EDITOR'S NOTE
T
he alarm clock of finals is ringing, shattering the delicate dreams of summer break and bearing news that the end of the semester is here, causing us to wonder how it is already time for finals season to rear its ugly head again. The easiest decision is to roll over and hit the snooze button on life, pulling the comfort of apathy over our heads and drifting off to a world where our final exams are used as kindling for a summer campfire on the beach. There is always the temptation is to stay in bed and simply forget about them, relaxing in doomed hopes that summer will miraculously come before our next exam. Or, we could kick off the covers and place both feet on the floor, taking life one step at a time during this crucial season, which unfortunately comes around every year. Sure, it sucks to have cold reality hit you after throwing off the blankets, but we have come to realize that getting up and working hard in the tougher days of the semester is actually rewarding. Pushing through the pain offers an opportunity to breach the last frontier of finals with triumph. Although the fight for summer’s relief

“Last year, I had four finals in one day and it was absolutely horrible. I couldn't figure out how to study equally for each of them and now it's happening all over again because I have three in one day this semester. To make it all worse, it’s on my birthday.”
“I had to sign up for an oral exam time for an honors class and accidentally missed my 8:30 time slot by an hour. Turns out that the professor was running late and had to go to the airport, so I didn’t end up doing my final until 3:30.”
“I had a final project and I showed up to class thinking it was due the next class, but it was actually due that day. I had to leave class and write it up really fast to get back and turn it in before class ended.”
Taelor Marquetti-Gadison Copy Chief
“I devoted all of my study time to history, because it was my weakest subject at the time. I stayed up all night studying for my test and then when I got to class the next day, I found out the test wasn’t until a week later.”
Bryce Dodds Sports Editor
“I woke up to go to my 9 a.m. final and it’s ten minutes before the test when I walk in the room, and I realized I was in the wrong room all the way across campus. I had to run all the way across campus and barely made it.”

Studying inside or out, campus has you covered EFREN DIOSDADO
ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR @EFRECORP
For art senior Tyler Reichert, a study spot on campus isn’t about the best coffee grounds or the best wall art–and it definitely isn’t about comfortable lounge chairs. In fact, Reichert doesn’t like being in closed environments at all. “I like to study in the grass,” Reichert said. “I (also) like to go to the Rec. I get on a stationary bike and I put my books in front of me and pedal.” On a campus with more than 40,000 students, not everyone shares study habits or enjoys the same learning environment. For a study spot unbound by walls, try the picnic tables near the Technology Annex or the grassy hill sloping toward the Student Center Satellite. Although Houston's weather is treacherous at best, this time of year provides some of the clearest, most beautiful days to get out and switch-up your study-spot habits. On the other hand, the great outdoors might be a bit too noisy for communications senior Chelsey Trahan, as she looks primarily for a peaceful environment. “I look for somewhere quiet and where there’s not a lot of people so I can focus,” Trahan said. “I get distracted easily.” For places that offer the most quiet and minimal distraction, visit the Legacy Lounge in the SC South or the fifth floor of the M.D. Anderson Library. Having solitude while studying for exams is an important aspect for many students, especially during the stressful, chaotic season of finals. The confessionals and cubicles of the library's upper floors offer a studious atmosphere, but the bare walls and small windows produce a problem for students who prefer a more personalized space.
Students enjoy using the new Legacy Lounge and the hill next to the SC Satellite (below) for some quiet study time. | Karis Johnson/The Cougar
Studying in the comfort of their own room is a must for students like Jacob Kohr, who prefer to hit the books at home alone. However, studying alone isn't always the best option, especially when questions on the material arise. When he's having a difficult time understanding course material, Kohr goes to the Geo-Science Learning Center near Fleming to study with helpful peers. “If I need some help, I prefer to do it in a place where there’s a lot of people doing it, so I can ask questions,” Kohr said. Whether you prefer sitting in the sun or cramming in a cubicle, UH's campus boasts various study options for the finals season at hand.
The hill by the SC Satellite is a prime spot for studying if you want to catch some fresh air while you're at it. | Karis Johnson/The Cougar

Therapy dogs bring more than just cuteness to campus
In an effort to help stressed students ease the pain of finals week, UH, in collaboration with Faithful Paws, hopes to make the otherwise difficult end to the semester more fun. | Courtesy of BigStock
TAELOR MARQUETTI-GADISON COPY CHIEF
At the end of every semester, most students spend their days shuffling around to purchase scantrons, cramming in the library, chain drinking espressos and sleeping in the most convenient (and strange) places. Every year UH seeks to counteract the anxiety of projects, exams and looming deadlines with Finals Mania: a study break for those who have spent a great portion of the week cramming for
exams. It provides breakfast and study strategies to reduce stress — it also brings in dogs. UH collaborates with Faithful Paws, a pet-therapy program, to bring therapy dogs to campus. These certified canine companions are available to feed, pet and even cuddle through Thursday at the M.D. Anderson Library in an event called "Paws and Relax." “We read about the astounding success of therapy dog programs at other college and university libraries and wanted to provide a similar experience
for the students at UH,” said librarian and co-creator of Paws and Relax Kirsten Feist in a news release. “We were easily able to find partners and volunteers, with enthusiasm for the event growing each semester.” Research conducted by the University of Missouri-Columbia found that being around dogs provides health benefits, including the release of endorphins, which are associated with comfort and relaxation. “Going into a room full of loving animals is a stress reliever second to none,”
biochemistry junior Isaac Wilhelm said. Amid this stressful time – Faithful Paws accommodates their schedule around finals – students can find time to take a “paws” from the clamor and commotion of finals with some rest, coffee and fluffy pooches. “There’s something therapeutic about how unconditionally compassionate canines are,” hotel and restaurant management sophomore Jasmine Morris said. “Dogs don’t care what grades you make on your finals, they just want you to rub their bellies.”

Spring retrospective: A look back at the semester Jan. 27 - MLK Day of Service
Alongside Americans across the country, students, faculty and other UH representatives celebrated the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. throughout the month. The ceremony and service event aligned with MLK’s ideals, as the surrounding Houston area was inundated with volunteers working to better the community.
March 9 - Student Government Elections
The 52nd Administration of SGA has begun with former Speaker of the Senate Shaun Smith at the helm. After drama in the run-off elections when Elisha Diaz, Smith's opponent from The "We" Party II, secretly recorded a conversation between himself and Smith's vice president Tanzeem Chowdhury. Diaz withdrew because of it, paving the way for Smith and Chowdhury to take over.
Jan. 29 - Matthew McConaughey hired as commencement speaker
The university announced that Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey would be giving the University's first commencement ceremony at TDECU Stadium and would be paid $135,000 in the process.
HENRY STURM
OPINION EDITOR
The 2015 spring semester saw UH continue to grow as a premier institution, developing in areas ranging from athletics to finances. The school’s strong scholarly foundation served as an anchor, while other aspects moved on shaky ground toward stronger footing. The sports teams continued to grow, SGA elections led to controversy and after seven years as Vice President of Administration and Finance Carl Carlucci stepped down amidst the hullabaloo concerning TDECU Stadium and other financial issues. UH has not let these occurrences degrade its image or impede its progress, rather, it has taken steps both academically and culturally. With the transition of the University Center into the new Student Center after three years of planning and construction, UH has seen the community become more centralized on campus. With the final addition to the Student Center came two new restaurants, a technology store and the renovation of the bowling alley, encouraging students to utilize on-campus resources and entertainment. Besides bringing students together on the main campus, UH is also look-
ing forward to connecting Cougars with the city after the completion of the Metro line. With the new station located between Moody Towers and the Cougar Villages, the train will run from UH to connecting lines in the Museum District and Downtown, allowing students more opportunities to experience the culture of Houston. The MLK Day of Service — which was the largest event of its kind at UH — was met with applause and communal relations. The effects of the new TDECU football stadium, among many other changes, were widespread and felt by the entire UH community. The University has also proven its desire to be a strong and salient member of the nation, allowing demonstrators protesting the minimum wage to march on campus. Now, with the end of the semester and the commencement ceremony just ahead, Matthew McConaughey will speak to the graduating students of 2015, giving the University more taste of the limelight. In retrospect, UH has taken the achievements and setbacks the semester has offered and is using them to continue moving confidently toward its future goals.

March 26-28 - Frontier Fiesta
A landmark event at UH, Frontier Fiesta took place at TDECU Stadium for the first time and drew large crowds in the midst of it. With headlining performers Kristian Bush, Cher Lloyd and ScHoolboy Q, the festival boasted three nights of music and fun for thousands of students.
April 7 - Wolffest 2015 This festive collection of entrepreneurship students worked to get business from those passing by and to win the annual competition involving seven undergraduate-run food stands. As a larger goal, the festival raised funds for the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship.

A Summer is here, the sun is shining, the clouds are overhead and the heat is sticky. But with that, you still have those looming weeks of terror: finals. Here are some tips to make sure your finals don’t end up a horror story.
Forget what your mom told you, please DO blow bubbles with your gum. Push that idea out of your head and make your way to the C-Store to pick up your favorite flavor of gum. Study while chewing that Hubba Bubba, and then head over to take your test. Chew on a new stick of the same flavor and it’ll make remembering what you studied easier. Don’t believe me? It’s scientifically proven. Maybe you should, like, not study for a while. Believe it or not, taking a break in your studying actually helps you. Sure, it may take away from some valuable cramming time, but in the end it’s better for you. So don’t be afraid to head over to House of Pies and grab some breakfast at 4 a.m. Your brain will thank you for it.
No one on Snapchat is going to care. I know that the temptation is real. You’re in the library alone and then it happens: the almighty Snapchat moment. You have to put it on your story for all of your followers to see, but the problem is, they’re studying too. Take a break from social media for a couple of days. You don’t have to give up games! To those who have their PlayStation 4, Xbox One, WiiU, iPads, laptops and cell phones all within arm’s length 24/7, this one is for you. You can still play games – but the educational kind.Have your roommate quiz you on the material and you can happily return the favor. Super Smash Bros. will still be there when your finals are over, I pinky promise. –Glissette Santana

While the end of finals season brings excitement and anticipation for summer, it also serves as a closing point for the 4,958 UH students who will be graduating on May 15. Among the graduates will be Heather and Sarah, who will be graduating from the Bauer College of Business and the College of Education, respectively. For students who have spent a large part of their lives working toward earning a degree in higher education, this finals season will be the last one of their career at UH. The class of 2015 hails from 37 countries, with graduates ranging in age from 18 yearsold to 78 years-old. Omar Harmouche— the University’s youngest graduate— will receive a bachelor of science in biology, while the oldest graduate, Christopher Gantela, will earn a Ph.D. in geophysics. As summer appears on the horizon, a chapter ends for the 2015 graduates of UH as the last exams are handed in and their last season of finals comes to close.
With the first graduation in TDECU Stadium and the presence of Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey,
the city will be watching to see what to expect from the up-and-coming, Tier one University in years ahead.
