6 Unexpected Energy (and Money) Savers Published: December 13, 2010 (houselogic.com) Here are a few surprising and simple ways to cut your energy bill this season. Give your pocketbook and Mother Nature a gift this season by taking advantage of these simple, surprising ways to save energy and money. 1. Put lamps in the corners: It’s all about placement. :KHQ D ODPS LV SODFHG LQ D FRUQHU WKH OLJKW UHà HFWV RII WKH adjoining walls, which makes the room lighter and brighter. 2. Switch to a laptop: If you’re reading this article on a laptop, you’re using 1/3 less energy than if you’re reading this on a desktop. 3. Choose an LCD TV: If you’re among those considerLQJ D à DW VFUHHQ XSJUDGH IURP \RXU FRQYHQWLRQDO &57 79 choose an LCD screen for the biggest energy save. 4. Give your water heater a blanket: Just like you pile on extra layers in the winter, your hot water heater can use VRPH H[WUD LQVXODWLRQ WRR $ ÀEHUJODVV LQVXODWLRQ EODQNHW LV D simple addition that can cut heat loss and save 4% to 9% on the average water-heating bill. 5. Spin laundry faster: The faster your washing machine can spin excess water out of your laundry, the less you’ll need to use your dryer. Many newer washers spin clothes so effectively, they cut drying time and energy consumption in half—which results in an equal drop in your dryer’s energy bill. 6. Use the dishwasher: If you think doing your dishes by hand is greener than powering up the dishwasher, you’re wrong. Dishwashers use about 1/3 as much hot water and relieve that much strain from your energy-taxing water heater. Added bonus: you don’t have to wash any dishes.

It’s spring cleaning time again‌ or at least time to start thinking about a spring cleaning checklist. The days are getting longer, the weather is starting to warm up a bit and there’s no better time to start organizing yourself to tackle the dust bunnies, wipe down your dirty walls and organize the closet. It’s time to let the light in, reduce the clutter and get control of your house again. The key to a good spring cleaning is to not overwhelm yourself so much that you put the entire cleaning project off for another day. Instead, try to organize the cleaning so that you tackle different sections of the house at once or different types of cleaning at the same time. When you have the duster out to clean the ceiling fans and knick-knacks it’s a good time to hit the plants and bookshelves. +HUH¡V D OLVW RI MXVW D IHZ RI WKH EDVLF WDVNV WR JHW \RX VWDUWHG <RX FDQ Ă€QG some printable checklists below.
