Screen from Red Knight 6 Ltd (RK6), the appointed dealer for Anaconda in the UK. Doocey Group, an independent, family run business, operating nationally, enjoyed a successful trial period with the DF410 before opting to purchase. A recent increase in business has not only seen Doocey Group increase their number of sites,
but also meant a review of the machines they have in their recycling fleet.
with the output” said Chris Gilbert, recycling manager with the Doocey Group.
“The ongoing success of our business has meant we required a bigger screener to run alongside the RUBBLE MASTER RM80 that we have on site. By opting for the Anaconda DF410 we can process more material and more efficiently at our recycling yard in Dudley. The machine is well built, capable of a much higher output than our existing model. We are delighted
“We were asked to recommend a 3-way split screener to supplement the current processing taking place and a trial of the DF410 was the easy choice to make as it works so well alongside the RM80 crusher. This approach will improve topsoil yields and reduces the quantity of stone to be crushed,” said Liam Wallace, area sales manager for RK6. Red Knight 6 Ltd is an innovative business supplying the quarry and recycling industries with the sales, service, spare parts and hire of crushing, screening and recycling equipment. As the appointed dealers for Anaconda Equipment International, RUBBLE MASTER and Komplet Recycling Systems, RK6 are experienced in delivering pride in their products and excellence in their customer service.
