BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION
Freestanding Garden Walls: With freestanding garden walls,
more emphasis can be put on the look and enhancement of the garden. Using locally sourced natural stone can help create a look of distinction to dress and enhance, and may also be a requirement of local building regulations. Freestanding walls allow for greater flexibility in terms of material choice and aesthetic outcome and are often less expensive than retaining walls (where strength is the main concern). However, a common assumption that is made is that freestanding walls should be low cost, as they don’t need to be as strong. To save on costs, builders often create freestanding walls with footings that are not robust enough, leading to wall movement due to subsidence or heave. They neglect to take into account the land structure, making the footings superficial at best. This should be a major concern, even more so if your house is built in an area where the soil type is clay. In the winter the soil will expand as it takes on water and in the dry summer months the soil will contract. This constant movement of the subsoil will result in walls losing their integrity, cracks forming and in time the wall collapsing. At LT Construction, we focus equally on the structural specification as well as the aesthetic concerns of freestanding walls. In doing so, we consider any such projects as major works in their own right, and will design and build walls which are very attractive and able to stand the test of time. Please bear in mind that a building license would be required for any walling. We at LT Construction would apply and see you through this often-frustrating process. THIS MONTHS COCKTAIL The Agave Kiss
Tequila isn’t mixed into creamy drinks too often, but when it is, it’s a dream. This one happens to be ultra-creamy, complete with chocolate and raspberry liqueurs and double cream, shaken to a slurry mix. The original recipe here calls for silver, or white tequila
Ingredients: • 2 ounce Jose Cuervo Tequila Silver • 1 ounce white creme de cacao • 1 ounce double cream • 1/2 ounce Chambord • White chocolate flakes for rimming • Fresh raspberries for garnish Preparation: 1. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. 2. Shake for 15 seconds. 3. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass rimmed with white chocolate, add a spear of fresh raspberries, and serve. recipe BY tINA Mediterranean Salmon & Vegetables
SAY IT WITH A KISS - Keep It Simple, Strong In last month’s article ‘Is your current advertising doing a good enough job?’ It asked us what are we all spending on our current advertising, is it working & should we change our strategy?
Salmon Pieces (Steaks) Pesto 1 tblsp per piece Lemon 1/2 per 2 pieces Tomato Slices Olive Oil, Salt and Pepper Vegetables of the sason cut into appropriate size according to cooking requirements.
Why did we choose to be a Directory as opposed to your regular give away freebie press? First we analysed the current marketplace & was sure that something clear, focussed & new was needed - a dedicated directory could be more successful than a handful of free ads; if managed well.
Put Salmon pieces into an oven proof dish, cover with pesto and squeeze lemon over.
In a recent survey by a Yellow Pages Association, it was highlighted that nearly 80% of respondents had used a printed yellow pages directory during the previous year. When including the online version it was 84%.
Put vegetables in a baking tray and sprinkle with oil, salt and pepper.
This shows that despite the buzz of all the latest social networks - there is still a strong argument for an easy to use printed directory.
Lay sliced tomator on top and leave to rest for approximately 20 minutes.
Cook vegetables for approximately 30 minutes at 180 degrees and Salmon approximately 20 minutes. Serve with pieces of lemon.
As a team of skilled expat business people, we then decided to take it further & offer that bit extra by giving advertising, promotions, and publicity via facebook & Twitter alongside a printed Directory. This gives you a full & multiple media approach - and as long as you can deliver at the end and keep them coming back - we should all be happy! As with all advertising you have to give it time - consistency in image & message to keep reminding people who you are & what you do it will pay off in the end.
Tina is happy to help with your cooking dilemmas and is also available for parties etc . She does cooking for holidaymakers and clients. CARNIVAL
Carnivaaaaaal!!!!!!!!!!! The first true celebrations since The Three Kings and it is only February....Carnival takes place every year all around Spain - around shrove Tuesday and in the week before the start of Lent. This year, because Easter (Semana Santa) is much later, the Carnival just about touches this month but carries on into March too. The Nerja carnival starts on Thursday 27th February at 9pm at the Nerja Cultural Centre until 2nd March - so four days of partying before the fasting period that many Christians still do for Lent. And it is a BIG party with fabulous parades and outrageous costumes. At the end, the Sunday, they strangely parade a huge sardine 'Entierro del Chanque' (with funeral procession for the burial of said sardine) through the town at 4.30pm in Plaza Espa単a and finishing with it at Calahonda Playa in a ball of flames and fireworks. You have to see it! The Carnival opening is. Friday at 7.30pm is the children's fancy dress competition held at Plaza de Espa単a (above the balc坦n parking by the town hall). On Saturday at 5pm The Grand Parade starts at Calles Jaen and Chaparil and ends at Plaza de Espa単a. The last day Sunday, at 11.30am with a Pets Fancy Dress competition. Malaga carnival lasts for days longer, and has been a tradition for many years, but, due to unemployment and famine disappeared completely by 1935. It was fifty years later when groups decided to get together and start up something again- centred around the Cervantes Theatre. Check your local tourist office for details of your nearest Carnival - Nerja has always been a major one in this area- but many other towns celebrate in their own way. Enjoy the start of many more fiestas!!! Welcome to Spain!! 30

Hidden Sugars Even if you don’t have a sweet tooth, you could well be eating far more sugar than you think. Sugar comes in many different guises and much of it could be hidden in your favourite foods. What is sugar? Sugar is a carbohydrate - there are two types of carbohydrates complex and simple. Complex carbohydrates provides a slower and more sustained release of energy which is good for the body, simple carbohydrates are fast releasing. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate!!!!. We need to keep our blood sugar levels balanced in order to maintain our energy levels and weight. Simple carbohydrates send a sudden burst of energy to the system, which requires a sudden burst of insulin to balance it. Later the body having expended the energy, very quickly feels it needs another “fix” and the cycle starts again. This is the “Blood-Sugar Merry-go-round” and for many it is not so merry! Diabetes is a major illness that is caused by an imbalance in our blood sugar levels. Sugars are found in both healthy and ‘unhealthy’ foods. Natural sugars are found in fruits and vegetables and in mother’s milk, the rest are found in manufactured foods. Almost all refined food contains sugar. The Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) for the average adult is 90g which includes all sugars. Of this, added sugar should make up just 50g, that’s the equivalent of 13 teaspoons of sugar a day. Manufacturers often add different kinds of sugars during the canning or packaging process, which adds more calories to the food without any nutritional value. Sugar can also be used as a preservative to extend shelf life. Below are Sugar found in some popular products by teaspoon Chocolate bar 8, Tomato soup 4, Small caramel Frappuccino with cream 11, small can coke 9. If an ingredient ends with ‘ose’ (glucose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, and maltose) – are all forms of sugar as are honey, agave, molasses and syrups like corn and rice syrup. 32 The DIRECTORY an easy to use, easy to find A-Z of businesses in your area and more!
The higher up the ingredients list on the packaging, the more sugar the product contains. •Low-fat and ‘diet’ foods often contain extra sugar to help improve their taste and palatability and to add bulk and texture in the place of fat •Savoury foods, like ready-made soups, pies, pasties, sauces, pickles probably contain added sugar •Cakes, biscuits, puddings, crisps, takeaway foods all contain sugar. •A can of soft drink, on average, contains the equivalent of seven teaspoons of sugar almost half your GDA. So what can we do to help ourselves? Try to prepare as much food yourself as you can, therefore knowing what you have added in the form of sugar, check the ingredients on packaging, sugars; less than 5g per 100g is low, more than 15g per 100g is high. Eat natural foods such as fruit and vegetables whilst they contain sugar, they also have fibre which helps in the elimination process therefore giving our digestive system a better chance of ‘doing its work’ therefore enabling us to stay healthier!

HERB OF THE MONTH
Drosera Rotundifolia: Commonly known as the sundews, comprise one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants.
This little insectivorous plant is found growing in muddy edges of ponds, bogs and rivers, where the soil is peaty. It is a small herbaceous, perennial, aquatic plant, with short and slender fibrous root, from which grow the leaves. These are remarkable for their covering of red glandular hairs, by which they are readily recognized, apart from their flowers which only open in the sunshine. Drosera species are protected by law in many European countries, such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, France, and Bulgaria. Sundews were used as medicinal herbs as early as the 12th century, when an Italian doctor from the School of Salerno, Matthaeus Platearius, described the plant as an herbal remedy for coughs under the name herba sole. It has been used commonly in cough preparations, especially recommended for dry coughs, bronchitis, whooping cough, asthma and “bronchial cramps”. A modern study has shown that Drosera exhibits antitussive properties. It relaxes the muscles of the respiratory tract, easing breathing and relieving wheezing and so is of great value in the treatment of various chest complaints. The flowering plant is antibacterial, antibiotic, antispasmodic, antitussive, demulcent, expectorant and hypoglycaemic. Today sundew is in most herbal remedies, in form from extracts or syrups, against coughs and hoarseness, also specially recommendable for teacher, singer or anybody who’s using their voice strongly.... TONE UP YOUR WOBBLY BITS
Sometimes running a business is like being a circus juggler on a trapeze. Only that as well as handling your performance, you’re also responsible for selling tickets. Being so busy, it can be tough to step back and look at the bigger picture or to view your company with an honest and critical eye. But being honest about how the company is running and understanding its strengths and flaws, is vital to being a success. Make sure you regularly review the key functions of your business to ensure that things are still going well before it’s too late to fix it. It is a big job so I break it down into smaller areas and use something like the following check list: 1. Customer satisfaction 2. Sales against targets 3. Costs and expenses 4. Profit and loss per product/service 5. Marketing and sales plan 6. Business action plan review I use this list to ensure that I check everything and I am putting effort into the right area. Sometimes it’s hard to see the wood for the trees and you could be working really hard to deliver a service or produce a product that actually when you look at the numbers doesn’t make you any money.
MEASURING YOUR PROGRESS
For each area that is important to the business I like to set up a list of tasks that need to be completed within a certain time period which I can track. I also set up some measures like KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) which help tell me if I’m meeting my targets or not and whether the business is healthy. Good KPIs can be very helpful in producing early warnings. For example, at the end of the month if you don’t have
enough money in the bank to pay your suppliers then you know you have trouble. I don’t want to get into that situation and have to firefight when I get there. I therefore work out what factors affect the money that is available to make those payments. In a simple example this comes from two things; 1) Sales made and 2) Payments from customers (payment terms). If I am just measuring sales made in a month then I may calculate that I have enough to pay a supplier and order a large amount of something, but what I am not taking into account is that one of my sales is for a customer that has long payment terms and the money won’t arrive until next month. Now, I am short at the end of the month even though I made enough sales. This is basic cash flow analysis, but setting up KPIs to show this can help show potential problems in advance and improve decision making.
LOVE YOUR CRITICS
One of my least favourite tasks used to be doing a customer service review. This is where we go out to our clients and ask them to tell us what they think we could improve. No one likes to hear criticism so it can often be easier not to ask. However, when looked at from another perspective; criticism and customer feedback is absolute gold dust. It’s really free market research. If your clients are willing to give you feedback then they are actually telling you what you need to do to have them stay or pay you more. This information should directly lead to more money in your bank. If you can action their feedback then you probably will get more clients or have the current ones pay you more or recommend you more. One of their suggestions might even lead to an idea for a new service or product that you Thoughts by Natalie Haigh hadn’t thought of. So whatever the feedback, Technology Strategist and Business always be willing to listen, because even Efficiency Expert a harsh criticism could be turned into a who splits her time between brilliant idea. Massage – the manipulation of the soft tissue of the body – has been used as a healing therapy for many thousands of years. The ancient cultures of Japan, Egypt, Rome and Arabia all considered massage to be calming, soothing and relaxing, and also very important as a healing therapy. Now, in the 21st century, there are many different kinds of massage therapies available, each of which offers specific benefits to the mind and body. Massage uses either the therapist’s hands or, in some cases, mechanical means, to manipulate the body’s soft tissue, especially the muscles. Benefits of massage: • Improve range of motion. • Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin • To help with depression and anxiety. • Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow • Exercise and stretch weak and tight muscles. • Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts. • Assist with shorter, easier labour for expectant mothers • Increase joint flexibility. • Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks. • Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation. • Reduce post surgery adhesions and swelling. • Reduce spasms and cramping. • Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles. • Release endorphins that work as the body’s natural painkiller. • Relieve migraine pain. Types of massage: Relaxing, Therapeutic, Remedial and Holistic Massage
Indian head massage
The aim of Indian head massage is to release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders.
Reflexology
A reflexology practitioner uses light pressure to massage each of the points in the toes, feet and ankles to release tension, remove energy blockages, disperse accumulations of calcium and uric acid, stimulate blood circulation and promote healing of both body and mind.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy massage combines the use of essential oils and therapeutic massage. Defined as an alternative treatment, your therapist will start by asking you a series of questions relating to your health, lifestyle and medical history. From this, they will be able to select which essential oil is most suited to you. As your massage begins, the oils start to work immediately. They quickly penetrate the skin and become absorbed into the bloodstream, loosening muscles and helping to release any suppressed tension you have.
Sports Massage
Sports massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.
Pregnancy Massage
Massage during pregnancy helps to reduce stress and promote relaxation; provides emotional support, relieves muscle spasms, cramps and general aches and pains; increases circulation and thus reduces the possibility of varicose veins and swelling in the feet and legs; helps with digestion and reduces the likelihood of stretch marks.
Swedish Massage
The skin’s natural functions will be stimulated improving the condition of the skin and the warmth created will help relax the body physically and mentally. Swedish body massage is the original massage technique involving a sequence of movements working superficially and deeper into the tissue layers.
Lymphatic drainage
Lymphatic drainage massage improves our health in various ways. It makes the body noticeably lighter, boosts energy and vitality, increases metabolism, immune function, sleep quality and work efficiency, reduces swelling and numbness of the limbs, stimulates blood circulation. The transformation of your body is achieved not by massaging a certain part of the body, but by stimulating the lymph flow and detoxification.

Be on your guard: One of The Directory readers wrote to us last month to let us know of a burglary that had taken place at her property just after Christmas.
This took place just 2 days after Christmas. Last Friday I came home from Malaga to find my home had been trashed and everything I owned of value had been taken. Not only the ‘normal’ things such as the laptop, camera, iPad, play station, Nintendo etc… but my jewellery, and even my children’s Christmas presents which was the most heartbreaking part. They even took my daughters dolls and drank a bottle of wine! This was between the Nerja and Frigiliana
