QUESTION: Is your current advertising doing a good enough job? Sit down, turn your mobile to silent and grab a cuppa for a moment. Ask yourself that question and try to focus on what you currently do, how much you spend and whether you can actually quantify the value of your current marketing exposure. Does it bring the punters in through your door? Yes? or ...maybe not as much as before? That has to be the hardest thing - getting new people into your business. Q: How do we do that? A: Marketing and clever advertising - but not just clever and lovely costly looking ads everywhere, but cleverly placed and considered planning along with smart budgeting and measured responses. Marketing and selling is all about relationships, if you get on well you are more likely to stick with that arrangement. But with the current financial climates proving ever more testing, perhaps we all need to rethink? 1. List out all your advertising and how much each costs you per month and then also per year. 2. Who are you trying to target and are you reaching those people? 3. Have your customers/marketplace/product changed over the years & should you now target more or different groups? 4. Have your chosen publications changed over the years or become stale? Are they still able to give you what you need? 5. Are you up to speed with the current social networks and do you use these to their maximum offering? So, your focus should be on getting as many of these desired things possible for the least amount of money. But it isn't all about going for the cheapest ads- it is about getting the highest business return on your advertising investment. A few changes, a slight rethink and a refresh is sometimes all you need.

HERB OFYear THE MONTH Start The New Loving Yourself!! Some of you may have read Louise Hay's book 'You Can Heal Your life' so here's a few simple guidelines to follow to start to change your life ! • Stop all criticism - criticism doesn't change a thing and attracts negativity. So start with being ok with who you are and choose thoughts that uplift and support you. • Don't scare yourself - we scare ourselves with thoughts thinking the worst possible outcome. If someone doesn't call we feel unloved or someone makes a remark at work and we think we're going to be sacked. Change negative thoughts by thinking of a nice view or situation... it won't happen overnight but keep doing it. • Be patient - our minds are like a garden, we sow seeds, give them water and sunlight then the garden will blossom. Our minds are the same, we plant positive thoughts in our minds, pluck out the negative ones - use good thoughts to create the life you want. • Be kind to your mind - every thought we think and words we use are affirmations so creative positive thoughts and statements for the life you want. Relaxation is essential to allow energy to flow as stress cuts off energy. • Praise yourself - tell yourself how well you're doing instead of focusing on the negatives. Sometimes we don't feel like we're good enough which is a limiting belief that can stem from childhood. • Be loving to your negatives - you created it but you're not stuck with it. Let go of the old pattern and move into a more positive pattern. If you say 'I hate my job' then if you get a new job you will also hate it as that's the message you're putting out to the universe. • Take care of your body - it's the house you live in! Find an exercise you enjoy and watch what you put into your body. We sometimes use food to punish ourselves to cope with problems which then creates guilt. • Mirror work - look into the mirror and say "I love & accept you exactly as you are" It may be hard in the beginning but as you keep doing it your inner energy will start to shift. • Be willing - if you don't know how to do the above points the universe will hear you and you'll get a positive response. Change yourself and your beliefs and positive things will start to happen

WELLBEING Detox, lets clean our body up! Well Christmas is now behind us and a new year begun, what a good time to help our body and organs to have a spring clean after the Christmas excesses a detox may be the perfect way for you. So what is a detox and how does it work? Detox short for detoxification is a systematic approach to assisting our body to remove toxins stored in its tissues. Detox’s can be done over one to several days. I would not suggest any longer unless you are accustomed to detoxing your body. A few days prior to starting a detox reduce your intake of processed foods, alcohol, tea and coffee; introduce plain water, salads and vegetables into your diet. (I realise it may be hard at this time of the year eating cold food, so make warming soups with the vegetables if you prefer).

The one-day mono diet: This is eating either one fruit or one vegetable for one day. For

example if you like pineapple this may be your day’s choice or you could be partial to carrots so they would be your choice. As I say this is one day only!!!! Pick a day that you are not going to be interrupted and will be able to follow the detox easily during the day you may like to try to do some meditation, read or simply sit and enjoy the silence. The following days introduce other foods sparingly maybe one type at a time….

The weekend detox: As with the mono detox start a few days in advance preparing for the

detox and again at the end reintroduce other food types. Usually start the day with a freshly prepared fruit juice hot water and lemon drink, for lunch a light salad with only oil and garlic dressing and another fruit juice. Mid afternoon a vegetable based juice. Evening meal lightly steamed vegetables with fresh herbs. Remember to drink lots and lots of water to flush the toxins out. On day two continue the same as on day one but be aware you may feel a little tired so take time out to relax. Seven day detox: You should only be doing a long term detox when you have a completely empty diary as it will be challenging.

Follow the guidelines for the mono and weekend detox at the start and the end. For the first day follow the guidelines for the mono diet. For day two and three follow the weekend detox guidelines. For the remaining days you should follow the breakfast regime, lunch would be some type of salad with seeds or raw nuts. Evening meal a bit more substantial with maybe brown rice, buckwheat noodles, tufu, or a baked potato. You may well feel tired in the beginning of the detox and maybe have some nasty side effects but by the end of the week you should be feeling on top of the world. Ensure you have some good reading matter, do some yoga, meditation, go for gentle walks, take a sietas, energising or warming bath depending on the time of day. For anyone on medication, or in poor health it would be best to consult with your practitioner to ensure that a detox is right for you!

HERB OF THE MONTH After many festive meals with drinks, it is warmly recomended to detox our body. Lot’s of water, vegetables and fruits and no fried foods, our bodies would appreciate this for a few weeks!! We can help with herbal remedies to make this depuration more effiecient. For the kidneys (filter of protein digestion) we could use Horse’s Tail, Birch and Stinging Nettle. For the liver and gall bladder (fat digestion) we recommend the herbs artichoke, milk thistle, boldo and desmodium. Desmodium adscendens is another wonderous herb which has been traditionally used by native people for a wide variety of conditions including: hepatitis, protection of liver from cirrhosis, muscle, tendon and spinal pain, rheumatism, asthma (has bronchialdilating qualities), allergic symptoms and eczema. In different studies has been proven its ability to help normalize elevated liver enzyme (transaminase) levels. As all of the liver friendly herbs can taste rather bitter, it is recommended to add either peppermint/spearmint, licorice (not in case of high blood pressure) or stevia to the infusion to achieve a nicer, drinkable flavour! Wishing you a very healthy and happy New Year 2014!! The DIRECTORY In print, online, social media and on the move ... we´ve got it covered!

BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY

MAKING THE MOST OF GOOGLE Although it’s been a long time since I have worked on the “nitty gitty” of SEO and search marketing, I often get asked about it. The current tools available and up-todate methods differ a fair bit from my time in this area, but the core hasn’t changed that much and its worth considering your strategy and the business approach before investing time or money into this area. Make sure you understand the foundations of a good SEO campaign and read up a bit before approaching an ‘expert’. Here is how I think about what underlies the search engine process and how I think companies should start their strategic discussions on the topic.

GOOGLE’S MOTIVATION For any search engine to be successful, the user must get shown the most suitable websites that match their search terms otherwise the user is frustrated and disappointed that their question has not been answered. Google have become the most successful search engine because they are the best at providing the most relevant links in answer to the user’s query. People love to use Google because ‘Google always knows the answer’. To keep pleasing its users is therefore a major motivation for them. They will do all they can to ensure that the most relevant, reliable and useful websites appear at the top of a search result. This is why they are regularly changing their algorithms to prevent spammers from being listed and preventing ‘tricks’ from working.

YOUR MOTIVATION

KEYWORDS FOR SUCCESS

Getting onto the first search page of Google for your chosen keywords can bring a huge amount of traffic to your website. If your website is written well then this traffic can amount to a large number of conversions. This can be big money, which is why there is a whole industry out there dedicated to helping companies get there. Some are more ethical than others. When evaluating the methods used or information you get from anyone, always remember what drives Google. If your motivation ‘to be the best source providing help and information to a searcher’ matches Google’s goal then you will eventually, with the right guidance get there. Be honest with yourself though - does your site or company meet all the criteria?

The key to success is to identify the right keywords (what’s your niche?) and optimise for these. The last thing you will want is to get a large amount of traffic for something you don’t specialise in because enquires from this will waste your time.

LA FIESTA DE LOS REYES

La Fiesta de los Reyes

Known in the English speaking parts of the world as the Epiphany, it is the arrival of the Three Wise Kings. The Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings’ Parade) takes place throughout Spain on the evening before Epiphany which is the night of January 5th. Celebrations are in every town and city, with masses of people gathering on the main roads and plazas in order to get a sighting of the arrival of the Three Kings into town. As the parades pass you will be showered with sweets which people scramble to collect - some take carrier bags, large hats and even umbrellas to catch them in! During the celebrations, on January 5th the Three Kings will go up on the stage and children have to queue for ages to get up there and see one of them - they will be asked how good they have been, and if they will continue to behave for the next year, then they will be given more sweets or toys. In Spain, it is not the Baby Jesus or Santa Claus who delivers the presents on Christmas Day, but Los Tres Reyes, The children of Spain receive gifts on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany. Children will leave their shoes on the windowsills and fill them with straw, carrots, and barley and leave water for the camels of the Wise Men. ... (A bit like leaving the mince pie and carrot for Santa and Rudolph). The favourite Reye is Balthazar who rides a donkey and is the one believed to leave the gifts. On the morning of the January 6th, presents will be left on the windowsills or balconies. Feliz Los Tres Reyes!!!

BEAUTY

CONCERNED WITH CHANGING SKIN IN THE COLD WINTER WEATHER? Why can skin become dry and itchy during the winter months? Dehydration and dryness are very common skin concerns during the winter months: these conditions reflect a loss of barrier lipids that help keep the skin hydrated, resulting in flakiness and often itchiness. Overly dry skin cannot protect nerve endings in the skin, leading to skin responses. Dehydrated skin means there is a disruption of the barrier integrity, which may also result in ingredients and microorganisms penetrating the skin, causing adverse effects such as stinging or itching. Exposure to skin-damaging factors such as sun, cold winds, air conditioning, central heating and low temperatures can dry out skin and excessive heat or cold are common triggers of sensitised skin. Low humidity is also a trigger of sensitivity. Our microclimate is just as important – what we expose our skin to in our home, cars, offices and airplanes changes daily, resulting in varying levels of sensitivity. For instance, we may be inadvertently sensitising our skin on a typical winter day, when we move from cold, dry winds outside to dry forced air heating inside. Both dry and dehydrated skin can experience:• Irritation, inflammation, itchiness and sensitivity • Slight to severe flaking and scaling • A feeling of tightness or tautness Here are our tips to help avoid and control sensitive skin: 1. Lifestyle choices will influence and inadvertently sensitise our skin. Avoid long periods of time outdoors and exposure to potential UV damage. 2. Cut down alcohol and smoking and avoid completely if possible: alcohol dilates blood vessels, increasing flushing, while smoking contributes to skin dehydration and exposes skin to polluting chemicals. 3. Avoid triggers – harsh cleansing, over exfoliation and skin care products with SD alcohol, artificial colour and fragrance, Formaldehyde, Lanolin. 4. Moisturise and help to repair the skin’s barrier function. To prevent entry of potential allergens through the micro cracks in the upper layers of the epidermis we need to replace the natural lipids and encourage the skin to replace its own lost barrier. 5. Opt for fragrance-free moisturisers rich in silicones, essential fatty acids, lipids and ceramides work well in this case. Protection from the sun is important and daily use of a fragrance free physical sunscreen of at least SPF20 is recommended. Try a formulation with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide in preference to chemical formulas that increase heat in the skin.

Use a cosmeceuticals skin system which uses the latest and most advanced forms of ingredient technology.

GIG GUIDE & MUSIC

MUSIC SCENE LEE TOWNSEND Lee is a guitar/vocalist from North West England who plays regularly in and around Nerja. He has been playing in bands and solo for the last 15 years and has built up a fair following in the local area since relocating to Spain in 2006. From 2008, Lee has performed at many of the expatriate weddings which happen in the summer season along with weekly performances at local venues. The bands Lee has played with include local power trio “Not To Fall”, with who he gained quite a strong following and much of his reputation with many of the wedding planners in the area. Since Lee’s brother and drummer of the band returned to England, he has been performing with “Midnight Mechanics” and “HdM”. More recently, Lee’s solo acoustic shows in which he covers artists such as Ed Sheeran, Jason Mraz, Oasis, Damien Rice etc, have been the subject of many conversations locally, especially after his performance as support act for The Bootleg Beatles, who played in Frigiliana in August last year.
