A- Z of Businesses Places to Eat and Drink Real Estate Guide Advertisers Offers Inside Music Scene with Chicago Jim Nerja Residents Day Kids Zone Sports News

Dear Readers and Supporters, As we moving into the start of the season now, we look forward to Semana Santa and all the celebrations around that. We are hoping that this year will continue to pick up on visitors and spending, and signs show from local Estate Agents that holiday bookings are already up from the this time last year - with the weather being so bad across many parts of Europe and the strong currency exchange rate - it looks like it is going to be good for all of us. We welcome again new advertisers and supporters, and say a big thank you to the loyal ones who are still with us. To monitor how well The Directory is going we are planning some online surveys this is to gage how well we deliver our promises and to see what our readers and supporters want - so watch this space! A big event that many of you will know about is the Nerja Residents Day held on Sunday April 27th 2014, or in case of bad weather, it will be on the following Sunday, May 4th. It takes place at the Plaza Espana which is above the Balcon parking and near to the Nerja Town Hall. The Directory will also be there! So come and say hi and enjoy the music, food and drinks and the entertainment on the main stage. The fun starts at 12 noon. Enjoy the features and articles this month, and remember it is so easy to have just a small ad in The Directory, to feature your phone number so people can easily find you!

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION PATIOS: The outdoor patio of your home provides comfort and extends the floor space of all gardens. Whilst adding to the aesthetics of your garden, patios also create ambience and add value to any property. There are many aspects to patio design and one should carefully decide in advance how to arrange the patio and its additional features. Consideration should be given to the positioning of elements such as the barbeque, lighting, seating and dining areas, the pergola and raised or sunken flowerbeds, for example. The materials used in the patio should mirror or compliment the materials used in the home. Continuity from interior to exterior spaces can be achieved with material links such as: bricks; pavers; concrete; stone, etc. At LT Construction, we encourage you to view the patio as an adjustable element of your garden that demands a creative approach. We can help you design a patio space that is divided up intelligently - using various elements such as raised beds, sunken beds and planting, etc - so that you can escape the traditional blandness of the flat and generic patio that is commonly built. If you are looking for a fresh approach and feel that your old patio requires a little inspiration, we are the people to help. Visit our website at www.ltconstruction.es to see examples of patio design or contact Lee Talbot on 695324586 for your free consultation.

REAL ESTATE GUIDE

REAL ESTATE GUIDE

Step by step guide for buying a property in Spain

Choose the right area: Pinpoint the area that is right for you. Do lots of research - consider climate, proximity to an airport, distance from the nearest beach, local amenities, what’s important to you.

Choose between coast, village and countryside: Coastal properties are generally more expensive than those inland. In a town/village, you can take part in village life and be close to local amenities. In the countryside you can enjoy the peace, tranquillity, scenery and views. Choose the right kind of property: Modern villa, older style country house, townhouse or apartment. Consider your priorities – outside space, views, swimming pool, walking distance from amenities. Requirements for buying a property in Spain: You must have an NIE number (foreigner’s identification number) and a Spanish bank account. NIE numbers are obtained from the local police station (Comisaría de Policia). Starting the buying process: Before you sign anything or pay any money you must take advice from a legal adviser - either a lawyer or an asesoria/gestor (conveyancer). Purchase contract: The purchase contract will usually be prepared by your legal adviser. Before signing, be certain you have chosen the right property - the contract is binding with penalty clauses if either party rescinds the contract. Holding deposit: The buyer pays a holding deposit to remove the property from the market so their legal adviser can ensure that the documentation for the property is correct. 10% deposit: When both parties have agreed the purchase contract, a deposit of 10% of the purchase price (less the holding deposit) is paid by the buyer. This is a non-refundable payment and only reimbursed if a specific clause in the contract is not fulfilled. Searches: Your legal adviser will carry out searches and obtain a Nota Simple - a document confirming that the seller is the registered owner of the property and that all taxes have been paid. If there are any outstanding issues, an amount of money will be retained from the seller to cover any unpaid expenses. Completion: The completion date is agreed between the buyer and the seller and takes place at the office of the Notary. Once the title deed has been signed by both parties, you will be handed the keys to your new home and a copy of the title deed (escritura). Expenses: You need to budget for between 10% and 11% of the purchase price of the property to cover taxes and expenses. WELLBEING continued ... BOWEN TESTIMONIAL: For almost a year I had experienced numbness, pins and needles in my hand and fingers, and extreme pain in my upper forearm on the left hand side of my body. As well as having had a long term problem with a lower back vertebrae which appeared to be causing left hip and leg pain. Prior to having Bowen technique with Sylvia I had consulted an osteopath and although delivered in a professional manner I found the experience invasive and painful. Sylvia at our first meeting explained the Bowen method and her enthusiasm and commitment gave me confidence and a feeling of being included in structuring the programme for my treatment. After 10 sessions the problem with my left arm had been brought under control to a point where I experienced only 5% of my original symptoms. The relief was incredible. From my experience the ability to relax increases the benefit of the Bowen method treatment and in addition to addressing particular problems; sessions have always resulted in a general feeling of well-being. Sylvia has excellent communication skills and discreet and professional attitude. Kathleen in Competa Since qualifying as a full member of the Bowen Academy and as a full member of the British Association in 2001 I have given more than 6,000 sessions of this incredible technique. I have received many testimonials and recommendations and have extensive experience with many incredible results.

Supergrains what are they? Supergrains have a very high nutrient content so incorporating them as part of your weekly diet will give your immune system a good boost to help ward off illnesses. So go on and try them, Enjoy!

Bulgur wheat- is simple wheat in its whole form.

This makes bulgur extremely beneficial to the digestive system and can help avoid constipation, diverticular disease, heart disease, and cancer. It is a natural whole grain food in that no chemicals or additives are used in processing the product. Many of the wheat’s naturally occurring vitamins and minerals permeate the kernel during cooking thus maintaining more nutritive content than other forms of processed wheat products. It is high in fiber and carbohydrate and low in fat is rich in vitamin B vitamins, iron, phosphorus and manganese. It goes well with foliate producing vegetables such as spinach, asparagus, broccoli and Brussels’ sprouts. It is also listed as a suggested daily food item on the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid

Quinoa - the protein in quinoa is considered a complete protein due to the presence of all eight essential amino acids, richer in protein than other major cereals and grains. It has high-fibre content and, being gluten-free, can be enjoyed by celiac’s. It is low in fat and when compared to rice or wheat, is higher in calcium, phosphorous, iron and B-vitamins. Before cooking, the seeds must be rinsed to remove their bitter resin-like coating, which is called saponin. In South America the saponin which is removed from the quinoa is used as detergent for washing clothes and as an antiseptic to promote healing of skin injuries. 30

Millet - is a grain that is often associated as only bird food, however it is very suitable

for human consumption. It has a whole host of nutritional benefits. Eating millet can help if you suffer from asthma, migraines or thyroid problems. Millet is small, round in shape, and can be white, grey, yellow, or red, it has a mildly sweet, nut-like flavour. It is nearly 15 percent protein, and is rich in fiber, B-complex vitamins such as niacin, thiamine, and riboflavin, the essential amino acid methionine, lecithin, and contains some vitamin E. It is also high in minerals such as iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. It is also rich in phytochemicals, including phytic acid which lowers cholesterol and phytate which is associated with a lower risk of cancer. I recently made millet seed cakes as part of my tapas lunch. Within minutes of putting them on the table they were all gone, yes they were eaten! And nobody started trilling like a budgie! HERB OF THE MONTH MACA – LEPIDIUM MEYENII: Normally we talk about a herb; this month I have chosen a medical plant which is actually a tuber, a root.

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a South American root plant consumed as a food and is for medicinal purposes. Maca is also known as “Peruvian ginseng” (despite the fact that it is not a member of the ginseng family), because it is used as a folk remedy to increase stamina, energy and sexual function. Maca is a great tonic against fatigue for either women or men, without making nervous (like sometimes guarana or ginseng do), at any age. Maca is an adaptogen, which means that it raises the body’s response to defend itself against disease both physically and emotionally. For women is Maca a great support in times of PMS and also menopause symptoms like hot flushes, balancing hormone levels and increasing energy. Studies showed that Maca helps reduce anxiety and depression, as well as improves sexual function. Maca has a positive effect on sexual dysfunction or sexual desire in healthy women and men. Studies showed that treatments with maca helped to increase semen volume, sperm count and mobility. Maca is available in form of root powder; you can mix into juices, (vegetal) milk or water. And also in capsules, either powder or in more concentrated form as an extract. Certainly a very convenient form to intake a higher dose easily. MIND, BODY & SOUL This month I’m going to look at relationships and how we can deal with them, whether it is a boss, co-worker, an employee, friend, lover spouse or a child. Relationships are mirrors of ourselves. What we attract always mirrors either qualities we have or beliefs we have about relationships. The things you don’t like about these people are either what you yourself do or would not do, or what you believe. Take time to reflect on your primary relationships or a relationship you most want to heal. Often we treat those we love most, the worst. They don’t deserve that from you and you don’t deserve that from them. Consider learning the skills to talk about those things that make your relationship less than what it could be. What’s it worth to you to have truly loving relationships in your life? How would life be different if you felt loving and loved, and truly appreciate others and are appreciated by them? Look for a moment at someone in your life who bothers you. Describe three things about this person that you don’t like, things that you want him or her to change. Now, look deeply inside of you and ask yourself ‘where am I like that, and when do I do the same things? Close your eyes and give yourself the time to do this, then ask yourself if you ARE WILLING TO CHANGE? When you remove these patterns, habits, and beliefs from your thinking and behavior, either the other person will change or he or she will leave your life. The only way to change others is to change yourself. Change your patterns, and you will find that “they” are different too. Blame is useless and gives away your power and without power, we cannot make changes. If we want to attract love it comes when we least expect it. Hunting for love never brings the right partner, it only creates longing and unhappiness. Don’t rush to find love and it will happen when you feel ready. Don’t just settle just to have someone…make a list of qualities you would like. It’s important to love & accept yourself before you are ready for love. What might be keeping love away? Could it be criticism? Feelings of unworthiness or a belief that you are unlovable. Start by loving and accepting yourself and be ready for love when it arrives!! “All my relationships are harmonious” You can find more information on my website www.meiglynn.wordpress.com or me on Facebook www.facebook.com/MeiFlynn . area and more! 32follow an easyon to use, easy to find A-Z of businesses in your The DIRECTORY

Why Nerja?

Nerja is a town which has much to offer its residents and visitors. Superbly located by the sea with gorgeous beaches, surrounded by white washed pueblos and only a one hour drive from Granada for skiing at the Sierra Nevada region. The climate is good all year round, protected by Sierra de Almijara Mountains behind and its beaches nestled within coves. Nerja offers an excellent choice of accommodation from hotels, apartments, private villas, townhouses, hostels and even camping - so from the family beach holiday to nightlife at Plaza Tutti Frutti. Sports include diving, abseiling, windsurfing, snorkelling and other outdoor activities such as tennis, horse riding walking, mountain climbing, bike riding due to the many surrounding natural parks and wildlife. Top tourist spots include the town itself with the Balcon de Europa, plenty of varied shopping through countless cobbled lanes, lots of entertainment from flamenco and modern live music and good restaurants to dine in town and fresh fish barbequed on the beaches. Nearly every month of the year you will find a fiesta - full of culture, music and life which you just have to join in - all of which of course are free. Nerja boasts many fiestas but some of the ‘big’ ones are the Carnival (February) Semana Santa (Easter - week long celebrations), San Isidro (May), San Juan (June), ‘Festival of Music and Dance’ (June), Feria (October) and finally New Years Eve. But there is rarely a month goes by without at least one fiesta in the town or nearby area.

The Nerja museum (Museo de Nerja) is in the heart of the town near to the Balcon at Plaza Espana above the main underground parking. The museum was opened quite recently in December 2011. The museum traces the history of Nerja from the cave dwellers of Palaeolithic times to the tourist boom years of the 1960´s. It is an initiative developed and managed by the Nerja Caves Foundation. The Nerja Caves: Apart from visiting this spectacular place for the sheer beauty of the caves themselves, there are also many events held here. La Cueva de Nerja, are located just outside Nerja near to Maro and is one of the largest caves of Andalusia. On June 12th, 1960 they opened with the first public ‘Festival of Music and Dance’, where the Ballet “Le tour de Paris” accompanied by the Málaga Symphony Orchestra. Since that time, the cave room where this show first took place is known as Sala del Ballet (Ballet Room). This room is where they still hold yearly musical spectaculars and it has fantastic acoustics which have to be experienced. In the middle of May the San Isidro fiesta parades from Nerja and ends at the caves with a huge party. Expect music, traditional flamenco costumes, horses, floats and a lot of people! See www.cuevadenerja.es for full details of guided tours and prices for combined museum and cave entry tickets. You could spend your two week’s holiday lying on a beach, or by a pool or exploring the town and nearby areas and still find you needed more time.
