Dear Readers and Supporters So here we are again the last month of another year that has flown by. It has been a great year for The Directory and I have met some fantastic people during my travels around the Axarquia and surrounding area. ALARM SYSTEMS Protecting Your Home From Break-Ins A break-in always has a major impact on your and your family’s sense of safety and well-being. Help protect your home from break-ins with Home Security Tips from ¡PERFECT ALARM! S.L. Tip No. 9: Social networking

The DIRECTORY December 2016
Social networking has changed the way we interact with friends. With hundreds of millions of users online, these tools not only attract friends and family wanting to stay in touch, but they also attract people wanting to know about you for the wrong reasons. Be aware of the following security threats to help you to stay safe in particular during the holiday season. Don’t reveal your location. Avoid posting specific travel plans. Never post when, where, or how long you’ll be gone. Don’t share snaps of holidays out across social media channels until you’re home. Don’t disclose expensive items of jewellery or other valuables. Don’t show photos of the rooms in your house as this will detail your floor plan. Make sure all expensive items are removed from pictures in-home pictures before you post them in your social network. Never forget: Once information is posted online, it’s no longer private and can fall into the wrong hands. For more information or a free security demonstration, contact ¡Perfect Alarm! SL. Phone: 608 517 661 or http://perfect-alarm.webs.com/ E-mail: info@perfect-alarm.com
¡GIVE ME FIVE!
¡Membership Drive!
With the holiday season upon us, how about this for a stocking stuffer: a Give Me Five membership. What is a Give Me Five membership and how do you get it? I’m glad you asked. Traditionally fund-raising for animals rights has been about as much fun as losing a nose to syphilis. Or, like Christopher Marlowe, being stabbed in the eye. You might survive it though you may wish you hadn’t. However we are not asking for donations, we are selling memberships that will save you money and support local businesses. Our goal is to build a network of like-minded businesses, consumers and animal lovers that recognise Give Me Five as a project of Mutual Aid. And if we agree as a community that the lives of abandoned and/or abused animals are a common concern, then by purchasing a Give Me Five membership you will be helping us to alleviate and hopefully eliminate this awful scourge. So how does it work? As simple as: A) For a 50€ fee you will become a Give Me Five member and immediately begin receiving a 5% discount on all dental treatment at DentaDanés for the next six months. You’ll also begin receiving a 5% discount (sometimes more) at a wide variety of businesses here in our little neck on the Med. For example your card will be honored at furniture shops like Salablanca and Muebles Piramides Puerto, at English food shops in Torrox Coast and Nerja, at several vet clinics and kennels, at hair salons and photography studios and much more. B) All businesses that partner with Give Me Five will receive FREE standard size advertising space in our quarterly Discount Booklet as well as promotion on our Facebook page (givemefiveanimalcharityspain) and upcoming website. C) So how does this help animals? Your membership fee of 50€ goes directly to the various rescue groups to help cover the costs of vet bills, food, kenneling, etc. Their incredible work deserves not just financial support but if possible some of your time as well.
To sum it up: the more businesses that partner with us, the more your membership saves you money and the more members we have the more money we can provide to the animal rescue groups. !Happy Holidays! Scott Houston 603 416 632

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS) Legal Consultations At De Cotta Law we believe that the preliminary legal consultation is the most important moment in building the framework for success with your legal matter. This is when the initial understanding of your need, dispute or conflict must be fully understood to assure you of the best possible advice. Documentation is often the key to a proper and valuable consultation, and in some cases we prefer to study the documents after this initial consultation and provide a reasoned opinion in writing after the meeting. For example, you may have a dispute with a neighbour about the boundaries of your land. In some of these cases the catastral or rateable area from the Catastro might be substantially different from the surface area of the plot as described in your deeds. Therefore, the lawyer will need to review both documents and any local planning rules to see if the situation can be resolved. In monetary and debt claims we also need to review the paperwork. Unfortunately, in some cases pursing a debt can be costly and not effective if the debtor has no funds or assets in Spain. We act for a number of English law firms and Trustees in bankruptcy and always advise commencing a matter with a property and company search, as it is not advisable to commence a debt action against a “man of strawâ€?. The same will apply to your small business debt or a personal debt where the person or company who owes the money has no capacity to repay. A comprehensive consultation is essential if you are to be successful and often a mediated settlement can be reached without the need to take a matter to court. For example, a neighbour dispute can be settled with the parties agreeing to voluntarily sign new deeds that accurately reflect their ownership. Also a debtor can agree staged payments, perhaps with a charge against property that prevents costly litigation for both parties. Consultations can be in person or in writing. For more information, contact us on info@ decottalaw.net or telephone 952 527014 to arrange a meeting at any one of our offices in Mijas-Costa, Nerja or CoĂn. 22

The best communication device
Thirty years ago, if we wanted to get in contact with each other on the go, we had to use a phone booth or carry around a device weighing 2 pounds. Today that weight has been reduced to 0.2 pounds, we have no trouble keeping it with us at all times, and phone booths are found only in museums. Mobile phones are our most appreciated gadgets I think you have noticed that mobile phones are occupying more and more of our time, but what do we really use them for? They have become indispensible and it is not uncommon to see people sitting around a table fidgeting their phones, communicating something with someone at some other place instead of paying attention to the people at the table. My colleague told me that she saw an old couple chatting at a coffee shop table. They were actually chatting with each other. But which device is really the best in order to make sure we stay tuned to our times? How much money do we need to spend in order to get the latest and best killer phone bundled with awesome killer apps. What model do we pick to demonstrate that we are design aware. Since the days of smoke signals, a large number of devices have been developed to facilitate communication over a distance. Isn’t it time that we look a bit closer at how we are communicating and the basis of our communication. Do we evolve as a species at the same rate as our technology evolves? In the technological stone age, we had teleprinters. They were complicated and were mainly used to communicate important data. The fax machines served a similar need until someone found out that they could be contaminated with promotional ads. Mobile phones appeared and were used to notify late arrivals and to send short messages. Phone call charges were high, prohibiting prolific conversations and messaging. Then came emails, which are still used, but overburdened with undesired mails and communication abuse. Phone charges came down and chatting soared to a point where it can be difficult to put away the phone even for a minute. Are we becoming automatons and remote-ons. Is it really necessary to see and hear our family, friends and connections 24 hours a day.? A phones is not the ultimate communication devices it seems to be As human beings we have a desire to do the things that are important to us, and to some degree that which is important to people around us. The most important thing in achieving that is COMMUNICATION. That is how we know what people want from us and how we tell what we need from them. As it has been said, “no man, (or woman), is an island. We need to belong. We need to be seen and heard and be respected. In order to be alive we need to feel important to someone or something. To feel that our lives matter. No matter how much we need and want this, no amount of chatting, spectacular selfies or spectacular stories told on Facebook will ever fill that totally different level of communication quality is needed in order to achieve this. 42 gap. The ADIRECTORY December 2016
WELLBEING
What is often missing is real people talking to real people in a way which is heard above the technological background noise. The ultimate communication device is therefore the human body It doesn’t really matter which type of phone you have. Without a body the phone, any phone, serves no purpose. Think of it for a second, what is the purpose of having bodies, if not to communicate with them, and I don’t just mean talking. All your life you have been communicating with the world, using your body. Do you also take care of your body as the excellent and important communication device it is? Even if fear of death may be fear of not being able to communicate more, we often do not see the importance of communicating real values or taking care of our bodies enough to be able to communicate better and more. Health is corporal, mental/ emotional and social. You can balance all three. The gadgets can’t. Something can always be done, and now you know that it is you that has to be doing it. Yogi ADVENTURE restaurant, lovingly brought it back to life in 1998. We didn’t eat there, but saw droves of diners tuck into his locally sourced food with gusto.
I’ve been to Acebuchal twice over the last few months. I planned to check out a few hikes, but decided the Fabrica de la Luz walk is probably the most accessible. I tried a tougher scramble, which ascends sharply as you come out of the village, but was told in no uncertain terms by my walking buddy to abort the mission after ten minutes climbing. Oh well… I grabbed a consolatory handful of rosemary and thyme on the way down. A large wooden sign points right towards Acebuchal on the Frigiliana – Torrox road, about 1km after driving up the hill out of Frigiliana. The single-track road becomes bumpy, so careful if you’re in a rental car. Or park up if the road gets too bad.
The walk is a simple there and back. Park by the church past the restaurant, then follow the track for about 3km. The views are incredible. You can see the Mediterranean behind Nerja’s snaggletooth high rises. Then you are surrounded by pine-forested mountains with inviting trails leading higher, should your walking companion allow ;) Fabrica de la Luz isn’t so inspiring – in the summer perhaps, when you can cool off in the mountain streams, use the public barbecues and camp on request. The sign isn’t obvious, but you’ll know you’re there when you reach a road forking right. The place also looks perfect for mountain biking. We spotted MTBers on several tracks around the village. Awesome. Just, er, need to fix my brakes first…
The village nestles in a quiet valley flanked by the Sierra Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountains. It’s known as the Lost Village because the Guardia Civil forced villagers to abandon in 1948 for harbouring guerrillas after the Civil War. Local hero Antonio, who runs the village 46

Currency News Need to make overseas transfers this Christmas? Find out how to make the most of your money.
Whether you’re a Christmas shopping lover or are planning a family get-together for the festive season, you’ll most likely spend some extra money during this time of the year… and it could quickly turn out to be more costly than expected if you were to choose the wrong time or service to transfer your funds to or from abroad.
The impact of currency market movements
Recent upheavals on the global political and economic scenes have strongly impacted the currency markets, incurring some sharp variations between Sterling and other major global currencies. Those wanting to send funds back to the UK from the EU of late will have benefitted greatly from a weakening of the pound versus the euro, but those in a reverse situation will have been far less fortunate.
Options you should consider
When looking specifically at transferring extra funds between Spain and the UK, numerous options are to be considered. For example, if you already make regular transfers, you could potentially benefit from a favourable fixed exchange rate and therefore you might think about increasing the amount you send each month for a certain period to gradually cover any sum you require by a specific date. Alternatively, one-off transfers might be more suitable to match your needs; currency transfer specialists offer a wide range of services which will give you great flexibility around the time and rate at which you would like to transfer. The key to ensuring that you get the best possible deal when transferring your funds at Christmas, just like any other time of the year, is to speak with a currency specialist like Currencies Direct. For more information please contact Melanie Radford at Currencies Direct. (see details page 14) 48 The DIRECTORY December 2016
GARDENING TIPS How to Care for Poinsettias
Poinsettias bring a splash of festive red and green to a table or windowsill at the holidays. With proper care, you can enjoy these beautiful plants for weeks. Bright and colorful, poinsettias are nearly synonymous with the Christmas season. They provide you with a wealth of opportunities for holiday decorating.
Find the Ideal Spot
To keep them looking good, give poinsettias a sunny, south-facing windowsill or bright filtered light. Don’t press them close to a cold windowpane however, because this can damage the leaves. Keep them at about 68 degrees F during the day, and cooler at night, to prolong the display.
Watering and Feeding
Poinsettias should be watered regularly and kept evenly moist. Never let plants sit in water; always empty their saucers or planters shortly after watering.
Getting Poinsettias to Bloom Again
With proper poinsettia care after Christmas, you can get a plant to perform again. Water it until mid-spring, then let it dry out and allow the stems to shrivel. Keep it cool. At the end of spring, cut all growth to a couple of inches above the soil and repot it in new soil. Water well and keep it warm, feeding it with houseplant fertilizer when new growth appears. A month later, move the plant outside to a shady location, pinching out the growing tips in midsummer, before returning it indoors. Give it a sunny spot, watering and feeding regularly; then from mid-autumn, keep the plant in total darkness between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. It will then re-flower and produce colorful bracts.
Top Tip: Leaf Drop
It’s common for a few poinsettia leaves to turn yellow and drop off when you first bring them home. Don’t be alarmed — the plant is just reacting to its new living conditions. Tips are provided by Maria Lavao at Vivero Garden Centre El Algarrobo A356 Viñuela Tel: 615 512 423 See her main advert under GARDENING.
A Little Bit of Nerdy Humour in the Office
Stuffed peppers.
As a family business, my mother and I share an office. I was sitting at my desk this morning and all I could hear was my mother chuckling away at her desk. I asked her what she was laughing at: she and my dad, from his office, were sending each other nerdy jokes on Skype.
Pimientos Rellenos
The Spanish love stuffing things and one of the mot popular is peppers stuffed with salted cod. They use other things such as rice, potato, meat but generally a Pimientos relleno tapa will be with fish. Cut the tops off the peppers and remove the core (seeds etc) and give them a wash and turn over on paper towels to dry. Dice the onion, scallions and tomato into same size pieces. Then finely chop the parsley, thyme and scotch bonnet pepper. Grate the cheese and set aside. You’ll need to precook the rice in salted water.. I used long grain parboiled brown rice. Use any fish and mix all together, stuff peppers and grill. Salt and pepper to taste

Some of these were completely lost on me, because I’m not really as technologically advanced as they are, but I got some of them and thought they were pretty creative.
My mum, being a designer and front end developer, has a vast knowledge of CSS. One of her favourites (which she proceeded to later post on her Twitter because she thought it was that good), was: #wife { right: 100%; margin: 0; }
Mum made more CSS jokes, Dad made binary and nerdier jokes, and I sat there thinking of marketing jokes… I got absolutely nowhere. The point is, no matter how hard you work, don’t forget to take a few moments for yourself and enjoy the little things that make you laugh and smile. This month’s article marks my full year writing for The Directory, so I’d like to say a very big thank you to Michelle for running this magazine and who, ultimately, I have found a lovely friend in.

The DIRECTORY December 2016
There are many apartments available throughout the city, many central the old town with prices ranging from 50 euros upwards a night in an apartment for up to 4 adults. Tips about travelling to Malaga city at this time of year......... Travel by public transport, either by train or bus. Most buses will take you to the main bus station, and the old town is approx. 10 minute walk, however if you check with your local bus service some companies stop by the big wheel beside the harbour which is closer. Car parking in the city is limited and can be expensive (approx. 25 euros for 24 hours) Eating out..... There is an abundance of beautiful tapas bars and restaurants to choose from within the city. Do not be afraid to walk down a cobbled side street, these are usually where the best tapas bars are located. When you are walking around and you come across the Roman Theatre, I suggest you stop and enjoy a glass of wine at Bodega-bar El Pimpi, it is Malaga’s most famous wine bar. In this little square there are also a wide selection of different gastro bars with some beautiful menus. On the Marina side, you also have some funky little bars and a wide selection of restaurants, my personal favourite is ‘Amigos’ which is located at the far end of the pier. If you have a party where some want Mexican and some want Indian food......this is a must visit restaurant! You have both within one restaurant. Next door is Saloniki, which is Greek and Gaucho Grill which is an Argentinian Steak house, all owned by the same people. Beautiful location and very friendly staff. OUT AND ABOUT
Malaga A brief history of Malaga Like other towns and villages in the province, Malaga city’s origins go back to Phoenician times and evidence of human settlements can be dated back to then, when the city was known as ‘Malaca’ and was already an important trading port.
Later evidence of the Romans in Malaga can be seen through the Roman amphitheatre, which sits just below the Alcazaba. The theatre was discovered in 1951, when refurbishments to the old cultural centre took place. As work progressed, workers unearthed what was originally believed to be an old city gate. As excavations continued, they realised they were on the site of a Roman outdoor theatre. The cultural centre was demolished and the theatre was left open as a historical artefact for all to see. The origins of the Moorish Alcazaba, which stands proudly over the east of the city, are also, in fact Phoenician, but more of the castle’s history is known from the long Arabic reign of Al-Andalus, from 711 until the Catholic Kings captured the city in 1487. The Gibalfaro, Malaga’s other, more hidden, Moorish castle was built to defend the city against Isabel and Fernando, but it proved not to be strong enough and Malaga was one of the last cities to fall to the Catholics. Malaga’s cathedral, known as ‘La Manquita,’ as it only has one tower, was converted from a Mosque into the Christian place of worship as it is seen today. Guided tours are available. 56 AND OUT TheABOUT DIRECTORY Malaga December 2016
During the Civil War, Malaga was largely Republican and many religious places and iconography were destroyed. Yet, perhaps the most well-documented event during the war was the Desbandá, when the eventual arrival of Italian and German forces supporting Franco led to 100s of 1000s of Malagueños fleeing the city along the Almeria road (now known as the N340) in an attempt to escape the aerial bombardments signalling the capture of the city by Franco’s fascists. Many were killed in their attempt, resulting in perhaps the largest massacre during the war. In modern times, the city has always retained a very Spanish feel, compared with the impact of foreign influence in the province’s coastal towns. Apart from the occasional ‘Irish pub’ you would be hard pushed to find bars selling fish and chips and full English breakfasts in the centre.
Malaga had been overlooked by holidaymakers to the Costa del Sol for years, but huge investment from local, regional and national government has led to international newspapers such as the UK’s Times, Guardian and Telegraph as well as the New York Times, rating the capital of the Costa del Sol as the number one city to visit, citing its excellent museums, shopping, gastronomy and of course climate. Wine and coffee With the increasingly cosmopolitan nature of this grand European city, however, Malaga does lay claim to a couple of multinational coffee chains, which have been met with mixed reactions as Malagueños are fiercely proud of their unique coffee tradition. In bars like Café Madrid, near Plaza de la Constitución,
old posters help you to order just the right amount of caffeine in your cup in the traditional Malagueño way; from a ’manchada,’ to ‘solo’. While on the subject of Malaga drinking institutions, Bodega Bar el Pimpi on Calle Granada has been serving Malaga’s famous sweet wines and jamón serrano, since 1971 and has seen the likes of Barak Obama, Tony Blair and Sean Connery pass through its doors. As well as photos of its famous visitors, old Feria posters, from as early as the late 1800’s also provide a glimpse of the fascinating history one of Spain’s biggest traditions. Along the Alameda Principal another traditional sweet wine ‘drinkery’ is La Antigua Casa de La Guardia, where waiters serve a variety of different local wines straight from the barrel and keep

city centre is packed, while in the evening at late into the night, the party continues in the Feria ground, to the north west of the city. A sweet white wine called Cartojal is commonly drunk during Feria.
Fairs and festivals Christmas is the perfect time to visit Malaga; the City Hall famously spends millions of euros on its Christmas decorations, often second only to Barcelona in terms of investment. The city is always lit up by a stunning light display running the length of both Calle Larios and the Paseo del Parque, which turns into the Alameda Principal at the bottom of Larios. At the top of Larios is Plaza de la Constitución, where a modern take on the traditional Christmas tree can be found. The Spanish traditionally exchange presents on 6 January, which celebrates the arrival of the three Wise Men to the baby Jesus’s stable with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. On 5 January towns and cities throughout Spain organise ‘cabalgatas,’ or parades, of the Wise Men and Malaga is no exception. Turn your brolly inside out, like the Spanish, to catch sweets as they are thrown from the floats as the pass by. Semana Santa, or Holy Week, the week leading up to and including Easter weekend, is possibly Malaga’s biggest, most symbolic and impressive festival. ‘Tronos,’ or enormous floats, bearing larger-than-life figures of the Virgin Mary and Christ are paraded around the streets of Malaga, day and night, to the sound of trumpets and drums. Malaga’s annual Feria takes place around 15-19 August when during the day the 58

Famous people and museums Malaga’s most famous sons are, without doubt, the painter Pablo Picasso, who was born in 1881 in a house on the recently refurbished Plaza de la Merced. The other is actor Antonio Banderas, who retains close links to the city and comes back to join in Semana Santa. Although Picasso only spent his first 10 years in Malaga, the city has cashed in on this connection by turning the house where he was born into a small museum and foundation on the artist’s name. In nearby Calle San Agustín, the Picasso museum houses a number of his works. The Thyssen Museum opened in 2011 OUT AND ABOUT Malaga
thanks to a donation from the private collection of Baroness Thyssen, a member of the Spanish royal family. This, it could be argued, acted as a catalyst, not only to the opening up of a number of arty boutiques
with panoramic views of the city and Mediterranean. A number of other hotels in the city offer roof terraces, as does the gourmet shop and bar at the top of department store, El Corte Inglés. Transport connections Malaga has excellent transport connections, as well as having one of Spain’s biggest and busiest airports, it also has the modern María Zambrana train station, connecting the south of Spain with cities including Madrid, Seville, Barcelona and other destinations in Andalucía by the high-speed AVE train. There are plans to extend the line to Granada. Check www.renfe.com for timetables and prices as well as other routes.
in the streets around the museum, but also the opening up of number of other museums and art galleries, including the Pompidou Centre, or the colourful cube, on the new and trendy Muelle Uno. Other museums include the Centro de Artes Contemporaneos (CAC), which has driven the growth of a new area in Malaga, known as SOHO, just to the west of Plaza Marina and a great place to look for bike and segway tours of the city. The tourist information centre should be able to provide you with a map of the street art in the area. SOHO has led to the opening of a new hotel, Room Mate Valeria, one of Malaga’s trendiest spots, offering a spectacular roof terrace bar
The well-served bus station, located next to the train station, also connects Malaga to other Spanish towns and cities and even other countries. This is one of the drop-off points for buses to and from towns in the Axarquía. The other is the bus stop opposite the port. For further information on tickets and times visit www.alsa.es. There are plenty of car parks in Malaga city centre. Street parking is not widely available and most comes under the SARE or ‘blue zone’ pay and display areas. For more information about Malaga, other museums, information on those mentioned in this article and the many things to see and do there, visit: www.malagaturismo.com. The tourist Information office can be found on Plaza de la Marina, near the port. Written by Jennie Rhodes 59
