STAFF REPORT South Kortright claimed the boys Delaware League title last season, cruising past Hunter-Tannersville, 86-37, in the final. The Rams rode that success throughout the postseason until they were shocked in the section semifinal round by fourth-seeded Edmeston to close the year at 20-2. Still, the Rams appear to be in great position win the league once again this year as Seth Ashline, Austin Lamport and Logan Kaufman lead the returning players for the Rams. That trio combined for 42 points in the league final win. Ashline and Lamport earned Delaware League First Team honors and Kaufman landed on the second team. SK coach Aaron Kaufman will have to replace the production of Aidan Fox, who graduated in the spring. Interestingly enough, Edmeston also ended Hunter-Tannersville’s season in the second round of the section tournament. The returners for the Wildcats are highlighted by Armand Aizstrauts and Kaeden Leach, who also earned First Team AllLeague honors a year ago. H-T did suffer significant departures, however, as coach Chris Glennon lost Jason McDevitt, Chris Lagzdins and Cole Matthews to graduation. The Wildcats and Rams will not have to wait long for a rematch as the two teams are set to square off Monday, Dec. 9, at Hunter-Tannersville. While SK likely remains the favorite to retain the league title, other teams to watch include Jefferson, which earned the sixth seed in the last year’s section tournament, and Margaretville, which also earned a section berth a year ago.

Rams to seek 11th straight league title STAFF REPORT For the last decade, South Kortright has ruled Delaware League girls basketball. The Rams downed Stamford in the league final last season before making it all the way to the state semifinals, finishing with an impressive 24-1 record. This year, South Kortright will look to make it an even 11 straight league titles while also aiming for its first state championship in 13 seasons. Starters Sonia Reeves, Emily Burns and Azalyn Brunson, an All-State Third Team honoree last season, all return to the Rams, and will surely be counted on to pick up where they left off a year ago. Coach Josh Burroughs won the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Coach of the Year Award for Section IV Class D last season and was named The Daily Star’s Coach of the Year. But he will have a new challenge on his hands as Jordan Finch, The Daily Star’s Player of the Year last season, was named to the all-state second team before moving on to SUNY Cobleskill to continue her basketball career. STAFF REPORT Unadilla Valley boys basketball has not lacked success in recent years, winning the Section IV Class C championship for the second consecutive season in 2018-2019. But the Storm figures to have a new challenge on its hands ahead of the new Midstate Athletic Conference season, with the departure of seniors Andrew Jackson, Levi Rifanburg and Wyatt Grey leaving the remaining starters, junior Cameron Osborne and senior Caleb Parker, with significant responsibility increases. “We lost almost 90% of our offense,” UV coach Matt Osborne said. “Those two guys (Cameron Osborne and Parker) started most of the big games in those years of sectional runs and played a big part in getting there last year. They will have to carry the load and score a lot more than they have in the past.” The departure of those three seniors leave a sizable hole as Jackson was named to the All-State Second Team, and Rifanburg landed on the ninth team. While Osborne said he does not expect anyone to come in an immediately fill in lost production, there are newcomers he said he expects to fill in adequately. “It’s going to be by committee,” Osborne said. “We have a pretty good program from modified to the varsity with coaches that have coached for many years, and I’ve been here for 23. So we have a system and a program. We have our philosophy and it will be different this year, with more speed and quickness instead of size.” Devon Fairchild, a junior, will be expected to take some ballhandling duties for the Storm, and classmate Tim Postma will be needed as an inside presence. Blaine Rifanburg will also see more time in his junior year. Unfortunately for UV, the injury bug has already bitten with juniors Brock Davis and

Kyler Butts out for at least several weeks with injuries sustained during the fall. “We are going to have a tough time scoring points,” Osborne said. “We have a lot of pride. Devon, Blaine and Timmy were on the team and practiced against really good players the last few years. So that pride is going to be a big thing.” The good news for UV is that its biggest moments came with its best defensive performances, including a 42-39 win over Delhi in the MAC final and a 50-29 defeat of Lansing in the section final. Expect the Storm to lean on that side of the game again as Osborne looks to add to his pair of section titles and five league crowns.

Delhi may be the favorite entering the new campaign as they lost just one player, Conor Aikens, from last season. Aikens was an all-conference honoree and earned an honorable mention from the state in Class C in his senior season. “Conor was a big loss, but he was literally the only senior on last year’s roster. It was a very good player that we lost, but we have a lot coming back,” Delhi coach Warren Kelly said. “Hopefully we can do things a little crisper offensively. Sometimes we had trouble scoring last year and relied on our defense to keep us in games.” An already-talented team with another year of maturity may have the Bulldogs peaking at a good time. Alex Haight will return for his junior season after mirroring Aikens’ honors last season. Seniors Tyler Bruce and Rich LaLosh also figure to play a big part again while juniors Luke Brannigan and Logan Aikens will step into more responsibility. Seniors Preston VanWie and Mike Griswold will also enter the fold in the new season. Delhi parlayed its defensive prowess into several entertaining games in 2018-2019, and held a productive UV team to 42 points in the league final. But Kelly is hoping to see improvement on the other end of the court with a more experienced team in 2019-2020. “I really think what needs to improve is our offense. STAFF REPORT While five consecutive Midstate Athletic Conference championships may make Bainbridge-Guilford the team with the biggest target on its back ahead of the 2019-2020 MAC girls basketball season, Bobcats coach Bob Conway said his team is not the favorite entering the campaign. “We’ve lost some key players over the last couple years, so we will have to do a lot of work to get back there,” Conway said. “Unatego will be the favorite with basically their whole team back.” The Bobcats and Spartans met on three occasions last season, with B-G winning the regular-season meeting and notching a 53-42 decision in the MAC final. But the third meeting went to Unatego as the youthful Spartans earned a 36-26 win in the Section IV Class C semifinals. It won’t be any easier this season for B-G, which lost Abi Selfridge to graduation after an 18-3 campaign last year. Her younger sister, junior Erica Selfridge, will also not rejoin to the team. Fortunately for the Bobcats, Macie Leizear returns for her senior season after tearing her ACL in last season’s league final and missing the section tournament. Conway said Leizear will need a larger contribution from junior Taylor Parsons and quick adjustments to the varsity game from freshman Celeste Baldwin. “It’s going to be tough,” Conway said. “We’re going to be trying to fill in the gaps and build back up to be competitive.” Unatego lost Morgan Newman to graduation and junior Dana Stepp will not return to the team, but the Spartans nonetheless welcome back the bulk of a squad that finished last season with a 19-3 record and a section final appearance.

Spartans coach Bob Zeh faces a different challenge, however, as eight of his 11 players missed much of preseason as members of the girls soccer team that reached the state final four. “I’m really happy for them. I’ve had the good fortune to make final fours and it’s something they’ll never forget,” Zeh said. “There’s no question we will be behind everybody, but it’s a good setback.” A group of underclassmen forms Unatego’s core again this year, featuring names that local soccer fans will find familiar. Junior sisters Meghan Perry and Morgan Perry will lead the charge down low for the Spartans, with a host of returning contributors joining them. “Hopefully Meghan and Morgan can take it up a notch. It’ll be their fourth year on varsity,” Zeh said. “But we are a lot more than just them. We will have a little more depth this year I think.” Paige McCoy and Hali Lucia will return for their senior seasons, and Zeh noted junior Jenn Faulkner as well as sophomores Alexa Lucia and Tatum Codington as returning contributors. Freshmen Maddie Wilsey and Kylie Mussaw figure to see substantial time as well for Unatego. The Spartans have lined up a difficult non-conference schedule, with games against Oneonta, Union-Endicott and Utica Notre Dame on top of a challenging conference slate. Zeh said the tough non-conference schedule is aimed at preparing his team for its primary goal, to win the MAC title, which looks to be a challenge as both Conway and Zeh noted a host of other challengers in the conference. Greene, Walton and Delhi, which is just two seasons removed from a Class D state title, were mentioned along with a handful of other competitors in one of the area’s deepest leagues. STAFF REPORT Like a lot of teams, Edmeston will likely spend a few moments early in the season missing departures from the previous season. The loss of all-state performer Parker Robinson along with starters Luke Ough and Derek Lyons will take some getting used to as the Panthers look to repeat as Tri-Valley League champions after winning it for the first time in 37 years last season. Fortunately for coach Darren Belden’s team, Josh Martin will return for his junior season after leading Edmeston to the league title and section final last season as a sophomore. Martin was named to the All-State Second Team, giving him the highest honor among local Class D players. “Any coach is glad to have him back. He’s been working hard all summer right through the fall, so he is looking really good,” Belden said. “He runs the offense for us and the team, too, really. He is almost like a coach out on the court.” Belden will look for increased production from a senior trio of Nathan Jennings, Garrett Lum and Logan Williams. “They will be playing bigger roles, hopefully filling in for the three we lost, and I really think they can,” Belden said. He also mentioned the arrival of junior Greg DeVries as an inside force for the Panthers during his first season on varsity. The acclimation of newer players will need to be accelerated as Belden put together a challenging schedule for the Panthers. Cooperstown, Sidney,

Canajoharie and South Kortright highlight a difficult non-league schedule designed to prepare Edmeston for another section run. While the Panthers enter with some uncertainties, Belden said figuring out a team dynamic was key for his side last year, and the promise of community support incentivizes his team to do so again this year. “Last year we gelled as a team. That was our main goal going in. The first goal was to get everybody to play as a team,” Belden said. “We thought if we did play as a team that we had a pretty good shot at the league and making a run in sectionals. “They appreciate the community support a ton. Last year when we were going to the championship having the four corners lined with parents and fans was great. Coming back, it was even bigger. The support was just humongous.” The rest of the league is difficult to call as many of the league’s top performers from a season ago have graduated. Matt Murphy, who landed on the All-State Fourth Team in Class D, led Morris back to the league final a year ago, but he departed along with all-league performer Nate Edwards for the Mustangs. Gavin Bonczkowski returns for a Gilbertsville-Mount Upton team looking to return to the top of the TVL after winning it in 2017-2018, but all-league performer Carson Dutcher is gone from Franklin, and Milford lost all-state honorees Cian Hall and Wynn Williams.

Campbell cohort to again lead reigning TVL champ Franklin STAFF REPORT In the Tri-Valley League, Franklin hopes to repeat as league champions. The Purple Devils beat Morris, 51-35, in the final last season, after the Mustangs won the year prior in a comeback thriller. Franklin earned the second seed in the section tournament and made it all the way to the final before South Kortright rolled past the Purple Devils, 44-13, to earn the section’s state berth. Kayla Campbell and Marisa Campbell are back as sophomores for Franklin after each being named All-TVL first teamers a year ago. Kayla Campbell was one of two area players, along with South Kortright’s Jordan Finch, to be named to the All-State Second Team, and will again lead the Purple Devils. Alyssa Nowhitney and Madelynn Ackley will look to aide the Campbell sisters as returning contributors. The Purple Devils and coach Mike Dutcher saw four seniors graduate including league second-teamer Julie Archibald, Olivia Hyzer, Rachel Cobane and Adrianna Sperry. Goodspeed led the Mustangs with seven points in the league final loss to the Purple Devils and finished the year with second-team honors, while Thompson earn all-league first team honors. Carissa Richards will be given more responsibility this season after starring as an eighth-grader in 2018-19. Laurens, Davenport and Schenevus make up a pursuit group after each earning a place in the section tournament a year ago.
