TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE GIRLS BASKETBALL
Franklin, Morris ready for another deep run BY BRIAN GOOD The Franklin Purple Devils were one half of basketball away from a 2017-2018 Tri-Valley League title. Unfortunately for them, a second-half defensive adjustment and a dominating offensive performance from Morris’ Elizabeth Thompson stopped them in their tracks and handed the Mustangs their first league crown since 2007. This season Franklin will have a shot at revenge. Freshman sisters Marissa Campbell and Kayla Campbell are back for the Purple Devils. Kayla Campbell led Franklin in scoring last season as an eighth grader, and brings a blend of shooting and ball handling that allows her to have her way with most defenders. In last season’s title game, she scored 22 first-half points to lead her team to a 31-16 halftime lead, but a box-and-one adjustment in the second half held her to just one point as Morris completed its comeback. Julie Archibald and Olivia Hyzer also return from last season’s starting lineup, but the Purple Devils will be without starter Kirsten Brownell, who was lost to graduation. Madelyn Ackley and Alyssa Nowhitney will also be back as Franklin hopes to win its first TVL title since 2014. “Franklin is such a young team, I think they will have improved from where they were last year,” Morris head coach Rhoda Flint said. “They are young and the Campbell girls are so skilled. Franklin is going to be the team to beat [in the Tri-Valley League] this year.”

Franklin’s Kayla Campbell goes in for a layup against Morris defender Kaleigh Spencer in Oneonta on Feb. 10.
If the Purple Devils are going to win it all, they’re going to have to get through Morris once again. Thompson, last season’s leading scorer for the Mustangs, is back. She had a team-high 22 points in the title game, spearheading the Morris offense in the comeback. A center-forward hybrid, Thompson controls the paint but can also stretch the floor, extending her game beyond the threepoint line when needed. “She (Thompson) is a tremendous asset for our team,” Flint said. “I don’t like to put it all on one player, it is more about what we can do as a team, but I can use her inside and out. She is going to be a big part of our team.” Reanen Goodspeed, Kylie Brigham and Samantha Barringer all got substantial playing time during last season’s title run and make up three of the eight players returning for Morris. However, Kaleigh Spencer, Sheridan Parker and Rebekah Oliver, all of whom started last year, have graduated. “We have some starters coming back but we also have three starters we have to replace,” Flint said. “We have to be willing to play at both ends of the court. I know these girls are going to work hard.” Oliver will be especially tough to replace, specifically when it comes to matching up with Franklin. She was the defensive stopper on last season’s box-and-one defense that shut down Campbell in the title game. “We are definitely going to be missing her (Oliver) defensively and on the boards,” Flint said. “She is a huge loss.” Winter Sports - THE DAILY STAR

G-MU rebuilds as challengers rise
CHERYL CLOUGH
Edmeston’s Josh Martin lofts a shot over G-MU defender Mickenson Clune during the Tri-Valley League championship game in Oneonta on Feb.10
NOV. 14, 15 AND 16, 2018
BY JARED BOMBA The 2018-2019 Tri-Valley League boys basketball season figures to be an interesting one as returning champions Gilbertsville-Mount Upton enter a rebuilding phase and several other teams look set to make a run at this year’s crown. G-MU topped Edmeston in the league final last season, but this year will provide a different set of challenges for the defending champs. “We had a very successful season last year but a lot of it was led by a talented group of seniors,” Raiders coach Greg Bonczkowski said. “Some returning players have actually transferred or moved on to a school outside of the area so we will be very young.” Losses to graduation include four starters from last year’s team. For the first time in four years, 1,000-point scorer Hunter Lockwood will not be running the point for the Raiders this winter. The size and defense of Mickenson Clune, another four-year starter for G-MU, will also be absent. SUNY Delhi freshman Ethan Butts is also gone, as well as two-year starter Bryant Hill. “That’s how it is in high school basketball. It goes in cycles,” Bonczkowski. “You have a talented group and you work hard to develop them and you have them for two to three years...then you have to start all over again.” The Raiders look to developing players from the 2017-2018 junior varsity to fill starting spots. “There’s a good group of JV kids moving up that will be able to help with leadership and on the court stuff, they just don’t have the experience playing in a varsity basketball game,” Bonczkowski said. If the young roster can adjust to the varsity speed of play and decision making, the Raiders can use that rising talent to make the most of what looks to be a rebuilding year. “It’s going to be an exciting year, I’m
looking forward to it,” Bonczkowski said. “I don’t think we can duplicate the team we had last year, it’s a totally different team. But if we like to play hard, smart and together, we can try to get back to sectionals and that would be a good learning experience.” Making development difficult for the young G-MU squad will be a group of teams with plenty of returners, led by last season’s runners-up, Edmeston. The Panthers lose only one starter, Justin McCall, to graduation. “Mainly we have to get our heads together and work as a team,” Edmeston coach Darren Belden said. “If we can play as a whole and don’t care who scores, that’s the main objective. If we do that we will be a tough team to beat.” Despite the return of starters Derek Lyon, Parker Robinson, Josh Martin and Luke Ough, Belden is not ready to tag his team for a deeper run than last season. “It’s pretty early to tell. I think we are going to be competitive as always,” Belden said. “I have a lot of starters back and the younger kids are looking better so we are going to make a run at the top four like we always do.” Belden expects Nathan Jennings and Logan Williams to lead the group of rising underclassmen as the Panthers look to dethrone G-MU. “We need those two to keep getting stronger,” Belden said. “They’ve grown a lot so if we can keep them strong and they play to their abilities they will be fine.” Joining the Panthers in the chase for the league title is a group of teams that return most of their players from last season. Bonczkowski and Belden both named Morris, Milford and Franklin as challengers. Morris will be led by Matt Murphy, who Belden called “pretty much unstoppable.” “He’s really tough to defend for most teams,” Belden said. “But you know Milford is going to be good. And Franklin will be in there too.” Winter Sports - THE DAILY STAR

DELAWARE LEAGUE GIRLS BASKETBALL
Hoyt sisters lead Stamford into 2018-2019 season BY BRIAN GOOD For the past eight seasons the Delaware League has belonged to the South Kortright girls basketball team. This year, led by sisters Madison and Melanie Hoyt, the Stamford Indians will be looking to dethrone the Rams. “We have an unusual mix of experience and youth,” Stamford head coach Lonnie Nickerson said. “We have one senior, one junior and the rest are all younger, but they’ve all had experience playing together.” Melanie Hoyt, a sophomore, led the team in scoring with 18 points per game last season on her way to an all-state third team selection. Madison Hoyt also averaged in double figures on her way to honorable mention all-state honors, and Nickerson said their chemistry is a big part of their success. “The Hoyt girls play so well together inside,” he said. “They’re both exceptional ball players.” The biggest question mark for Stamford coming into the 20182019 season is how it will replace the production of last season’s senior leader, Haley Steenland. Steenland, a 1,000-point varsity scorer, did a little bit of everything for the Indians, including leading through her determination. “Some nights shots don’t fall, no matter who you are, but Haley’s grit and effort was always there,” Nickerson said. “She always came to play and you need that to compete at a higher level. That’s something we will definitely try to emulate.” Leanna McAuliffe and Michaela Lynch will be expected to pick up some of the production lost

from Steenland’s departure. Nickerson said McAuliffe, who spent most of her time on junior varsity last season, will be expected to run point and handle the ball the majority of the time she’s on the floor. Lynch played limited time in 2017-2018 after suffering a knee injury but is expected to contribute as well. Back for South Kortright are seniors Jordan Finch, Bella DuBois and Ana Reinshagen, all starters on last season’s league championship team. Finch and DuBois use their size to get to the hoop, while Reinshagen’s speed and effort on both ends of the floor separate her. As always, if you’re going to be able to compete with SK, you’re going to have to figure out a way to handle its full-court pressure. “Finch and DuBois are tough to guard and can score in close,” Nickerson said. “And I thought Reinshagen set the tone for them night in and night out with the way she can press the ball. That’s the key with them, can you limit turnovers with their pressure?” Downsville, led by leading scorer Kailee Young, also expects to be in the mix for the Delaware League crown. The Eagles, Hunter-Tannersville, Davenport, Stamford and SK make for a Delaware League that is as deep as it has been in years. “The Delaware League has been improving the past few years and I think a lot of teams can compete this season,” Nickerson said. “There are going to be a lot of good teams on our schedule this year.” NOV. 14, 15 AND 16, 2018

DELAWARE LEAGUE BOYS BASKETBALL 18
Returning core boosts SK’s quest for fifth DL crown BY JARED BOMBA
In the Delaware League, the South Kortright boys are looking for a fifth consecutive league title. A strong core of returning starters and a promising group of players moving up from junior varsity give the Rams a chance to build on last season’s success. “Last year we had a very young team. The bulk of them were 10th-graders and we made it to the sectional final,” SK coach Aaron Kaufman said. “So we lost three seniors, and we are returning eight players, four or five who started at different times. It’s promising.” Kaufman, who spent more than 20 years coaching the junior varsity and modified teams at SK, is in his second year coaching the varsity squad. He will lean on returners Aidan Fox and Derek Burns to bring experience gained on the basketball court and the soccer field. “That experience is important to have. They’ve all been in big moments the past two years,” Kaufman said. “And we did have a pretty strong JV team last year, kids that are 11th-graders this year should mix in pretty well.” A group of juniors that includes Stanley Andersen, Chris Champlin and Kyle Funk as well as sophomore Charlie Kuhn will back up the core of seniors. Kaufman was pleased with how his large returning group has improved since last year. “This group of boys is very committed to basketball, the last two years especially,” Kaufman said. “I don’t want to be overconfident and I don’t want them to be overconfident. They have a job to do and I know I have a job to do. We have a motto - ‘One team, one goal, one opponent at a time.’”

MAC LEAGUE BOYS & GIRLS BASKETBALL
Unadilla Valley looks to build on section title BY BRIAN GOOD Few people expected the seventh-seeded Unadilla Valley boys basketball team to make a deep run in last season’s Section IV Class C playoffs. The Storm, led by leading scorer Andrew Jackson, took the section by surprise on the way to the school’s first ever section title. This season they won’t be catching anyone off guard, as UV returns four starters and will undoubtedly be the team to beat in the Midstate Athletic Conference (MAC). “Winning the section last season was great but it’s going to be something we need to adjust to this year,” Unadilla Valley head coach Matt Osborne said. “We talked about it on our first day of practice, we need to be aware that we won’t be surprising teams, we’ll have a bull’s-eye on our backs.” Jackson, a 6-3 guard, finished last year as the team’s leading scorer, rebounder and distributor, averaging 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists per game in his junior season. He’ll return in 2018-2019 looking to do much of the same for the Storm “He (Jackson) handles the ball very well, he shoots it well and just has a natural instinct for
the game,” Osborne said. “He is also an unselfish player, so when teams focus on him he finds the open guy and spreads the ball around.” Levi Rifanburg, Wyatt Grey and Cameron Osborne are the other three starters returning for UV. Rifanburg averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game a year ago, while Grey and Osborne were crucial in the team’s post season run. Coach Osborne said his team’s lack of a true point guard is something it will have to overcome, but UV enters the year with as much talent on its roster as anyone in the area. One team looking to take aim at the bull’seye on UV’s back is last season’s MAC champion, Walton. The Warriors finished the regular season with an 18-2 record, beating Delhi in the league title game on its way to the No. 1 seed in the Section IV Class C playoffs. Unlike UV, Walton lost a large portion of its scoring from last year’s team. Starters Jacob Beach, Gavin Griffin, Alex Tweedie and Shane Merwin all graduated, leaving the team looking to others for production. “We have to make up for a lot of lost scoring,”
Walton head coach David Gardepe said. “Beach, Tweedie and Merwin all averaged in double figures last season. We’ll have to play as a team if we’re going to replace that.” The only returning starter from last year’s league championship team is Dylan Jacob. Gardepe turns to three seniors to make up for the production lost. He expects Tommy Maguire, Jose Mirabal and Brett Charles to take on a much bigger roles this year. “We’re going to need good effort every night if we’re going to compete in the league this year,” Gardepe said. “If we’re going to get back (to the league title game) we need to play as a team and have some of our younger kids develop quickly. If we play together we will be just fine.” MAC foe Delhi lost Christian Aloisio and leading scorer Nate Caft to graduation, but Tyler Bruce, Alex Haight and Conor Aikens will all be back for the Bulldogs. With Greene and Sidney also bringing back talent from last year’s teams that qualified for sectionals, the MAC will have plenty of capable teams aiming for the top spot.
Bainbridge-Guilford seeks fifth straight MAC title BY JARED BOMBA The loss of two starters and increased depth in the MAC means that Bainbridge-Guilford faces challenges in vying for its fifth consecutive league title. Replacing point guard Jillian Cannistra and post player Megan Palmatier, who is in the process of beginning her freshman season at SUNY Oneonta, are the first obstacles the Bobcats will have to overcome. “Losing Jillian as our point guard is tough. But the real big loss is Megan Palmatier in the middle,” B-G coach Bob Conway said. “She was almost a double-double girl, so that really is a pretty big loss for us.”
Fortunately for Conway and the Bobcats, there is plenty of talent returning from the team that defeated Delhi in the league final for the fourth consecutive season last year. Abigail Selfridge, Erica Selfridge and Kori Thornton all return as starters. Abigail Selfridge was an all-state third team selection last season, and the rest of Conway’s core returners will provide plenty of offense. “All of them can score. They are definitely offensive weapons,” Conway said. “Abi is already a 1,000-point scorer, Erica is a really good three-point shooter and Kori is very adequate offensively. Offen-
sively I think we should be ok but we are not big.” Scoring won’t be a problem for the Bobcats, but defense and rebounding may be a challenge with a significantly smaller lineup this year. Abigail Selfridge provides post offense, but lacks the raw size to dominate defensively. “We’re not a big team so we have to do a lot on the boards,” Conway said. “That’s where we are going to put a lot of time in.” Conway said that newcomers Isabelle Decker and Alli Miller do not help too much in the size department, but will add more scoring to the already-potent B-G attack. So while the Bobcats will rely
Winter Sports - THE DAILY STAR
on their scoring, Conway said to expect a mix of offensive tempos. “We will definitely take our time on offense,” Conway said. “We will run and gun a little too but we will have sets to make sure we get the ball in the right shooter’s hands.” A strong crop of contesting teams will test the Bobcats. Conway mentioned Unatego and Greene, as well as perennial rival and 20172018 Class D state champs Delhi, as competitors within the league. “I think there’s a lot of other teams in our league that are going to be really good,” Conway said. “I think there is probably a little more competitiveness in the league this year so it’ll be a war.” NOV. 14, 15 AND 16, 2018
