Who’s Opening and Where Coach, Inc. (212-594-1850) is slated to open a Coach store in Columbia Center, a mall located in Kennewick, WA, during May as part of a plan to open 40 stores nationwide. The stores sell leather and mixed-media handbags and accessories. Safeway, Inc. (925-467-3000) plans to open 10 Safeway supermarkets this year, including a location in Kauai, HI, and remodel 135. The stores will be built or remodeled to the company’s Lifestyle concept. The company opened 20 Lifestyleformat stores during 2008 while remodeling 232 and closing 24. The company currently operates 1,739 supermarkets nationwide and throughout Canada. Hot Topic, Inc. (626-839-4681) has reduced its planned openings for Hot Topic and Torrid stores this year and only plans to open a few stores for each brand. The company also plans to remodel or relocate between 20 and 25 Hot Topic stores while closing 10 Hot Topic and five Torrid stores. During the fourth quarter of 2008, the company opened one Hot Topic and two EXP_AD_5023_dealmaker1208.qxd:Layout Torrid locations while closing three Hot Topic stores and one Torrid.

The Learning Game (408-996-8064) plans to open a location along North De Anza Boulevard in Cupertino, CA in a center that is currently under construction. The store sells interactive learning materials for children to schools, teachers and parents. The stores, the first of which will launch during June, will carry apparel targeted towards children ages seven to 12. rue21, Inc. (724-776-9780) will open a 6,500 sq.ft. rue21 store at Louisiana Boardwalk, a lifestyle center located in Bossier City, LA. The opening will replace a smaller location within the center. Dunkin’ Brands, Inc (781-737-3000), through franchisee RFS, LLC, is slated to open 21 Dunkin’ Donuts locations throughout the Birmingham, AL metropolitan area during the next six years. The company opened its first location in the state, a shop in Dothan, during February and plans to open 142 stores throughout the state over the next several years. American Apparel, Inc. (213-488-0226) is slated to open between 25 and 30 American Apparel locations this year. During the first quarter, the company has opened five of the stores, selling fashion basics crafted under fair trade practices, and has nine more under development. The company currently operates 260 units nationwide and internationally. Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) plans to open a 33,400 sq.ft. Nordstrom Rack location at Lakewood Center, a 2.88 million sq.ft. center located in Lakewood, CA, during the fall of 2010. The stores sell heavily-discounted name-brand apparel and accessories for men, women and children. Forever 21 is also slated to open a store in the center, in a former Mervyn’s site, this year.
