Who’s Opening and Where Destination Maternity Corp. (215-8732200) plans to open between 12 and 17 stores this year, with between nine and 13 of the openings in the company’s multi-brand concept, Destination Maternity Superstore. Additionally, the company plans to shutter between 33 and 48 stores, with between 22 and 32 closings related to the opening of multi-brand stores. The company is also looking to expand internationally during the next several years, having signed franchise agreements in India and throughout the Middle East. The company currently operates 721 stores nationwide and throughout Canada under the Destination Maternity, Motherhood Maternity and A Pea in the Pod trade names. Meijer, Inc. (616-453-6711) will open a 102,000 sq.ft. Meijer store in Orland Park, IL later this year. The opening is the second of two smaller-format, grocery-oriented stores the company is testing in the Chicago, IL area. The stores, roughly half the square footage of the company’s traditional floor plans, are designed to allow the company to enter more dense urban markets. The first smaller floor plan store opened during January in Chicago.
Cinemark Holdings, Inc. (972-665-1000) will open a 12-screen Cinemark movie theater at Sandusky Mall, a one million sq.ft. center located along Milan Road in Sandusky, OH. Groundbreaking commenced last month and the theater is slated to open prior to this year’s holiday season. The theater will replace the company’s existing Sandusky cinema, and the existing site will close upon the new location’s opening. The company currently operates 426 theaters with a total of 4,908 screens throughout 39 states nationwide in addition to Canada and 13 countries in Central and South America. Chick-fil-A, Inc. (404-765-8000) will open 78 Chick-fil-A restaurants this year, 66 of which will be freestanding locations. The restaurants serve chicken sandwiches along with salads and desserts. Through a franchisee, the company recently opened a 4,287 sq.ft. restaurant at the intersection of Jackson Street and MacArthur Drive in Alexandria, LA, its second in the city. During 2009, the company opened 69 freestanding locations, one mall location and 13 licensed locations. The company currently operates 1,600 units nationwide throughout 37 states and Washington, DC.
The Kroger Co. (513-762-4000) will open a 123,000 sq.ft. Kroger Marketplace at Broad Street Commons, located at the intersection of East Broad Street and Highway 360 in Mansfield, TX. The supermarket includes a 55,000 sq.ft. general merchandise department and a 68,000 sq.ft. grocery department, as well as a gas station. The company also plans to open a Kroger Marketplace at Alliance Town Center, located in northern Ft. Worth, TX. The Mansfield location is slated to open during the summer of 2011. Dollar General Corp. (615-855-4000) will open a Dollar General in Newton, AL next month as part of a plan to open 600 stores this year. The company currently operates 8,800 discount stores nationwide throughout 35 states. Joe’s Jeans, Inc. (323-837-3700) plans to open nine Joe’s Jeans Outlet stores during the second and third quarters of this year. The stores carry denim apparel for men, women and children, in addition to accessories. The openings come as part of a partnership with Simon Property Group and the locations will be in Simon-operated centers.
