VIVA LAS VEGAS
EDITORIAL
By the time you get to read this, my bags will be packed. The five pound notes in my wallet will have been replaced with 20 dollar bills; I will have completed the YouTube course on “how to play blackjack” and I will be readying myself for 11 hours of Deep Vein Thrombosis-inducing strap-hanging travel to Las Vegas for the latest ConExpo exhibition.

As this is a non-Bauma year, ConExpo will represent the largest gathering of construction equipment in 2020; making it a Mecca to plant owners, operators and equipment enthusiasts from around the world. If the hype is to be believed – and believe me, nowhere does hype quite like Vegas – this promises to be a truly massive and memorable show. The industry’s big-hitters – Caterpillar, Case, Komatsu, Liebherr, Volvo and Hitachi – will all be there in force; and each of them is promising a wealth of new machines.

But ConExpo 2020 is important for more than just new machines. It will be my first visit to the US since President Trump took office and commenced what is surely now the most controversial presidency in US history. Say what you like about the man, but his positive impact upon the US economy is undeniable. And even those that were less than enthused about his election win have had to concede that he has stuck to his electoral promises to boost infrastructure spending.

Moreover, when the US catches cold, the rest of the world sneezes (having first consulted a doctor about suspected coronavirus). So while ConExpo will be taking place some 5,000 miles from our front door, the show has the potential to set the tone of the wider construction equipment sector. An upbeat ConExpo – which is what we all expect – will provide a welcome boost to industry sentiment from Nevada to Newcastle and from Las Vegas to Llandudno.

DIGGERS & DOZERS
THE NEW CHINESE WAY
Diggers and Dozers went to see the new wave of excavators and mini excavators on offer from Chinese manufacturer Sunward and came away suitably impressed with the machines AND with the team behind them. Believe it or not, there was a time when Japanese-built excavators were widely derided by the UK plant sector. They were cheap, the industry exclaimed, and not very cheerful. They were boxy, the cabs and seats were too small for UK posteriors, and they had no residual value. A few manufacturers fell by the wayside but the sector ahs long since taken the likes of Hitachi and Komatsu to its heart. Today, the pair vie for supremacy in a highly competitive UK excavator market.
4
DIGGERS & DOZERS
Fast-forward a decade or so and history repeated when the first Korean-built machines made landfall. Once again they were initially dismissed. Once again, a few manufacturers didn’t stay the course. Once again, a few did and today the likes of Hyundai and Doosan are now an integral part of the UK plant landscape. Against such a proven background, equipment arriving from China should be dismissed at our collective peril. If history has taught us anything, it is that those manufacturers that recognise the marked difference between the demands of an Asian customer and one from the UK and adapt and evolve accordingly can secure themselves a slice of the UK market.
Based upon our visit to Sunward UK in Solihull, the next one to watch will be Sunward. Not only are the machines largely indistinguishable from a Japanese competitor such as Kubota, the approach taken by the (alarmingly) young sales team at Sunward Excavators is already making inroads and shows no signs of stopping.
Mini to Mighty
Equipment sales often follow the line of least resistance so it is no great surprise that Sunward UK’s initial success has been built around the mini excavator
We have already seen LiuGong win a not insignificant portion of the highly demanding UK demolition sector with a range of machines that is Westernised.
5
end of the company’s range. It is notable that the company is already enjoying repeat custom; a sure sign that the machines are everything they’re cracked up to be. Each of the mini excavators in the Sunward range feature Yanmar diesel engines that will be familiar to anyone that has worked in the plant industry in the past 20 years. The machines come with “all-mod-cons”. There are canopies at the smaller end and notably good cabs at the upper end. Regular and zero tailswing options means there is a mini
DIGGERS & DOZERS
machine to suit just about any application. Significantly, these machines give no hint of their country of origin. Strip away the paint, decals and the price tag and it would take an eagle-eyed plant enthusiast to tell a Sunward machine from a Kubota or a Takeuchi. The story does not end there. For while Sunward UK has focused initially on the mini machines,
the Sunward excavator range extends up to 90 tonnes. It might be a while till we see one of those machines make landfall here in the UK but – as I said previously – we said the same of Komatsu and Hitachi.
Youthful Vigour
The machines themselves are only part of the reason that established competitors should be looking over their shoulders. Another reason is the team doing the
selling. They are infuriatingly young and are not bound by the conventions of tradition. With his footballer haircut, director Joshua McNally looks every inch like an escapee from Love Island. Fellow director Ian Rollinson speaks like he has studied mini excavator technology since he was in primary school (about three years ago, based upon his appearance). Together, they are a study in infectious youthful enthusiasm. While some of their competitors are still grieving at the demise of their last fax machine, McNally and Rollinson are busily growing the Sunward brand via social media. Sunward is already the mini excavator of the Instagram generation. There will be those, of course, that believe that social media is a fad; that will tell you that equipment sales take place face-to-face, ideally over a pie and a pint in a pub decorated with horse brasses. However, such claims sound increasingly like the death rattle of stubborn traditionalists that have failed or refused to move with the times. A 1.0 tonne Sunward SWE 08B is available from as little as £58 per week. At that price point, it is no longer a piece of capital equipment, it is a commodity; a commodity that could quite easily be purchased online using a credit or debit card. So while traditional equipment sales take place - largely – between 9am and 5pm, traffic permitting, Sunward UK is selling 24/7 come rain or shine. As I said at the very beginning of this article, we are wrong to dismiss this latest generation of Chinese excavators. The industry dismisses this new generation of equipment salesmen at its peril. THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT
Construction is becoming more influenced by technologies within the gaming industry. So who better to take Volvo Construction Equipment’s (Volvo CE) connected solutions into the future than Carina Mclane – a relative newcomer to construction but an expert in visionary app development.
Efficiency is about more than just powerful products. Machine software is playing an increasingly important role in analysing and finding areas of improvement out on the job site – and using that data to adapt and advance our machines and operations for the future. Which is why Volvo CE has a dedicated and diverse team of experts from both within construction and other industries,
who are working to fuse together the two worlds of conventional construction and high-tech app development. “We’ve barely scratched the surface of how apps can help us be more productive,” says Carina Mclane, Senior Software Developer for Intelligent Machine Platforms at Volvo CE. “The more connected and aware the apps are, the more they can understand our

behaviour and feed back to the user. These technologies have a huge role to play in analysing how we work today and how we can drive construction efficiency tomorrow. The trick is to make the apps simple, engaging and userfriendly, so that everyone wants to use them.” Since joining Volvo CE just one year ago, she has been engaged

in developing Operator Coaching. It is a new app that forms part of the Load Assist family and is now available in select markets across the world. The latest upgrade gives operators of Volvo’s L110H to L260H wheel loaders real time information so that they can better understand how their actions influence output. A bit like chasing a top score on a computer game, the new feature allows operators to set targets and objectives for continual performance improvement. Operator Coaching Operator Coaching is just one example of how gaming trends are influencing the world of construction. Carina and the team are also working on a number of new and improved applications within Volvo CE, all designed to help boost construction productivity. For Carina, whose previous expertise has been as a Virtual and Augmented Reality Lead within the Creative Technologies cluster at the University of the West of England in the UK, the move into construction has been a steep learning curve.
“When I first joined Volvo CE, it was quite a challenge to adapt to an entirely new industry,” she says. “But I’ve since been surprised by how far ahead construction is in employing emerging technologies. It’s the mix of high tech and low tech that is the challenge. Construction is so advanced in areas such as automation, but a lot of the processes for app development are just not there yet, so it’s been fascinating to explore ways to bridge that gap.” Mclane explains that a lot of teamwork is required to turn a great idea into a release-worthy product, so together with product experts they spend time asking questions such as ‘are they addressing the right issues for operators out in the field?’, ‘are the algorithms correlated with industry standard operator training?’ and most importantly ‘are they easy to use?’. “I love seeing how people respond to using the apps we develop. For example, it was great how even very experienced and proficient operators were seeing the advantages of Operator
10
Coaching,” she says. “They said it helped them to see their behaviour reflected back in a non-judgmental way, to analyse their productivity from a pure efficiency standpoint and then to suggest areas of improvement that they would never have considered before.” Carina Mclane’s arrival at Volvo Construction Equipment marks her return to birthplace of Eskilstuna, Sweden. “I’ve always been interested in the combination of a great visual and the functional architecture behind it. This is what makes app development so rewarding. It is the combination of not only developing innovative functionality, but packaging it with both looks and user experience in mind,” she concludes. “One of the biggest rewards of the past year has been to sit in the driving seat of a wheel loader and see the connection between this big yellow machine and this little seemingly insignificant app. It’s something intangible but incredibly special when it all comes together.”

DIGGERS & DOZERS
Just in time for the massive ConExpo exhibition in Las Vegas in March, Diggers and Dozers has joined the audio podcast revolution.
Regardless of whether you’re reading the Diggers and Dozers website or this magazine; watching one of our videos on YouTube or on Facebook; or if you’re one of the 180,000+ people following us on Instagram, everything we do requires you to stop what you’re doing. Or at least it did.
Our sister publication DemolitionNews has had an audio podcast for the past two years, and has amassed a global listening audience of around 28,000 people. Based on that success, and fuelled by a desire to bring you industry news, views and insights that don’t interrupt your working day or your social life, Diggers and
12
Dozers has now followed suit. “The great thing about podcasts is that you can consume them while you’re doing something else,” says Diggers and Dozers editor Mark Anthony. “You can listen to them in the cab of a machine, in the car, on the train or while walking the dog.”
DIGGERS & DOZERS
It will take a few weeks before the new Diggers and Dozers podcast becomes available on platforms such as iTunes and Google Play but the show is already on Spotify and you can link to it directly using the link at the foot of this article. Mark Anthony is keen to point out that the podcast is more than just an audio version of the magazine. “With paper publishing, we have strict limits on how long articles can be. We might give a new machine a page or two of coverage,” he explains. “In audio format, we have no such restrictions. We can cover machines and industry issues in far greater depth.” Anthony believes that the podcast also has the ability to give a voice to some of the unsung heroes of the industry. “From the very outset, we wanted to give equipment operators a voice; a platform for them to express views, ideas and concerns that generally go unheard. That was one of the key drivers in our launch of the What’s My Ride show,” Anthony continues. “We hear from equipment manufacturers, dealers and hirers all the time. But no-one knows equipment like the men and women that operate it.” The timing of the new podcast could not have been better. The Diggers and Dozers team will be attending the ConExpo exhibition in Las Vegas in March and is planning to bring back some exclusive audio content featuring the sights, sounds and the machines on display.
I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRU One of the UK’s leading plant hirers has added another 30 new JCB Loadall telescopic handlers to its fleet as part of a massive investment in over 300 JCB machines worth nearly £16 million. Ipswich-based TRU Plant has taken delivery of the latest JCB 540-140 HiViz Loadalls which incorporate JCB’s compact Dieselmax 3.0-litre EU Stage V diesel engine to deliver five percent fuel savings over previous models. Supplied by Watling JCB, they join backhoe loader, rough terrain forklift, Teletruk, site dumper and other telehandler models in the huge fleet of JCB equipment purchased by TRU Plant over the last 18 months. TRU Plant is part of the TRU7 Group – run by Guy Nicholls – which also incorporates haulage, recycling, vehicle hire, waste and recycling and demolition divisions. The Nicholls family has an illustrious history in plant hire having previously established Fork Rent which they sold in 2015. We are truly passionate about plant hire and the whole team here at TRU7 Group shares our attitude and expertise. Thanks to our resources and, most
“The audio format allows our audience to engage with our content like never before,” Mark Anthony concludes. “I admit that an audio podcast can never really replicate the experience of attending an exhibition in Las Vegas. But it is the next best thing.” You can listen to the Diggers and Dozers podcast here: https://anchor.fm/mark191

importantly, the right equipment, we have quickly put TRU Plant on the map as a major player in the hire industry,” says owner Guy Nicholls. “There are many reasons we choose JCB. We are loyal to the brand which has played a major part in our success, we have a long-standing relationship with the company and the customer care we receive from our dealer Watling JCB is excellent. We’ve been very impressed with the new JCB machines as we strive to invest in the best equipment on the market.” Guy Nicholls and son Jake set up the TRU Plant hire division in 2018. It now offers an extensive selection of quality plant equipment from its East Anglia base, available for hire nationally. The fleet includes excavators, dumpers, dozers, chippers, telehandlers, lighting towers and ancillary equipment all available on a self-drive or operated basis. Tru7 dates back to 1927 when Percy Nicholls set up a truck hire business. In addition to TRU Plant, the group now includes Trucks ’R’ Us, Tippers ‘R’ Us, CDC Demolition, TRU Grab and TRU Ag and it employs 160 people at its Suffolk branch.

The second model was delivered in October 2019 with a 6m³ high-tip bucket and is used at a site in Wales. “We ordered these models specifically for these projects and to meet our customers’ requirements,” says Managing Director Anthony Hickey. “There is a good residual value on Hitachi machines, so therefore it’s commercially viable for us. If the work dries up, and you’ve
As part of the buy-back arrangement, both wheel loaders are covered by a full package 6,000 hour/three-year warranty and maintained by Hitachi Construction Machinery (UK) Ltd. “So far, the machines have proved reliable and any minor points that have arisen have been sorted quickly by HCMUK,” he adds. “The buy-back was important in our decision to invest in the two wheel loaders, and it enables us to calculate our costs over three years. It’s a good overall package, with a strong residual, and it proves to us that Hitachi has confidence in the reliability of its products.” “Our customers at both sites are happy with the performance of the Hitachi wheel loaders, as are the operators - thanks to the userfriendly cab,” explains Anthony. “And if our customers are happy, then we’re happy.” The Hitachi buy-back scheme applies to ZW150-6 to ZW550-6 wheel loaders. The machine must be in good working order, less than five years old and have worked a maximum of 2,000 hours per year.

STAGE V COMPLETE With the launch of the new DX380LC-7 40 tonne model, Doosan has completed the company’s 30-40 tonne family of Stage V excavators. Together with the new Stage V DX300LC-7 30 tonne and DX350LC-7 36 tonne models, the DX380LC-7 offers an unmatched combination of high performance, operating features, fuel efficiency, reliability and durability in this class. The DX380LC-7 Is powered by the Scania DC09 Stage V compliant diesel engine, providing 240 kW of power at 1,800 RPM. There are now four power modes available on all three machines, which help to simplify the operation of the new
excavators compared to the more complex choice of eight power modes and SPC combinations in the previous generation machines. The operator is able to set the power mode (P+, P, S or E) in both one-way and two-way working modes. In common with the DX350LC-7 crawler excavator, the DX380LC-7 features Doosan’s innovative D-ECOPOWER technology, providing operators with higher productivity and lower fuel consumption per hour, as well as smoother controls. The D-ECOPOWER technology focuses on the role of the hydraulics system and demonstrates Doosan’s
16
continuous iteration of all the processes and components utilised in the company’s new generation products to achieve unprecedented levels of diesel energy efficiency. Doosan’s D-ECOPOWER technology utilises an electronic pressure-controlled pump within a closed centre hydraulic system to accomplish increases of up to 26 percent in productivity and up to 12 percent in fuel consumption improvements, depending on the mode selected. A closed centred main control valve minimises pressure loss, while the electric pressure-controlled pump manages and optimises engine power more effectively.
DIGGERS & DOZERS
The D-ECOPOWER system uses nine sensors to detect the amount of hydraulic oil necessary to accomplish a specific task and precisely meter the amount of oil required rather than continuously forcing a fixed amount of oil through the system, improving efficiency. Software is utilised to electronically reproduce the full benefits of an open centre hydraulic system with very little energy loss. The hydraulic system and engine horsepower are fully optimised and synchronised, further reducing losses within the system. Improved feedback to the operator through the joystick results
in improved machine control and less operator fatigue. The acceleration and deceleration of the excavator workgroup functions are smoother, allowing operators to perform repetitive swinging and digging motions with less jerking movements.
provide full visibility around the excavator and allow the operator to see a top-down view of the area outside the machine. The camera array comprises a front camera, two side cameras and a rear camera. The camera display is separated from the gauge panel.
The new cab in the DX380LC-7 model takes operator comfort and ease of operation to unheralded levels. Like the other two Stage V models, the cab has a new high quality seat and offers more features as standard than other machines on the market, ensuring super controllability and high precision in all applications. As standard, 360° cameras
The new DX380LC-7 model is factory-installed with Doosan’s state-of-the-art DoosanCONNECT wireless fleet monitoring system. The DoosanCONNECT system offers a web-based fleet management solution which is very useful for monitoring the performance and security of machines and promoting preventative maintenance.

PAINT IT BLACK
Guggenberger GmbH, based in the Regensburg district, has recently purchased two Liebherr L 566 XPower wheel loaders from Liebherr sales partner Carl Beutlhauser Baumaschinen GmbH. Both machines look resplendent in the distinctive corporate colour of this traditional construction company. For high quality standards in paintwork, Liebherr-Werk Bischofshofen GmbH offers special paint finishes ex works. Unusually however, the special paintwork is not completed in a single stage at the end of the production process but instead the relevant component parts are painted before being assembled. The two XPower® wheel loaders are in operation at Guggenberger GmbH in the company’s asphalt mixing plant. Here, the company mixes around 120,000 tonnes of asphalt every year and handles around 50,000 tonnes of other bulk materials. For this work, the L 566 XPower is equipped with 4.6 m³ buckets, the new joystick steering and the new weighing device for notable feature. The wheel loaders, which weigh approximately 24 tonnes, consume just under 11
litres of diesel per operating hour in their daily work. Specifying machines in your corporate colour increases the brand awareness for construction companies on the construction site. For construction machines, paintwork in the company’s colours is often performed after production, which is time consuming and detrimental to the quality. Liebherr-Werk Bischofshofen GmbH follows a different strategy. It produces wheel loaders in customer-specific colours directly in the factory. One example of this is the new anthracite-black wheel loaders for Guggenberger GmbH. The specialists in the Liebherr factory paint the individual components in the desired customer colour before assembly. Then, the specially painted components are assembled in the regular production process to form the finished wheel loader. Subsequent painting or manual reworking of the wheel loader is not necessary. Liebherr is therefore able to efficiently
18
implement customer-specific paintwork of all types and ensure consistently high quality. Guggenberger GmbH carries out projects in various business sectors, for example in building construction, turnkey construction, civil engineering or road construction. Around 80 per cent of orders received by Guggenberger GmbH are repeat orders from long-term customers. This underlines the fact that the family company founded in 1949 also stands for consistently high quality in the construction industry. Markus Guggenberger has been at the helm of the company since 2014. The company has 470 employees and is in its third generation. He appreciates the close cooperation with Carl Beutlhauser Baumaschinen GmbH in Passau and is pleased that Liebherr has implemented Guggenberger’s typical anthracite-black design for his new wheel loaders in a straightforward way and direct from the factory.

PUTTING THE GREEN IN MOLSON GREEN
DIGGERS & DOZERS
Molson Green, the specialist recycling and material handling division of Bristol-based plant and equipment dealer Molson Group, has expanded its agreement with the leading Bavarian crane and material handling manufacturer Sennebogen to supply the company’s scrap metal and port handling machines throughout the UK. This move sees Molson improve its position as a single source supply option for mobile plant and equipment to a wide range of industries. From 12 depots spread throughout the UK and over 100 service engineers, Molson is one of the largest suppliers of construction, recycling and material handling equipment in the UK offering a 360- degree range of products including material handlers, loading shovels, excavators, dump trucks, crushers, screeners and conveyors to name a few. “We are extremely excited about the addition of the Scrap and Port industries to our Sennebogen product range and the opportunity for growth that it creates. This addition perfectly positions Molson to simplify our customers supply chains with a single source supply option, thanks to our 360-degree product range with an after sales service that can be counted on,” says Robin Powell, joint Managing Director of Molson Group. “Although the ports industry particularly is new for us, we have been gearing up for this for some time – we have the right people in place through our organisation to hit the ground running and deliver customers with the right solution for their business and an after sales team can keep their operation running at optimal performance.”
21
Alfred Endl, Sales Director for Sennebogen commented: “Molson has generated impressive growth across the UK in the recycling, timber and demolition sectors, this along with the outstanding levels of customer service that they deliver made it a natural choice to expand their industries. We are very happy with how Molson are continuing to build and promote the Sennebogen product range in the UK market and we look forward to working with them to support this growth in the Ports and Scrap industries.” Since first signing an agreement with Sennebogen in November 2015 for the distribution rights for products to the Waste, Timber and Demolition industries in the UK, their ambitious approach has seen Molson achieve an impressive growth in market share for the easily spotted green machines. The addition of the Scrap Metal and Ports industries represents a significant opportunity for Molson to expand its business further into new industries, building on the strong reputation Sennebogen already holds in these sectors. Molson have already positioned themselves well to capitalise on this appointment after building a team of Scrap Metal and Port industry specialists with significant experience in the Sales and Service teams. With this depth of knowledge within the team, customers can be confident that they are dealing with the experts who also have the scale and backup infrastructure to deliver the outstanding levels of after sales support that the Molson brand is already synonymous with in the construction and recycling industries.

TOPCON’S PARKLIFE Situated on the southern edge of Leicester, Fosse Shopping Park is one of Britain’s biggest out-oftown shopping parks, attracting thousands of visitors each year. As part of a £155 million extension to the Fosse Shopping Park, McDermotts Building & Civil Engineering Ltd — a Chartered Institute of Building accredited construction firm — was appointed to complete the groundworks for the car park at the site, in preparation for a new surface to be laid. To prepare the land for the multi-million-pound works, McDermotts turned to Topcon Positioning, to provide a solution with significant time saving benefits. “We have an ongoing partnership with Topcon and have been using its machine control technology for a number of years now,”

explains Gavin Taylor, Senior Site Engineer at McDermotts. “For the Fosse Shopping Park project in particular, we really saw the benefits of using the technology for positioning the dozers and digging out the foundations, and cut and fill when we were preparing the land for resurfacing.” Topcon 3D machine control systems use GNSS data and 3D models to accurately deliver earthworks. Satellite positioning data communicates with a predetermined 3D model to give operators and engineers an accurate view of the machine’s current position compared to the desired result. This means decisions can be made based on highly detailed information, rather than on human judgment and traditional methods — both
of which are less accurate compared to machine control systems, and can have a detrimental impact on surveying and materials cost. “If we were to have completed these works using traditional methods, it would have taken us a lot longer,” continues Taylor. “As well as saving us time and money in terms of man hours on site, there was also an added element of safety. By using the machine control technology in conjunction with 3D modeling software, we were able to show the operators where the live surfaces were, so they knew to avoid them where possible, reducing safety risks on site.” Some machine control platforms also provide material control capabilities, acting as a productivity tool for users and reducing the amount of material waste on projects. Simplifying grading, mass haul, and compaction enables

operators to focus on material and site safety. Topcon’s 3D machine control platform in particular uses SiteLink 3D, an innovative platform that provides remote access and support to every machine connected to the system — including file transfers, messaging, reporting and analytics. This means any potential machine downtime is dramatically reduced as issues can be resolved in real time without the need for on-site technical support. Instead, engineers can troubleshoot operator queries remotely and ensure work continues with minimal delay. “The machine control system from Topcon is absolutely brilliant, especially for this type of project,” Gavin Taylor concludes. “In fact, we’ve been able to save hours of time on the Fosse Shopping Park site, as well as increasing safety for our team and reducing the amount of material waste.”

CRUSHING IT Alutrade Ltd, one of the UK’s leading scrap aluminium recycling specialists, has invested in a Yanmar SV60 midi excavator to further improve the efficiencies of its baling press. Ordered through Johnston Plant Sales, Yanmar’s dealer for Birmingham and the West Midlands, the brand new model was delivered to its new owners in January 2020 and is already in operation at the Alutrade headquarters in Oldbury. Powerful, compact, durable and dependable, the SV60 was deemed the perfect solution to feed the company’s state-of-the-art baling press. Fitted with an extended dozer blade and an aftermarket grab attachment, loose cans are quickly and effectively moved
into the infeed hopper. “Running a 24/4 shift pattern and handling more than 3,000 tonnes of scrap aluminium per month, we needed a reliable machine capable of faultlessly feeding our plant,” says operations director Mike George. “With two Yanmar excavators already operational on site, both purchased within the past 18 months, investing in a new SV60 model was an easy decision. The SV60 not only delivers excellent reach and unmatched stability, but also has a spacious, highly-specified cabin to maximise operator comfort. Since taking delivery of the new model, we’ve been thoroughly impressed with its performance. It keeps our line running at optimum throughput and continues to perform faultlessly.
30
Rolled out across the UK and Ireland in July 2018, the Yanmar SV60 offers the performance of a midi-excavator with the spacesaving benefits of a more compact model. Powered by Yanmar’s 4TNV84T-ZMBVA engine, the five-tonne model has been specifically designed to minimise fuel consumption and reduce operational emissions. Additional fuel-saving features, such as Auto-Deceleration (enabling the engine to idle if operating levers aren’t touched) and Eco Mode (which reduces motor speed to 300rpm) make the SV60 one of Yanmar’s most ecofriendly models ever. “We have two other SV60 models on site, which have both totalled more than 5,500 hours on the clock in less than 15 months,” concludes Mike George. “It’s this reliability – and ability to perform in tough conditions – that keeps us coming back to Yanmar time and time again.”

CHURCH BELLS Taking technologically advanced routes to break new ground, one of the South West region’s largest civil engineering, earthworks and waste management contractors, MJ Church has returned once again to Bell Equipment for the purchase of a recent consignment of Articulated Dump Truck vehicles.
of five machines is due in part to the manufacturer’s Fleetm@ tic satellite-based, management system. The tech, which allows operators to keep projects on schedule, maintain machine health and reduce running costs, can be securely accessed from any location with an internet connection, providing a gateway to valuable data that can significantly improve a client’s fleet performance.
Opting for a combination of new and pre-owned machines, the leading sector performer has chosen to add 15 Bell B30Es to its sizeable fleet over recent years, enhancing the level of dumper truck technology for its client base.
Driven by a series of satellites with worldwide coverage, the Fleetm@tic device sends raw data to the Bell Equipment server, where it is compiled into easily comprehensible reports. The kit also includes a driver ID mechanism and a service indicator to help prevent machines from running over their service hours.
At MJ Church, offering clients the latest technology alongside high performing capabilities is part of the company’s operational ethos, and its decision to return to Bell Equipment for a recent purchase
“Returning to Bell Equipment has been an easy decision to make. Historically, we’ve received solid performances from the manufacturer’s vehicles and found the customer service to be

He explains that the inclusion of Fleetm@tic has enabled his trucks to be primed and ready to work with standard onboard weighing measuring from three points, i-tip, Hill Assist and other safety alerts; each designed to increase productivity, enhance driver safety and reduce operational risks. Furthermore, with Bell always looking for ways to improve the technological features of its trucks, Tom announces that he is in discussions with the manufacturer to create new portals within the system, from which other machines within his fleet can be managed. “We find working with Bell to be a positive experience and we’re always impressed with the team’s enthusiasm for seeking out new opportunities, original products and modifications to improve specific applications,” Church concludes. “It’s a great company to do business with and one that has an eye to the future. Regarding a future purchase? Yes, I would return to Bell, without hesitation.”
DIG LIKE A GIRL A Stockport-based firm has received a business boost from retail entrepreneur and former Dragon’s Den dragon Theo Paphitis. Pamela Evans, owner of Evans Excavation, tweeted Paphitis about her business during ‘Small Business Sunday’ and was one of six weekly winners to gain a retweet by the dragon to his 500,000 Twitter followers. In addition, Evans has been invited down to Birmingham to receive her award and meet Theo himself on 28th February. Evans hopes that the award will boost her profile and highlight the challenges facing women in the construction industry. “When I got my operators licence, I was the youngest person in the country to do so and the first female in the North West. Since starting my own business, I have really had to battle to establish myself and the reputation of my business in an industry where women can find it difficult to fit-in, particularly on-site,” she says. “I was always told I couldn’t do a man’s job, so I made it my job. It is great to have support from
Theo and equally that he has recognised my hard work and helped spread the word about what we do to his following.” Evans wants to change assumptions in the industry and, by telling the story of her own journey, hopes to highlight some of the changes that are needed in order for more women to feel they can have a career in construction. “We are thrilled to welcome new #SBS members every week and highlight just how important it is to support our small businesses here in the UK. My vision is that everyone who has ever won an #SBS re-tweet from me becomes part of a friendly club; like-minded individuals who can share successes and learnings,” concludes Theo Paphitis. “The website will also give a valuable profile to the winners chosen and I wish Evans Excavation every success.” Pamela Evans also features in an episode of the new What’s My Ride podcast, exclusive to Diggers and Dozers. BESPOKE VOLVO IS CUSTOM FIT Scott Young & Sons of Lockerbie, Dumfries & Galloway, has taken delivery of a new bespoke sixteen-tonne Volvo EC160E for its general contracting business. Joining an existing EC160E and EC220E, a new EC160E with a unique two-piece boom and Steelwrist X20 tilt rotator comes festooned with a host of added extras that make it a very bespoke machine indeed. Established in 1992, proprietor Scott Young senior is joined in the daily running of this company by his two sons, Steven and Scott Young junior. This family-run business specialises in forestry work, building and maintenance of forest tracks, as well as some general contracting work, crushing and screening. At the business end of the new sixteen-tonne machine, Scott Young junior interchanges attachments between the Steelwrist tilt rotator and a mulcher. “The machine has plenty of power to operate the mulcher and, in conjunction with the priority control valve, makes it highly responsive,” comments Scott Young junior. “Using the Steelwrist tilt rotator
in conjunction with the two piece boom makes the machine very versatile as well, especially when I’m working on narrow forest tracks and up against embankments. Other features that have been specified on the machine include additional all round LED lighting, heavy duty guarding for the cab and a machine superstructure that was produced specifically for the EC160E by Lammer Engineering of Gifford, East Lothian. It also sports side impact protection for the superstructure, a special deflector mounted on the dipper arm, a Prolec height limiter device, Lexan safety glass for the windscreen and a factory fitted dozer blade with heavy-duty wear plate. The EC160E is powered by a Stage V compliant 4-cylinder Volvo engine, developing 148 hp. The machine’s ‘Integrated work mode control’ provides high efficiency, rapid dig cycles which greatly reduces fuel consumption. This advanced mode control system ensures the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered
34
at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions. In addition, the two piece boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which makes for faster work cycles and, at the same time, makes the machine highly adaptable for the typical work undertaken by Scott Young. For example, the maximum reach with the 2.6 metre dipper arm is 8.87metres, whilst the maximum dig depth is a generous 5.5 metres. Furthermore, the machine is capable of digging to its maximum depth at a mere 3.0 metres from the machine centre. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders, as are quick fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service. The X3 rotation circuit comes as an optional extra. “It’s early days yet, but so far I’m very pleased with the way the machine is performing; it is certainly ticking all the boxes as far as I’m concerned,” concludes Scott Young. “The machine is robust, well-built and extremely comfortable from the operator’s point of view; I cannot fault it.”

DOOSAN ON DISPLAY An advanced line-up of excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks (ADTs) awaits guests at Doosan’s Stand No N10001 at the ConExpo 2020 show.
CONEXPO PREVIEW
Visitors can explore the latest Doosan models such as the DA45 ADT, the DL580-5 wheel loader and the DX800LC-5 crawler excavator - the largest Doosan machine yet. Doosan will also showcase Concept-X, an autonomous worksite in development as the company invests in meeting the construction industry’s future equipment and technology needs. The new Stage V compliant DA45 ADT is being shown for the first time at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2020. The DA45 has a payload of 41 tonne and is powered by the new Scania Stage V DC13 13 litre diesel engine with an output of 368 kW (500 HP).
The new Scania engine has undergone two years of very intensive testing in exacting construction and mining environments and have passed with flying colours. Whilst the core of the Scania engine, which has been responsible for its exceptional reliability, has not changed, the main difference in the new engine from its predecessor is the improved after-treatment system. The new DA45 Stage V machine features a new cab and a semilevelling front suspension that adjusts itself independently depending on the operating conditions to ensure a comfortable working environment for the operator. As well as these changes, the new Stage V model offers many more features - one of the most eye-catching is a new design for the front frame and bonnet components on the trucks, created
40
by the Doosan Design Team in accordance with the latest trends in the market. Like all Doosan ADTs, the new DA45 features an articulation hinge positioned behind the turning ring to provide equal weight distribution to the front axle even during maximum steer articulation. This combined with a free-swinging rear tandem bogie ensures equal distribution of weight to each wheel and guarantees permanent 6-wheel contact and drive for equal power distribution and excellent performance particularly on difficult terrains such as soft ground, uneven surfaces, very steep slopes, tight turns or a combination of all of these difficult conditions. With a bucket capacity of 5.4 m3, the DL580-5 top-of-the-range
DIGGERS & DOZERS
wheel loader has a similar look to the next model in the range, the DL550-5, but features robust structural components and an advanced sophisticated double circuit axle oil cooler system. This provides an ideal solution for applications such as block lifting and other heavier materialhandling needs in industrial, construction, recycling, mining and quarrying applications. To meet these requirements, the DL580-5 has an operating weight of 36,030 kg and higher static tipping loads (straight/full turn 40°) of 29,700 and 26,200 kg, respectively. The overall size of the DL580-5 is almost the same as the DL550-5, but the new model is equipped with a series of features that make the machine extremely
reliable and durable. For example, the front structure is more rugged, with greater rigidity and strength. The DL580-5 has reinforced Z-bar kinematics for heavier lifting with few moving parts. This design also helps stabilise the loader, enables rapid bucket movements and keeps the bucket at the right angle position at all times. As with all Doosan DL-5 models, the DL580-5 is also available with a High-lift configuration, with a longer arm enabling higher dumping of materials. The DL580-5 is powered by the Scania DC13 6-cylinder engine producing 283 kW of power at 1800 rpm. The Scania DC13 engine provides a generous maximum
torque of 1765 Nm at 1,300 rpm and up to a 10 percent reduction in fuel consumption and excellent response. As well as the powerful Scania DC13 engine, the DL580-5 also features automatic 5-speed powershift transmission, heavy duty cooled axles, a high comfort cab, smooth and responsive hydraulics and auxiliary hydraulic connections, together providing a solution for the heaviest jobs that need to be done. As with all other Doosan DL-5 wheel loaders, most of these features are standard on the DL580-5 unlike other machines on the market where they are options and many have been developed to optimise fuel efficiency.

consumption. A new equipment concept with a modified piece at the top of the boom is an innovative new feature. This leads to better performance and equipment forces with reduced operating weight of the machine. Another feature is the optimized load curve, which yields reduced fuel consumption. These machines have been specially designed to provide extra comfort and safety for the operator, as well as optimum ergonomics and performance on the job site. Liebherr will also present four wheel loaders at the show. This includes an L 566 XPower with power-split travel drive. Liebherr installs this drive as standard on its large XPower wheel loaders. It combines short loading cycles with optimal hydrostatic drive with the mechanical drive, the benefits of which come into effect over long distances and up hills. The L 566 XPower is also equipped with numerous new assistance systems, which Liebherr is showing for the first time in North America at the exhibition. These include active personnel detection, adaptive working lighting, an integrated tire

pressure monitoring system and the weighing system with Truck Payload Assist. The L 566 XPower also has the new joystick steering for wheel loaders. The largest Liebherr wheel loader, the 32.6 tonne L 586 XPower, will also be at the exhibition stand. With a power split XPower drive, it delivers high performance and enormous fuel savings. The L 538 represents the Liebherr mediumsized wheel loader range. It is equipped with parallel kinematics for high holding forces in the upper lift arms area. It is ideal for working in heavy-duty industrial applications such as in recycling with high dump buckets. For customers from countries in Central and South America, Liebherr is showing the L 550 wheel loader. It is a representative of the separate wheel loader series for less emission-regulated markets. The Liebherr A 920 Litronic wheeled excavator on display at the show has an operating weight of 18.3 to 21.3 tonnes and an engine output of 129 kW. The powerful Liebherr wheeled excavator is
particularly suitable for road, canal and pipeline construction as well as for classic earthmoving work and is characterized by high mobility and versatility. The strong undercarriage as well as the outriggers at the rear and front ensure maximum stability and safety every time the machine is used. This enables the A 920 Litronic to carry out all work reliably, precisely and extremely productively, even under full load. Liebherr is also introducing its latest Generation 8 dozers to North America at Conexpo 2020 with the new PR 736. Equipped with many features that further enhance operator comfort, excellent grading characteristics and new standard grading systems, the PR 736 Generation 8 is a do-it-all machine for grading and mining use. The PR 736 is powered by a newly developed Liebherr diesel engine belonging to the EVO series (160 kW. It meets emission level Tier 4f, its exhaust gases being cleaned by a combination between a diesel oxidation catalyst and a selective catalytic reduction and particle
filter. Alternatively customers in lower regulated markets have additional engine versions and equipment levels to choose from. The machines’ operating weight is up to 25.5 tonnes. To cover a maximally large application range, various blade versions (straight, semi-U and 6 way blade) with capacities from 4.10 to 5.56 m³ as well as many rear equipment options are offered. DIGGERS & DOZERS
WHAT’S MY RIDE? The Thinking Man’s Digger Driver The first-ever guest on the new Diggers and Dozers audio podcast provides some fantastic insight into the world of the machine operator, the challenges they face and the machines they like to drive. Diggers and Dozers reports.
What did you want to be Q when you were growing up?
A
One of the primary reasons for starting the new Diggers and Dozers podcast (see page 00) was to provide a platform from which machine operators can share their thoughts, ideas and concerns. With that in mind, one of the first shows on the new podcast platform – What’s My Ride – is not just FOR equipment operators; it actually FEATURES equipment operators. The first ever gest on What’s My Ride is self-employed and selffunded excavator operator (and regular podcast consumer) Nigel Williams. You can listen to the full episode here (https://tinyurl.com/rpb75u5) but the following Q&A captures some of the show’s highlights.
I wanted to be a fisherman. But the finishing industry was dying thanks to the Common Fisheries Policy that came in as part of the Maastricht Treaty. So I decided to go into agriculture. It was a very good fit for me and I got my National Certificate in Agriculture. The problem was that – under the terms of the Agricultural Wages Board – I was classified as an agricultural architect, which made me one of the most expensive people to employ on a farm. I was coming to the end of the season working on the farm when I heard that a local earthworks company was looking for a dumptruck driver. I met up with the manager of the company and, just a few days later, I was driving a Volvo A25 ADT.
What is the best machine you Q have operated? A
Absolutely, hands-down a Komatsu PC450. It was just everything. It was just a standard machine but I could do everything with her.
If you could operate any Q machine in the world, what would it be?
A
A Volvo EC235R, short radius with a two-piece boom, short stick and an Engcon tilt rotator and a blade. It is just such a versatile machine. You have great reach and great dig depth.
50
What do you think of all the Q systems, gadgets and devices designed – supposedly – to make the operator’s life easier?
A
I am a very big tech fan. I love technology. But it has its place alongside a good operator; the same with tilt rotators and tilting buckets. They’re all good aids but you need a good man in the seat to begin with. You could have the best machine in the world, the best attachments and the best driver aids. But without a man in the seat who understands it all and can make it work, you may as well pack up and go home.
If you could change one thing Q about the industry, what would it be?
A
The attitude towards the men on site and the thought that men are expendable.
Q What is your ride? A
I am currently operating a Kobelco SK180N-8. It’s a phenomenal machine. Great reach and really well built. I like everything about it. It is fast, powerful and smooth. If you put it in heavy dig mode, it will dig a house out. My only issue with it is that it doesn’t have a retractable seat belt. It’s the only thing that annoys me about it.
