THE HERBERGER STUDENT CENTER

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

The main concept behind the design of the herberger student center is “MOVEMENT.” The buildings are organized and placed to create circulation in and around different spaces. with the same idea in mind, the shapes of the buildings share the same concept by slightly shifting each layer from bottom to top.

SITE PLAN 1/8”=1’

DESIGN PROCESSES:

The design originally came from the stacking of volumes layer by layer. Each layer was twisted before being glued in place. The roof is divided between two layers and shifted in larger angles in order to create a optimal amount of shades for the outdoor space between and around the buildings.

INTERACTION:

The reason for preserving the movement of walls inside the interior space of the cafe is to provide an engaging environment for the visitors. On the other hand, the interior wall of the galleries are smooth to creat a calm and simple atmosphere, in this case, people can focus on the artwork more than on the space. The height of the main gallery, the minor gallery, and the cafe are 18ft, 12ft, and 10ft. The purpose of setting them in different height is to define diverse uses of each space.
