DELAWARE LEAGUE GIRLS SOFTBALL

Roxbury back in DL softball hunt STAFF REPORT In Delaware League softball, Roxbury returns a bulk of its squad that advanced to the Class D section quarterfinals in 2019. Sophomore Bryanna Meehan will assume starting pitcher duties once again for the Rockets this season while senior Daisy Accordino will slot in as the No. 2 arm.

Ware said Garza, German and her twin sister Madison German were each in the upper half of Roxbury’s batting order last season and are expected to return this year. The Rockets lost Emma Hines who played first base, to graduation, but will be without sophomore Brianna Cross as she underwent knee surgery in early March.

“She puts the time, she works hard and puts the time in, that’s what you need to do,” Roxbury coach Jane Ware said of Meehan. “She’s athletic too so that helps with the speed and everything else.” Senior Erin Garza and sophomore Lacey German will be leaned on to pace the Rockets’ offense as the pair have a combined eight years of varsity experience.

Cross has been Roxbury’s primary catcher the past two seasons and was a league all-star a year ago, along with Meehan and Garza. “As soon as we figure out the catching situation we should be in good shape,” Ware said, mentioning it will be either Madison German or Courtney DeMaio who will take over behind the plate. The Rockets have a deep

sophomore class that includes seven players, while the rest of its team is composed of a pair of sophomores and seniors and no juniors. “I know a lot of teams are struggling, we struggled to get 11 (players),” Ware said. “It’s real tough to compete with those big D (schools) and we can barely field a team.” Last season, Roxbury and Gilboa finished atop the DL standings and Ware anticipates the Wildcats will again be a tough out. “Gilboa has a great program, even though they graduated a bunch they’re always there,” Ware said. “I think we’re going to see them a lot. Last year, every single game was down to the wire, it was awesome.” Gilboa advanced all the way to the section semifinal before fall-

ing to the eventual state champions in Deposit last spring. Tri-Valley League foe Schenevus ended the Rockets’ season in the section tournament in a matchup of the third-seeded Dragons and sixth-seeded Roxbury. “I hope (we’re) competitive in the league,” Ware said.

The schedules listed were made available before the COVID-19 outbreak caused disruptions in the season. Section III Athletics which includes Cooperstown, has announced that all interscholastic spring sports will be suspended until April 14. SK to face challengers in league title defense DELAWARE LEAGUE BOYS BASEBALL

STAFF REPORT Fresh off a Section IV Class D title and state semifinal appearance in 2019, a South Kortright team featuring seven returning starters and three top arms from last sea-

son could be expected to breeze to a third consecutive Delaware League title in 2020. That does not appear to be the case, however, as a slew of challengers appear set to stop the

Rams’ run at two. “We should be pretty solid with seven returning starters. Everything has to fall our way, but we are going to be competitive,” SK coach Bob VanValkenburg said. “Jefferson is going to give us all we want and Davenport has a nice squad.” Add in a Roxbury team with returning contributors, and some potential team mergers that DL commission Jim Adair could not specify but said may be in the works, and the SK three-peat is anything but a certainty. Still, SK does boast much of the talent from its league, section and regional championship team last year, losing only steady infielder Aidan Fox and center fielder Derek Burns to graduation. Most importantly, the Rams return three main pitchers from last season, headed by senior Austin Lamport, senior Logan Kaufman and sophomore Patrick Dengler. All three were Delaware League first team all-stars in 2019, as was senior Chris Champlin. Returning starters in juniors Joe Krupa, Tyler Hall and Brandon Grommeck, along with sophomore Logan Firment, fill out the SK lineup.

“The kids are working hard, we’re excited, we definitely want to get out there and play,” VanValkenburg said in reference to potential disruptions from concerns over the spread of COVID-19, prior to the closure of Delaware County’s schools over the weekend. “They (the players) know the potential they have. Soccer and basketball we fell a little short this year. The athletes are hungry.” While the SK roster features

just 12 players, VanValkenburgh said he is comfortable with the number. As for filling vacant spots in the lineup, he has a pair of rising newcomers with familial ties to the team. Darren Dengler, an eighth-grader and brother of Patrick, and Adam Champlin, a freshman and brother of Chris, will compete for time. Jefferson will also wield a group of returning players after a 2019 season that saw them clinch the sixth seed in the Class D section bracket and defeat SK, 6-4, in a game that saw the Rams throw both Kaufman and Lamport. Seth Wade and Cole Lapinel, both DL first-teamers a year ago, should return after productive seasons with the J-Hawks’ basketball team. Dakota Schafer and Evan Staroba, both second team all-league performers in 2019, should also return for Jefferson. Davenport, which is not merging with Stamford this year, was the five seed in last year’s section bracket and the other DL finalist, and should return plenty from last season as well. Warren Quigley and Jordan Wamsley both earned all-league first team status last season and are also coming off seasons on the hardwood. Roxbury and Margaretville are also among teams that also had players named to the all-league first team as underclassmen in 2019. Delhi aiming to build in 2020

STAFF REPORT Delhi returns seven starters for the 2020 season as it strives to build upon a solid 2019 campaign. The Bulldogs finished with a 6-4 record a season ago, which put them in a threeway tie for third place in the Midstate Athletic Conference with Walton and Harpursville. Deposit/Hancock finished in first place with a 9-1 record. Among the returners are senior shortstop Tyler Bruce, senior third baseman Preston Vanwie, senior catcher Michael Griswold, senior second baseman Sean Carron, junior center fielder Bryce Bracchy, and senior pitcher Rich LaLosh. Delhi coach Phil Neumann, who is entering his fifth season at the helm, said pitching will be critical to his team’s success. “It comes down to pitching,” Neumann said. “LaLosh will be our No. 1. Who will step up to be our No. 2, No. 3 is unknown. Luke Branigan and Kyle Pagillo, they will probably be our two and three.” Neumann mentioned that Branigan and Pagillo, both juniors, have experience on the mound, but they’ll be thrust into a bigger roles this season. good player for us,” Neumann said. “He was our best player. We only had two seniors, Connor Ferguson was our first baseman.” Stepping in for Ferguson on first base duties will be junior Alex Stanton. Stanton serves as the only Delhi player who was not part of its infield a year ago. “He’s a good hitter, he looks good,” Neumann said. “Our other positions are kind of up in the air. We got a nice group of kids really.” The last time the Bulldogs took the field, they lost a heartbreaker to Sidney in the first round of the section tournament on a walk-off single from Tanner Gifford. Delhi will not get a chance to avenge its loss to the Warriors until at least April 27, but in the meantime, it’ll look to find some consistency in the rest of its league schedule. “All the league games are tough,” Neumann said. “You got to come to play every day or you ‘re going to get beat. “Deposit is going to be tough, Sidney is going to be tough, Greene has some really good young ball players, Walton’s got a nice group,” Neumann continued. “Harpursville’s been solid, they won the MAC tournament last year. Edmeston making bid for fifth straight TVL title

STAFF REPORT With their ace from the 2019 season and plenty of talent returning from its fourth con-

secutive Tri-Valley League title, Edmeston baseball is looking like the early favorite in its drive for five.

While key losses in Derek Lyon, Luke Ough and Parker Robinson will be absent from this edition of the Panthers’ lineup, a deep set of returners, headed by junior ace Josh Martin, give coach Darren Belden a shot to make it a half decade of league titles. “We’re gonna give a run for it, we will be a pretty good team,” Belden said. “If I can keep the pitchers on the right team at the right time, we will be a tough team to beat again.” In addition to Martin, senior Nate Jennings will be a key component of the rotation, while sophomore Ronny Hickling, junior Greg DeVries and senior Garrett Lum also figure to take the mound. “We will have to have a whole bunch of guys throw because we play a non-league schedule that’s really tough,” Belden said. “Every time we do something like that we need the right guys throwing at the right time.” Logan Williams and Kyle Ough likely will both earn places in the lineup, while Belden said Tyler Jennings and Colin McEnroe will compete for opportunities. While this group of athletes has made deep runs in sectional play during both basketball season and baseball season, Belden is hoping this squad can surpass last season’s section semifinal loss to South Kortright and win some hardware. “It’s a good group of kids, hopefully we can get over the top and win one of these,” he said. Schenevus, the other league finalist and a section finalist last season, has seen some turnover in the dugout and between the foul lines. George Nebesnik takes over for Tim Walke as the Dragons’ skipper. Nebesnik is new to Schenevus

this year but has logged several years coaching modified softball and girls basketball for South Kortright. Assistants familiar to the program in Jim Gaske and Eric Jones made Nebesnik feel at home before the end of the first week of practice, he said. “We’re gonna be good. Guys have gotten better in just the last three days, and it’s starting to come together,” Nebesnik said. “The guys have the right mindset, they don’t want another ending like last year. Our whole mindset is we want to win a championship.” Justifying Nebesnik’s positivity are key returners in Owen Schneider, Dillon Gaske, Peyton Darling and Chris Bostwick. The loss of Chris Walke, who battled with Martin to a 1-0 loss in last season’s league final, will have to be filled by new arrivals, with junior Zach Burton, freshman Trevor Schneider and junior Ethan LaPre leading the newcomers. While Schenevus and Edmeston exited last season as the top contenders from the TVL, program mergers between Laurens and Milford as well as Cherry Valley-Springfield and Sharon Springs make the league difficult to predict. Gilbertsville-Mount Upton merged with Unadilla Valley, but will play a Midstate Athletic Conference schedule. “We know Edmeston is the big challenge, but we also won’t take anyone lightly,” Nebesnik said. “We aren’t intimidated, we are ready to go.” Spring Sports - THE DAILY STAR

Schenevus looking to grasp wide open TVL STAFF REPORT Schenevus was the class of the Tri-Valley League softball scene last year and in 2020, the Dragons will look to stay on top despite some key departures. “I think we should be competitive,” Schenevus coach Ron Spranger said. “I don’t know exactly what everyone else has, but we lost a good chunk of offense.” Spranger was The Daily Star’s 2019 Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 16-3 record and “the most wins we’ve had of any of my teams,” Spranger told Daily Star in September. Alexis Hults, The Daily Star’s 2019 Player of the Year, is the Dragons’ most obvious missing piece from a season ago. A pitcher and center fielder, Hults finished the season hitting .478, and also compiled 32 RBIs, 46 runs, two home runs and 22 stolen bases. Hults was key in Schenevus’ run to the section semifinals before it ultimately fell to Marathon, 4-1. Erika Spranger aided Hults on offense as she recorded 31 RBIs of her own. Both her and Hults graduated last spring, leaving two sizable holes the Dragons will try to fill. “We lose a lot of power with Alexis and Erika,” Spranger said. “Hannah Osborne will pick up some of the pace there, our shortshop. Alexia Piercy and Autumn Jones [will help] too.” Osborne grabbed a TVL all-star nod along with Hults and Spranger a year ago. Piercy, a senior, and Jones, a junior, will serve as Schenevus’ leadership core as prominent upperclassmen. Osborne will also be a junior this season. With Hults and Spranger both part of the Dragons’ pitching rotation, Cassie Snyder is expected to

be the go-to option on the mound as the junior has the most experience among returning pitchers. “She pitched well last year and will probably pick up a bulk of the innings this year,” Spranger said. Spranger also noted Sam Osborne, a freshman, will take over the catching duties this season for the Dragons. Around the TVL, Spranger feels the rest of the league will be competitive.

“Milford’s always good,” Spranger said. “No matter what they have, they’re competitive. I think Laurens struggled with numbers, but Andy Carr will make them competitive. Worcester had a bunch of good pitchers. Edmeston has a bunch of young players so they’ll be better. Richfield, they’re always decent. I think it’s pretty up in the air this year. I think anyone could win the league.” Milford should return a pair of
