A-Z Business Directory & Articles
The number of international buyers in Southern Spain has increased for the last twelve consecutive quarters. The annual growth in foreign buyers in the Málaga province shot up 25.4% in Q3 2013, the highest rise recorded across Spain, and speculation is that, particularly in Málaga province, we could reach record highs during this year.

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION
Water Deposits & Tanks: - as they are sometimes called - are a vital part of managing your water requirements in your home. Here in Andalusia the mains water supply can often be cut for several days or were the water pressure can fall to a trickle. Water tank application parameters include the general design of the tank, its materials of construction, as well as the following: Location of the water tank (above ground vs. below ground) Volume of water the tank will need to hold What the water will be used for (drinking vs. irrigation) Temperature of area where water will be stored Pressure requirements (domestic pressure range 35-60 PSI) Methods by which water is delivered into and extracted from the water tank Design considerations allowing water tanks to survive seismic movement and natural land movement Back flow prevention Chemical injection for bacteria and virus controls
As water tanks are essential for living in the countryside in Spain, it’s important that they are installed correctly. Contact LT Construction and talk to us when considering a new tank or upgrading your existing system.

REAL ESTATE GUIDE The Catastro The Catastro is a comprehensive register of all land and real estate in the whole of Spain. It contains details of the number and location of all plots of land, the boundaries, the position of the house and pool (if applicable), the class of the land, the area of the land in m² and the name(s) of the owner(s). The Land Registry The Catastro is different from the Land Registry where your land and property are registered when you buy – an extract from the Land Registry appears in your Escritura - it is called the Nota Simple. Surprisingly (or not!) information held by these two departments can often be different. Even if your property is registered correctly at the Land Registry, it might not be correctly registered in the Catastro. Problems with the Catastro Often described as the ‘other Land Registry’, the information held in the Catastro is frequently inaccurate. The boundaries and location of your land may be specified correctly, but your personal details might not be correctly registered. Or, your land might be shown completely incorrectly. Or, your house might be registered in your name, but the land registered in another name, sometimes that of the previous owner. Even if you used the services of a lawyer when you bought your house and the extract from the Land Registry (the Nota Simple) in your Escritura is correct, the details entered in the Catastro can still be wrong. If the information held by the Catastro is incorrect, this can delay a sale, particularly if the buyer requires a mortgage. How to Resolve Problems with the Catastro The Catastro can easily be amended by having a topographic survey of your land undertaken. This entails the services of a surveyor who will walk the boundaries of your land with you and plot them accurately using GPS technology. He or she will then draw up comprehensive plans of your house and your pool (if applicable) and submit these details to the Catastro office along with your Escritura and your correct personal details. The Catastro will then be updated with the right information. This whole process can take some considerable time so it is advisable to have the relevant checks made without delay so as not to hinder the sale of your property. 28

WELLBEING
WELLBEING How Healthy Is Your Diet? A good daily diet should include the 6 main components, protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. There are many weight loss diets, low- fat ones, low carb, low calories being the main ones, but if your body isn’t getting the correct intake in the correct balance, then initial weight loss will occur, but either stop, or after stopping the diet, the weight comes back on (and more) and you run a high risk of becoming nutritionally deficient. For long term healthy weight loss it’s essential to understand the body consists of bones, fat and muscle (and a few other elements) and therefore to understand how food reacts once in the body is vital in order to make good choices daily. Many diets control calories only, so people tend to cut protein as they are high in calories, and increase elsewhere, but as protein is not stored, neither are the calories. Also by cutting protein you get rid of the muscle growing ability, which removes your fat burning capacity. So the scales look lighter, but what are you losing? A combination of fat and mainly muscle. Losing the muscle means your metabolism will slow down so you retain fat and will plateau at some stage. Use the scales but measurements are far more important. A balanced breakfast is the best thing to kick start your metabolism. Cereal toast, porridge are mainly carbs hence sugar - the body needs protein, vitamins and minerals and water, and few carbs. Eating those carb foods will increase your sugar levels and as the levels are bought down, you will be left craving more carbs - your day will be like this all day. Start with nothing and the opposite happens, sugar levels crash and you grab the first thing, setting you off on peaks and troughs all day too, all the while storing fat! How healthy is your daily intake? Contact Mei Flynn for a FREE wellness evaluation and nutritional advice to help you achieve weight loss and/or wellness goals and give your body the best nutrition – it’s the house you live in so take care of it!! 38

HERB OF THE MONTH CALENDULA / MARIGOLD: Calendula
species have been used traditionally as culinary and medicinal herbs. The petals are edible and can be used fresh in salads or dried and used to colour cheese or as a replacement for saffron. Romans and Greeks used the golden calendula in many rituals and ceremonies, sometimes wearing crowns or garlands made from the flowers. One of its nicknames is “Mary’s Gold,” referring to the flowers’ use in early Catholic events in some countries. Calendula flowers are sacred flowers in India and have been used to decorate the statues of Hindu deities since early times. Calendula oil is still used medicinally as an anti-inflammatory and a remedy for healing wounds. Studies have suggested that Calendula extracts have antiviral, antigen toxic and anti-inflammatory properties. Calendula in tincture is used topically for treating acne, reducing inflammation, controlling bleeding, and soothing irritated tissue (sun burn) psoriasis or dermatitis. Calendula is being used specially for babies skin. Calendula has been used traditionally for abdominal cramps, gastric and duodenal ulcers or infections. A study reported in the 2009 issue of Phytotherapy Research found that calendula was one of the most effective herbs for inhibiting the growth of Campylobacter jejuni, a common bacterial cause of severe diarrhoea in children. Some more recent studies showed that Calendula might be even used against cancer soon: Calendula shows some potential for fighting cancer. A study published in the 2006 issue of BMC Cancer found that an extract of
calendula killed cancerous melanoma cells and stimulated lymphocytes, the white blood cells of the immune system. Another 2006 study, published in the Journal of Natural Products, found that two triterpene glycosides in calendula flowers had a toxic effect against colon cancer, leukaemia and melanoma. In Rincón Natural we offer the oil, tincture, dried flowers and different cosmetics created on the base of Calendula flowers.

HOW TO START BEING MORE SUCCESSFUL
Your Attitude to Success Welcome to the first of a new 6 part series to help you ‘Start Being More Successful’. Each month I will discuss a vital topic that impacts your ability to succeed and provide a little practical exercise to challenge you.
PART 1
Let’s start by discussing your ‘Success Attitude’. An ‘ATTITUDE’ is the way you think and feel about someone or something. We usually adopt an attitude to something or someone only after making a judgement. It is this judgement that creates either a positive or negative attitude and dictates whether it works for you or against you. Your attitudes can become useful resources for success or success inhibitors that get in your way. So what are your attitudes to success? Grab a pen and paper now and do the following quick exercise – do it now! Exercise - Test your attitude to success: 1. Remember a time when you saw someone who was very successful, or heard someone telling you about their successes. 2. What did you think about what they were saying? 3. How did you feel towards the other person? These thoughts and feelings will determine your ‘SUCCESS ATTITUDE’. Now write down on your paper in one or two sentences your ‘SUCCESS ATTITUDE’. If you do not have a positive ‘success attitude’ you are unlikely to achieve the success you want. Change your attitude now by choosing to change how you think and feel about success and successful people! This one thing may be the difference that makes the difference in bringing the success you want into your life! In part 2 we will explore your success beliefs. I am always interested in your views so let me know how this article has affected your thinking.

GIG GUIDE & MUSIC
MUSIC SCENE Midnight Mechanics is a 3 piece rock
band based in Nerja and consists of Guitar/ Vocalist Lee Townsend, Gaz Townsend on Bass Guitar and Vocals and Torrox drummer, Hector Lopez. The band was formed at the end of 2011 when Lee and Gary’s previous endeavour with “Not To Fall” had disbanded. They decided to recruit Hector as they’d seen him play before in various bands in the area.
The band began gigging on the local scene, both in bars and at private events, working hard to build their reputation as one of the best live bands in the area. They play a mixture of covers from artists such as Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Elvis Costello and Roy Orbison right through to more modern material such as Kaiser Chiefs, Kings of Leon and Muse. Midnight Mechanics have 2 strong vocalists in Lee and Gary and one of the most versatile drummers on the coast in Hector, making them the ideal outfit to

gig guide Mel´s Music Monthly Where to go for Music: If you are visiting Nerja and the area for the first time this year, you would probably like to catch some of the great music talent that there is locally, so this month I will set out a few ideas and where could be worthwhile. Naturally,if you are staying in a hotel, they do provide music entertainment which is to a high standard. On those nights that you don’t fancy what´s on offer, then try some Bars where live music is available. El Varadero on Nerjas´ Playazo beach has live music on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays which are at times which are very agreeable either in the afternoon or early evening. For the late nighter, try Rio´s in Tuttu fruitti in Nerja´s main town where from 10 in the evening there is a great selection of live music every Thurs, Friday & Sunday. In Torrox, the best place for live music is to go to Racing Club Axarquia which on Saturday and Sunday from 7 till 10 have great guest bands from around the region. In Frigiliana, every Tuesday evening during the Summer the restaurant Sal y Pimienta have Live Music from 9 till 12. BUSINESS MARKETING TIPS Why Your Business Needs a Website. It’s 2014 and the internet revolution has arrived, settled in and decided to stay. As much as you may want to, you can’t ignore it for much longer if you want your business to attract new customers. A website will increase your business profile and brand awareness, particularly if coupled with a dedicated social media campaign. When it comes to internet marketing, Spain is definitely behind many countries, but don’t use that as an excuse to not have an online presence – use it as a reason to have one. When Spain does finally catch up, and it will, you will already have a head start over your competitors. Websites allow you to reach people you wouldn’t ordinarily reach, breaking down geographical barriers and widening your audience base. A website is open 24 hours a day, meaning it has the potential to make you money whilst you sleep! Websites provide flexibility. Do you have a special offer, a sale, guest performers, new products etc.? If so, promote it via your website – a fantastic way of keeping your customers informed of your latest company news. The presence of a website instils credibility in your company & confidence in your customers, particularly if it contains an address, contact details, portfolio of work and testimonials, something which can ordinarily take years to earn. Websites make fantastic online catalogues . You can show all your products online, which can not only drastically reduce your printing costs but it can be updated easily, daily if necessary, keeping your customer up to date with your products and services. From personal experience… When we made the recent move to Spain we knew noone. No mechanics, restaurants, vets, doctors …no-one! Very similar to most ex-pats I suppose. So, what’s the first thing we did to find out about these vital services? LOOKED ONLINE. As you have probably guessed, this was a rather fruitless endeavour. We have since heard the same story from countless people. There is currently such an enormous gap in the market, so utilise the opportunity. We so often hear that business is done by word of mouth in Spain. It’s not what you know it’s who you know, but, if you don’t know anyone then this old adage is about as useful as a chocolate teapot!
