DIGGERS & DOZERS
Never Content Just over a year ago, I published a book entitled Renaissance: Why JCB is the Apple of the digger world. In it, I described the similarities between the UK construction equipment giant, and that behemoth of the tech sector; how both had developed a knack for taking an existing idea and making it better, cooler and sexier. The machine that prompted that book was the JCB Hydradig which rewrote the wheeled excavator rule book whilst simultaneously making British excavator users – including many long-time rubber duck sceptics – sit up and take notice. JCB did it again with its innovative Hi Viz dumper, and – to a degree – with both the Telskid skid steer and – most recently – with the X Series hydraulic excavators. But, while it may not have the same universal appeal, there is another new product emerging from the JCB World Headquarters; and it is one that has the potential to be perhaps the biggest game changer of the lot. During its recent international press gathering, the company unveiled its first-ever electric powered compact excavator (see page 36). Now electric excavators are nothing new. Wacker Neuson lifted the veil on one just last year; and those operating in the demolition arena will be familiar with the electric-powered Brokk demolition robot. What makes the JCB 19C-1 E-TEC special, however, are two key factors. For one thing, the JCB machine features a lithium ion battery that delivers power without tethering the machine to a generator or external power pack via a long and cumbersome umbilical cable. But what truly sets the new E-TEC machine aside is the manufacturer itself. JCB is at its best when producing machines in large volumes. Sure, it is very adept at producing long reach excavators for drainage applications; it is a recognised producer of high reach excavators for demolition work; and the custom machines it builds for military applications redefine the term “specialist”. But where it excels is in producing tens of thousands of machines that are identical down to the last bolt and washer. For a volume manufacturer to throw its hat into the electricpowered excavator market is significant because it marks the point at which the electric excavator switches from being an interesting novelty to being a mainstream product. It is early days, or course. And one excavator does not a revolution make. But make no mistake, for all the excitement about the new X Series machines, it is the new JCB 19C-1 E-TEC that is the real game changer. You can purchase a copy of Renaissance: Why JCB is the Apple of the digger world exclusively on Amazon: http://amzn. eu/3lsUizf

JCB Has X Factor
DIGGERS & DOZERS
Four years in development, the new excavators benefit from a significant focus on the operator environment. The cab is a completely new structure, which will be used across the X series range. It is 100 mm longer and a full one metre wide, making it 15 percent larger overall than on previous machines. That probably doesn’t sound like much. But I’ve sat in an X Series machine and I was disappointed when I had to return to my car. The cab incorporates the ROPS frame within the structure and has flat glazing all round. Most impressively, the 220X boasts an incredibly low 68dB(A) noise level inside the operator’s cab, down from 73dB(A) on the previous generation.
JCB has unveiled the first model in its all-new lineup of hydraulic excavators.
Three options of an all-new seat developed with supplier Grammer provide maximum comfort, with heating and ventilation among the options. The flat floor is easy to keep clean and even the rubber mat has been redesigned to assist with sweeping out. To the right-hand side of the operator is an all-new command pod, bringing together all switches and controls into a single seatmounted unit. A 7” tilt-adjustable monitor has been provided with intuitive menus and functionality. The monitor is accessed through an automotive-style rotary controller. The foot pedals, foot rests and tracking levers have also been redesigned to provide increased comfort, while the machines can be supplied factory-prepared for GPS excavation guidance, tilt-rotator and autolube if required. The new 20-tonne class excavators herald a robust new appearance

that will be carried throughout the range. Designed and built to work efficiently and profitably, with durability and reliability throughout every strand of their DNA, the excavators have an upperstructure that is now a full 2.7 metre wide, 200 mm broader than their predecessors.
under a separate cover, to prevent crosscontamination and to make it easier to refill. While much of the last decade has – for all manufacturers – put engine development at the centre of the engineers’ brief, the stability of Tier 4 Final and Stage IV legislation has allowed the team to expand its remit for the new models. The company has stayed with proven Kawasaki hydraulic pumps and Kayaba valves, but has opted for larger spools and a latest generation valve block for reduced hydraulic losses. The diameter of the main hydraulic hose to and from the main hydraulic valve has increased in diameter from 1925 mm, giving greater flow without increasing the speed of the oil. Maintaining the speed of the oil in increased diameter hoses, results in less wear and tear and therefore increases hose life.
The additional space has allowed JCB’s designers to mount the main boom in the centre of the machine, rather than at an offset. This reduces stress on the slew bearing and provides increased accuracy for the operator when trenching. It also permits the use of larger buckets without impacting the tracks. A pronounced skirt circles the upperstructure, providing a strong, yet easily repairable profile to protect the new doors. All tanks are now mounted inside the bodywork, to further reduce the risk of damage and even the counterweight has been designed to prevent knocks. There is easy access to a large tool box, with integral refuelling pump with filter, while the AdBlue tank is positioned
Though the boom and arm are unchanged, JCB will offer the option of boom float with two modes to make grading easier and to reduce stress when operating a hydraulic breaker. The bucket ram will

be available with an optional hose burst check valve and the grease points in the boom and arm have been grouped together to reduce service time. JCB has undertaken the design and engineering of the new 20-tonne machines with quality and durability at the heart of every operation. The company benchmarked all leading competitors and collected more than 1,000 requirements from customers around the world. The team spent four years honing the excavators, to make them both simple to operate and simple to service. “Every detail of these excavators has been examined and perfected, to provide maximum durability and reliability in operation. But more than that, we have made it easier for the operator and for the service technician, reducing downtime for the customer and boosting profitability,” concludes JCB’s Tim Burnhope. “The 220X heralds the arrival of a new generation of JCB excavators that will provide many years of faithful service across the world.”

Your Time to Shine The first-ever British Demolition Awards ceremony is taking place later this year. And it is time that your achievements and accomplishments were recognised. On 20th July 2018, the UK’s premier demolition movers and shakers will gather at the world-famous Belfry Hotel & Resort in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands for the inaugural British Demolition Awards. More than a year in the making, these awards have been designed and developed to recognise for the first time the accomplishments and achievements of some of the finest demolition minds in the world. Furthermore, the awards have been created to throw the spotlight onto several important roles within the demolition field that are all-too-often overlooked. The categories for the British Demolition Awards are as follows: • • • • • • • • •
Demolition Innovation (equipment, systems, software etc) Training Innovation Safety Innovation Environment Innovation Tender Submission of the Year Risk Assessment/Method Statement of the Year Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Demolition Contract of the Year Demolition Contractor of the Year
that the entire British demolition industry received the recognition it so richly deserves,” says Ben Chambers, managing director of Chambers Media Ltd, the publisher of Demolition magazine. “We also thought it was about time that some of the key roles within the sector received some credit as well. Not everyone in the industry wears a hard hat every day, but that doesn’t mean that their contribution is any less valuable and important.” This is a view that is echoed by Demolition magazine editor and DemolitionNews.com founder, Mark Anthony. “From the outset, I wanted these awards to be truly independent and unlike anything else in the industry,” he says. “I wanted the awards to be open to everyone in the industry, not just the big-name contractors and their directors. Furthermore, the judging will be 100% independent of the magazine and website. For these awards to have any credibility whatsoever, it is vital that the winners are selected on merit, not because they’re a member of a trade association or because they spend a lot on advertising. In short, if you’re in the UK demolition industry and if you’re good enough, you could be walking away with a trophy.”
“The UK demolition industry is a recognised global leader in its field and we thought it was about time
The British Demolition Awards will be open for entries from Monday 12 February, closing Thursday 31 May 2018. Look out for further updates on DemolitionNews.com and on our various social media feeds.

Kinshofer X Lock KINSHOFER, one of the world’s leading sources of high-quality excavator and loader crane attachments, offers the X-LOCK Coupler, a safe and quick solution for exchanging excavator attachments on the jobsite.
The tool allows the operator to exchange attachments safely from within the cab and features a wedge-locking principal, which allows the coupler to connect to the attachment in two separate places, where competitors only feature one locking point. The X-LOCK Coupler easily pairs with buckets, rippers, rakes and mechanical grabs as well as a wide variety of demolition, recycling and railroad attachments. “The X-LOCK Coupler is the safest solution available when it comes to changing excavator attachments,” says Francois Martin, KINSHOFER North America general manager. “The various safety and design features — which are KINSHOFER exclusive— allow operators to make attachment exchanges from the cab. This ensures safety while speeding up the exchange process, resulting in enhanced ROI.”
14
Unlike the competition, the wedge-locking principal connects the coupler to the attachment in two separate places and provides a two-and-a-half-fold locking force compared to a pendular jaw quick hitch. This constant applied working pressure continuously readjusts the wedge, keeping both pins firmly against the quick hitch. Two pressure relief valves operate the wedge, which locks at 1,730 psi and unlocks at 3,455 psi. This ensures the hydraulic circuit is not over pressurised and greatly minimises wear in the locking area between the coupler and the attachment. A rear lock safety device ensures the wedge does not retract and disconnect the attachment if hydraulic failure occurs. Additional safety features within the X-LOCK Coupler allow the operator to connect and disconnect safely from within the cab. When connecting, the X-LOCK

manage the system and prevent highly hazardous situations by alerting if the attachment is not properly attached. KINSHOFER designed the X-LOCK Coupler to prevent serious accidents on the jobsite. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has documented numerous incidents, some of which have resulted in fatalities, caused from improperly attached or failing buckets.
When disconnecting, the operator unlocks the selfadjusting wedge from the rear pin and unlocks the safety knuckle from the front pin. The coupler is now ready to be removed from the attachment. If the attachment is not fully detached within five to 12 seconds, the coupler will automatically reattach for safety. The auto-lock window time period is customizable.
“Most serious accidents happen within the first five seconds of latching attachments and one loss of life due to equipment or operator error on a jobsite is one too many,” says Martin. “We developed the X-LOCK Coupler to prevent such incidents. The stepby-step control and various commands required for the locking and unlocking function makes the X-LOCK Coupler fail proof, safe and efficient.”
Once disconnected, the safety knuckle re-engages and is ready to lock the front pin of the next attachment. During the exchange of attachments, the operator is able to control and monitor the exchange process in the cab through the X-LOCK Control Unit, which features a separate open and close button. This control unit includes a timetable that notifies the operator when the wedge and safety knuckle are open or closed. The system features red and green LED lights as well as a warning buzzer that indicates whether the pairing was successful or not. This heightens operator awareness, helping him or her
The durable X-LOCK Couplers are made of highalloy steel and are available for excavators with 2,200- to 220,000-pound operating weights. Each coupler installs simply and safely, with just one hydraulic circuit and two hydraulic hoses. All parts are enclosed within the system, reducing damage and lessening parts replacement costs.

PlantworX 2019 Announced The Construction Equipment Association (CEA) has announced the venue and dates for their next PLANTWORX trade show. It will be held at the East of England Arena and Events Centre, Peterborough, on 11th, 12th, 13th June 2019.
“The last PLANTWORX show was blighted by the weather, so we were looking for somewhere that would provide a good opportunity for a better exhibitor and visitor experience whatever the weather,” says CEA chief executive, Rob Oliver. “Inside exhibitors can be accommodated in the purpose-built Arena and outside there are more permanent roadways and facilities for visitors. Good mobile phone and wi fi facilities are also part of the package – plus it is just 5 minutes from the A1. We took our time making the selection, but we are confident that we have found the best solution and we have an option for at least two further events at East of England Arena.”
The last two editions of the biennial event for the construction equipment industry were held at the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, near Lutterworth. PLANTWORX 2017 attracted 400 exhibitors and an attendance of c.13,000. The East of England venue is a permanent exhibition centre which has hosted other ‘big machine’ events such as LAMMA (for agricultural equipment) and Truckfest. The PLANTWORX directors conducted an extensive search for a new site based on criteria which were set on the basis of exhibitor feedback. These included good road and rail links, easy site access and improved on site services. East of England has permanent indoor and outdoor exhibition facilities and areas for machine demonstration. PLANTWORX 2019 will occupy a gross area of approximately 200,000 sqm, c.40% more than 2017.
“We are also taking the opportunity to add more resource to our organising team and will be announcing some major new initiatives in the coming weeks.” “I am excited by the potential of the new venue,” says PLANTWORX sales manager, Angela Spink. “We will be working with exhibitors, via our consultation groups, to test our site layout ideas and making sure we can deliver a top-notch event on behalf of our industry.” “The length of this contract allows us to make sure that PLANTWORX can develop the show to its full potential and capitalise upon the many features and benefits we have to offer here at the East of England Arena,” says Dean Rees, EEAEC’s business development manager. “We are thrilled that we will have the opportunity of hosting this amazing event until 2023.”

Clancy Plant has significantly increased its fleet of Kubota excavators as it looks to keep its machinery supply inhouse to maximise productivity and fleet flexibility. Facing new challenges and an increasing workload, the business is pursuing higher levels of efficiency and more reliable means of operation. As part of this, Clancy Plant requires powerful, durable and efficient machinery that will perform reliably and consistently every time. “By adding 22 Kubota excavators to our fleet, we’re providing operators and engineers with machinery that is both effective and easy to work with. This allows them to be more productive, saving time and energy that can be allocated more efficiently,” says Clancy Plant Director, Bernie Stack. “With this latest order, we now have a total of 300 Kubotas in our fleet, which are in constant use. Our partnership with Kubota aligns perfectly with the objectives we’re continually trying to achieve, enabling strong allocation of resources and the ability to adapt.” Having ordered 12 KX015-4s, 5 KX080-4as and 5 U55-4s, Clancy Plant are equipped to tackle any challenge and its ability to source in-house for the Clancy Group relieves any concern that might be had by hiring externally. “Our reputation is based on quality products and our ability to schedule and manage projects; this is a portfolio that has been in progress since the 1950s,” Bernie Stack concludes. “Whatever helps us achieve an improved level of service for our customers and higher-level productivity for our employees is always welcomed Kubota’s machinery certainly does that.”

Doosan Drives Down Costs A 30 tonne DX300LC-5 crawler excavator has won the Lowest Cost of Ownership Award for the excavators crawler medium category in a new annual series of awards organised by EquipmentWatch, a world leader in data, software and insights for the heavy equipment industry.
The Lowest Cost of Ownership Awards are the industry’s only accolade of their kind, based on empirical data regarding the long-term cost of heavy and compact equipment. Nominees were recognised within 15 different categories of machine that exhibit the lowest cost of ownership over a five year span. Total cost of ownership is one of the most important aspects that buyers take into account when they purchase equipment and the award won by the DX300LC-5 shows why Doosan equipment is always rated highly for great performance and value-for-money. The award is a further illustration of why Doosan is one of the world’s top construction equipment manufacturers. Many of the reasons behind the DX300LC-5 winning the excavators crawler medium award are evident in the greatly improved performance it offers compared to the previous ‘LC3’ Stage IIIB model. The DX300LC-5 is powered by the Doosan DL08 6-cylinder diesel engine, with an output of 202 kW of power at 1800 rpm, providing a huge 27 percent increase in engine power and a massive 30 percent boost in torque over the LC-3 model. The engine meets Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) after-treatment technologies. As well as the Doosan engine, new innovative and exclusive features have been introduced in the DX300LC-5, leading to huge reductions in fuel consumption amounting to an average of 10 percent compared to the Stage IIIB machine. Among these features is the new ‘Trip Meter Setting’ screen which allows operators to check fuel consumption daily (or over a desired period) directly from the control panel; the new Auto ShutOff provides an automatic shut down for the engine after a pre-set time when

the machine has been idling for a specified time (3 to 60 minutes configurable by the operator); and to save even more fuel, there is a special Doosandeveloped system, SPC (Smart Power Control), to optimise the balance between the pumps’ output and the diesel engine.
attention to ‘water in fuel’. If the operator ignores the signal after several alerts, the engine and pump are automatically derated. In addition, to make it easier for operators to understand the importance of warnings and to communicate the proper warning codes, pop-up menus appear with detailed information with easier to identify warnings.
To further maximise durability and reduce noise, the DX300LC-5 and all other Doosan LC-5 models are equipped with EM (Enhanced Macro-surface) bushings, which are also much more effective than regular bushings when greased.
The DX300LC-5 is factory-installed with the DoosanConnect state-of-the-art wireless fleet monitoring system. The DoosanConnect system offers a web-based fleet management solution which is very useful for monitoring the performance and security of machines and promoting preventative maintenance. It is available as a standard feature on all new generation Doosan Stage IV compliant excavators (from 14 tonne), all new generation Doosan Stage IV compliant wheel loaders and the new generation Doosan Stage IV compliant ADTs.
Air pre-cleaners are fitted as standard, to blow much of the dust, dirt, insects, rain and snow out of the air intake, to ensure cleaner air is sent to the engine air filter. This extends air cleaner servicing intervals, enhancing uptime and productivity. Doosan has also added protection to the inner cab air filter and redesigned the cab airconditioning filters for easier replacement. Recommended for dusty environments (such as quarry applications), the oil bath (9.5 l) pre-cleaner is available as an option to remove dust from the air intake, extending air cleaner servicing intervals dramatically.
The new service allows owners and dealers to remotely monitor and communicate with Doosan machines via the DoosanConnect telematics website. Also available for retro-fitting in a kit form, the DoosanConnect system is supplied with a free 3-year subscription and customers are provided with their own account so that they can manage the machines in their fleet using the system.
To avoid permanent engine damage, an acoustic alarm has been added to call the operator’s

On the Up & Up UK exports of construction and earthmoving equipment continued on a strong upward trend in the last quarter of 2017, showing growth for the fifth consecutive quarter. Imports of equipment showed an increase in Q4 of 3.8 percent in £ value terms compared with Q3, but didn’t return to the levels seen in the first two quarters of the year. However, overall imports in 2017 showed a 16.1 percent increase on 2016 levels, at £1,481 million.
Exports in Q4 2017 showed an eight percent increase on Q3 levels, at £780 million, and was the highest for over three years. A strong finish to 2017 resulted in total exports showing a 22.7 percent increase on 2016 levels at £2,917 million. UK equipment manufacturers are continuing to benefit from improving demand in many of the major overseas markets, as well as the benefit of the weaker £ exchange rate since the middle of 2016, following the Brexit referendum. The USA remained the top destination for UK exports in 2017, accounting for 24 percent of total exports on a £ value basis. Collectively, exports to EU28 countries have increased slightly to 42 percent of total exports on a £ value basis in 2017, compared with 41 percent in 2016.
Import data showing higher levels of imports of equipment in 2017 are consistent with growth in equipment sales to the UK market, according to the UK construction equipment data exchange. This shows an increase of nearly eight percent in retail sales of equipment in 2017 compared with 2016, at approximately 30,000 unit sales. Japan remained the single biggest country source of imports in 2017, and showed a 54 percent increase on 2016 levels to reach £297 million. This increased their share of total imports from 15 percent in 2016 to 20 percent in 2017. However, imports from EU28 countries in 2017 totalled £908 million and accounted for 61 percent of total imports. In summary, the UK remained a net exporter of construction and earthmoving equipment in 2017. On a £ value basis, the trade surplus showed a significant increase in 2017 to reach £1,429 million, 30 percent higher than 2016. Overall, exports were not far short of double the level of imports in 2017. Are Friends Electric Although the focus of the latest JCB international press launch was on the new X Series excavators, there was plenty more to see including – most notably – a new mini excavator with the potential to take electric power mainstream. Mark Anthony reports.
Electric excavators are nothing new. Plenty of manufacturers have dabbled with machines tethered to a generator by an umbilical cordstyle cable. And anyone that has ever owned or operated an electric-powered Brokk will know that the demolition sector is quite prepared to adopt electric power over diesel as the need and application arises.
But until now, the electric-powered excavator has been a minority interest; the stuff of specialist applications; machines developed by specialist manufacturers. That is about to change. JCB, a company that is at its best when it is producing large volumes of identical machines, has thrown its hat into the
36
DIGGERS & DOZERS
electric excavator arena. And by doing so, it has taken the electric excavator mainstream.
has been launched - a heavy duty off-board unit, allowing a full charge in two and a half hours. The self-contained power system means that there is no requirement for an electrical power connection or cable during machine operation. The battery packs allow a full working day in a typical duty cycle or four hours of operation in an extreme duty cycle. The 1.9-tonne machine will be capable of handling a range of powered attachments, making it an ideal base carrier for demolition and refurbishment projects.
Low Noise & Emissions Scheduled to become available later this year, the brand new JCB 19C-1 E-TEC mini excavator is a zero-emission machine that will allow contractors to work inside buildings and in emissionssensitive inner city environments. Another huge advantage of the new electric mini is that the external noise, at 7dBA lower, is a massive five times quieter than its traditional diesel powered counterpart. This means contractors can work after normal hours in urban streets without disturbing residents, as well operating in other noise sensitive environments including hospitals and schools.
The 19C-1 E-TEC benefits from a new box section main boom and dipper arm, with all hoses routed through the boom structure for added protection. The boom pins and dozer pivot points come with graphite-impregnated bushings, allowing 500-hour greasing intervals. All grease points are located on one side of the machine to reduce downtime and there are fewer daily checks, as the 19C-1 E-TEC has no engine oil, coolant or fuel tank.
There is no compromise on performance with the fully charged electric machine capable of putting in a full shift in normal operation. And with no daily checks of coolant and engine oil levels required, the machine is off to work quicker than its diesel counterpart.
“By replacing the diesel engine with an efficient, 48V electrical driveline, with the latest generation automotive battery cells, JCB has once again moved the mini excavator market forwards,” says JCB Chief Innovation and Growth Officer, Tim Burnhope. “The 19C-1 E-TEC will provide contractors with a zero-emission, low-noise solution, allowing them to work independently, in late night urban conditions, within buildings and even in rail tunnels with no requirement for costly exhaust extraction equipment. The 19C-1 E-TEC points the way to a new zero-emission future for JCB mini excavators.”
Based on the 19C-1 E-TEC conventional tailswing model, that was unveiled in 2017, the electric excavator replaces the standard machine’s diesel engine with an electric motor and three, next generation 104Ah battery packs, to deliver a full energy capacity of 312Ah (15kWh). The modular batteries utilise advanced NMC lithium-ion cells, shared with the latest road cars, in a rugged battery pack housing that has been designed to withstand the rigours of off-highway construction use. Using the latest 48V electrical system, the highly efficient electric motor delivers instant, greater torque than the standard machine’s diesel engine. The motor drives the 19C-1 E-TEC’s proven Bosch Rexroth load-sensing hydraulic system, delivering the same sector-leading digging performance as the standard 1.9-tonne excavator.
Although specific details are not yet available, it is expected that the 19C-1 E-TEC will carry a price premium over its diesel-fuelled counterpart. An advanced lithium-ion cell costs more to produce than a diesel tank.
The 19C-1 E-TEC is equipped with the same adjustable undercarriage and choice of digging equipment as the diesel model, to provide a maximum digging depth of 2,576 mm with the longer 1,100 mm dipper arm.
But prospective buyers of this new machine would do well to take a leaf out of the book of Hugh Edeleanu of HE Services and founder of Tesla supercar hire outfit, eVision. His company has installed a number of solar panels on the roof of the eVision premises in Kent and, as a result, has free fuel for life.
Leading the Charge A convenient on-board charger is provided as standard, allowing the machine to be fully recharged in six hours, using a conventional 230V plug. An optional 110V charging system is available for sites without 230V electricity and JCB will offer a fast-charging option once the machine
Not every application requires an electricpowered machine. And so far, the only unit available is in the 2.0 tonne operating weight range. But volume production from a big-name manufacturer coupled with the promise of potentially free fuel for life surely marks the 19C-1 E-TEC as the beginning of an electric revolution.

Volvo Hit The Mark having been running it since March the machine hasn’t skipped a beat and is extremely economical on fuel – it’s really spot on!”
The Volvo L45H is being deployed handling green waste, waste wood and road sweepings at Mr. Parry’s recycling business.
The L45H is powered by a Volvo four litre, four cylinder Stage IV final engine developing 99.3 hp and a maximum torque achieved at just of 1450 r/min. This in turn is directly linked to a fully hydrostatic transmission providing a maximum speed of 30 kph. Specifically for HM & BP Parry’s recycling operation, the machine was equipped with a 1.5m³ general purpose bucket and 15.5R25 Nokian tyres. “Getting the specification of the tyres right was crucial for our operation and these tyres provide a high degree of traction, superb wear characteristics when working on the concrete pads yet are flexible enough to work efficiently on soft ground when we occasionally use the machine around the farm,” explains Harry.
“Prior to this we used to run tele-handlers but found the maintenance costs quite high in this type of application,” says Parry. “We have had a strong relationship with Mona Tractors for many years, since our other activity is farming, and so when they took on the franchise for the Volvo compact equipment we felt confident enough to give the Volvo loading shovel a try.”
The main duties for the L45H however are in the recycling yard where it handles incoming material from all over the north of Wales. This includes green waste, wood waste, road sweepings and inert building waste. The green waste is constantly being turned in windrows as it breaks down, the wood is shredded and graded and the road sweeping are screened then washed before plastics, metals and other recyclable material is recovered from it. The majority of the processed material is composted and used on farmers’ fields – including Harry’s.
Because of the ongoing telehandler issues, SMT GB in conjunction with Mona Tractors arranged to loan HM & BP Parry a used shovel whilst awaiting the delivery of their new 8.8 tonne L45H. “The machine we borrowed had 10000 hours on the clock but it still felt extremely robust with virtually no wear in the linkages and was a pleasure to operate,” says parry. “It really endorsed our good decision to buy the L45H and

The Recruitment Challenge The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) has completed a ma jor research project to examine the supply and demand of plant operatives across the construction industry. The study engaged CPA members UK-wide, as well as training providers and contractors. A key purpose of the report was to gain clarity over the number of plant operators in UK construction and to challenge the published figure of around 40,000 as detailed in CITB’s Construction Skills Network Forecast. The CPA study indicates a total UK plant operator workforce of around 289,000. “Construction plant is on the critical path of all infrastructure and building projects and skilled and competent operators are required if projects are to be delivered safely, on budget and on target. Plant owners, operators and contractors therefore need to forecast and manage labour supply, including recruitment and retention of the existing workforce over the next 5-10 years. The
40
DIGGERS & DOZERS
findings from the CPA study mean that the numerical importance of plant operators as an occupational group matches their importance on site. Instead of being low in the rankings of occupation by volume, we now have the evidence to show that plant operation as an occupation is one of the top five in construction,” says Kevin Minton, Director of the CPA. “The research suggests that one reason for this discrepancy is the reliance on standard classification codes for company activity and occupations. These do not necessarily match the real world of work in construction, and many employers don’t fully understand them. The underreporting remained unquestioned until we raised the query. It would be a big task - outside our control - to correct this, but we will suggest to CITB that the Construction Skills Network report should explain the nature and significance of the published figures. Given the potential scale of the underreporting, this is essential for policy and planning purposes.” The CPA study also indicated that recruitment is a key challenge for plant hire companies. Around 40 percent of respondents said recruitment is very difficult or fairly difficult. 28 percent of respondents had hard-to-fill vacancies in the last year. The most common areas for recruitment over the next 12 months were found to be earthmoving (26 percent), cranes and lifting (19 percent) and materials handling (5 percent). Skills and knowledge of potential candidates was said to be the biggest barrier in relation to recruitment of plant operatives. Three key barriers in relation to training were found to be the cost, the time off the job required to undertake training and the quality of training available.
compared to other construction occupations with more well established apprenticeship programmes. Over 80 percent of respondents stated they did not employ any apprentices currently. The report findings suggested that there are fewer young people in the construction plant sector than the economy as a whole, with more than four in 10 (43 percent) construction plant workers aged 45 and over and fewer than one in 10 (8 percent) aged 24 or under. Several themes emerged when respondents were asked about the biggest challenges facing the construction plant sector over the next five years. The recruitment of young people into the industry to replace a largely ageing workforce was seen as a challenge by many, and there were concerns around the attractiveness of the industry to young people. Other challenges included the increasingly competitive environment, lack of skills on-site, Brexit and budget cuts. “This research is a valuable guide for us to work with our members to identify the areas of importance and priority in the plant hire community,” Kevin Minton concludes. “One of the key findings of this survey is the difficulty of recruiting skilled and qualified plant operators and the CPA is undertaking a number of initiatives to address this, such as a plant skills strategy forum and a careers event.”

Quarrying Goes Downhill Hauling shot rock downhill in order to then to go uphill may seem like a crazy way to run a quarry. But total cost of ownership and productivity have both jumped at Savage Quarry. At Savage Stone’s 400-acre quarry in Jessup, Maryland, gabbro is mined from five, 43-foot tall benches, with chemical rock hardness increasing with each lower level. The shot rock (similar to granite and good for coarse road base) used to be loaded into Volvo 35- and 40-ton articulated haulers and 100-ton Euclid rigids and transported a half mile uphill to the primary crusher, a Lippmann 5062 jaw crusher. The jaw crusher processes rock to 5-7 inches, which is then
stockpiled on the surge pile for the finishing plant, where it is crushed to 1 ½ minus. Stephanie Poole, Mining Engineer and Pit Supervisor for Savage Stone, explains that the quarry has exhausted its pit boundaries to the north and west, so expansion is moving to the south side of the pit and into lower levels of rock reserves. “As the pit deepened our haul roads grew longer and cycle times increased, which in turn slowed production,” she says. “We looked at

side shrouds. The buckets are lined with AR450 or 500 plate and T1. Terry Baker Sr, mobile equipment manager at Savage Stone, says: “With typical dirt work you change bucket teeth once a year. With this rock, we are getting 96 hours on a set of teeth, so we are averaging three teeth changes for every oil change.”
A major capital project started in spring 2017 to relocate the primary crusher nearly 380-feet below its current elevation and install conveyors to shuttle the crushed stone back uphill to the finishing plant. The production benefit is two-fold. Loaded haulers travel downhill can operate faster and use gravity to save on fuel consumption.
Savage Stone assigns a dollar value to every piece of equipment down to the minute. This formula was developed from crunching production sheets to calculate tonnage per day. Management uses this data when evaluating when to replace equipment and as comparisons in the purchase process. Terry adds: “We have a certain number of tons we have to meet every day to cover costs. The trucks and excavators have to roll.
If the crushing plant is the heart of a quarry, the first line excavator is the pulse, setting cycle times by how fast it can load trucks. As part of the expansion project the quarry upgraded its primary excavator to a Volvo EC750E to meet the increased production from the crushing plant’s new workflow. The superabrasive environment, running 12-hour shifts five days a week, demanded a durable and powerful excavator. The 75-ton machine with a 516 hp Volvo Tier 4 final engine is matched to a Rockland 6.5 yd3 bucket that has been modified internally and externally with guards over the cutting edge and
“We explored several competitor brand excavators. There is a lot that went into consideration including specs, serviceability, price, dealer and manufacturer support. Fuel consumption was a big concern. We burn 15,000 gallons of fuel here a week with all of our machines, so I want to get the maximum fuel efficiency per hour that we can.”

In the Zone Having recently celebrated their four-year anniversary as hire partners, SiteZone Safety and ESS Safeforce are celebrating another milestone: a record 500 SiteZone systems are now available for hire through rental equipment specialist ESS Safeforce. “The SiteZone Safety team is delighted that so many units are now accessible to workers to keep them safe on the job. Collision risk is still high in many industries, like construction and the waste sector,” says Gary Escott, Director of SiteZone Safety. “If our partnership with ESS Safeforce is making a change for the better and reducing accidents at work, then we are succeeding in our fundamental objective to improve safety standards.” SiteZone partnered with ESS Safeforce to ensure that that smaller businesses wouldn’t have to struggle financially to be safe from site collisions. By making the system easy to acquire, every site worker and plant operator can be protected from vehicle collision on site with Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology. Smaller businesses who are required to use the system when working for principle contractors, can afford to equip themselves with RFID safety systems as and when they need to, without having to purchase them. installation and instructive assistance, to reassure customers hiring SiteZone.
In the unlikely event that there’s a problem with the RFID system, ESS Safeforce will replace faulty equipment. There is also a special support team to assist anyone hiring SiteZone, which includes
The SiteZone suite includes the OverSite telematics system for data capture, and SiteZone iNstant, the UK’s first wireless proximity warning alarm system. “Our partnership with SiteZone Safety started over four years ago. The system has proved itself time and time again and offers a true solution for the problem of workers being in close proximity to moving machinery on site. In the four years, perhaps most importantly, the SiteZone Safety system has proved completely reliable meaning that we have total confidence in supplying the system to our customers,” concludes Gary Ridsdale, Commercial Director at ESS Safeforce. “We naturally look forward to growing this business and to future new products from the SiteZone Safety team.”

Three Decades at the Top Since the Australian franchise-model emergency hose repair business entered the UK market in 1988, Pirtek has grown to become the dominant force in the sector.
18 months, the network had doubled in size with the sale of the first real franchise, Pirtek Greenwich. Just five years later, the network comprised more than 20 centres and Pirtek had outgrown its Park Royal home. Pirtek Park Royal was sold and the head office operation moved to its current home in Acton, west London. The network continued to grow in the UK and with the opening of the Dublin centre in 1994, Pirtek began a similarly fruitful iteration of its business model in the Irish Republic. Pirtek then turned its attention to continental Europe, quickly establishing a footing in Germany, and the Benelux countries in 1996. The following year proved similarly significant in Pirtek’s history as the company netted the coveted British Franchise Association (BFA) Franchise of the Year award.
Having opened the door of its pilot hose centre towards the end of 1988, Pirtek is celebrating its 30th anniversary; a three decade period of growth, network expansion and product and service innovation. The concept of Pirtek – a network of independently-owned but closely linked hose centres supported by fully-equipped mobile workshops – was brought to this country by Pirtek UK founders and franchising veterans, Peter Brennan and Forbes Petrie, following a factfinding mission to Australia, where the Pirtek business model was established.
“We had the right product and quality service in the right place at the right time,” says Pirtek’s Paul Dunlop, who has been with the company for 25 years.
Having acquired the master licence, the pair set up the UK’s first dedicated hose centre in London’s Park Royal; a facility that would double as the home of Pirtek UK for the next five years. Within

“We had a superb range of products and services and we were offering them at a time when the growth in self-employment had made franchising desirable and when many industrial companies were seeking to outsource what had previously been conducted in-house.” Pirtek UK clocked up 60 centres within its first 10 years. “By 1998, we had around 200 mobile workshops on the road and were already seen as the benchmark for the emergency hose replacement sector,” Dunlop continues. “We continued to innovate, adding new products and services to our portfolio, leading to further expansion of the network. Now after 30 years in the British market, Pirtek UK has 85 centres and 350 mobile workshops.” At the turn of the millennium, Pirtek UK was nominated for the BFA’s Franchise of the Year award again and following its ongoing growth across Europe, the International Franchise of the Year. Remarkably, the company netted the double, collecting both awards. With so many achievements to its name, it would be easy for Pirtek to rest on its laurels as UK number one. But that’s not how Pirtek operates. As the company celebrates the 30th anniversary of its entry into the UK market, it is continuously innovating and evolving.
This protects from certain injury and the need for surgery, and in some cases, death. The company takes its responsibilities very seriously. As a result, it has ISO 9001 accreditation to meet customer service objectives and ISO 14001 to measure and improve its environmental impact. These are ongoing commitments and Pirtek will continue to be ahead of the curve on these issues. The company has made use of information technology to coordinate jobs, communicate and regulate stock for many years. All jobs are recorded on iPads and stock is managed via a bespoke system. However, the passion to grow and improve doesn’t stop there as Pirtek is in the process of rolling out a new, improved IT system that will be launched this year.
Pirtek established Total Hose Management, a holistic data-driven system whereby franchises record, service and maintain hose systems, replacing parts at an optimal time and reducing hose failure. The success of this system is now being carried over into Total Hydraulic Management, covering entire hydraulic systems. Pirtek Tyne and Wear has established an ongoing relationship with Banks Mining, with scheduled maintenance of its heavy plant pre-empting failure, thus reducing unplanned maintenance as a percentage of all work to single figures.
“The company has undergone some truly radical changes in the past three decades and I don’t think any of us could have predicted the growth we have enjoyed,” concludes Paul Dunlop. “The one thing that has remained unchanged is a commitment to innovation and a constant improvement in customer service. Those were the foundations of the business started by Forbes Petrie and Peter Brennan in 1988 and they are the driving force behind our business today.”
Pirtek has also addressed one of the major dangers of working with high pressure systems – fluid injection injuries. The company’s Fluid Power Glove is unique in resisting jets of oil at the highest pressures found in regular hydraulic systems.
