It is clear now that the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing economic fallout will have a devastating effect upon equipment sales in 2020. Most manufacturers are predicting sizeable falls in output and profit and – at the time of writing – the press releases announcing manufacturer redundancies outweigh those announcing new machines.

Liebherr Upgrades Wheelies Liebherr has announced a number of improvements to two compact wheeled excavators as part of the changeover to the new Stage V exhaust emissions standard. The A 910 Compact Litronic and A 912 Compact Litronic wheeled excavators are the two smallest models in the Liebherr Compact range. The A 910 Compact has an operating weight from 12,100 to 13,100 kg and an engine power of 85 kW. The A 912 Compact is the next biggest machine with an operating weight from 13,000 to 14,200 kg and an engine power of 90 kW.

The 4-cylinder in-line engine installed in both compact wheeled excavators is very environmentally friendly with its low fuel consumption. Liebherr Power Efficiency also ensures optimal efficiency of the drive components in the new Compact wheeled excavators in every work situation. It enables machine operation in the range of the lowest specific fuel usage for lower consumption and greater efficiency with the same performance. In order to observe the strict statutory emissions standards of Stage V, at Liebherr the latest engine technology is used: the innovative exhaust emission control system combines a diesel oxidation catalyst and a diesel particulate filter with a SCR catalytic converter for the reduction of particles and nitrogen oxide for optimal protection of people and the environment against exhaust gas pollutants. In the course of the changeover to the new Stage V exhaust emissions standard, the counterweight for the A 910 Compact and A 912 Compact was increased. With the heavier counterweight, the two compact wheeled excavators impress with higher lift capacities of around 100 kg with maximum jib length. At the same time, the heavier counterweight ensures enhanced stability of the compact
wheeled excavators, which also results in greater stability during dynamic movements. In order to further increase stability, the two compact wheeled excavators are available with different supports. The sturdy and radially guided stabiliser blade serves as the ideal stability aid on soft and sandy ground thanks to the large contact area. On solid ground, outriggers provide optimal stability. With the individual control an alignment of the Compact wheeled excavator, particularly on uneven terrain, is possible. Also for applications on uneven terrain, the split blade support is also suitable thanks to the individually or jointly controllable blade elements. The stabiliser blade, outriggers and split blade are available in different combinations. Some of the biggest challenges for machine operators in urban areas are the confined spatial conditions on construction sites. Liebherr compact wheeled excavators are designed with reduced tail swing for such applications. The tail swing for the two Compact wheeled excavators is only 1,675 mm. In addition, the front swing radius was reduced by another 70 mm so that the entire envelope circle is under 5,000 mm for both machines. Despite the compact machine dimensions, the A 910 / A 912 Compact machines have high digging forces, also in hard ground. Liebherr Compact wheeled excavators can therefore be used universally on every construction site. The optional all-wheel steering and crab steering offer significantly increased manoeuvrability and flexibility, especially for work in city centre areas and in confined spaces. With the all-wheel steering the steering lock of the front and rear axles is effected in the opposite direction so that only a very small turning radius is needed during steering. In crab steering the steering lock of the front and rear axles is effected in the same direction so that the machine can move sideways.

Cat Takes Command Caterpillar is again hitting a significant milestone in autonomous haulage—achieving 2.0 billion tonnes hauled using Cat MineStar Command for hauling. Caterpillar has doubled the amount hauled in the 16 months since reaching 1.0 billon tonnes hauled in November 2018. “In just a bit over six years we’ve safely hauled two billion tonnes—a milestone we achieved significantly faster than our competitors,” says Sean McGinnis, MineStar Solutions product manager. “This milestone makes Command for hauling the most productive commercially available solution, and it’s something mining people are noticing.” Since commercially launching Command for hauling in 2013, Caterpillar has continued to improve the speed of implementation. “We’re launching Command on more sites and implementing it more quickly, so more of our customers can experience the safety and productivity gains that autonomous hauling delivers,” McGinnis continues.
He credits input from Caterpillar customers for the success of Command for hauling. “One of the reasons that Caterpillar has been so successful in expanding Command and delivering results is because we listen to and partner with our customers. They identify features, functionality, and even the autonomous truck models they need for their operations.” Over the last six years, MineStar Solutions has also continued to grow its expertise in autonomous operations—not only in hauling but also with autonomous dozers, drills and underground loaders. “The skills and knowledge of our MineStar team are unmatched in the industry,” says John Deselem, global autonomy operations manager. “Beyond getting better at implementing the system, we’ve become trusted advisors for mine sites looking to take advantage of what autonomy makes possible. We listen to their needs, then work together to build the ideal solution for their mine.” To date, Caterpillar has 276 autonomous trucks in operation – and counting. “The push toward

autonomous mining doesn’t show any signs of slowing,” says McGinnis. “We have projects in the works with a number of large mining companies either looking to expand their current autonomous haulage operations or implement new ones.” The Caterpillar autonomous fleet is made up of Cat 789D, 793D, 793F and 797F trucks, as well as a fleet of Komatsu 930Es. The Cat 794 AC electric-drive autonomous truck will be ready for autonomous haulage later this year. Command equipped trucks have driven over 67.6 million kilometers (42.0 million miles) without a lost-time injury. “Command for hauling has proven its value to mining customers,” McGinnis concludes. “That value is reflected in the rate at which the Cat autonomous fleet achieved this milestone. The fleet is growing quickly and production continues to climb as mining companies benefit from greater truck productivity, increased truck utilization, consistent truck operation, and reduced costs.”

Kobelco Targets Mid-Range Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe B.V. (KCME) has announced the introduction of the SK130LC-11; a Japanese-manufactured excavator that will compete in the 12-14 tonne operating segment. This new machine is powered by an IsuzuMotors Ltd R-4JJ1XDDV-A01 turbocharged diesel engine that features SCR (DEF) and DPF systems and is emissions Stage V compliant. Mechanical power output for the 2,999 cc engine is rated at 78.5 kW to deliver strong work performance, including a best in class drawbar pulling force of 141 kN and a high-rated bucket digging force of 105.4kN. Together with its balanced chassis layout, the SK130LC-11 provides exceptional lifting capability and stability.
An optional 600 kg counterbalance weight, plus dozer and a dual-boom options are available to order. The SK130LC-11 design includes a thoroughly modern and spacious cabin that features intuitive, easy-to-use operating controls and systems not unlike today’s premium automobiles. A 10-inch colour monitor – the largest in-cab visual information screen within the excavator industry – provides easily accessible and programmable menu functions, machine status information and provides clear rear and right-side views from the standard-fit upper deck cameras. An LED back-lit multifunction jog-type dial is the access point to all monitor functions. LED
backlighting is also standard on all control switches. A revised hydraulic system promotes smooth hydraulic control in conjunction with shorter and horizontal control lever movements. This design alleviates stress and tension of the operator’s fingers, wrist and arm, while at the same time providing precise control movement. The new Kobelco-branded Grammar seat provides posture adjustment for operator comfort over a full working day. To combat working in high temperatures, an air-con system maintains the desired cabin temperature by way of two main cooling ducts (positioned at the rear of the cabin) and sub-ducts for an even flow of controlled airflow. Modern technology features throughout the SK130LC-11 and is geared for ease of use, which raises work efficiency. Seven preset hydraulic attachment modes (e.g. bucket, nibbler, tilt rotator and breaker etc.) can be accessed via the master jog-dial and onscreen selection modes. This system ensures a greater range of working versatility and the correct hydraulic performance is delivered to suit the working task. Furthermore, four customisable modes are available and can be pre-set by service engineers to extend the range of hydraulic operations for additional machine roles. Quick Hitch hydraulic piping is fitted as standard. Previous roof guards have always been rigid mounted for safety and security. However, this latest roof guard features a swing-open door section so the external roof glass can now be easily cleaned for visibility without reducing its structural integrity. Other areas under the design spotlight include repositioning the safety valve on the cylinder arm to further minimise the risk of accidental contact with site obstacles, and the mounting lug dimensions on the standard bucket have been uprated to suit the available digging force. A large fuel tank of 280 litre capacity reduces refuelling downtime and includes a fuel cap that meets

Yanmar Wheels Out New Model Yanmar Compact Equipment EMEA has unveiled the next generation of its class-leading B75W wheeled excavator. The B75W-5 is said to be perfect for urban sites, highway construction and landscaping projects. Powered by the latest 54.4 kW Yanmar 4TNV98CT turbocharged diesel engine with DPF as standard, the B75W-5 is fuel efficient, environmentally friendly and fully-compliant with EU Stage V emissions legislation. Delivering 295.5Nm torque at 1,365 rpm, the new model is extremely powerful (despite its compact dimensions) and can reach travel speeds of up to 36 km/h. Under normal circumstances, we would not normally report on a backhoe loader as it is not a demolition machine in the truest sense. However, the new “Project Zeus” machine from CASE is the world;’s first electric-powered backhoe. And by extending the reach of electric power from mini excavators and other compact machines into something like a backhoe, it does afford a possible glimpse of an emissions-free future. The power and performance of the 580 EV is equivalent to other diesel-powered backhoes in the CASE product line and provides considerably lower daily operating costs while also producing zero emissions — a motivating factor for utility and government contractors incentivized to work with equipment that leverages alternative fuels and lowers emissions.

XCMG’s Blue Boy If you had told me as I headed for Las Vegas that one of the stand-out machines on display would be a Chinese-manufactured, electricpowered compact excavator, I would probably have laughed. Hard. For a long time. However, having seen the world turned upside-down first by a global pandemic that sent people rushing into their homes, and then by Black Lives Matter protests that sent people rushing out of them, a highly advanced electric excavator hailing from China suddenly seems almost normal.
The XE35U-E - or “Blue Boy” as it’s affectionately called - is a very smart-looking machine with a snazzy blue and black finish. The XCMG name across the back illuminates in a futuristic blue when the machine is working, lending it a “Tron” feel. The unit has an operating weight of 4,200 kg, a bucket capacity of 0.12 m3, a boom length of 2.56 metres, an engine power equivalent to 22 kW. Charging time is under six hours and this is said to provide a 12-hour operational work time between charges. As a battery-driven, all-
electric machine, the Blue Boy is whisper-quiet. This is not the world’s first electric-powered mini excavator. So what makes the XE35U-E such a show-stopper? Well, in my opinion, this is the machine with which Chinese machines truly came of age. I have sat in a multitude of Chinesebuilt excavators over recent years. I have operated (badly) one or two in that time as well. And, to varying degrees, all of them have been reminiscent of the first wave of excavators and minis to arrive from Japan more than a quarter of a century ago. They were all a bit square, a bit rough around the edges, and a bit lacking in the finesse and finish you would expect from a machine built for a Western audience. Cabs felt undersized, the seating seemingly designed for maximum back pain and discomfort. As the likes of LiuGong and Sany have made inroads into Europe and the UK, these issues have been addressed. But the Blue Boy raises the stakes even further. Although I was unable to operate the machine during ConExpo, I did manage to get into the cab. And it is a revelation.

It’s comfortable, roomy, and offers heating, air conditioning, seat belts, cup holders, backup power, and a dashboard with a bright visual display that also monitors the entire machine’s status in realtime to ensure high performance and worry-free maintenance alerts. XCMG is keen to point out that the “Blue Boy” is not a prototype but a real product that is commercially available right now. To date, machines built in China have been met – initially, at least – with a degree of resistance; a fact that will not have been helped by a post-Coronavirus backlash. But the Blue Boy could be just the machine to change both hearts and minds.

Liebherr presented four wheel loaders at ConExpo including an L 566 XPower that is equipped with numerous new assistance systems. These include active personnel detection, adaptive working lighting, the integrated tire pressure monitoring system and the weighing system with Truck
Payload Assist. The L 566 XPower also has the new joystick steering for wheel loaders. Liebherr installs a power-split travel drive as standard in all large XPower wheel loaders. It combines the hydrostatic drive, which is ideal for short loading cycles with

Plantforce Launches E-learning Platform With construction slowly returning to work, most companies will be under massive pressure to find new ways of delivering already established services. Government guidelines on social distancing means to work even remotely similarly to how we did just 10 weeks ago is becoming ever more challenging. Furthermore, companies will be looking for new ways to increase productivity and help claw back lost time. In construction, a week’s downtime can have enormous cost implications amongst other costs. One of these new ways to assist in cost reduction and maximising production will be GPS machine control. This technology often

that when operators attend the training centre, their backgrounds and skill levels are so varied that training in basic operation becomes the main focus, thus not being able to fully utilise the advanced machine control solutions we have on offer at the centre. This in turn is doubling the course duration in order to get the right amount of knowledge across for operators, for them to then be comfortable with using the technology on-site. This new online-based offering is the perfect structured solution for helping the industry return to work with a better knowledge base. It also allows the operator to

Once a candidate completes the online basic introduction, they will arrive at the stage two, the more technical and hands on element. By introducing a “basics course”, Plantforce has created a process that ensures the candidates attending stage 2 are of an equal knowledgeable understanding. This allows Plantforce to reduce the course duration, saving time and money. This also better utilises the learning equipment on offer, streamlining the whole process from start to finish. The second section of the course is also free but hosted at Weston College. This stage contains a simulation of the machine control interfaces, along with a 4hrs practical session on the relevant machine, practicing what they have already learned. This culminates in a test with a pass or fail at the end.

Blazing a Trail A new Trailblazer Apprenticeship for Construction Plant Operatives has now been approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) and is being finalised for delivery to industry. This follows over three years’ development work by an employer-led Trailblazer working group supported by the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA). The working group was first formed in July 2016 to develop a new apprenticeship for those that operate plant and equipment. The working group, chaired by Patrick Flannery from P Flannery Plant Hire, consists of employers representing construction equipment owners and hirers, including those from the demolition, rail and extractives sectors, as well as clients and training providers. The new Trailblazer Apprenticeship for Plant Operatives is set at Level 2 and learning will place over a 15
month period using four machines - an excavator, dumper or dump truck, forklift and ride-on roller. The content includes learning on operator-level servicing and basic maintenance techniques, as well as the marshalling of plant, providing apprentices with an overall understanding of plant operations and supporting activities. The majority of learning will be undertaken within the workplace, although there is a requirement to have at least 20% learning ‘off the job’ The last function of the Trailblazer working group was the development of the assessment plan - the methodology and requirements to effectively measure the skills, knowledge and behaviours (KSBs) required for the apprenticeship. The devised assessment process includes a number of practical activities on each machine type, including preparation checks as well as a marshalling activity, a test of technical knowledge through a multi-choice testing format and a professional discussion supported

by a work record book that needs completing in the workplace. Final approval of the assessment plan has now been granted by the IfATE, meaning that the core of the development work has been completed and the working group can prepare the apprenticeship for delivery to industry. This would normally involve a launch event but this is being reviewed in light of current circumstances regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic Patrick Flannery, Chair of the working group said: “After many years of developing this apprenticeship, we’re pleased to have passed the final hurdle in getting the assessment plan approved. This means that we can now prepare the apprenticeship for delivery. “I’d like to thank the members of working group for their unstinting devotion, input and time to get this apprenticeship though to fruition, coping admirably with the frustrations and issues of the development phase. It is a measure of their support that we now have an exciting apprenticeship to offer to the plant sector. More than ever, we need to attract new talent and we hope industry will support our efforts and take up this important apprenticeship.”

A14 Ahead of Schedule
Leading construction and infrastructure player Aggregate Industries, working in collaboration with the A14 Integrated Delivery Team, has completed all major works on one of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects - Highways England’s A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme. The improved road officially opened for traffic on 5th May - eight months ahead of the scheduled opening date. Negotiating the supply of material and installation of such a major infrastructure project was a significant achievement for Aggregate Industries’ Asphalt and Contracting teams. In total, over 1.6 million square metres of road was constructed and surfaced, and
10 kilometres of non-motorised user pathways created. This required more than 730,000 tonnes of asphalt to be manufactured at a purposebuilt plant on site and laid to an industry-leading standard, along with in excess of 550,000 tonnes of low-carbon cement bound granular mixture (CBGM), manufactured on a mobile cementitious mixing plant by SiteBatch. These plants played a crucial role in minimising the carbon footprint of the scheme as deliveries were made on-site, requiring less vehicle movements on the Strategic Road Network. In addition, Aggregate Industries transported the aggregate used in its asphalt mixes by rail, further reducing its environmental impact.

To satisfy stringent noise restrictions where the scheme passes through built-up areas, Aggregate Industries utilised its unique ultra-low noise asphalt, 10 mm SuperThin. This reduces noise levels by 7.8db(A) when compared with traditional hot rolled asphalt (HRA). “The early opening of the A14 to traffic is a monumental achievement. It is testament to the collaboration of all teams involved that we have delivered the UK’s largest, most prestigious infrastructure project to date in such good time, whilst meeting the highest safety standards,” says Paddy Murphy, Managing Director of Contracting at Aggregate Industries. “We’re also delighted that amongst the disruption caused by the coronavirus outbreak, we were able to continue to work safely by adopting stringent measures and sticking to social distancing guidelines. The resulting road ensures that deliveries of vital supplies and key workers will be able to reach their destination.” Around 200 workers from Aggregate Industries were involved in this infrastructure improvement scheme and, over the course of the project, not a single lost-time injury was sustained by the workforce. “We demonstrated our commitment to the rapid and successful completion of this project when we invested in an asphalt plant solely dedicated to the A14. It is brilliant to see that this commitment has paid off, concludes Chris Hudson, Managing Director of Asphalt at Aggregate Industries. “With the new, improved A14 up and running so far ahead of schedule, it will be a great boost to the local community.”

Komatsu’s New Rigid Rig Komatsu Europe has announced the launch of the new HD785-8 Rigid Dump Truck. “The new HD785-8 proposes excellent operator comfort, great travel performance and the wellknown Komatsu reliability of the previous model,” says Juuso Ahola, Product Manager at Komatsu Europe. “This new machine is such a pleasure to operate that you just might want to keep the keys at the end of your shift rather than hand them over to the next operator.” Built for mining and quarry applications, the HD785-8 has a powerful EU Stage V Komatsu SAA12V140E-7 engine developing 849 kW together with a payload capacity of 92.2 tonnes.
Fluid (DEF), or AdBlue, is not required. Key machine metrics for utilization, production and machine health can be accessed remotely via the KOMTRAX telematics system or on the machine through the upgraded machine monitor. The HD785-8 has a 7-speed, fully automatic transmission with two selectable reverse speeds. The Komatsu Advanced Transmission with Optimum Modulation Control System (K-ATOMiCS) ensures smooth

Everglades Ever More The construction of the C-43 water reservoir is part of the giant hydrological restoration project taking place in the Everglades. Dozens of Volvo CE machines are on site building the reservoir, set to be ready in 2023. Watch the whole story in the new episode of The Megaproject Listing: Restoring the Everglades.
Since 1882, the Everglades have been drained for farming and it is now half the size it was a century ago. But that’s changing. One of largest ecosystem restoration projects in the U.S. in currently underway. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan began 20 years ago and is a giant hydrological restoration project consisting of, among other things, the build of a new basin storage reservoir in the Caloosahatchee estuary, called the C-43 water reservoir project. When complete the reservoir, which is spread over 40km2, will hold excess water from a nearby lake, where it
will be treated and then released during the dry season. In total the dam will be able to hold 200 billion litres of water. Working on a construction project virtually the size of Manhattan comes with its share of dilemmas. And the hundreds of canals that have to be navigated during both rainy and dry seasons, pose even more challenges. Massimo Bugliosi, Project Director with Lane Construction-Salini Impregilo, is the one in charge of solving these issues. He says preparation is essential and relies on the dependable performance

There are currently 42 Volvo CE machines working on the construction of the C-43 water reservoir in the Everglades – part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. “The key is planning and properly sequencing activities in the right way, and the equipment must be versatile – Volvo machine are up to the challenge,” he says. Currently, there are 42 machines from Volvo CE working on the

C-43 water reservoir project. This includes a mix of A45 articulated haulers, and EC750E 75-ton excavators– with more on the way. “We chose to use Volvo equipment, because it is versatile and can handle the mixes of different kinds of soil,” explains Massimo Bugliosi. Another challenge is something that no-one can rule over. The weather in South Florida can be rough and unpredictable – not to mention hurricanes coming to visit annually. Stage V Kramers Kramer has announced that its 5035 and 5040 wheel loaders are now Stage V compliant and benefit from changed power ratings. The well-known 5035, which has an 18.5 kilowatt Yanmar engine, a bucket tipping load of 1,140 kilogrammes and an operating weight of 1,920 kilogrammes. The new 5040 model, meanwhile, is an all wheel steer loader equipped with a 28.5 kilowatt Yanmar engine. The machine has a higher operating weight at 2,070 kilogrammes, in addition to a bucket tipping load of 1,400 kilogrammes. Both models possess a completely new cab design, as well as some modern comfort features and power options. Both of the 5-series models are compact and manoeuvrable wheel loaders. With their dimensions, they are predestined for low clearance heights and tight passages, therefore an indispensable companion for the construction industry. With a width of just 1.26 metres, journeys on the foot path are effortless. In addition to this, due to their low transport weight, it is possible
to transport the machines on a car trailer; a quick run over to a different area of application is therefore not a problem. The machines are built on a new framework concept that enables enormous manoeuvrability whilst remaining stable. The three types of steering also provide a plus in terms of flexibility. The all-wheel steering in the series continues to favour maximum manoeuvrability and fast loading cycles in the tightest of spaces. This is complemented by the optional steering types: front wheel and crab steering, which are available for the first time for this class size. Crab steering is perfectly suited to all works along trenches, walls and hedges. This type of steering not only enables movement around obstacles, but keeps the consistent working distance parallel, thereby ensuring a lower risk of damage. The simple and quick switch between all-wheel, front wheel and crab steering occurs via a mechanical steering type changeover. A perfect service access with two tanks; as a result of this: the excellent distribution of

weight and stability, as well as the modern cab design, have set new standards in the compact wheel loader-segment, these in turn ensure the additional benefit of comfort and operator-friendliness, whereby functionality and ergonomics are at the forefront. The wide entry includes additional steps, thus ensuring a comfortable and above all safe entry and exit. The optionally available, tilt-adjusting steering column is likewise helpful in this and also enables the individual steering adjustment for the operator. of the three newly-developed operator modes (Smart Driving PRO) is seamlessly possible and optionally available with the 5040 model. The new 5040 wheel loader model is equipped with a 28.5 kilowatt / 38.8 HP Yanmar engine as standard. The exhaust aftertreatment is carried out by DOC and DPF. Smart Driving PRO is also optionally available for the all wheel steer loader. This is a new feature with three different operator modes that support and relieve the operator in the respective applications whilst being fuel-efficient. In the Power Mode the complete engine output is available. This provides an ideal basis for fast loading cycles and also for work in excavated material. In comparison to the Power Mode, the machine drives the same travel speed in Eco Mode with a reduced engine
speed. With the aim to reduce the noise level and to save fuel, this operator mode is above all suitable for stacking work in which the full system power is not required. The third operator mode presents a further development of the known “Low-Speed Control� option. This is operated via the accelerator pedal. Thus when the engine speed is freely adjustable, the forward travel speed can not only be controlled via the handset control but also comfortably and sensitively using the accelerator. This operator mode is best suited for application with attachments, such as a rotary sweeper or a mower. In doing so, the speed can be most sensitively adjusted to changing situations using the accelerator pedal. This means more flexibility and safety for the operator. A fast change between the three mentioned operator modes is now available at the simple press of a button.

The quick coupler system continues as standard for efficient work when frequently changing attachments. The large lift and tearout force, in addition to a precise parallel guidance throughout the total height can be achieved through the loader unit with Z-kinematics. Excavaciones Rafael Gómez, based at Cos in Cantabria in Spain, has purchased a new Doosan DX235LCR-5 reduced radius excavator. The company works mainly in the forestry sector but also in public works, earthmoving and constructing breakwaters. The company regularly carries out work for a large local forestry company that supplies wood to pulp, mining and sawmill companies from fast-growing woodland stands, including eucalyptus and pine along the
Cantabrian coast. Excavaciones Rafael Gómez also works locally for various official departments of the Cantabrian government as well as contracts in neighbouring communities such as Asturias or the Basque Country, and even in Castilla León. “My company is specialized in the forestry sector, in land preparation, cleaning, clearing and access to forest plantations. Once the trees in the mountains are cut down, their remains must be cleared out, with the debris stacked for removal or

for crushing,” says owner, Rafael Gómez Rivero. He added: “In the mountains, a machine cannot fail on you - it is not the same as when you work in the centre of a city. According to Rafael Gómez Rivero, he chose this specific model because of its short turning radius, which makes it a perfect excavator for working in tight places. He has used other machines that did not allow him to travel or work as easily. The Doosan DX235LCR-5 excavator does much more in confined spaces, and with the dozer blade, the operator can also do the work of a small bulldozer. The articulated arm on the DX235LCR-5 allows the boom and bucket to be brought very close to the machine, which is a key feature for the forestry sector and also provides the digging force to work in stony ground. Rafael Gómez Rivero added: “In the Doosan DX235LCR-5 excavator, I would highlight the turning force it has - the turning torque and turning force are very high. It means that travelling on slopes with a loaded bucket and turning the stones on the breakwaters with a bucket are no problem for this model. There is a lot of strength and stability in the tracks - it climbs all kinds of terrain without problem. “Colleagues and friends who are using Doosan machines have recommended them to me for their reliability. They have Doosan machines in this area that have worked for over 20,000 hours with no problems. And that is essential for me and for other contractors in the sector. The Bounce Back Starts Here The role of the construction industry in the midst of a pandemic has been widely contested. Social distancing regulations have made many people apprehensive about the gradual reopening of the construction sector, but if this is done in a safe and secure way, this industry will play an essential role in the recovery of the UK economy. As 2019 came to an end, the construction industry was going from strength to strength. This period of growth helped to balance the relative declines in other sectors (including retail and manufacturing). At this time, the construction industry contributed up to six per cent of the UK’s GDP, seven per cent of jobs, and thirteen per cent of businesses. The average salary in the industry was rising, as was the output of the construction industry. In December 2019, overall output was up by 3.8 per cent in comparison with December 2018 according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

On the 10th of May, Boris Johnson’s lockdown update encouraged anyone who couldn’t work from home to return to work, quashing any doubt about the fact that construction work should continue. So, while the industry works to gradually rebuild itself, let’s explore more closely how firms can operate in a safe way and bounce back to their previous productivity levels. Although there was no definitive guidance for construction sites to close during lockdown, many of them chose to pause operations while the most severe stages of lockdown were underway. Most construction sites will be used to the mothballing process after shutting down sites during Christmas breaks, but extra precaution should also be taken as sites begin to reopen.

When reopening a construction site or adapting one that has remained operational throughout the lockdown, worker safety should be the number one priority. Social distancing can be difficult on a construction site, but if you implement practical new safety measures, they’ll soon become commonplace and high levels of productivity can resume once again. According to statements announced in a recent webinar hosted by RICS, there are multiple ways to ensure the safety of your workers when they return to the construction site: • Provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to each member of your workforce. • Distance your cabins farther apart than usual. • Stagger your employees’ starting times to avoid a rush at a certain time of day. • Install extra washing points and make hygiene equipment such as hand sanitisers readily available. • Employ a social distance coordinator on your site. These are certainly daunting times for the construction industry, but history tells us that construction will play an important role in rebuilding our economy. Many have compared the current situation to wartime, both in our collective response and in the economic impact. In the aftermath of the Second World War, construction flourished and the 1950s and 1960s are often referred to as a ‘Golden Age’ for the industry.
