LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD A world bank of peace and love, a Nomad history as a gift to the world! It’s only seventeen kilometers between Spain and the ferry I currently am on, in Tanger Med, Morocco. One of the many reasons Morocco and Andalucia are so similar to me. There should really be a bridge that we could all run across between our two gorgeous countries. Again, Morocco has touched me deep within. I remember especially a conversation I had with a taxi driver in Rabat. Only 30 seconds into the ride, he said - welcome to Morocco, this is your country. My first reflection was that we say welcome to a lot of people, newcomers in our country, but do we really say this is your home? This is really the essence of what we are trying to do in the Sahara with Vilostrada - to remind ourselves, you, and the rest of the world that the world belongs to all of us. Just like the Nomads “Tanmirt”, our land, the Sahara, it all belongs to us. I am so looking forward to taking you with me next year to the Sahara, together with my children Lucas and Maj, and our dogs on our Tanmirt Expedition - Education for Life. We aim to give back to the Nomads with education such as mutual language, reading, writing, counting. These skills they need to be able stay exactly where they want to be, in the Sahara. And for all of you, for all of us, for all the world, we will create a world bank of Nomad memories stories, videos and photos never to be lost, for us to always have.

By Christmas 2018, there will be a book and a first documentary out. Our whole global team alongside with Brahim Elaabdouli, Lahcen Elfadmi and our nomad families will work really hard to bring you the stories of a life in peace in the Moroccan Sahara. I hope you carry the peace within just like I do. Merry Christmas!
Sahara is the world I want to live in. She guides how I want to live my life. No doors, simply harmony together. Currency News Dovish BoE sinks pound, impressive data supports euro
November so far has been a bit of a struggle for Sterling, starting with the Bank of England’s (BoE) rate decision which prompted significant losses for the currency at the start of the month. Confidence in the pound in November has also been rattled by political developments in the UK, with investors fearing that the instability of the UK government may hamper Brexit negotiations. Meanwhile, the euro has been lifted over the past few weeks by a run of upbeat data from across the Eurozone, with the bloc looking to have capped off a of year impressive growth with a strong fourth quarter. The last four weeks has seen the GBP/EUR exchange rate trade between €1.1446 and €1.1099, with the pairing averaging at €1.12 by the middle of November. In the meantime EUR/GBP has ranged from a low of £0.8736, ahead of the BoE rate decision, to a high of £0.9009 on the back of some impressive EU data.
What’s been happening?
After rising in the second half of October, the start of November brought a considerable drop in the pound despite the BoE delivering its first interest rate rise in over a decade. Sterling fell over 1% as markets were dismayed by hints that this would be a ‘one and done’ kind of deal rather than the start of a new cycle of monetary tightening. Further adding to the pound’s woes was a growing sense of political uncertainty in the UK after Prime Minister Theresa May was forced to shuffle her cabinet multiple times after two of her top ministers were hit by unrelated scandals. GBP/EUR was further unsettled by reports that a sizeable number of Conservative MP’s were plotting a possible leadership challenge against the PM, with investors fearing that Brexit negotiations would 12
The DIRECTORY December 2017
be further complicated by the political instability in the UK. The Eurozone economy, meanwhile, appears to be booming, with Germany’s growth surging to 0.8% in the third quarter and helping to bolster the appeal of the euro.
What do you need to look out for?
The pound could see further losses in the coming weeks as Brexit negotiations are unlikely to be completed before the next EU Summit on December 14th. This could scupper any chances for trade talks to begin by the end of the year and likely dent Sterling sentiment. Meanwhile, the euro may continue to strengthen over the next couple of weeks if the positive trend in Eurozone data continues. However, the single currency’s gains could be undermined somewhat by the European Central Bank’s (ECB) stance that loose monetary policy would still be needed for the foreseeable future. The euro may also be suppressed by the strength of the US dollar, which is likely to pick up in anticipation of a rate hike from the Federal Reserve next month. At Currencies Direct we’re here to talk currency whenever you need us, so get in touch if you want to know more about the latest news or how it could impact your currency transfers. 10 ways to bring christmas cheer into You might well smile smugly into your glass of Spanish wine or cava as you contemplate how lucky you are to be soaking up the Axarquia sunshine this Christmas. Yet you will find the Spanish tend to make less of Christmas than we do. No problem, here are ten great ways to bring fabulous festive cheer right into your Spanish home this Christmas…
1. The table
So you’ve organised a sensational Christmas feast with all the trimmings for your family and friends to devour in minutes, but what about the table? Time to impress still further with a beautifully decorated table, perhaps one that echoes the other festive styles and colours in your home. As with all decorations, it’s a good idea to choose a variety of sizes and textures to add interest. From traditional red, green and gold to more contemporary crisp white and silver combinations, there are endless options to choose from.
2. Wreaths Instead of our traditional holly, you will find beautiful Spanish alternatives growing wild near your home which are sure to intrigue your nonSpanish guests. Fragrant pine branches complete with cones, red-berried mistletoe, olive and juniper are all perfect for creating your own wreath 20
or flower arrangements – add a little silver or white spray for festive pizazz. If arts and crafts aren’t your thing, you’ll often find lovely ready-made ones at garden centres.
3. The tree When it comes to tree adornment, home designers Elle Décor err towards elegant white this year. Seek out small, large and giant baubles, reindeer, polar bears, Santas or

anything else that’s white and takes your fancy – they’ll look striking against a dark green tree. If you’re set on a real tree, you can sometimes buy real ones at petrol stations and garden centres, but here in Spain they aren’t as readily available as artificial trees.
4. Christmassy scents
Those sublime, spicy scents – sumptuous apple, clove, cinnamon, pine and orange aromas of Christmas – form part of many a

childhood memory. Enjoy them in festive candles or on wreathes and table decorations. If you don’t have the gorgeous scent of pine at home on a real Christmas tree, why not pick some small pine branches and add them to your table and other decorations?
d GARDEN
5. The garden At night, get the neighbours talking with an Eonant snowflake laser light or similar that projects a flurry of flakes across your home’s façade. LED fairy-lit pine trees or reindeers can be equally sensational. And don’t forget the red-leafed Poinsettias so popular here at Christmas. They are happy inside and outside, perhaps planted along a pathway, in pots at the front door or brightening up a balcony.
6. Exterior decorations With December weather often being so good in Spain, exterior Christmas decorations are all the more important. From stunning wreaths and much-loved Spanish nativity scenes to giant model snowmen or reindeer, it’s important that outdoor decorations really make a statement. An outside table will also need decorating – with perhaps a large, decorated candle or a winter berry 21
9. The fireplace What could be cosier than a living room fireplace draped with an evergreen garland along the mantelpiece? Add your favourite baubles, stars or Christmas stockings and you will have a festive focal point for the family to gather around. Safely placed candles are gorgeously Christmassy and can glow in the fireplace when not in use. centrepiece - that way there’ll be no missing out on festive cheer.
7. Christmas stockings Just because Christmas stockings and Santa going down the chimney aren’t traditional in Spain, it doesn’t mean that the kids and kids at heart should go without. They are probably best brought over from the UK but should you find yourself stockingless in Spain, the shops seem to supply them more and more each year. Take your pick as at least Christmas stockings won’t have you falling victim to fashion!
the house’s decorations, festively festooned banisters not only tie the area in with the rest of the house, they are wonderfully welcoming near the front door. Hang ribbons and baubles, bows, decorated pine branches or wreaths - you could even add twinkling fairy lights to complete that Christmassy look.
10. A word on tinsel Suffice it to say that tinsel is now a “no-no” so steer clear of it; that is, if you are intent on keeping up with Christmas trends. But if you really can’t contemplate Christmas without the gaudy glitter, try sticking to one colour only and you might just get away with it!

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS)
Family Law Family law is a wide field and there are many solutions both in the courts and as private agreements. Advice taken early as a precaution can be very helpful. When a conflict can only be resolved in court, it is equally important to have the support of a lawyer who manages your case and helps to explain the procedure whilst continuing to seek a negotiated settlement. At De Cotta Law we have a strong background in dealing with a wide range of family cases. As well as dealing with Separation and Divorce we can also advise and represent you in financial claims on divorce; seeking permission to change your residence with your children after divorce or separation; division of assets; co-habitation rights; claiming pensions; pre-marital agreements; adoption; incapacity, and the execution of foreign Judgements. In many cases problems can be prevented by seeking advice. For example, a prenuptial agreement can prevent conflicts over finances on divorce or separation. We have also acted for a number of families where one of the parents wants to return to their country of origin or leave Spain. If you don´t have the written agreement of the other parent it can lead to a very stressful and expensive action to have the child returned under the Hague Convention. Our family law department has particular experience in dealing with international cases. It may be necessary to apply a foreign law or to challenge the jurisdiction where one of the parties could be disadvantaged. For a confidential consultation write to info@decottalaw.net, or call us. 25

OUT AND ABOUT
out and about in COMARES “Come and have a look” is how Comares’s logo, ‘Ven y asómate’ loosely translates. It is worth it. Well worth it. 360-degree panoramic views of the Axarquía and over towards the Montes de Málaga, 11 villages and the Mediterranean sea in the distance explain why one of the area’s highest villages calls itself ‘The Balcony of the Axarquía.’ At 735 metres above sea level, Comares can be seen on a clear day from VélezMálaga, which is 25 kilometres away. It sits atop a mountain to the north-west of the Axarquía’s main town and to the untrained eye (my Dad when he was here in mid-September) can look like snow (Dad: “Is that snow? Surely not! It’s far too hot.” Me: “No Dad, that’s Comares. We took you there when you came last year.” Dad: “Oh did you? You’ve taken me to so many villages I get them mixed up.”) ‘HIsn Comarix’ means in Arabic ‘Castle up high’ and that is where the town gets its name. There are the remains of a fortress, which formed part of three in the Axarquía during Muslim rule. They communicated with smoke and mirrors to warn each other of invasions. This effective method of communication was part of the reason that it took the Catholic King and Queen, Fernando and Isabel, so long to reach Granada from Malaga during the Spanish conquest. The DIRECTORY December 2017
The fortress, known locally as ‘La Tahoma,’ is situated in the same area as Comares’s serene cemetery and although it is known that beneath lie further remains of the town’s Muslim and possibly even Roman and Phoenician past, the law states that digging in an area where people have been buried within 50 years is not permitted; what may lie underground will remain there for many years to come! Examples of the old town wall are still in place around Comares, as are two gates – one at the entrance to the town on the road from Vélez-Málaga, which leads up to the Plaza Balcón de la Axarquía and the town hall and the other, La Puerta de Málaga, is situated to the north of the town. Comares’s shield can be seen on the wall of the town hall and it is worth taking a close look at the character with a chain around his neck at the bottom– it is in fact Boabdil, or Muhammad 7th of Granada – the last Nasrid King of Spain, whose capture was in part thanks to Don Diego Fernández de Córdoba, who in turn was given the title of Marquis of Comares by the Catholic Kings, for his role in Boabdil’s demise. After Comares surrendered in 1487, 30 Muslim families remained in the town and were baptised into the Catholic faith. The ceremony took place in the streets of Comares OUT AND ABOUT in COMARES

and Calle ‘del Perdón’ is a constant reminder of those events. Moving forward to the 21st Century, Comares is now a lively town and many foreigners have made it their home. Of a population of 1,300, 600 people are from other countries. The biggest foreign population is Brits, followed by German and French among others. The town celebrates its cultural diversity every September with a festival in which people prepare food from each of the 20 countries represented there. It is a popular destination for those seeking adventure sports, with hiking and mountain bike routes, climbing and the longest zip wire in Spain. Guided walking tours around the town and local church are also available via the town hall. Eight hamlets belong to Comares and many of them are home to rental properties, all 35

of which are recognised by Andalusía’s regional government, The Junta de Andalucía. Other important festivals in Comares include the celebration of the town’s Patron Saint – Hilary of Poitiers - in January, Easter Week, Saint Isidore of the Labourers in May, Verdiales (traditional Malaga folk music) in July and the town’s fair (feria) at the end of August. In December Comares puts on a spectacular ‘Belén Viviente’ or live Nativity, in which members of the public participate with actors to bring the story of Christmas to life. This year it will take place on 17th December at 5pm starting at the Puerta de Málaga followed by a Christmas concert at the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación church. Comares even has its own style of Verdiales ‘Estilo Comares’ and a statue of a man playing Verdiales music, along with a mural depicting the traditional dancing,
can be found on Plaza de los Verdiales; in the centre of the town. Another mural which shouldn’t be missed is the one by the town hall, which shows a map with key points of interest in Comares. In the same area are other information boards, briefly explaining some the of town’s history, gastronomy, festivals and walking routes. The Axarquía’s town halls are all promoting the various routes that take in local products such as muscatel raisins, wine and oil and Comares forms part of these. Too high up to cultivate mangoes and avocados, which have become the mainstay of the warmer coastal areas, Comares still produces the traditional olives, grapes and almonds which have been grown in the Axarquía for many centuries. For further information on what to do, where to eat, sleep, have a go on the zip wire and more, visit www.turismocomares. es. The website is in English and provides information and contact details of the town hall and companies that offer activities, accommodation and more. The town hall also has information and is open from Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm. Written by Jennie Rhodes

NURSES NOTES “ I think I’m having a Heart Attack....”
We have all seen the films where the hero is ripping open his shirt clutching his chest with a purple contorted grimace exclaiming loudly that he is having a “heart attack “.
Heart attack symptoms vary from one person to another. The most common signs of a heart attack are: • Chest pain: tightness, heaviness, pain or a burning feeling in your chest • Pain in arms, should,er neck, jaw, back or stomach: for some people, the pain or tightness is severe (sometimes described as “like an elephant sitting on my chest”), while other people just feel uncomfortable. Sometimes it can feel like experience ´flu type symptons which perhaps has been treated by taking paracetomol in anticipation that its just a cold. However • Sweating • Feeling light-headed (dizzy) • Become short of breath • Feeling nauseous or vomiting. Sometimes can also be symptoms. The classic signs are the ones that lead you to get help. It’s not advisable to drive yourself to the hospital/ambulatorio instead call for an ambulance. Diagnoses: Routinely bloods will be taken which will show a raised Troponin level. It is generally accepted that above 0.01 is indicative of a heart attack. This diagnostic test is only helpful within a few hours of the acute episode. Medication: In hospital the patient will be given injections to thin the blood and when they go home (between 3-7days) they will start on Sintron (or Warfarin in 42

the UK). The dosage is determined by the regular blood tests (done by the nurse with results immediately available and can range through from ¼ tablet upwards which will be followed at home on a printed sheet). There will often be statins (to reduce cholesterol) Advice: Healthy diet with oily fish, leafy green vegetables and oatmeal ... reduce your fat intake. Build up from gentle exercise to a more robust routine. Probably the hardest part of the rehab is the emotional strain and the feeling of vulnerability. Consider the first attack as the warning. From Snap Shot to Great Shot Getting Proper Exposure for Night Photography pt1 I love night photography it can be much more rewarding than photography during the day. Because everything looks different at night, you don’t need to go somewhere exotic to get great pictures. The main challenge when photographing at night is getting a proper exposure. The principles of exposure work the same way at night as during the day – you will just need a lot more time to allow light into your camera. It goes without saying that you will need a tripod to stabilize your camera, and a remote shutter release to keep from moving anything during the exposure. Make sure you are shooting in Manual mode. In Manual mode, you will set the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. This puts you in complete control over you camera. Manual mode only works for exposures up to 30 seconds. If you need a shutter speed that is longer than 30 seconds, the only option for getting a proper exposure is Bulb mode. Therefore, while you should generally shoot in Manual mode, you should also be comfortable with Bulb. In Bulb mode, the shutter stays open as long as you wish. 50
The DIRECTORY December 2017
When shooting at night, it is particularly important to make sure you are shooting in raw format. The Raw files coming out of most cameras are 14 bit files, whereas JPEGS are only 8 bit files. The more bits, the higher the range of available colours and the smoother the transitions between them. Choose proper settings •
•
Aperture: Open up your aperture more at night than you would during the day (i.e., use a lower f/number letting more light into the camera). Shutter speed: Whereas shutter speed might be the first exposure setting you worry about during the day, it should generally be the last one you think about at night. Since you will be shooting from a tripod, you can let the shutter stay open as long as you need.
Meter for the highlights Determining the proper exposure level can be tricky at night. Use spot metering and to expose for the highlights. Pt2 next month. Rob Bell Photography. Capturing a Moment in Time. www.robbell.photography

PUZZLE PAGE ANSWERS FROM NOVEMBER 2017 ISSUE 54 Sudoku
That if you are being pestered by wasps, by placing copper coins (1, 2 or 5 cents) around the table the insects will no longer bother you! There is something that wasps simply don’t like about copper and by popping a coin on each corner of your table you will be able to enjoy a wasp-free meal! Michelle and I are were left open-mouthed by the simplicity of this on our recent trip to Comares, where we got chatting to the lovely Julieta, from Bar La Plaza, after she showed us this simple trick! She also told us how to ward off flies by cutting a lemon in half and sticking cloves in the two halves. I have yet to try that one but having seen the effectiveness of the coin trick I genuinely believe it will work! Julieta says that these simple and cheap methods are used all the time in her native Colombia and she has been impressing customers for years since she came to Comares. She also told us that to get rid of cockroaches we needed to make some peculiar sounding concoction involving pineapple and some sort of powder for “men’s smelly feet” which I haven’t looked into. Answers on a postcard to The Directory if anyone has the answer please! On a slightly different note…did you know that Comares is home to the parents of Antonio Ponce, the recently crowned world lightweight kickboxing champion? 26-year-old Antonio, who is originally from Córdoba, happened to be in the town when we went and proudly showed us his belt and title. It’s amazing who we come across on our trips…the day started off with Julieta and her insect repellents, we were given a guided tour of the town by Deputy Mayor, Manuel Robles Ruíz, met Antonio and his proud parents on the way and finished off with a drink in the bar with the Mayor, also called Manuel Robles (Robles)! 59
