Key losses, but also key returners for SK DELAWARE LEAGUE BOYS BASEBALL
BY BRIAN GOOD South Kortright relied heavily on No. 1 pitcher Kenton Pickett in 2018. The result was an undefeated (7-0) season for Pickett and South Kortright’s first Delaware League title in nine years. Unfortunately for the Rams, Pickett has graduated and they’ll have to find other ways to win games if they expect to repeat as champions. “Kenton had a great season. We need to find some guys that can eat up innings,” South Kortright head coach Bob VanValkenburgh said. “He went 7-0, threw 40-some innings for us. That’s a lot to pick up but I’m hoping we’re capable.” Starters Conor Woznick and Alex Funk have also graduated, but SK returns 10 other players with varsity experience. Logan Kaufman, a first team all-DL selection in 2018, is back for the Rams and will be tasked with replacing a large portion of what the they lost with Pickett. VanValkenburgh said he expects Kaufman to be the team’s No. 1 pitcher when the season starts. Catcher Chris Champlin is also back, alongside seniors Aidan Fox and Derek Burns. “Chris is an excellent catcher and can pitch a little too,” VanValkenburgh said. “Aidan is back playing second base and Derek will be out in centerfield.” VanValkenburgh won’t just rely on Kaufman to replace the innings that Pickett threw last season. Austin Lamport, who started a few games on the mound last year, will be the team’s No. 2 pitcher and freshman Patrick Dengler will also see some starts on the mound. “Austin should have a good year, he’ll play third base and probably be the No. 2 pitcher,” VanValkenburgh said. “He had some spot starts for us last season and I expect more from his this year.” “Dengler played some last season and I think he’ll be a really good pitcher down the road. He’ll get some starts and keep developing,” he said. Davenport, Stamford and Roxbury also look MARCH 20, 21 AND 22, 2019

South Kortright’s Aidan Fox tosses the ball to force an out at first after fielding a ground ball during a May 10 game. to compete with the Rams for a title in 2019, but VanValkenburgh said last season’s title game opponent, Jefferson, will most likely be SK’s biggest hurdle in repeating as champs. “Jefferson will be tough again,” he said. “I’d say they’re our toughest opponent this year
just like they were last season.” Andrew Shapiro, Seth Wade and Cole Lapinel are all back for the J-Hawks. Shapiro and Wade were first-team all-DL selections last season and Lapinel was named to the second team. Spring Sports - THE DAILY STAR

Roxbury’s Erin Garza catches a throw from her catcher as Gilboa’s Adridanna Doyle slides safely into the bag during a May 10 game.
Rockets look to reload BY JARED BOMBA Roxbury has a young roster and faces some key losses as the Rockets look to defend their Delaware League championship. In a sport dominated by pitching, the Rockets are hamstrung by the loss of ace Claire McDaniel. The senior carried the Roxbury pitching staff in 2018 and registered a twohit win in the league championship win over Gilboa. “A pitcher that can consistently throw strikes and keep you in a game, it is very hard to replace,” Roxbury head coach Jane Ware said. “These kids aren’t exposed to softball until when they put a glove on in seventh grade. They don’t see a softball until they start playing modified.” Ware will lean on a pair of inexperienced arms to fill the gap. Freshman Bryanna Mee-

han will get the first opportunity to own the circle for the Rockets. “I hope she matures. She has no varsity experience, she threw modified a little bit last year,” Ware said. “But I like her fastball and I like that she is developing and can throw hard. But if she struggles we do have somebody that can throw strikes.” Junior Daisy Accordino will back up Meehan on the pitching staff. Ware also expects production from her few upperclassmen. Emma Hynes returns as the only senior on a roster with three juniors, one sophomore and seven freshman. “Emma, she’s hit fourth for me for three years and she plays first base,” Ware said. “I’m hoping her leadership, along with Erin Garza (junior, third base), can help us move forward.”
Freshman shortstop Lacey German and catcher Brianna Cross both started for the Rockets as eighth graders. They lead a young group with freshman starters also expected as second base and two outfield positions. “The freshman are working really hard,” Ware said “As soon as they figure it out we will move forward. Ware also identified strong pitcher-catcher combinations and returning squads from Davenport and Gilboa. Once warmer weather arrives, Ware said she will know more about how her team will stack up against the competition. “I’ll know more when we can get outside with live batters and stuff like that,” Ware said. The Rockets begin play on March 28 against Margaretville. Spring Sports - THE DAILY STAR

TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE BOYS BASEBALL
Familiarity comes with change for Edmeston
12
CHERYL CLOUGH
Edmeston pitcher Josh Martin throws to first to force out Franklin runner Bryce Davis during a May 16 game.
MARCH 20, 21 AND 22, 2019
BY JARED BOMBA In Tri-Valley League baseball, Edmeston has a host of returners as it looks for its fourth consecutive league title. The Panthers do face some change as Darren Belden takes over for Mike Clark as head coach. But Belden, who has coached Edmeston at the modified level for more than a decade, is fortunate to be working with a core of players that he knows well as the varsity basketball coach. “It’s gonna be a little bit of a transition for me but the best part is we have so many kids coming back, so that’s a big help to a new coach coming in,” Belden said. “It’s kinda funny, we get beat on Saturday in the (basketball) section final and we started (baseball) practice on Monday. So we just kept going, in a different sport is all.” Sophomore Josh Martin, a third team all-state selection in 2018, is fresh off a stellar basketball season and looks to lead the Panthers deeper into the section playoffs after last season’s quarterfinal exit. Belden said Martin will be “as effective on the baseball field as on the basketball court,” which would be a recipe for success as the sophomore starred for the Panthers, who won a league title and came up one win short of a state tournament berth this winter. Martin, who was the winning pitcher in the league
championship win over Franklin, will be joined in the rotation by several teammates from basketball season. Luke Ough and Derek Lyon, both league all-stars on the diamond last year, return for the Panthers. Both will pitch for Edmeston, with Ough also seeing time behind the plate. Parker Robinson and Nathan Jennings look to join the rotation for what could be a deep Panthers pitching staff. “We’ve got four of five good kids that can throw,” Belden said. Edmeston did suffer a trio of losses to graduation in Troy Slentz, Brendan Kapp and Justin McCall. “All three of them were starters that played most of the time and were good at the plate, but with the kids we have coming back, I don’t know if we can replace them right off but we will be able to cover that,” Belden said. The Panthers face plenty of competition within their league. Belden identified a strong returning squad from Franklin, which entered last year’s league title game undefeated and reached the section semifinals. “I think Franklin will be back in the mix, and don’t count Schenevus out. They have a few arms over there and some bats that can hang in there,” Belden said. “And with schools merging, who knows what other schools are gonna do?” Spring Sports - THE DAILY STAR

TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE GIRLS SOFTBALL
Schenevus returns experienced core BY JARED BOMBA With the 2018 Tri-Valley League title and almost the entire roster returning, Schenevus coach Ron Spranger is anticipating another strong season for his squad. “We’ve only lost one starter, and that was due to injury not graduation,” Spranger said. “So we basically have the whole team back and expectations are pretty high.” Apart from the loss of junior centerfielder Patricia Biegel, who suffered an ACL tear during basketball season, Spranger’s team boasts returners at eight other positions, including three experienced pitchers. Senior Erika Spranger, coach Spranger’s daughter, is joined by senior Alexis Hults and sophomore Cassie Snyder on the pitching staff. Hults and Spranger both earned all-league honors a year ago. “They’ve got a year of experience under their belt, so I expect a lot more from them,” Spranger said. Sophomore shortstop Hannah Osborne anchors the middle infield on a team that will start at least two seniors, juniors and sophomores. “She is a good offensive player and good defensive player so she stabilizes us up the middle,” Spranger said. “But they all hit pretty well last year so we hope that continues.” Building on last year’s success is key for the Dragons as they look to repeat as league champions and advance past last season’s quarterfinal elimination in the section tournament. “They just know they have to work a little harder this year because when you’re trying to repeat, everyone is out to get you,” Spranger said. “You have to come

with your ‘A’ game everyday because everybody else is coming with theirs. And in the two weeks of practice, they are working hard, I’m real pleased with them so far.” That necessity is heightened by a host of challengers in the league. Spranger identified a number of league rivals and pointed out that combined teams can
be tough to forecast. “They all potentially can give you trouble. Richfield had three one-run games with us last year, and they combined with Owen D. Young,” Spranger said. “Laurens is always good, Milford is always good, and you can’t leave out Morris. Worcester has gotten a lot better.”

MIDSTATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE BASEBALL
Unatego looks for third straight title BY BRIAN GOOD For the past two seasons, the Midstate Atletic Conference has belonged to the Unatego Spartans. In 2019, the Spartans will look to make it three league titles in a row, but they’ll be missing some key names from the 2017 and 2018 title runs. Dawson Wilsey, Paul Slawson, Cooper Thayer and ace Andrew Santobuono have all graduated, leaving head coach Frank Microni with some question marks heading into the year. “Those are four kids that really knew how to play baseball,” the Unatego coach said. “It will be tough to replace that kind of production, but I’m happy with what I’m seeing so far. We need kids that have been on the team to step into leadership roles and play the game how we’ve been playing it (the past two years).” Thayer was described by Microni as the kind of player that would do anything asked of him. He played in the outfield, the infield and even ate up some innings on the mound.. “We used to call him the backyard kid,” Microni said. “No matter what you ask him to do he just goes out there and plays ball.” Slawson played shortstop for the Spartans and served as their No. 2 pitcher, and both he
U
and Wilsey were named to the MAC first team All-Stars. Santobuono, the league’s 2018 co-MVP, went undefeated on the mound throughout the regular season and possessed what his coach described as unique physical and mental skills that allowed him to dominate. “You could write a movie about him (Santobuono), the farm kid that just loved to pitch,” he said. “I have never seen a high school kid prepare the way he did, he was a student and studied the way other teams hit him in order to get better. I’m so proud of him and how much he improved to be the player he is. He is definitely a gem.” With Santobuono and Slawson gone, the Spartans have lost a large chunk of the pitching that allowed them win the league in 2018, but they have eight seniors on this year’s team, including Caden Clow. Clow, who was also an all-MAC first team selection, can hit for power and average and is expected to do a little bit of everything in 2019. “Caden started playing with us as a freshman and has grown a lot,” Microni said. “ He’s very athletic, and can really hit the ball. We may end up playing him at shortstop, the outfield and having him pitch.” Jacob Marshall, Austin Gilbertson, Tyler
Shaul, Connor Griffin and catcher Trevor Winchester also return as key contributors from last year. Gilbertson, a lefty, is expected to be the Spartans’ No. 1 pitcher, but Microni said he expects Clow, Shaul and Griffin to get some time on the mound as well. Marshall expects to hit near the top of the lineup along with Clow, both of whom are going to need to provide power for Unatego to have a shot at its third straight MAC crown. Delhi and Deposit/Hancock, the latter of which faced off with Unatego in last season’s MAC title game, both expect to challenge the Spartans and their relatively inexperienced squad. “We lost a lot of pitching and for us it’s about experience,” Microni said. “We had a lot of experience the past two years. The amount of games played by some of these guys is probably not what its been in some other years. We’re kind of untested.” Deposit/Hancock, fresh off its 2018 Class D state championship, loses Darren Shaver from last year’s squad but expects to return Luke Resti, Cole Russell and Owen Wormouth. Delhi finished 2018 as the Section IV Class D runners-up, and bring back Alex Taylor, Devin Kilmer and Tyler Bruce as key contributors.
