WELLBEING

The DIRECTORY In print, online, social media and on the move ... we´ve got it covered!

Happiness & Wellbeing We all more or less have our own concept of where to find happiness, some people measure their happiness by how much money they have, others by whether they have food for the day and somewhere to sleep. Keep in mind that being happy and feeling happy is not necessarily the same thing. A pill or drug that alters our state of mind may make us feel happy temporarily. However happiness, or wellbeing, thus seem to have completely opposite aspects. The irresponsible getting away from it all, and the other by having control over our lives and our health, with the support, safety and security from our loved ones. Happiness and wellbeing is never the absence of illness, the illusion of love or the lack of scary elements or events in our environment. Although almost totally innate, real wellbeing has to do with the real thing. Knowing who we are, having a purpose in life and being certain that we are getting wherever we want to go, regardless of age. The famous psychologist Martin Seligman describes

WELLBEING

it as having a pleasant, engaged or a meaningful life. Amazingly, even by just deciding to improve those aspect, we improve our lives. By concentrating on things we like and are good at doing. Life can be greatly improved by not brooding over things out of reach, or on the ailments of a mistreated body. A fanatic music fan may grumble that his expensive music equipment can´t do certain things instead of enjoying the fantastic music that it can reproduce.

In the futil hope of getting help and support, we often talk hours on end about how unwell or unhappy we feel, about illness we have, have had or fear having in the future. Happiness and wellbeing is not out there to be found. If you get more money than you need, a fancier car or a more beautiful wife or husband. It is in you and in that which you know. A good start is improving your health. Something can always be done.

BUSINESS MATTERS

BUSINESS MATTERS Advertising - Is it working for me? At the end of this month, one small business will deliver roughly 1,829,256,297 parcels, travelling 316,899,308 miles in one night, at an average speed of 1,800 miles per second, and he does NO advertising of his own but relies upon others to do it for him. Is his advertising working for him? You bet it is!!

And how much advertising of your business have you done in the last year? And is it working for you? You probably have no idea!! Each month a nice person from a local newspaper or magazine calls you on the phone & asks if you want to advertise in their publication. For reasons only known to you, you make your decision and then get back to doing what you were doing before the telephone rang. But do you ever do anything to measure if your current advertising choice has worked? • How many of your customers come to you and say that they saw your advert in newspaper or magazine? • How many times do you ask your customers how they came to hear about you? • How many times do you check the advert that you have paid for to see if it is correct? • If you did, you might notice that in October, your advert was still advertising your special Easter 2015 menu!! • How much have you spent this last year on advertising, and what return have you got on that spending? I recently read an article in a local newspaper, which was looking at attitudes of small business owners in the ‘Costa community’ It said that – “In the Costa (business) community there is an ‘I don’t need anyone to teach me how to run my business’. So, I ask you again – is your advertising working for you? Are you ‘Putting Your Business in Front of the Right People’ through your advertising? Merry Christmas!! Currency News With recent tragic events in Paris, investors became increasingly nervous of the potential ´ripple´ effect across the Eurozone & coupled with the lockdown in Brussels, Sterling looks set to maintain it´s recent gains to just short of 1.43. In particular, over 2 billion euros was wiped off the value of European tourism & leisure companies, coupled with lower than expected Eurozone growth figures (-0.3% for the bloc as a whole). Industry insiders are becoming ever more confident that by the end of 2016 we can expect to see sterling/ euro at the 1.50 range. Whilst not good for UK exporters, rates of around 1.43 and higher are great news for those of us bringing money into Spain, particularly those who rely on pensions, salaries, etc. and need to transfer funds on a regular basis. Getting back to our nemesis, Greece (!), it was noted that she has just failed to meet another bailout repayment & it´s creditors have yet again had to reluctantly agree to an extension of the deadline for additional funding. The country´s debt to GDP now stands at a staggering 180%. Surely a recapitalisation of Greek Banks is now inevitable if the economy is to survive? I have mentioned before the return of buyers to Spain and the increasing number of enquiries from wouldbe purchasers. Whilst this at present remains sporadic with regards to location, to give you some idea of the long-term potential impact on prices for wherever you live, La Cala de Mijas is now is quickly closing in on many parts of Marbella when it comes to property prices. I foresee this price increase spreading east over the next two to three years. For more information call Melanie Radford at Currencies Direct. See their advert under Currency Transfers.

Legal Matters

RUNNING A BUSINESS IN SPAIN

Those of you who run medium or small businesses in Spain will be hardworkers with initiative and drive but sometimes red tape can overwhelm you, particularly if you are not familiar with the procedures and regulations. At a recent Business forum in London run by the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain the figures for new UK based businesses setting up in Spain were very encouraging. If you have an established business or are thinking of opening a business in Spain it is important to get your billing system in order. Before issuing invoices or fee notes it is wise to check your contractual agreements or payment terms are clearly set out in your terms of business or on your invoices. On the basis that prevention is better than cure a consultation with a lawyer can help to ensure you are not left with unpaid bills owed to your company. However even the best regulated businesses can still occasionally have debtors and there is an accelerated procedure for dealing with these. With the original invoice or bill a demand letter will firstly be sent by your lawyer. If this remains unpaid the lawyer can commence a monetary claim by presenting the bill in court with a power of attorney issued by the company allowing them to act. If there is no defence to the claim then execution can be sought against assets. These assets can include property, bank accounts, cars etc. Where a defence is entered there has to be a hearing and this can increase costs as if the claim is for more than 2.000€ you also have to appoint a court procurator. However your business would normally be able to recover some of the legal costs if you are successful. This applies whether you have incorporated a Spanish limited company or are working for yourself and registered as self-employed or autonomo.

WEB WORLD Does Your Small Business REALLY need a Website? If you think your business is too small or your product / service is something that can’t be sold online, you might think you don’t need a website. In this ‘Information Age’, people expect every business to have a website and sooner or later, someone’s going to type your name or business into a search engine. If they can’t find you, they can’t hire you and they will go to the person they can find: your competitor. Five reasons why you need a website? 1) You´re open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 365 days a year so your chances of being found by new customers increases indefinitely. 2) It’s an affordable medium that doesn’t require a large investment and you can change and update the information as your business changes. 3) Showcase yourself and your work - whatever you do or represent, a website is a great way to show off your talents and products as well as keeping customers informed of your latest offers, promotions, news or events. 4) Increase your market reach - a website and online presence allows you to market your business online on a global scale. 5) Having a website fosters credibility and even if you get most of your business through networking and personal connections, customers still want to check out your website. People form their opinion about your website in milliseconds so make sure that yours makes a great first impression. A bad website is worse than no website, but both are bad for business. Having an online presence for your business is essential and remember, your website isn’t for you, it’s for your customers.

SPANISH CUISINE How much do you know about Spanish Cuisine, every month Tina will give you a question and answer then a receipe for that question. Question: What % of Olive Oil does Spain produce for the world. Olive oil comes in all different bottles, shades of colour, and flavours, all depending on the region from which it originates. Today we not only use Olive oil in its light, original or strong flavours but we add ingredients such as basil, chilli, garlic to give some definition to salads and dressings. Experiment yourself, add herbs or anything of your choice and leave to savour for 1 week before using. Its also good to give as a present, dressed in a fancy bottle and labelled. Answer. 44%

Dental Health Pregnancy Gingivitis

WELLBEING

The increase of prolactin and oestrogen during pregnancy makes some women more susceptible to dental caries and gingivitis problems. Although we cannot avoid the increase of these hormones, the onset of oral diseases during pregnancy can be prevented with a correct oral health and a regular visit to your dentist. During pregnancy there are large changes in women at all levels; in the physical aspect, chemical and psychological. This makes the oral cavity of pregnant women more susceptible to suffer from these conditions such as gingivitis and dental decays, especially after the 3rd month of pregnancy. The increase of these hormones cause changes in the structure of the mouth tissues, increasing the blood supply suffering from a greater inflammatory reaction against external irritants. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that appear red, swollen and sensitive with tendency to spontaneous bleeding or by small stimuli such as chewing or brushing your teeth. If this Gingivitis is left untreated, it may progress to periodontal disease affecting bone support, partial loss of bone and tooth loss risk. It is ideal to start pregnancy with healthy mouth, with no cavities, gingivitis or other problems since these diseases may affect not only the health of the mother, but also the child’s health. The mother should make regular visits to the dentist to detect and prevent any alteration to ensure optimal oral health, although some dental interventions can be done during pregnancy since there are certain drugs and anaesthetics that can be used, but treatments that not are urgencies should be postponed.

How to survive that hectic, happy holiday season? December is a strange month… Short days, long evenings and nights and colder days, even here in Spain! There´s lots of organizing to be done, which can be fun, but is sometimes overwhelming. How do we stay focused, grounded and truthful to ourselves, and at the same time still enjoy that jolly holiday feeling? 3 yogic tips and exercises: 1. Stay focused on what you really want and what is really important. Sit down comfortably and join strong fists together in Brahma Mudra in front of your belly. This mudra (hand posture) improves concentration. Close your eyes and breathe slowly. 2. Yoga helps you to ground, to stay present, and enjoy the moment. Don´t let the craziness of others mess with your peace of mind. Virabhadrasana II: Step your right foot far back, bringing the back heel down to the floor (45 degrees). Bend the left leg so the knee is above the ankle, and open the arms in line with the shoulders. Look to the front over the left hand .Hold for a couple of minutes and root down through the feet. Don´t forget to repeat on the other side! 3. Breathe!! Whenever you feel overwhelmed, just take a few deep breaths through the nose. Try to feel grateful for whatever happens, and smile…because like everything else in life: this moment will also pass!
