Otsego
COUNTY
Community Guide
OUR MISSION
To continually improve the overall business climate in the region; to strive for an atmosphere which attracts investment; to build a positive, forward-thinking business community; and to partner with government, groups, individuals and institutions.
OUR VISION
To be a proactive business organization in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation, providing value and advocacy to our members with an influential voice dedicated to economic success and quality of life in Otsego County.
OUR CORE VALUES
We are here to serve our members. We believe in education and the value of programs and services that contribute to our members’ success. We welcome opportunities for collaboration and cooperation, inspiring a community vision.
OTSEGO COUNTY IS BACK IN BUSINESS!
After a three-year journey through the COVID-19 pandemic, Otsego County communities have emerged energized, and we are ready for the future. While all residents, businesses and organizations felt the weight of this challenging period, our present and future look bright.
Tourism and hospitality businesses have fully reopened and over 400,000 visitors have flooded back to experience our natural beauty, the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the numerous youth summer baseball camps and the unique towns and historic villages that have so much to offer. Hotels are once again buzzing with activity and local restaurants and taverns are serving local and traveling customers once more.
Our two institutions of higher education, SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College, are fully open with thousands of students in attendance. This means that the local arts, music, and cultural scene are also back in full swing. The rebirth of the Downtown Oneonta community is symbolized by the beautiful tree-lined Main Street in full bloom.
Of course, local schools, local healthcare operations, charities, special needs organizations and municipal police and fire department employees never ceased working for the well-being of our communities and are stronger than ever. Their steadfast service to the citizens of this county is deeply appreciated by all. The term “essential personnel” never adequately described the dedication of these individuals in the past, the present and the future.
Otsego County is a place of community, volunteerism, neighbors, and friends. It is also a place of planning, growth, investment, and collaboration. It is exciting to be a part of this county, and I invite everyone to visit, fall in love with Otsego County, and join the thousands who have done the same and decided to stay. We welcome you!

CITY Oneonta
TOWNS
Otsego County is in central New York State, to the west of Albany, southeast of Utica, and northeast of Binghamton. The county is at the confluence of the Central New York Region, the Mohawk Valley Region, and the Southern Tier Region of New York State. Additionally, we are considered as the northernmost county of the Appalachian Region that stretches to the southwest and includes sections of 13 states. As such, we are uniquely positioned to provide easy access to adjacent markets.
Otsego County combines the natural beauty of rural living with all the excitement and convenience of New York’s cities. Shoppers enjoy plenty of options, from the rapidly growing Southside Mall in Oneonta, major “box store” locations, multiple automotive dealerships, grocery store options and the local retail gems that can be found on the picturesque Main Streets throughout the
county. Our central position, with easy interstate access, provides comprehensive connectivity to transportation corridors, metropolitan areas, vast recreational venues, and world-class tourism destinations, with both Albany and Binghamton within an hour’s drive.
Otsego County is home to more than 1,200 businesses. The wide variety of products manufactured here includes communications equipment, integrated circuits, pharmaceuticals, transportation equipment, plastic and rubber products, and food and beverage. Other major employers include insurance companies, colleges, healthcare facilities, and retailers. The regional economy benefits from high-technology manufacturing companies such as Corning, Inc., Unison Industries, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Raymond Corporation, Universal Instruments, and others.
Meanwhile, the County has maintained its agribusiness, farming, and forestry base. Otsego County ranked in the top 20 counties in the state for the value of agricultural products sold for six different commodity groups, including milk production, horses, Christmas trees, and floriculture.
Otsego County NY
BY THE NUMBERS
The name Otsego is from a Mohawk or Oneida word meaning “place of the rock.”
Otsego County features a true four-season experience for residents and visitors alike. Warm days and cool nights make Summer here the stuff of legends. Otsego Lake and Goodyear Lake offer a range of water sports and beautiful vistas. The hiking trails and camping opportunities are numerous and varied. Warm days and cool nights make this region a long sought-after refuge from the heat, hustle, and bustle of metropolitan centers throughout the Northeast. Fall is a long, beautiful season, with steady, warm daytime temperatures. The spectacular color array of autumn foliage usually peaks in early to mid-October bringing in thousands of visitors to bask in its glory. Winter brings its own kind of beauty with beautiful snow-covered landscapes and traditional Holiday activities. Spring brings a rebirth of our green covered hills, the reemergence of our abundant wildlife and the blooming wildflowers throughout the region. If you have a favorite season, Otsego County has it!
EDUCATION
Otsego County has some of the best public-school systems in upstate New York. The county is rural in nature, so its schools feature relatively small class sizes. This contributes to the schools in the county having a true community feeling, enhancing success for the students and pride among the residents. The county is home to two respected four-year institutions of higher learning in SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College offering degree centered educational opportunities to thousands of students. Springbrook, a local nonprofit organization, offers a wide range of educational and developmental services to those with developmental disabilities. They provide a much-needed pathway for these individuals, adding to their overall quality of life. The same can be said for Pathfinder Village, who helps care for hundreds of residents with Down Syndrome. This facility in Edmeston creates a community of comfort, stability, and education for its residents with an expanding focus on community service and interaction.
TOURISM
In Otsego County, we proudly boast some of the finest tourism draws in America. The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown is a bucket-list experience for millions of people throughout the world. That baseball experience is extended to hundreds of youth teams who flock to the area to attend summer baseball camps. Cooperstown All-Star Village and Cooperstown Dreams Park feature a full schedule of week-long youth tournaments that draw teams from coast-to-coast for the high level of play and beauty of the surrounding area. With additional visitors to unique destinations such as Brewery Ommegang, Glimmerglass Opera, The Catskill Symphony Orchestra, the Fenimore Chamber Orchestra, Foothills Performing Arts Center, Fenimore Art Museum, The Farmers Museum and others, tourism provides a significant cultural and economic impact on Otsego County.
HEALTHCARE
Otsego County is a major healthcare center of upstate New York. The Bassett Healthcare Network, one of the most important providers of rural health services in New York, is headquartered here. The Network has been ranked as one of the top one hundred most integrated health systems in the nation. The hub of the Network is Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, located in the county seat of Cooperstown. The Network encompasses A.O. Fox Hospital, in Oneonta, as well as skilled nursing facilities, community clinics and school-based health centers. Springbrook, with various locations in the county, offers quality care and instruction to children with development disabilities. This region-wide commitment to accessible community focused healthcare is a major benefit to residents of our county and one we are blessed to enjoy.
ARTS, CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT
As Otsego County is home to two colleges, it boasts a vibrant arts and entertainment community. CANO (Community Arts Network of Oneonta) offers local arts exhibitions, artistic instruction courses and showcases art & culture of all types in the annual Festival of the Arts each summer. On any given night, residents and visitors alike can choose from films or live performances at Foothills Performing Arts Center, the Glimmerglass Opera Festival, or live jazz at the B Side Ballroom. Community Theatre performances at Orpheus Theatre and just over the county line at the Franklin Stage Company offer high quality performances in intimate settings. Rooted in our historic roots of a community that values artistic expression of all types, Otsego County is dedicated to keeping this treasure alive and well.

PATHFINDER VILLAGE
Located in the northwest corner of the county near the village of Edmeston, Pathfinder Village is a community where people who have Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities discover their own value and talents, and share these gifts with others. Here, residents are valued for their abilities and contributions. They are encouraged to choose friends and develop goals.
Pathfinder is a friendly, beautiful, and pristine country Village where residents become involved and find opportunities. Their roots go back to 1922, when two nurses opened the Otsego School in Edmeston, NY, to provide a caring and positive environment for children with Down syndrome. This community has evolved into a vital part of the region, hosting youth soccer tournaments on its athletic fields, providing sought-after goods in its Bakery and delivering fresh local produce to area citizens in need of quality nutritional food they would otherwise be without. Pathfinder is a true community partner.
FLY CREEK CIDER MILL
Now in its 166th year, diversification and innovation characterize the Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard. The seed for the Mill’s creation was planted long ago by Johnny Appleseed who traveled west sowing apple seeds that would produce cider apples to quench the thirst of early pioneers. Dutch settlers in Fly Creek Valley called the low-lying swampy area “vlie.” Over time “vlie” turned into “fly,” hence the hamlet’s unusual name. They developed Johnny’s apple orchards for pressing the juice to be fermented into hard cider and wine. Refrigeration had not yet developed so these hard ciders and apple wines that were shelf stable and safe to drink became the beverage of choice – three meals a day.
The Mill has been owned by the Kane family since 1962, with significant restorations having been performed over two generations. The current owner, Bill Michaels, continued the tradition of reinvestment with the installation of modern restrooms, an interior stairway, cold-storage facilities, an expanded restaurant and a bakery. He also expanded the fall operation into the
summer tourist months and added hard-to-find specialty foods.
Programming now includes a full season of festivals and special events plus exhibits throughout the Mill were improved. He continued another tradition of the past by becoming a New York State Farm Winery in 2002 offering hard ciders and apple wines.
Holy Roman Emperor King Charles V visited medieval Brussels in 1549 with hundreds from his Royal Court. To welcome the King, merchants, vendors, cooks, brewers, musicians, theater troupes, dancers and more lined up around the city walls and joined in a celebration as his entourage passed by. That parade became known as the “Ommegang,” a word that variously means “coming together” and “walking about.” The Brussels Ommegang Festival continues to this day.
Over a century ago, Belgian breweries Duvel Moortgat, Affligem, and Scaldis join with importers/entrepreneurs Don Feinberg and Wendy Littlefield to build an authentic Belgian-style farmstead brewery in Cooperstown, NY. They locate this cultural transplant on an old 140-acre hop farm in the Susquehanna River valley, in a part of upstate New York once known as Nova Belgium.
Today, Brewery Ommegang offers a variety of beers and ciders to visitors at an expanded and radically
renovated Tap House with a 20-tap bar, 10-tap tasting room, enlarged café and kitchen, covered patio and expanded store, enabling them to properly host several hundred visitors at a time. Their natural amphitheater hosts summer concerts each year where up to 15,000 patrons quench their thirst for music and drink for each performance.
NATIONAL BASEBALL HALL OF FAME
Cooperstown philanthropist Stephen C. Clark – seeking a way to celebrate and protect the National Pastime as well as an economic engine for Cooperstown – asked National League president Ford C. Frick if he would support the establishment of a Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. The idea was welcomed, and in 1936 the inaugural Hall of Fame class of Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner was elected.
But in the years following the opening of the Hall of Fame on June 12, 1939, the Museum has become much more than just home to baseball’s biggest stars. The Hall of Fame is the keeper of the game.
The Hall of Fame’s collections contain more than 40,000 three-dimensional artifacts – such as bats, balls, gloves
and uniforms – donated by players and fans who want to see history preserved. The Museum’s curators use the artifacts – whose number grows by about 400 each year –to tell the story of the National Pastime through exhibits. The Museum itself is a melding of five buildings sewn together via several renovation and expansion programs. Today, the Museum easily accommodates more than 3,000 visitors per day during the peak season.
The artifact collection is housed in climate-controlled rooms to protect the delicate leather, fabric and wood materials used in baseball. The Museum promises –in exchange for the donation of an artifact – to care for an item in perpetuity, which means the effects of temperature and humidity must be constantly regulated. It is the living, breathing history of America’s National Pastime.

HARTWICK
Hartwick Seminary president and principal Charles Myers was in 1926 the first to refer to “a Greater Hartwick,” although the idea of expanding Hartwick into a four-year college long predated his vision. Myers brought new determination to the effort, and that year he convinced the Board of Trustees to authorize a campaign to raise $500,000 for that purpose, among others. Initially the campaign seemed like it would go the way of several previous unsuccessful fundraising efforts. However, in March of 1927 Hartwick’s luck finally changed. The nearby city of Oneonta’s Chamber of Commerce made a proposal: if the Seminary would raise $400,000, the city
would contribute $200,000 and provide land suitable for the present and future needs of an institution. Oneonta’s thriving business community welcomed the idea of being home to a four-year college. The seminary trustees voted quickly and unanimously to recommend acceptance of the proposal and a week later the New York Synod delegates accepted it. According to Charles W. Leitzell who then served as president of both the Seminary board and synod, by building a new college in Oneonta “the old traditions will be given fertile soil in which to reach an even greater maturity and the sacred trust given by John Christopher Hartwick will not have failed.”
Founded in 1797 by John Christopher Hartwick, Hartwick is proud to be one of the oldest colleges in the country and the first Lutheran Seminary in the United States.
