Showc ase 2012 is here! We hope you enjoy the presentation of IceList. What you see and experience with Showcase is the culmination of many hours of dedicated involvement by volunteers and skaters. Showcase highlights the many talents that Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club members possess and are willing to share for the love and support of skating. As a club, we focus on “inspiring a life-long passion for excellence through skating.” Showcase provides the opportunity to promote this vision by bringing together all ages and stages of skaters to work together with the common goal of putting on a great performance. We thank Showcase Artistic Director, Rebecca Babb and Showcase Co-Chairs, Alison Smerchinski and Hilary Camilleri for sharing their passion and dedication with our skaters. Showcase and KWSC cannot operate successfully without the contributions of many volunteers and a dedicated staff and coaching team. On behalf of the volunteer Board of Directors, I would like to thank not only the Showcase volunteers you will find listed in this program but all of those who make contributions of time, expertise and energy throughout the year. It is greatly appreciated! On behalf of the Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club and the IceList performers, thank you to Showcase sponsors, program advertisers, ticket purchasers and family members for your contributions that allow our skaters to do more of what they love to do….skate!

Skating in a c lub I think about my early skating days in a small club in Nova Scotia and try to compare that experience to skating experiences at KWSC. It is not the same in most ways but it is the same in so many others ways.
AWARD WINNING SALON AND SPA
Skating is, for the most part an individual sport. Having a team of friends around you while you train, test and compete is one of the best parts of being in a club. Skaters form lifelong friendships as they learn and grow. They get an “Axel” and sometimes they “lose an Axel” but almost always while training with others who are setting their own goals and pursuing their dreams. These shared experiences help build relationships between skaters which help them get through the tough times. We all know the benefits of skating - whether you are an Elite skater competing at the Canadian Championships or one of our amazing Starskaters preparing for their next test - the training and preparation are the same. We learn to manage our time with daily reminders about commitments to each phase of the sport. Skaters learn to concentrate on skill acquisition, skill training and skill performance. Watch a pre-school session or a CanSkate session and all these same challenges exist - maybe it is the first time they stand up and start to move, or it is the first lap of the ice, or it could be a skater in our hockey program working to improve their stride and balance. All skaters share these same challenges on a daily, weekly and seasonal basis. I watch skaters at transitional times during their on and off ice activities. The activity and energy is something to see. If you have a chance and your timing is right you can see a Canadian Champion on an elliptical training machine beside a 12 year old future star. The future star is not distracted, they are on task, just sharing space and training with a club mate. This interaction happens on a daily basis. Sometimes we take it for granted but in this individual sport it is nice to have a team mate. Sometimes your team mate is someone you skate with on a session, sometimes they are skaters you can also watch on T.V. Regardless of who they are you can be sure the goals are very similar. KWSC is a huge skating club. We operate out of many arenas around the twin cities and sometimes we don’t see each other as much as you might in a smaller club. Events like Showcase are moments in time when we meet other members and make new friends. From Preschool to Elite skaters everyone will train for this show together and perform their very best. Enjoy the show and remember the variety of skaters who have come together as a team to show you their skills and their true joy of skating. Team KWSC will be performing today so have fun and enjoy! ~ Paul MacIntosh Skating Programs Manager KWSC

The Spirit of V olu n teeris m at K W SC By: Paul Mallet
Showcase is a time to show off the many talents of our skaters, whether young or old, recreational or competitive, just learning to skate, or seasoned veteran. It’s also a time for our volunteers to come together and show what can be accomplished when everyone works together. Our team has worked countless hours behind the scenes to make this a memorable day. Months ago planning and work began on costumes, publicity, sponsorship, registration, graphic design, ticket sales, fundraising, and more; and today our volunteers have shifted their focus to the production, including lighting, security, and dressing rooms. Yes, KWSC volunteers are undeniably generous and hardworking; but volunteering at KWSC also has its rewards. The joy expressed by skaters as they hit the ice is apparent for all to see. Not so obvious from the audience seats are the new friendships forged, the shared laughter behind the curtains, and the positive energy, teamwork, and sense of satisfaction as everything comes together. And sometimes it’s the things that don’t happen on show day that make it all worthwhile for the volunteers; like the young skaters learning new skills and having fun on rehearsal ice, and the anticipation felt in the lead-up to show day as skaters look forward to performing to the delight of friends and family. KWSC is a not-for-profit organization that critically depends on its volunteers. Showcase is but one example of its many achievements that would not be possible without the dedication and efforts of its volunteers. We welcome you to join our volunteer team, meet new friends, help our skaters, and participate in the development of your community. For more information about volunteer opportunities, please visit the volunteer information page on the KWSC website at www.kwsc.org/volunteer.html. Join us, learn new skills, meet new friends, and make a difference. “We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give”. --Winston Churchill

Paige Nobbs & Andrew McDonald Paige and Andrew placed 1st at WOS sectionals in PreJuvenile dance and 1st at the WOS STARskate Championship. “We like Ice Dancing because we get to meet lots of new friends and we love the sense of being free on the ice. So, I guess we can just say, Ice Dancing is awesome!” ~ Paige Nobbs (Age 11) & Andrew McDonald (Age 14)
V ictoria Stephen Victoria Stephen placed 2nd at the Western Ontario Sectional Championships in Pre-Juvenile. “I have been skating since I was 4 years old and ever since then my love for skating has continued to grow stronger. My favourite part about skating is meeting new friends such as Kara and Natasha, and many others, and to be able to have the experience to step on the ice with all of our other brilliant skaters. The other reason why skating is the best thing that ever happened to me is because I have an amazing coach, Dianne Rouleau, who dedicates everything she can to me, and who, most of all, believes in me.” ~ Victoria Stephen (Age 11)

KATIE BOB AK & IA N BEHARRY By: Danielle Earl
When they first teamed up in February of 2011, Katie Bobak and Ian Beharry had no idea what would come out of their partnership. It was soon apparent that the small, blonde 17 year old, and the tall dark 20 year old were meant to be together. From the beginning, they have impressed the pants off of almost everyone who has seen them skate. In fact, at their first tryout they were landing impressive triple throws – jumps that, with her previous partner, Katie had never been consistent with. To put it in a sentence: they were a match made by the skating Gods. Katie started skating when she was three, following her sister into the sport because she was so hyper. “I have a tendency to be a perfectionist,” she says “and so here I am today, still finding things I want to improve and change and develop as a skater.” Ian started competing at Sectionals when he was 9 at the Juvenile level and, at 10, won Sectionals. “I was supposed to go Nationals but then right before that, I broke my leg,” Ian says about this. He started skating pairs when he was 13 and won Pre-Novice Nationals when he was 14 and Novice Nationals when he was 15.
We asked the pair when they realized skating was going to be their path in life. “I knew it would be my path when I first started pairs because it felt right and found I could pick up on it more easily than singles,” Ian says. Katie took a different approach, saying, “skating is a huge part of my life, but I wouldn’t say it’s my “path” in life. It’s just something that’s always there for you, through good times and bad times, blood, sweat, and tears, when you’re so tired you can barely walk, when you’re ecstatic, or just barely held together with tape and glue. It’s your best friend, and you’re favourite way to express yourself. It keeps you busy and out of trouble, it helps you grow up and find yourself as a person. Not a day goes by where you don’t think about it, it can drive you crazy, and make all you’re biggest dreams come true...sometimes in the same day! I’m not really sure you can pinpoint a specific moment when this happens; it just sort of does.” The pair, together for only 13 months, already has an impressive track record. They won their first competition together last July in Indianapolis and things only improved from there as their season progressed. They were awarded a Junior Grand Prix event in Gdansk, Poland, where they placed an impressive second place overall after an uncharacteristically sub-par short program. They then travelled to Talinn, Estonia for their second Junior Grand Prix event, where they placed first, thereby qualifying them for the Junior Grand Prix Final in Quebec City in December. Not only were they the only Junior Canadian skaters at the Junior Grand Prix Final, they earned the silver medal at the JGPF, an impressive feat. They then moved on to the Canadian National Championships, where they won the gold and broke the Canadian record, which was previously held by Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison. To round off an impressive competition season, the pair travelled to Minsk, Belarus last month for the Junior Worlds competition and placed an impressive 7th place. It is clear that something in this team is working really well. When asked about it Katie attributes it to the fact that Ian’s personality is so calm. “I’m really high maintenance and Ian’s really calm,” she says, “he calms me down when I get hyper.” When asked what advice they would give to young skaters, Katie says, “I would tell younger skaters something I tell myself every day; “I uspejú. Nikdy zlyhanie. Vždy lekciu.” It’s a Slovakian phrase, loosely translated to mean: “I will succeed. Never a failure. Always a lesson.” That’s something really important to remember in skating, you can’t have a good day everyday, but pushing through the bad days makes you a stronger skater, and a stronger person. Hard work and determination always pays off in the end,” while Ian adds, “Believe and follow your dreams,” as something for young skaters to remember.

Kirsten Mo ore-Towers & Dylan Moscovitch By: Cindy Watkin
Who inspires Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch? As 2011 Sr. National Pairs Champions with a passion to be on the Olympic podium since they were five years old and leaders to skaters in the KWSC, I was curious to hear their answers. Kirsten’s reply was, “Anyone who has overcome challenges and fears to accomplish their goals inspires me.” Dylan answered, “Rocky Balboa. He was the underdog. He was a true champion who fought with determination and heart.” Kirsten’s hero is her Grandpa, Michael Tapp. “For everything he’s been through in his life, and for all he’s gotten accomplished with so much tragedy, is truly something to be recognized.” Dylan’s reply was a little broader; “I don’t necessarily have one hero. I admire great qualities in many different people.” photo by hilary camilleri What these two don’t realize, is that their commitment and dedication to each other, the pairs’ teams, KWSC, and the sport itself is very motivational to all who know them. When asked about being unique as a team, Kirsten replied “We are known to have fun on the ice and have been called the ‘cheerleaders of figure skating’ or ‘kids in a candy store’; we both truly love skating and although it is our job, we take great joy in doing it.” Both began skating in lessons at a young age and skated singles before making the shift into Pairs skating, “There’s something to be said for the enormous amount of respect, trust and friendship in a good Pair relationship. I was lucky enough to find that in mine.” Kirsten says of her pairing with Dylan. He feels that “We respect each other as people and partners. We like each other.” Coaches Kristy Sargeant-Wirtz and Kris Wirtz - former Olympians themselves - certainly believe in what Kirsten and Dylan do. They feel, Kirsten and Dylan have what it takes to make their Olympic dreams come true. “With hard work, determination and practice, practice, practice they can succeed.” Kris said. Kirsten feels the best advice shes received over the years was from Kris; “It’s only figure skating - we all have more shots at glory.” Indeed each of us may have more than one opportunity to shine. Kirsten and Dylan are shining now and will continue to do so as they train and grow as a team.

Evenings with Mr.D
Taylor Steele & rob Schultz By: Danielle Earl
Together for four years, Taylor Steele and Rob Schultz have had an exceptional year as a team. An outgoing, blonde nineteen year old, paired with a redheaded, seemingly shy twenty-one year old may not seem like the perfect match, but when they come together on the ice, their personalities just click. Taylor lives in Waterloo, Ontario. She began pairs skating when she was six years old and won National bronze medals in both Novice and Pre-Novice pairs with her first partner. She teamed up with Rob in 2008 and hasn’t looked back since. When she is not skating, Taylor enjoys shopping, reading and running, as well as travelling. Rob has been skating pairs since he was twelve years old. He lives in Aberfoyle, Ontario and travels to K-W every day to train. This year he and Taylor travelled to Shanghai, China, where they competed in the Grand Prix Cup of China competition and placed 7th. When he is not skating, Rob enjoys golfing and water sports. This year has been a year of new beginnings and firsts for this young team. After a disappointing fourth place finish at Junior Nationals last year the team came to train at KWSC under the direction of Kris and Kristy Wirtz. This year marked the first time the two were required to skate Senior. To top off this year of firsts, Taylor and Rob made it to the National Team with a fifth place finish. This is very impressive for a new Senior team! “They have a bright future and they have found their path,” said their coach, Kris Wirtz. Taylor and Rob continue to progress and hope to move up the Senior ranks next year, as well as continue to improve upon their personal best scores. We wish them all the luck at future competitions. You make KWSC proud!

FreeSkate Festival 2011
The final weekend before Christmas, Carolyn Fedy Skating Centre was filled with Christmas spirit as our audience members waited in anticipation to see our great young skaters in our annual FreeSkate Festival. This was a fantastic event enabling our Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club members to demonstrate their skating abilities for family and friends. It was a fun day, providing many skaters their first exposure to skating in front of an audience and experience being judged in a friendly competition. 126 skaters participated in the 21 events which included the Interpretive and “Old-fashioned-definitionof-Interpretive” event with (of course) a Christmas theme. Everyone that participated in the FreeSkate Festival earned a medal and received a skate towel to show our appreciation. The ever popular “Team” event had six teams, with each team representing a favorite Christmas carol. A special thanks to our team captains Lana Splettstoesser, Alida Morrison, Aiden Boileau, Emily Wright, Chloe Gaskell, and Kara Hogg for organizing their teams, and to Paul MacIntosh for keeping the event flowing. The judges were showered with gifts and hugs of bribery from the team members, with the hope their team would eventually be picked as the winner. The event was fun, with a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus delivering candy canes to all the kids – thanks Ben and Olga. We also had fantastic exhibitions which included our young dance teams and Synchro skaters demonstrating their skills. Everything ran very smoothly and on schedule :). A big thank you to everyone involved. Volunteers are an essential part of any event and much of the success of this event can be attributed to the many volunteers who donated their valuable time during this hectic time of year. The much appreciated support from the KWSC office staff, Board of Directors, and coaches encouragement for their young skaters to participate, made this event possible. You all made the 2011 FreeSkate Festival a success! Your Co - Chairs, Lori Stephen and Peter Joza

Sarah volunteered her time and creative expertise for the last three months to design the logo, posters and program for IceList. She took on the role without any initial connection within the club - an example of a true volunteer. Sarah owns her own business, The Design Truth, providing both corporate and small businesses with full graphic and web design solutions. Her professionalism, creativity and enthusiasm was incredible! She was a vital member of our crew. Thank you Sarah! ~ 2012 Showcase Committee
