Property Guide Puzzle Pages Out and About Offers Inside What´s On Places to Eat and Drink
Dear Readers and Supporters We are into the hottest month now, and time to slow down, get to the beach or by the pool to try and keep yourself cool. Don´t forget you will need plenty of sunscreen and drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Talking of water, we have not had much rainfall for sometime, so please use it sparingly as there are notices in villages in the Axarquia to not use water unnecessary. We are in our third month with our Out and About articles and would like to say a big thank you to the great feedback that we have been receiving. This month is about Torrox Costa, so if you decide to take a visit then we hope you find the article useful and should you call in on any of the businesses mentioned please let them know you found them in The Directory. Outside of the Axarquia is Malaga Feria this month and also in Almunecar on the evening of 15th is La Fiesta de la Virgen de la Antigua where there is a fantastic firework display not to be missed.

ALARM SYSTEMS Protecting Your Home From Break-Ins. A break-in, even when you’re not there, has a major impact on your and your family’s sense of safety and well-being. Help protect your home from break-ins with HOME SECURITY TIPS from ¡PERFECT Alarm! S.L.
Tip No. 6: “burglarise” yourself
Yes, you read the title correctly. “Why in the world would I do that?”, you may be wondering. The reason is simple: Because if you can think of a clever way to break inside of your own home, we guarantee you a burglar can too. When you plan to burglarise yourself, you’ll quickly discover any weaknesses in your home security system that you may not have previously noticed. You can even turn it into a game and have some fun with your family or friends. Try to break into each other place and find the week spots. Doing so could end up being the difference between getting burglarised or not. For more information or a free demonstration, contact ¡Perfect Alarm! SL.

TRAVEL NEWS
Things are looking up for the tourist industry on the Costa del Sol, more people are returning to the ‘Coast of the Sun’ for their holiday’s. Also it is very good news for those who have made the region of Andalucia their home, with more options to fly home to visit loved ones. There are so many different holiday options now, whether you enjoy a beach location or country location. You can now easily combine either one of these with a stay in the beautiful cities of Malaga, Granada, Cordoba or Seville, or skiing in the Sierra Nevada’s from the end of November to late March. Andalucia is an amazing province of Spain with excellent travel options, by car, train or bus, making all the major cities easy to get too. Another Article You Probably Don´t Want To Read PIES Y BIENESTAR
Reading skills in the general population are so low, and we are in such a hurry, that anything that contains more than 140 words is indigestible. Health may be boring or uncomfortable This article concerns your health, something which you may find boring, if you already know that it is bad. If you were interested, you wouldn’t have caught on the extra kilos, clogged up you arteries with triglycerids, reduced your muscle mass by torturing your body with bad diets, until you look like you do. How long did it take you to arrive at the semi healthy state you are in? Do you promote to everyone you know that everything is fine? Why would you want to be reminded of something you have ignored or given up on? Do you want to read about harm, big names, big money, sex, etc? This article does not talk about interesting harmful events such as: “368 British windmill workers got cancer from eating poisoned carrot soup”, a completely fictitious event that sounds interesting. The article is also not about how you can gain 1 millon dollars from doing almost nothing, or how you in 10 minutes can rid yourself of wrinkles and other indicators that time is passing. It does not mention famous
TV stars or royalty that are sleeping with the neighbours, are ill or broke. The article doesn’t mention harm, big names, big money, sex, scandals, sensations etc. Boringly enough it is about your health. How have you managed to convince yourself that you are doing everything to maintain a happy and healthy life, even when it is not working? We all lie You can recover energy and acquire the knowledge necessary to be more healthy and happy. Regardless of your condition. If you have read this far, then there is hope for you. But you have to stop lying to yourself. You are the only one that needs to be in charge of your health and your life, no matter how many work, or family obstacles you believe is stopping you. In reality we always stop ourself. 43
WELLBEING If you are fat, no one held a gun to your head forcing you to eat garbage. If you are depressed, nobody can undepress you but you. You may need help but it is you, yourself, that must confront and do the job. It is actually more fun to get in shape, bodily, mentally emotionally and socially, than to stay fat, depressed and with low self esteem. You are worth something better. Do you agree? If you don’t agree then your case may be like the psychologist that told his patient why he suffered from an inferiority complex: “You are inferior”. That was a joke. You are not inferior, no matter what you are getting through. Something can always be done, and now you know that it is you that have to be doing it. New Algorithms on Facebook and Instagram Newsfeeds At Quantum23, we are a family run business and I share an office with my Mum. Scrolling through Facebook during lunch the other day, she mentioned to me how her newsfeed appears to have changed, no longer showing content in chronological order. “Oh, yes, Facebook and Instagram have changed their algorithms,” I said. Rumours have been circulating for months that Facebook and Instagram (which is owned by Facebook) are to change their newsfeed algorithms, panicking several social media marketers, including myself. This means changing how we market small businesses. The intention of the new algorithm is to show individual users posts that are more interesting to them first, prioritising family, friends and trending topics, rather than chronologically showing all posts. This will, generally
speaking, be more beneficial for individuals. How does this affect your Facebook and Instagram business pages? We have to be smarter and savvier if we want to generate engagement. With trending topics being prioritised alongside friends and family, jump on the bandwagon and you could see an increase in engagement. You shouldn’t use the topic to shamelessly pitch your business, especially if it has no relation to what is trending. That’s just bad marketing. Simply create an engaging post and allow people to flock to your business page and see what you’re about. It will take a while for marketers to fully understand new algorithms and work around them to market small businesses stay tuned for more tips and tricks! Produce great, relevant content to generate engagement - the rest will come. Call Eleanor Makin at Quantum23 to find out more about websites. See ad under Websites. 45
BREXIT Q & A SESSION by Jennie Rhodes Around 30 people attended a Brexit Q&A session at Legends bar in Torre del Mar on Thursday 14th July, with representatives from the financial and legal world on the panel. Legends owners Rachel and Shaun Barnett said that they decided to hold the event because of the wide ranging views and concerns of customers that come into the bar. They said they wanted to give Brits the “opportunity to come together for some guidance and to be able to engage with each other and share those concerns.” Panel members, Alex Radford, a lawyer with mylawyerinspain.com, Richard Mills a financial advisor with Blacktower Financial Management (International) Ltd., Melanie Radford from Currencies Direct and Antony Poole, a financial advisor with Robusto, answered questions ranging from concerns over pensions, mortgages, currency fluctuations and to making Wills. Until the UK government triggers Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon, signalling the start of negotiations to leave the EU and the subsequent agreements have been made, nobody really knows how Brexit will affect Brits in Spain. However, the session provided a useful opportunity to share concerns and hear some general advice on how to start preparing for the eventual outcome. So Brexit, will it happen or not? We are told Article 50 will be invoked early next year, giving us a 2018 date for formally leaving the EU, however conspiracy theorists suggest Article 50 will never be invoked and we will remain within the EU. Let us presume we eventually leave. During the 2 year period whilst the UK prepares to depart the EU, nothing will change apart from continued volatility in the currency markets, if you are entitled to Healthcare for example, this will remain unchanged. We can all talk about what if´s, but let´s be honest, none of us know what is to come post 2018 so why get ourselves worried and worked up about something none of can influence or control. Personally I am surprised at the amount of positive economic information coming through. Countries such as Australia, Canada, the USA, South Korea & India are all queuing up to begin trade deal discussions. The Swiss are keen to do a deal in order to try and keep Europe´s Financial Centre in London. Theresa May has begun to collect airmiles in what will be a gruelling first 12 months as Prime Minister as she attempts to persuade as many country leaders as possible to come to the negotiating table with a positive frame of mind. I have said all along, Europe needs us as much as we need Europe in terms of trade. Latest news is the suggestion that Britain could agree with the EU a 7 year ´brake´ on spoon; let cool. Rub off skin with paper towels. Separate tentacles and cut into equal lengths. Heat a large skillet, preferably cast iron, over medium-high heat. Toss octopus with 1 tablespoon oil and season with salt and pepper. Cook, turning occasionally, until charred, 8–10 minutes. Brush with some of the chilli sauce and cook, turning occasionally, until sauce is deeply caramelised, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and toss with butter to coat. Toss herbs, lime juice, and 1 tablespoon oil in a small bowl; season with salt and pepper. Do ahead: Octopus can be braised 2 days ahead. Cover and chill.

immigration. This is not only an attempt to appease those of us citing immigration as a definitive problem that needs solving, but also an attempt to quieten a growing number of EU member states who are starting to murmour that they to may follow the UK´s example in calling a referendum. In terms of the currency markets, we have seen in the last three weeks sterling to euro trading at between 1.16 & 1.20 – similar levels to this time 2014, the appointment of a new Prime Minister saw the pound settle at the 1.19/1.20 level where it has remained for the last 10 days or so. Unless there is dramatic news afoot, I expect it to remain at around this rate, before eventually starting to climb again. I hope this gives some of you an opportunity to budget accordingly! One final note, since the referendum, the UK has seen an increase of over 30% in terms of people considering moving abroad, with the majority of them still stating Spain as their preferred destination For more information call Melanie Radford at Currencies Direct. carried out scientific research in 2008, which demonstrated that Torrox has an average year-round temperature of 18 degrees centigrade. Torrox’s wide Paseo Marítimo, or promenade, is lined with restaurants and bars, or chiringuitos, serving anything from typical Malaga fried fish, to Italian, German and British food. Another famous sight on the promenade is the town’s Iberostar four-star hotel. The imposing building offers over 300 rooms, as well as apartments, three OUT AND ABOUT Torrox Costa
swimming pools and extensive gardens. But perhaps the most well-known landmark on the promenade is the lighthouse, situated on the mouth of the river Torrox and between Ferrara beach and Playa El Peñoncillo. It was built in 1865 on the site of a small castle which had been used as a look-out tower since its construction in 1510. The original castle was built to warn the town of pirate ships approaching land and was used during invasions in subsequent wars against other European countries, including France and Britain. In 1917 the lighthouse became electric. However, due to the frequent power cuts during Spain’s Civil War, the lighthouse’s lamp reverted back to being run on oil. The current system was installed in 1983 and that is the lighthouse we still see today. On the same site as the lighthouse, a museum stands today, known as the Conjunto Arqueológico El Faro – Centro de Interpretación Mansion Clavicum, exhibiting even earlier evidence of Torrox as an important fishing town; artefacts and ruins dating back to Roman times. The archaeological site was declared a site of cultural interest by the Spanish government’s sub-delegation for the protection of historic heritage ( Protección del Patrimonio Histórico) in 2007 and makes up the remains of the ancient Roman city of Clavicum, including a villa, necropolis, pottery kiln and baths, as well as examples of Roman pottery and even human skeletons. Entrance to the museum is free.
The best climate in Europe The Romana and Peñoncillo walking routes are also available around Torrox, which highlight important places in the ancient town of Clavicum, as well as points of interest at other times in Torrox’s history. Like any Spanish town, Torrox has a year-round programme of activities, some of which it shares with Torrox pueblo. From the Día del Turista (tourist day), which pays tribute to the town’s regular visitors and holiday-makers in September, to Oktoberfest, at the end of September, which has become a highlight in the town’s calendar, coming about mainly thanks to the large German population. The event generally takes place around the Avenida de América and on the Paseo Marítimo by the Ferrara beach. October also sees Feria, or fair, in Torrox Pueblo, while El Morche celebrates its local festival from 15 until 18 August this year. The famous Migas festival always takes place on the Sunday before Christmas, when the typical dish of migas (fried breadcrumbs) is served up with a glass of Moscatel wine. The festival celebrates the importance of agriculture in Torrox and migas are the traditional dish that was given to those working in the fields as a filling meal that OUT AND ABOUT Torrox Costa

would give them enough energy to work the long hours. Other summer activities that take place in Torrox Costa include an outdoor cinema at the lighthouse as well as music and dance performances on the Paseo MarĂtimo. Behind the Paseo, Torrox also offers a good size coastal towns with a range of services and amenities, including Russells British Stores, Lews Fish and Chips Restaurant, Craigs Steak house or Buddah House Restaurant on PeĂąoncillo, if you want to relax whilst you are in Torrox contact Sylvia Bowyer at the Rebeccah Curtis Wellbeing Centre for gentle solution for body pain. At Alegria you can enjoy Bed and Breakfast facilities and a Shiatsu healing massage. If you need mobility assistance, Blue Badge Mobility have a vast range of equipment for hire or sale. If you need insurance contact Mark Lewis at Lewis Insurance and if you fancy visiting other areas Schlosser Reisen organise daily excursions to Granada, Seville, Cordoba, Gibraltar and more destinations. Getting to Torrox is easy, as buses from Malaga and Torre del Mar pass through Torrox on their way to Nerja and a local bus service operates between Torrox Costa and Torrox Pueblo. While neighbouring Nerja has always tended to be more popular with British holidaymakers and foreign residents, Torrox has a higher German population and many choose the town as their holiday and retirement destination. Tourism really took off in Torrox in the early 1980s, a few years after the death of Francisco Franco, in 1975, which in turn ended almost 40 years of dictatorship in Spain. As the town claims to have the best climate in Europe a visit to Torrox is pleasant at any time of year, but as a coastal town perhaps summer is the ideal moment, to make the most of its nine kilometres of beaches! Yogi ADVENTURE It’s hot, hot, hot! So I thought you might like to cool off in Nerja Caves. Also, there’s an incredible picnic spot nearby, in case you’re feeling <reasonably> dynamic and fancy some stunning alpine vistas. The Caves are easy to get to. You can either drive on the Autovia or N340 - ‘Cuevas de Nerja’ are clearly marked on both. Or you can get a bus from the centre of Nerja. There is parking for the Caves, or you can park in the Pinarillo car park. This is the left turning before the Caves. Go easy if you have a hire care - it’s bumpy! Nerja Caves cost €10 for adults, €6 for children aged 6-12, and under 6s go free. Opening hours and details of their events and special tours are at www.thenerjacaves.com. On entry, you get an audio device, which looks like a mobile phone from the 80s. And, before you enter the caves, there’s a short film on their history. These vast caverns of stalagmites and stalactites stretch for almost 5 kilometres. So it’s hard to believe they were only rediscovered in 1959. And, according to remains, they were inhabited from 25,000BC to the Bronze Age. Carrying your 80s phone from chamber to chamber, you feel a sense of awe. And when you reach the ‘Cataclysm’ – the largest rockfall in the world – you can imagine how amazing it must have been for the 5 friends that discovered this underground world while exploring a random sinkhole. Anyway, back on ‘Tierra Firma’, the picnic spot is a gentle uphill walk up the road from the Pinarillo car park. Easy. Access for vehicles is restricted between June and October. But you can cycle or ride a horse (should you have either at hand). After almost 5km is El Pinarillo - a shaded picnic area surrounded by awe-inspiring mountains and forests. Without even a glimpse of the Med, all you can hear is the gentle humming of bees from nearby hives. It’s an oasis of calm away from the craziness of the coast. And it’s the perfect base for exploring the mountains during the winter months. Anyway, have a wonderful August. And if you fancy some relaxation and rejuvenation, come to one of my Yoga Lunches in Café Del Mar. Details are at Samadhi Mañana on Facebook. Hasta pronto!
