Who’s Opening and Where Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) plans to open a Whole Foods Market in the Almaden area of San Jose, CA this year. The company is also slated to open a market along The Alameda in the Rose Garden Area of San Jose during 2011. The TJX Cos., Inc. (508-390-3000) will open a T.J. Maxx store at New Bern Mall, located in New Bern, NC, during the spring and will serve as a junior anchor at the center. The tenant will join rue21, which opened during August 2009, at the mall, which is currently undergoing extensive renovations. LAX World, Inc. (410-321-7333) plans to open a LAX World store in Bethesda, MD. The company opened stores, offering lacrosse equipment, clothing and accessories, at York Galleria Mall in York, PA during October 2009 and, more recently, at Maple Lawn in Howard County, MD. The company also recently expanded an existing store located at The Shops at Kenilworth in Towson, MD and moved its Bel Air, MD store from South Main Street to a larger space at Hartford Mall. The company cites the availability of real estate deals in a depressed market as reason for its current expansion plans.

Bank of Santa Clarita (661-362-6004) will open a bank location in a portion of a 15,240 sq.ft. former Ethan Allen site located along Citrus Street in Santa Clarita, CA. The company acquired the building and plans to relocate its headquarters in the remainder of the space. The company currently operates three bank branches throughout the city. Giant Eagle, Inc. (412-963-6200) plans to renovate seven GetGo convenience stores this year. The renovations will bring the stores in line with the company’s new concept, featuring a GLA of 5,600 sq.ft. with eight gasoline dispensers and four biodiesel pumps along with an enlarged foodservice area. The concept will be implemented for all the company’s future openings. The company currently operates 154 GetGo convenience stores along with 160 Giant Eagle supermarkets throughout select areas of OH and PA. Darden Restaurants, Inc. (407-2454000) plans to open an Olive Garden Italian restaurant along Route 13 in Ithaca, NY. The restaurant will locate on a pad site of a Kmart-anchored center and will join Panera Bread.

Costco Wholesale Corp. (425-313-8000) plans to open between 16 to 18 Costco stores this year, with roughly 25% of the stores opening outside the U.S. Included in this number is a 154,114 sq.ft. warehouse store with a 16-pump gasoline station at Reynolds Ranch, a development project located at the intersection of Highway 99 and Harney Lane in Lodi, CA, which the company plans to open during the fall. The company plans to increase the number of openings for 2011 and 2012 to the low 20s, with eventual plans to open between 25 and 29 stores annually. The company currently operates 566 stores, including 413 units operating in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, 77 in Canada, 32 in Mexico, 22 throughout Japan, Korea and Taiwan, 21 in the United Kingdom and one in Australia. Bass Pro Shops, Inc. (417-873-5000) plans to open a 130,000 sq.ft. Bass Pro Shop at Canal Side, a one million sq.ft. mixed-use project situated on 20 acres along Main Street in Buffalo, NY. The project will be developed in phases and will include retail, restaurant, entertainment, office and hospitality components. Openings are slated to begin during the latter part of 2011.

Lease Signings

Who’s Opening and Where Stage Stores, Inc. (713-667-5601) will open a Goody’s Family Clothing store at Gardenside Shopping Center, located in Henderson, KY, during March. The store will open in the site of a former Goody’s Family Clothing, which was closed when Goody’s Family Clothing, Inc. filed for bankruptcy and liquidated during the early part of 2009. Stage Stores acquired the rights to the Goody’s trade name and plans to use it in as many 50 markets where the brand remains recognizable to customers. The company has opened 13 Goody’s stores since acquiring the trade name and plans to open as many as 35 more in the coming years. The company currently operates 758 stores nationwide throughout 39 states under the Peebles, Bealls, Palais Royal, Stage and Goody’s Family Clothing trade names. Zanotto’s (408-294-9151) will open a Zanotto’s Family Market in a former PW Market location at the intersection of Cherry Avenue and Foxworthy Avenue in San Jose, CA. Dollar General Corp. (615-855-4000) plans to open 600 Dollar General discount merchandise stores this year and remodel another 500 stores. The company currently operates 8,700 locations nationwide. Esprit Holdings (HK: 011-852-2765-4321) plans to open 50 Esprit stores this year, down from initial projections of between 60 and 80 stores. The majority of the locations will be in Europe and Asia, with a smaller number of openings throughout North America. Tractor Supply Co. (615-366-4600) will open a 21,656 sq.ft. store along Cornwell Drive in Bridgeton, NJ during April. The opening will be the company’s 10th in the state and will offer lawn and garden items along with animal care products. The company currently operates 912 stores nationwide throughout 44 states. Vallarta Supermarkets, Inc. (818-898-0088) plans to open a Vallarta Supermarket in a former Sportsman’s Warehouse space at Orchard Walk, a center located in Visalia, CA, during the spring. The company also plans to open a store in Tulare, CA during the latter part of this year or in the early part of 2011. Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) plans to open a 160,000 sq.ft. Lowe’s Home Improvement store on a 16-acre parcel located along Burgin Parkway in Quincy, MA. The home improvement superstore is D M slated to open during September.

H&R Retail (301-656-3030) negotiated a sublease with Giant Food of Maryland for a 19,150 sq.ft. space at Stemmers Run Road in Essex, MD. The company represented the subtenant in the transaction.
