The warmer weather is just around the corner, so if you are looking to get a new air conditioning / heating system installed, Cooltec Services can offer all major brands, and talk you through the choices and latest energy saving options to see which one suits your home and budget best. If you would like to further save energy and money off your bills you can install The ‘Attendant Control’ solution which offers the ultimate in cost effective air-conditioning management on a room occupancy basis. In brief, wall mounted air-conditioners are controlled with infra-red signals that replicate the signals of the hand held remote control. The sophisticated software offers ultimate flexibility in providing energy savings, carbon reduction and flexibility of room climate control. For the hospitality industry, consideration has been given to room occupancy and the software recognises where the occupant’s are within the room and only switches off the airconditioning once they have exited, thus ensuring the comfort of the guest. Window and doors can also be monitored with the Attendant’s wireless sensors which switch off the air-conditioning if windows or doors are left open. • Compatible with all major wall mounted air-conditioning systems • Easily expandable with additional sensors • Optional temperature setting for on/off control in heating, cooling and standby applications Other benefits can include • Reduction in energy bills and carbon emissions • Controls individual air-conditioning units • Allows close individual room climate control for maximum efficiency and comfort • Low cost giving rapid return on investment • Low maintenance See advert below for contact details:

LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD THE TANMIRT EXPEDITION 2018
We sit around a fire under a star lit sky in Sahara, Morocco. Our tagine cooking on a bed of charcoal right next to the sparkling fire. We are far out, 100 km from Tagounite, at the foot of a mountain at our friend Aicha´s Nomad settlement. She is around 20 years and lives out here with her mother and father, both getting older and wiser. We share jokes and stories connected to her everyday life tending the goats and the camels. One camel mother sadly had died earlier in the day and the week old baby camel will now have to be fed by bottle. In mid story she turns to me and says: “Why are your children not in school?” “They are in the best school I could think of right now in the Sahara. Their headmaster in Frigiliana also wished them good luck and happy trails being here. What you (Nomads) know, the world forgot. The world forgot how to make a fire, collect water by the well. And I really want my children to know
how to make tea and welcome people like the Nomads”, I reply to her. “That is good to know it all, your world and mine”, she nods with a secretive smile. “Make work your imagination”, our partner and Amazigh/Berber expert Brahim Elaabdouli told my children Lucas, 13, and Maj, 9, at the start of the Tanmirt Expedition on January 15. Together, we now sum up two months of adventures, stories, lessons and fruit our mutual labour in a book we call “Ki Krak: To Give, to Receive” planned to be published in December 2018. If you want to join our global team and the Tanmirt Expedition and learn more about Lucas’ and Maj’s journey in search for Nomad wisdom, read more below: Victoria Ahlén, digital educator and founder of the Vilostrada Foundation http://www.facebook.com/vilostradafoundation http://www.vilostradafoundation.org

Currency News
Brexit, monetary policy, and trade wars forecast to keep GBP/EUR exchange rate volatile March was a tough month for the pound Sterling to euro exchange rate. The pairing tumbled towards the end of February, hitting its lowest levels in three months, but the last few weeks saw Sterling slowly recovering its losses. Things really picked up at the end of March, when the UK and EU surprised markets by publishing a joint draft Brexit agreement, and UK wage growth and employment data beat forecasts, improving the outlook for the UK’s consumer-driven economy. But what does the future hold for GBP/EUR? April starts with the next round of UK Markit PMIs, which measure activity in the manufacturing, construction and services sectors. The latter is the most important, as it accounts for over 75% of the UK’s total economic output each year. Weakness in the services PMI would undermine the GBP/EUR exchange rate, while strength here would help to alleviate fears that the UK economy is slowing. The month closes with the first official estimate of growth during the first quarter of 2018, which could have a significant impact upon the pound, as the economy has been trudging along since Brexit, walking a fine line between recovery and weakness. Of course, no forecast for the pound would be complete without a mention of Brexit. Negotiations regarding trade could begin in April, and this could bring a whole host of new issues regarding the kind of relationship the UK has with the EU once Brexit is completed. As well as all the usual monthly data set for release from the Eurozone during April, politics could play a large part in deciding EUR movement over the coming weeks. The evolving trade dispute between the US and the European Union is likely to have an impact upon exchange rates, after the former levied tariffs on steel and aluminium imports as part of President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda. If it seems that the EU will be forced to retaliate with tariffs of its own, fears that the world is on the brink of a global trade war will likely weigh on the euro. Rounding off the month will be the European Central Bank (ECB) monetary policy meeting concluding on 26th April. The Eurozone economy continues to send strong signals, but consumer price growth remains firmly below the ECB’s target of just below 2%. The euro is therefore likely to weaken if policymakers conclude that inflation isn’t showing any signs of picking up, while suggestions that further price growth is in the pipeline would boost EUR exchange rates. Barring a fleeting spike higher, the GBP/EUR exchange rate is currently trending around its highest levels since mid-June 2017. Will Brexit positivity and the hopes of monetary tightening in May be enough to push it even higher? Garden and patio flooring: which to cho Looking to lay a new garden surface ready for springtime? If you’re not sure whether yours will be traditional decking, stylish stones, bricks or a luscious lawn, here are a few pros and cons to help you with that allimportant decision.
Natural stone Pros: Stone is so hard-wearing, it lasts a lifetime. And like all good things, it even improves with age. Choose from many options from sandstone
or limestone, to slate, travertine or basalt. Stone slabs come in several different shapes and sizes so you can be adventurous! Cons: It can be expensive to have delivered and because installation is so labour-intensive, your costs could skyrocket. Bear in mind that pale coloured stones get dirty so they need regular scrubbing – perhaps not your favourite pass-time.
Concrete Pros: Concrete is inexpensive, strong, low-maintenance and can be a great long-term solution. Bought in slabs, it’s easy to repair simply by pulling up damaged sections and popping in new slabs. You can get concrete in various colours to imitate bricks, stones or other higher-end materials. Cons: Since it is coloured artificially, concrete paving can fade over time, especially when exposed to the scorching 18
The DIRECTORY April 2018
Mediterranean sunshine. Concrete has a relatively short life-span and erodes over time. Many people add sealant solutions to preserve it but doing so means maintenance.
Porcelain tiles Pros: The Rolls Royce of outdoor flooring, porcelain makes a statement. The tiles are light-weight despite their density and immense durability, and are ideal for contemporary styles. Cons: Being denser and stronger than other materials, porcelain tiles are more difficult to work with, and need experienced flooring professionals to lay them properly. Price might be another concern but the flip side is that they last many more years than other more affordable solutions.
oose?
Wood Pros: Wood is natural and easy on the eye, it smells so good and is softer on the feet than most other surfaces. Decking is simple to lay, greatly reducing its overall cost. Another plus is that it’s pretty nonslip, making it popular for pool-sides. Cons: Wood isn’t as durable as stone or concrete and needs cleaning and sealing every one or two years - if not, it will split, crack and change colour. Be aware too that the top quality hard woods can be quite pricey.
Composite
Terracotta tiles Pros: Terracotta isn’t always recommended outside but if you choose quarry tiles, made from a mix of clays fired at extra-high temperatures, they are weather-proof and anti-slip. For an inexpensive, rustic look, these are perfect for your Mediterranean home.
Pros: Wood alternative or synthetic decking is increasingly popular as a costeffective and environmentally friendly alternative to wood. It’s weather and stain resistant, lightweight, difficult to splinter and low maintenance too. Cons: Watch out for some composites that can look fake. Others can be precariously slippery. Composite doesn’t resist mould so if you have a very shady space you might want to opt for a different material.
Cons: These tiles are by nature rustic so they can sometimes be irregular in shape. Some are poorly fired and porous so you may need to seal them. They aren’t as durable as stone, brick or porcelain so keep enough spares to save colour mismatches in the future. 19
HOME & GARDEN
Brick
Pros: Traditional, classic and elegant, brick is an all-time favourite. You won’t slip on it and it’s low in maintenance and extremely hard-wearing; in fact, brick is an ideal “set and forget” option. Cons: Brick, though not as expensive as stone, is still pricey both in terms of materials and installation. Keep a stash of spares should you need to replace any in the future. Bear in mind that the colour of your spares won’t match those that have been exposed to the elements for years.
Aluminium Pros: Aluminium is weather resistant and doesn’t decay, let alone have termites chomping their way through it. It doesn’t burn, either. What could be more durable? If you are looking for a strikingly industrial, contemporary look, aluminium could be perfect. Cons: It’s a shame that aluminium is so expensive. And, looks-wise, you’ll either love it or hate it.
Artificial grass Pros: If you’re missing the green green grass of home but don’t have the time or desire to keep a natural lawn pristine here in the scorching sunshine, here’s an answer to your woes. No need to mow, water or feed it either! Although good quality artificial grass can be quite expensive, its life expectancy can be upwards of 25 years. Aesthetically, some of the latest versions will fool even the sharpest of eyes – choose from an array of blade lengths, textures and colours - even variegated strands. Cons: Hailed for its watersaving benefits, artificial turf has its own environmental drawbacks. Being a plastic, its manufacture creates pollution and waste, and despite often being made of recycled materials, it isn’t actually biodegradable so when your lawn’s life is finally over, it goes to landfill.

BREXIT – MOVING TO SPAIN NOW: THE POSITIVE APPROACH There have been a lot of harbingers of doom about Brexit and British citizens buying property and moving to Spain. However, on re-reading the Joint Report of the UK Government and the European commission of 8th December 2017 it is clear that for those thinking of buying or renting property and living in Spain before Brexit, some of the most important rights have been secured. “This agreement guarantees that your rights as residents in the EU will be protected in the Withdrawal Agreement, so you can have certainty that you will be able to receive healthcare rights, pension and other benefits provisions as you do today. You can also benefit from existing rules for past and future social security contributions. Furthermore, we have agreed that close family members will be able to join you in the Member State where you live, after the UK has left.” This includes partners, Civil partners, grandparents and others. It may well prove to be a mistake to take the wait-and-see approach if you are considering moving to live permanently in Spain, or indeed to set up a business or become an employee. For the retired, the major concern has been reciprocal rights on healthcare, so again it would be better to make your move prior to the final stages of Brexit. For all the information you need on buying or renting property now, contact us on info@decottalaw.net or call 95 293 1781.

DAMAGE CLAIMS AGAINST A COMMUNITY OF OWNERS? Communities of Owners are civilly liable for damages caused to third parties or even members of their own community. When these damages are derived from the malfunction of community owned items or where there has been negligence in the care of community property. In general, community property could be any of the following; antennas and communication systems, elevators, roof terraces, roofing, heating installations, enclosures of common areas, buildings or urbanizations, foundations, pipes and ducts, corridors, locks, external coverings, structures, (Article.396 CC, lists in particular pillars, beams, slabs, and weight bearing walls). The regulations which govern Communities of Owners can be found in the Horizontal Property Law. Communities of Owners must always maintain the guarantees and ensure that all common constructions and areas are in perfect condition. Article.10 of the Horizontal Property Law (LPH) establishes that the Community of Owners is obliged to carry out the necessary works to sustain the proper maintenance and conservation of the property and its services, so that it meets the necessary structural, habitability, accessibility, safety and security conditions. If damage to a person or to a dwelling occurs as a result of neglect to maintain the common installations, areas, or property in perfect condition, the Community of owners can be held civilly responsible, but the Community President or administrator could also be directly or indirectly responsible. They are required by law to take the appropriate measures to ensure that no harm can occur to a third party by ensuring any urgent repair works, or maintenance is carried out immediately when there is evidence that the lack of maintenance could 24
The DIRECTORY April 2018
cause harm to a third party or dwelling If the Community of Owners does not comply with the obligations established in the Article.10 of the Horizontal Property Law (LPH) and damages do occur, we cite two cases to demonstrate the difference in claims depending on the affected party 1. – If the affected party is an owner in the community and falls due to inadequate maintenance by the Community of Owners i.e. a broken tile or poorly preserved community entrance floor, or if damage is caused to their property due to a leaking community drainpipe, a leak from a community terrace, or a leak from a community façade, they should file a claim for damages against the Community based on Article. 10- LPH. 2. - If the affected party is a third party, i.e. not an owner inside the community, the method of reclamation from the community is governed by different criteria and the period for a claim is limited to ONE YEAR FROM THE DATE OF THE DAMAGE OR INJURY Therefore, if you have problems with a Community of Owners, it is important to have an expert lawyer to advise you and manage your claim, to protect your rights and to be able to obtain full compensation for the damages caused. 7 Tips for Learning How to See What Your Camera Sees Part 3 Here is the Third and final instalment of How to See What Your Camera Sees 6. A Single Moment Being able to choose the moment you open your shutter and make a photograph is another difference between how you see and how your camera sees. Whether you are taking a landscape or photographing a football game or a portrait, the very point in time you press your shutter release is significant in determining how your photograph will look. One precise instance in time, deliberately selected, to capture a unique image. You see with your eyes continuously, not in single instances. Learning to recognize the optimum moments to press your finger down on the button and take a photograph is one of the most important aspects of photography. 7. Tonal Range The tonal range your camera can capture in a single exposure and what’s visible to your eyes are still significantly different. I say “still” because as camera technology develops sensors are able to render a wider tonal range than in the 26
The DIRECTORY April 2018
past and before long they may well be able to render a wider range than we can see. Currently I am unaware of any camera that can record such a wide tonal range, from the brightest to the darkest, as we are able to see with our eyes. If you are outside photographing on a sunny day you will have to set your exposure carefully to capture detail in either the brightest or darkest part of your composition. Your camera is not capable of capturing such a wide range of tones as you can see with your eyes. Learning to see the light and read the tonal range as you are composing your photographs is one of the most essential elements of creative photography. Conclusion Seeing as your camera sees, understanding the differences between your natural human vision and the way your camera works to make photographs, will give you more enjoyment and help you grow as a photographer.

out and about in CANILLAS DE ACEITUNO Even in the pouring rain, Canillas de Aceituno is a trip worth making and owners of electric cars need not worry as it’s one of just two inland towns in the Axarquía to have a charge point for electric vehicles! At around 645 metres above sea level, the village sits prettily in the foothills of La Maroma. It boasts an attractive main square, Plaza de la Constitución (where the electric point can be found), with the town hall, a number of cafés, a pharmacy, internet point with computers and even a small library with a decent selection of foreign-language books. A little further on is the Our Lady of the Rosario and Saint Leon Magno church, which was built on the site of an Islamic mosque. It was transformed into a Christian place of worship in the 16th Century after the Spanish Reconquista. However, three of the original mosque’s arches can still be seen at the entrance. There are also signs of an Islamic fortress in the village and from the Mirador de la Virgen, near Plaza del Castillo and Calle Calzada, the ruins of the original castle wall, which would have surrounded the village during the Moorish era, can be seen. Again after the Spanish Reconquista in the 15th Century, the fort was transformed into a Christian castle. The Mirador de la Virgen looks out over La Maroma and the rest of the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountain range. 32
The DIRECTORY April 2018
The old part of the village is similar to others in the Axarquía and has some excellent examples of Mudéjar architecture. Along with the church, of particular note are the ‘Casa de los Diezmos’, which is situated in front of the town hall and was home to the village’s tax office when Canillas de Aceituno belonged to the Marques of Comares. Another example is the ‘Casa de la Reina Mora.’ In fact the village forms part of the Ruta Mudéjar de la Axarquía, which takes in examples of Mudéjar architecture in the area. Festivals Ferias and festivals form an important part of life in our villages and of course, Canillas de Aceituno is no exception. The big festival takes place in April and is known as the Día de la Morcilla (black pudding). The tradition of serving up black pudding on the last Sunday in April has, since 2004, been recognised by the Junta de Andalucía as an important tourist event. The day also includes a procession with the village’s patron saint, Our Lady of the Head (La Virgen de la Cabeza). The village’s main feria takes place over the second weekend in August and is held in honour of La Virgen de la Cabeza. The first night is given over to flamenco and the other days involve children’s activities, live music and dancing. Canillas de Aceituno also celebrates San Isidro in May, like many other Axarquía towns and villages, as he is the patron saint of labourers and agriculture. Residents of the village take part in a Romería (pilgrimage) to the La Lomilla religious site. As Brits we cannot talk about Canillas de Aceituno without mentioning its relationship with the royal family. In fact we’ve dedicated a whole page to it! See Did You Know on page 61. Briefly, a children’s clothing company based in the village caught the attention of international press when both Prince George and Princess Charlotte were photographed by Hello! magazine wearing clothes made by the company, Mi Lucero.

Gastronomy Canillas de Aceituno is also known for its ‘chivo’ or suckling goat (kid). Traditionally it’s cooked in an oven with olive tree wood. It is easily found in local restaurants and there is even a local company dedicated to preparing and selling it (www.chivodecanillas. com). Nature and outdoor activities There are plenty of opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities around Canillas de Aceituno, including hiking up La Moroma, Malaga province’s highest mountain, at 2,065 metres above sea-level. Also the Fájara caves, los Tajos Lisos and the start of the River Bermuza. A walkway known as El Saltillo, is a little-known mini Caminito del Rey in the Axarquía, this vertigo-inducing path has been recently modernised and although not for the feint-hearted, is described as a “brief but intense” experience.
The steep climb to get there follows the Almanchares River which runs between the village and nearby Sedella. For further information about accessing El Saltillo and other hiking and climbing opportunities, visit www. canillasdeaceituno.com or ask at the town hall on Plaza de la Consitución. There is a large foreign population, especially Brits, Danes and Belgians, who live in the ‘campo’ around Canillas de Aceituno, although the population of the village itself is still predominantly Spanish. How to get there From Vélez-Málaga take the A-356 north and turn onto the MA-125 which is clearly signposted a little further north from Trapiche. The road is in good condition, although there were signs of minor landslides when we went in early March after the heavy rainfall.

say no to diabetes Diabetes is something that we want to avoid almost at all costs. There is now a book available on the book reading site platypup. com where you can learn a lot about how to avoid and how to control Diabetes. Diabetes is one thing but in reality, we want to be healthy, we don’t want to be sick at all. Most conditions of illness, like Diabetes, comes from a number of factors that all have to be taken care of properly. It may be that you have a somewhat troublesome stomach today and tomorrow you develop Diabetes. To avoid and control this you need knowledge which is not easily available in one place, and the book orients you to be fully prepared to stop bad things in their tracks and to minimise damage once done. Most information about Diabetes and about the importance of correct nutrition mean well. Actions which are promoted for you to take, sometimes intend to help you and sometimes they just want to sell you something that may or may not work for you. The only way of navigating in this largely commercial jungle is to have correct data that you yourself can verify as true because they lead to results for you. Some of the data in the book are controversial as they have not been studied in a sufficiently large number of cases. They look at Diabetes from the viewpoint of what is actually happening in the human body and the sequences that lead up to various conditions of illness. The book is therefore not only about Diabetes but gives you an understanding of what is going on so that you can do something about it. After all, the only one who really knows what you feel, and knows what is happening is you yourself. Without knowledge, we are lost and all becomes a mystery. The book will also make you aware of that
there The areDIRECTORY several variants of Diabetes II 44 April 2018
depending on the status of the involved organs, and that in order to attempt to control Diabetes it is absolutely necessary to detect and be aware of those stages. Diabetes is largely treated by the medical profession as an illness handled by prescribed routines while in reality a lot of attention should be invested in each individual case. If you already are a Diabetic, this book will help you control your Diabetes and avoid medication that can actually worsen your situation. Illnesses are complex mental and physiological interactions and all cases are individual and should be viewed and treated from a holistic viewpoint. Are you a Diabetic or do you want to avoid becoming one? One of the most rapidly growing medical conditions is Pre-diabetes. Although it is not considered to be an illness, it is a very real condition which means nothing less than that Diabetes may be lurking around the corner, ready to strike at any moment. Sometimes the condition is called The Metabolic Syndrome, again a very diffuse medical term that indicates that the Metabolism of a person is operating in a non-optimum way. Behind the need for these terms is the awareness that Diabetes to a large degree is a metabolic disorder and in order to prevent it, it is necessary to see signs that point to the possibility of contracting Diabetes in the future. If you see the signs, you can prevent what is coming so that it never occurs. The impact of Diabetes goes beyond chronic hyperglycemia, (high blood glucose). Diabetes is the leading cause of

The DIRECTORY April 2018
…that there is a link between the Axarquía and the British royal family? A small, family-run children’s clothes company based in Canillas de Aceituno makes a little blue cardigan worn by Prince George and photographed by Hello! magazine as he left St Mary’s hospital with his dad, The Duke of Cambridge, after visiting his new-born sister, Princess Charlotte, in 2015! The same cardigan (well, I guess we will never know whether Charlotte actually gets George’s hand-me-downs or if it was a different one) was being worn by the princess when she was photographed, aged two. The company, Mi Lucero, has a Spanish client in the London borough of Chelsea and it is said that the royal children’s Spanish nanny, María Teresa Turrión, introduced the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, to the shop, knowing that they stocked Spanish products. The secret to Mi Lucero’s success, according to Beatriz López, who works for the company and whose husband and bother-in-law, Dani and José Martín Aranda, design the clothes, is the fact that they are made with high-quality wool and are seamless, meaning that the clothes don’t rub on babies’ skin. The company has been in Canillas de Aceituno for 45 years and employs between 15 and 18 people at any one time. The clothes, which range from newborn to 12 years, are made using latest generation machines, but each item is finished by hand, including sewing on the bows and labels. As well as the UK, the company also sells clothes in Spain, Germany and Italy and says that it was only when the client in Chelsea contacted them to say that the cardigan had appeared in Hello that they learned about their royal connections. The team told us that they are planning to send a gift to the royals when baby number three is born in April. In the meantime, there is a shop attached to the factory where anyone can buy clothes and I firmly believe that the price I paid for the little blue cardigan at the shop in Canillas de Aceituno for my 5-year-old niece was not what Kate Middleton would have paid for hers in Chelsea! Check www.milucero.es for further information. 61
