¡GIVE ME FIVE! TO SUPPORT ANIMAL PROTECTION Handlers and Dogs, Greetings! If you are not familiar with the Give Me Five animal charity, there are two ways of understanding our project: the Right Way and the Other Right Way. In the first case, we raise money through the sale of memberships, the organising of fund-raising events as well as via direct donations. The cost for a membership is 50€ for six months (27,4 cents per day). These funds are then distributed to animal rescue groups based on the Costa del Sol/Tropical east of Malaga. The second way of understanding Give Me Five is as a consumer group. What we do is ask local businesses if they will give a 5% discount on their goods or services to Give Me Five members. If so, all advertising is free in our quarterly Booklet as well as through promotion on our Facebook page and in the reception of our dental clinic Dentadanés in Maro. The key to making Give Me Five a success is to continue to find more and more quality businesses to partner with us. The more businesses that join, the more benefits there will be for Give Me Five members. And the more memberships we sell the more money we can donate to to the animal charities who it must be said provide an invaluable service to our communities, though one that should be provided by the town halls. (That’s another story.) So a big thank you to the following businesses who have recently joined forces with Give Me Five: Globoteca in Nerja, Diva’s Boutique & Emporium at Puente don Manuel, Centro Mar y Salud in El Morche, Veterinarian clinic Dolittle in Torrox Costa, Cocinas Nerja and our featured Business partner this quarter Salablanca with showrooms in La Herradura, Nerja and Marbella. VOL.03 SUMMER2017 2017 VOL.03 SUMMER

The money we raise is donated to the following animal rescue groups, all of whom do phenomenal work under extremely exacting conditions: vAxarquia Animal Rescue (AAR), Asociacón Preotectora de Animales Incón de la Victoria (APARiV), A.P.A Nerja Estación Esperanza, Costa Animal Society (CAS), Torrox Animal International League (TAIL), Galgo Freedom, Valle Verde Animal Rescue and Give A Dog A Home Rescue Malaga. You can contact Give Me Five via Facebook: /givemefiveanimalcharityspain, or ring me: Scott Houston on 603 416 632. 6

Currency News Transferring your money at the right time When sending money overseas, making the right decisions, including the transfer time, is essential. This may seem a bit daunting, but don’t worry, currency transfer specialists have developed many tools to help you get it right, and avoid losing out in poor exchange rates.

Setting up Rate Alerts As 2016 demonstrated, the currency market is hugely volatile and exchange rates can fluctuate dramatically in a short space of time. Currency experts know that following these rate variations is essential to find the right time to transfer money overseas, therefore, they give you the option to set up Rate Alerts. All you have to do is to tell them your desired rate; they will follow the markets on your behalf and whenever your target rate has been achieved, they will inform you by email or SMS.

Asking for expert guidance Understanding the market movements is also vital to make the right money transfer decisions. Unlike traditional banks, currency transfer specialists are concentrated on foreign exchange markets, so they are able to provide you the guidance you need. They offer a personalised service which includes communications with a dedicated account manager and access to online tools such as currency charts; allowing you to follow the evolution of your currency; and regular market updates which are delivered straight into your email inbox. Although there isn’t any magical tool to predict the future variations of exchange rates, the elements mentioned above, combined with help from currency specialists, will enable you to assess the appropriate time for your transfer. LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD The rain pours down. For us, who had been living on Costa del Sol for 6 months, this was the first day our children had to wear rubber boots. On Christmas Day 2014, we were in Chefchaouen, Morocco. Our children asked to go visit the local children and our host Jaber kindly offers to take us to the local village school. We celebrated Christmas Eve the Swedish way with a Moroccan touch yesterday with one big difference from other years, our children only had a few small gifts. The journey we are on, living to love the road, is the big gift. We drive a few kilometers up the mountain to Akerate village, Jaber´s family village. A small, concrete built, run down school appears on the left hand side of the road. We park and I can sense my children´s reaction, is this the school? So much unlike the buildings they both have attended in Onsala and Göteborg, Sweden, and the village school in Torrox, Spain. Jaber invites us into the first classroom and Lucas (then 9 years), says: “Mom, please turn on the lights, it is so dark in here.” I kindly whisper to him: Sorry my son, there is no electricity. “But I see the poles out there”, he says persistently. “You need to fix it Mom!”. No, I say, but we can do it together.

In the meantime, my daughter Maj is asking her Dad to go and get her sneakers in the car. “I am going to give my rubber boots away now, this boy has only sandals and it is raining”. At this time, tears stream down my cheeks I realize the Christmas and life miracle of giving is happening right here. We greet all children in four classrooms and a while later it is time for a break. Lucas gets one of his two Christmas gifts from the car, his soccer ball. Without hesitation, he gives it to his new friends. Lucas fundraises €55 with his former classmates in Sweden in the next few weeks and pays for the electrician to come and fix the lights in all four Akerate School classrooms. It also pays for light bulbs for a year. As a family, we agree to start a non-profit organization that today is the Vilostrada Foundation. All children and people have the right to education and right now our current mission is the project “Education for Life” with the nomads in Sahara. How all that happened, you can read more about in September! Follow my Moroccan tracks during 2017. Victoria Ahlén, founder of Vilostrada, is an expert Moroccan artisan buyer, and founder of the Vilostrada Foundation - building the world’s greatest school together with the Nomads in Sahara, Morocco.

A word which resonates with summer partying in Spain is Feria; every single city, town and village has at least one and they usually take place between late spring and early autumn. The word ‘Feria’ translates into English as ‘Fair,’ ‘Festival,’ ‘Exhibition,’ Funfair,’ ‘Trade fair’…in fact the list is pretty much infinite. The Spanish definition of the word is ‘an economic, social or cultural event’ and one of the early concepts of a ‘Feria’ was an event during which livestock and agricultural goods were bought and sold. One theory of the modern-day feria is that it evolved from the early agricultural fair and gradually grew into more of a cultural event as amusements were introduced as well as food and drink to keep the families of farmers entertained while the land and farm owners themselves went about their business. The Malaga Feria is the biggest in the province and attracts people from towns and villages across the area and beyond. It takes place in the week leading up to 19 August, which is a local bank holiday, commemorating the day in 1487, when the city was reconquered by Fernando and Isabel, the Catholic King and Queen, ending Islamic rule. The city’s festivities date back to 1887, when there was interest among the residents to mark the fourth centenary of the day Malaga was taken back by the Spanish Crown. In addition, during the 1880s Malaga was undergoing a series of crises, including a recession, which had led to mass emigration. The province had experienced a devastating earthquake on Christmas Day 1884, as well as floods and epidemics. All in all it was felt that residents of the city needed cheering up. So, the idea of the first ‘Feria de Malaga’ was born. The first event wasn’t much different from the Feria of the 21st Century and was complete with the all-important advertising poster which is the object of great competition every year, processions in honour of the city’s patron saint; the Virgen de la Victoria, bull fighting, concerts and a big party aimed at including people from all backgrounds and classes. What was possibly the most exciting part of the Feria back in 1887 was the electric lighting which illuminated the dock and the Malagueta area, around the bullring. Due to the economic problems facing the city, neither the city hall nor the Diputación (provincial government) were able to pay for the event, so Malaga’s wealthiest families were called upon to contribute what they could. The campaign worked well and enough money was raised to pay for the extravagant party, which lasted from 18th until 31st August. Since then, Malaga has partied in style, with a weeklong feria around the 19th August - a local bank holiday known as ‘Incorporación de Málaga a la Corona de Castilla.’ Nowadays, the city celebrates a ‘day feria’ around the city centre and a ‘night feria,’ in the purposebuilt Recinto Real de la Feria (royal fairground) just north of the city centre. This year Feria will take place from 12 – 19 August. Look out for Cartojal, a sweet Malaga wine, which is sold in plastic bottles and is the traditional Feria alcoholic drink. Bar El Pimpi in Malaga city centre has a superb collection of old Feria posters on its walls. For further information and a programme of events visit: www.malagaturismo.com/es/site/feriademalaga 16

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS)

Divorce law and maintenance In 1979 Lord Scarman sought to emphasise the principle of a clean break when a marriage ends in divorce - “An object of the modern law is to encourage [the parties] to put the past behind them and to begin a new life which is not overshadowed by the relationship which has broken down”. Yet this year, some 15 years after a divorce, an ex-husband was ordered to increase the amount of maintenance he was paying to his wife from £1,100 to £1,441 per month. This was despite the fact they had been divorced for more years than they had been married. In English judicial decision-making, there is always an emphasis on treating each case on its merits. In this case, Mills v Mills, the ex-wife had lost her capital as a result of non-profitable investments in property. Her barrister argued in court that she had not been “profligate or wanton” and had also suffered health problems arising from the stress caused by credit card debt. This brief report does not indicate how much wealth the husband had so it would be wrong to assume there were not good grounds for the decision.

a couple will have is that if they marry in gananciales - community of property they will know they have a 50/50 share in everything acquired during the marriage. Some assets are excluded such as inherited property and previously acquired property, but drawing up an inventory and splitting everything 50/50 does bring certainty. A couple in Spain can choose to marry in separación de bienes which is separation of assets and each retains sole ownership of their assets. In any divorce there are very particular circumstances, so this article can only provide a broad brush approach to the financial matters. If you require any advice on divorce and financial matters you can contact us on info@decottalaw.net or call for a confidential consultation on 952 527 014.

The case though does highlight the different attitudes towards ongoing maintenance and it is interesting to see the principles applied in other jurisdictions. For example, in Scotland the law does not allow the imposition of lifetime maintenance. This is similar in Spain where the payment of a “pension compensatoria” generally lasts for two to three years. In Spain, however, there are generally far less disputes over matrimonial finances because a couple on marriage will know their “matrimonial regime”. The certainty 21

From Snap Shot to Great Shot Use Your Camera Settings to Help When you’re after sharp images, there’s a few things your camera can to do help your tripod get you the best results. Before we get into setting and to follow up from last month here’s a couple tips to buying your first tripod consider your budget first, but remember buy cheap is not a good idea. A cheap tripod will be unstable and will possibly give worse results than a hand-held camera at the correct setting and second you are going to strap your expensive camera to it so you don’t want it to collapse or fall over. Camera setting for tripod, using a faster shutter speed in the daytime enables you to minimize the time the shutter is open, thereby minimizing the time the camera has to shake and induce blur. This is advantageous on windy days. When shooting at night, if you need to speed up the shutter to avoid blurry shots, boost the ISO and/or open the aperture to let in more light, thereby allowing you to speed up the shutter as needed. You can also use your camera’s self-timer to get sharper photos. Just the act of pressing the shutter button - even 24

The DIRECTORY August 2017

when your camera is mounted to a tripod - can cause enough vibration to reduce the sharpness of the shot. By using your camera’s self-timer, though, you can minimize those vibrations by giving the camera a few seconds before it fires the shutter or use a remote trigger. Another setting to try is mirror lock up if you shoot with a DSLR. When you press the shutter button, the camera’s mirror lifts up to expose the sensor to light. That movement can cause vibrations that make your images less sharp, so by locking the mirror in place, you maximize the camera’s ability to take a sharp photo. This trick is particularly helpful when you’re shooting with a slow shutter speed. Engaging mirror lock up is different from one camera to the next, so check your owner’s manual for instructions on how to do it. So, there you have it! A few tricks that will help you get sharper photos when shooting with a tripod-mounted camera. Rob Bell Photography. Capturing a Moment in Time. www.robbell.photography

OUT AND ABOUT

out and about in RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA Rincón de la Victoria has become in recent years somewhat of a dormitory town for people who work in Malaga but who are either looking for somewhere cheaper, or indeed quieter, to live. However, local companies and residents are keen to shift this image and have stated a petition in favour of giving the town the status it rightfully deserves. There is definitely more to the western-most area of the Axarquía… With a population of 44,000 according to the 2016 Spanish national statistics office (ONE) it is the second most populated town in the east of Malaga area, after Vélez-Málaga. According to a 2013 survey, it also boasts the highest GDP per capita in Malaga province. Other coastal places 34

The DIRECTORY August 2017

which belong to Rincón de la Victoria local authority are La Cala del Moral, Torre de Benagalbón and Los Rubios, further inland is Benagalbón. Rincón de la Victoria was an important strategic town during the Islamic period in Spain and was known as Bezmiliana. The two key industries were agriculture and fishing and by the end of the 19th Century the town was firmly established as a fishing village. Both industries remain important today in terms of tourism, with the Ruta del Sol y Aguacate (sun and avocado route) passing through Rincón de la Victoria and also taking in Macharaviaya, Iznate, Benamocarra, Benamargosa and Vélez-Málaga. The town is also famous for its Fiesta del Boquerón

only marine cave open to the public in Europe. Historical artefacts from Neolithic to Islamic ceramics were found in the cave and legend has it that Muslim emperor, Tasufin Ibn Ali, hid treasure in it. A series of ‘rooms’ are named after objects and cave paintings found in them, including the Eagle Room, so called because of a figure of the bird looks like it is diving on prey from the sky and the volcano room gets its name from its slightly higher temperature due to being the deepest part of the cave. The caves are free to visit on Mondays and provide the perfect cool place to visit to escape the summer heat.

in September, celebrating one of Malaga’s most important fish – whitebait (or white anchovy). More of the area´s history is revealed in the Cueva del Tesoro (treasure cave). Discovered in 1951 by Manuel Laza, this is the

RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

Another point of historical interest in the town is the Casa Fuerte Bezmiliana, which is on the main road to the east of the town. This old fort was built in the 18th Century to complement the existing watch towers along the coast and today it is regularly used as exhibition space and has housed a number of exhibitions by foreign artists. Well-kept gardens sit in front of the fort and it’s another great place to hide from the sun in summer!

The Mediterranean Archaeological Park and Museum of Popular Arts are both well worth visiting too. The former boasts 90,000 square metres of native Mediterranean vegetation, prehistory and a 1:1 scale replica of the treasure cave. The latter gives an interesting insight into the area’s cultural heritage including how a farmlabourer’s house would have looked like as well as farm implements, all of which have been donated by residents of the town. Rincón de la Victoria was a stop on the old railway from Malaga to Zafarraya, the ‘Cochinita’ and although all that is left of the train is the town’s train station, it can still be seen in the town centre, on the paseo marítimo (promenade) and now houses the well-stocked tourist information centre. A small replica of the train stands outside the entrance.

Beaches

Rincón de la Victoria has a number of beaches, starting with La Cala del Moral, which has a blue flag. Just west of La Cala del Moral is El Arroyo Totalán beach, which is dog-friendly. Rincón de la 35

Victoria itself has a 3.6 kilometre stretch of coastline, with a promenade and a large number of beach bars, restaurants, sunshades, water sports and shops. To the east is Torre de Benagalbón beach which has no promenade; something that residents do not wish to see as they believe building such a structure would cause major damage to the natural ecosystem of sand dunes in the area and have been protesting to the local council and Junta de Andalucía about in recent months. Finally Los Rubios beach which is just over a kilometre long has a marked hiking route and amenities.

Festivals

Rincón de la Victoria has a year-round calendar of events, starting with its own King’s Day parade on 5 January, Carnival in February, Easter Week in March or April, tapas routes (normally around June), Noche en Blanco, San Juan celebrations, Rincón de la Victoria Feria (fair) takes place between 14 and 17 July and is in honour of the town’s patron saint – La Virgin del Carmen, who is patron saint to fishermen. The Fiesta del Boquerón

Victoriano (Victorian whitebait festival) is in September. In 2017 it will take place on 23 and 24th September and literally hundreds of kilos of the famous fish will be prepared in typical ways; either fried or in vinegar with garlic and parsley, for residents and visitors to try.

Services

A regular bus service links Rincón de la Victoria with Malaga and buses from Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar also stop in the town (check that the bus you catch is ‘ruta’ and not ‘directo’ as it’s only the ‘ruta’ ones that go via Rincón.) The town is moderately big and has all services, including supermarkets, schools, health centres and a number of shops, most of which are situated along the main N340 road which runs parallel to the promenade. There are a number of hotels in the town, again most of which are on the N340. sexual orientation There is a worldwide movement to define sexual orientations. The simple biological fact that one is man or woman is put aside in order to avoid discrimination. A large number of identity stamps have been proposed. In reality there are probably as many variants as there are people. We all have characteristics that are distinctly ours even if it is easier to put people in to `boxes´ according to race, colour, religious beliefs and now sexual orientation. In the name of being equal one can say that women and men are absolutely alike, but are we also biologically identical? Regardless of what we think, it is clearly not so. The differences can be used in order to discriminate so that only men get certain jobs, are paid more than women doing the same job and hundreds of other things. The solution is to handle the real problems connected, not eradicate the biological difference between man and women. Regarding the sexual differences, a person can be more interested in the opposite sex or the same sex or in no sex at all. This may lead to that he or she cannot be open about it; will be vulnerable to abuse or discrimination at work or in society etc. Sexuality in the human race as well in any animal species is a strong force related to the propagation of the species. As it is also strongly connected to feelings of pleasure it is easy to see that deprivation in whatever form can lead to anxieties and odd behaviour without necessarily needing to be cured. Are these behaviours with us from birth? If not there are a lot of psychological text books that need to be rewritten. We are all to a degree born men and at the same time women. We are born with our personal combination of oestrogen and testosterone in order to be a man or a woman or something 50

in between. It should not come as a surprise that science never have found any other type of unbalance from birth. There is no homosexual gene. There is no special genetic, neuronic or chemical combination that explains sexual orientation. What we are missing here is that there is a part of us which is capable of constructing an almost infinite number of ideas. Our bodies couldn’t care less how we define ourselves. A body is always busy trying to survive and sex is the driving force to procreate whether that is biologically possible or not. It is thus logical to assume that something in us is interested in forming life in a specific and individual manner. That may be who we truly are. If that is so, we are neither men nor woman apart from our bodies. The rest are ideas about who we are. Love exists not only between men and women. Sex for the sake of sex pertains to the act itself. It is objectified and mechanic. Add love and you have a totally different quality of unity. Obviously we are born in one way and thereafter we form our own ideas about what that means. One has to recognise that we are all different and that’s all there is to it. There are many sources of feelings of anxiety and guilt, and repressed desires of any kind are difficult to live with. At Pies y Bienestar we are ready to support you on corporal, mental and social health to achieve the wellbeing we all want. NURSES NOTES NURSES NOTES Hip Pain. ? considering a hip replacement..? If the joint is stiff in the morning when you get out of bed and your favourite armchair isn’t so easy to get up from it’s often osteoarthritis, further indicators are the crunching /grating noise of bone on bone as you move. If bending has become more difficult and the hip has become tender and swollen it’s a good indicator that it is time to speak to your GP and get plans in place.

Preparing for surgery A good consultant will advise you on the benefits of weight loss prior to surgery. Being over weight is an added anaesthetic risk and makes getting mobile again that little bit harder. If the doctor doesn’t take blood at the planning stage ASK. This is where anaemia is picked up and treated and may save you getting into a hospital bed only to be cancelled if you are not “match fit”, if this is not picked up on it may be necessary for extra blood to be transfused delaying the mobility and recovery process.

Getting organised at home Find out what the operation entails so you know what to expect. In the UK you would routinely be given a leaflet, there are leaflets in Spain but you need to ask. If you need to go upstairs to bed have your bed brought downstairs, whilst you recover. Ideally get a raised toilet seat (get commode with legs that adjust the height). If you have a low bed and chair invest in “elephant feet” to raise the levels. If you are “chesty” or a smoker consider an electric bed. Spanish hospitals do not supply walking frames, crutches or sticks. Arrange your own! Remember it’s not one size fits all. Look critically at your home for trip hazards, loose rugs, wobbly toilet seat anything that could cause an accident. Arrange for transport to and from the hospital. If your transport is a small car consider a taxi for your return home. Master the technique for getting in and out of a car post op technique …. saves a lot of pain and dislocation risk. Arrange for a friend or a carer to stay with your for around two weeks, preferably someone who will encourage you to do the post op exercises and someone who will pamper you a bit.
