Dear Readers and Supporters, We are out of the madness of the summer months now, and we are thinking towards the upcoming winter ferias already! September is a fabulous month, the weather is still gorgeous, you can park your car once again with ease and the supermarkets are calmer (hasn’t it been busy this year). The visitors for this month tend to be the ones without the kids - they have all gone back to school. Some of our visitors and holiday makers are returning after the summer madness to relax and enjoy the area, and they have much to choose from! We welcome yet more new advertisers and supporters and the Facebook & Twitter followers continue to grow and be a valid tool reaching a larger network of people researching the area. This month’s bold and snazzy cover is a green and yellow so we continue to stand out amongst the others and remain original, ‘easy-to-spot’ and an easy to use directory! Dare I say it as we approach the run up to Christmas, call to find out about our winter advertising packages to make sure you reach maximum exposure for your business during this period. Enjoy this edition - and email us anything you want to promote and we can use facebook as well as the Directory. Big thanks as always

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION Building permits (licencias) are necessary before any construction begins on your home and/or garden - with even smallest additions requiring licencias. Completing projects that have not been approved by the Town Hall result in problems in the future - especially when it comes to selling a home which, if found to contain building works that have not been approved, can be declared illegal to sell. In Spain, there are 2 different forms of permits for building involving many stages: Minor Works Permit - for walls, terraces, and barbecue areas. These can be obtained at the Town Hall. Ask for a licencia de obra menor. You will need to provide a summary of the construction you plan to have completed and an estimate of the final costs, so that the Town Hall can calculate the taxes. Usually the tax is upwards of 6% of the total building cost. Major Works Permit - for new buildings, demolitions, or remodeling. For this form of permit, you must have a written account from an architect who is registered with the Spanish Architecture College. A builder should be involved at the outset and must also approve the plans. Our understanding of the way things work with the town halls, along with the trustworthy relations that we’ve built up with the planning departments over the years, puts us in a position where we can successfully achieve planning approval for even the most complex of projects. Let LT Construction be your first choice in guiding you through this complex and often challenging process.

Well September is here, the school holidays are over, and mad as it has been at OLAS it has been fun seeing old and new faces alike with an increase in all aspects of business for the 5th year on the trot. Sadly after lots of consideration we have decided to return to the UK early in 2015 so our son Taylor can attend senior school & Amber our youngest daughter can attend college. We will be from this month be looking to sell the Bar lease on to new owners hopefully keeping it something similar to as it is now, as it has and will I am sure, continue to be succesful for the right people. If you have an interest in the Bar call in to see Dean & Jill who will pass on the info required. Georgia will stay here with her partner Kristian running The Rio Dance Club, “somewhere to dance the night away for the over 25s“ keeping our family interest in Nerja. For the time being we will run the bar as normal so get down and say hello to the OLAS Team it will be great to see you. There is loads of sport throughout the month and we will as always show whatever is on through our 5 HD screens with a choice of 4 different programmes at once. The Pool team will also start the season towards the end of the month so come and join a great team if you fancy a Thursday nights entertainment at OLAS & all through the winter in some of the Nerja bars. REAL ESTATE GUIDE Escritura The Escritura, or Title Deed, for your property states who owns the property and gives a description of the property. Problems with Escrituras: Often the description of a property in the Escritura is incorrect even if you used the services of a lawyer when you bought your house. Reasons for Problems with Escrituras: The description of your property in your Escritura may be inaccurate because: • • • •
Your lawyer did not check the real situation of the property at the time of purchase. You did not realise that the information in the Escritura was incorrect. Since purchasing your property, you have added a swimming pool. Since purchasing your property, you have built additional accommodation such as a bedroom, dining room or bathroom, or you have built a storage room or a garage.
How to Update your Escritura: If you have the necessary building licences for any work that you have undertaken then the updating of your Escritura will be straightforward. However, if you do not have the required permissions, then the procedure is entirely different. If the pool, room or building has been in situ for more than 6 years then it is possible to update your Escritura using a certificado de antigüedad - a certificate of antiquity. The process of updating your Escritura involves the services of an architect and an Asesoría, a visit to the Town Hall (if applicable) and a trip to the office of the Notary and requires: • An architect to visit your property, re-measure your house or measure the pool or building, produce a plan and have that plan certified officially. • An Asesoría to produce the documentation required by the Notary and Land Registry. • A certificate from the Town Hall (for living accommodation only). • A visit to the office of the Notary for the update to be registered. This whole process can take some considerable time so it is advisable to have your Escritura updated without delay so as not to hinder the sale of your property. 28

HOW TO START BEING MORE SUCCESSFUL
Your Success Beliefs
In part 1 of this series we explored your ‘Success Attitude’. Now we will explore ‘Success Beliefs’.
PART 2
Everyone has a belief system that affects how we behave in the external world. Your belief system also affects how you behave inside your own mind! Whenever you think about something your beliefs related to that subject will influence your thinking. Take ‘health’; what do you believe about health? Now think about ‘success’; what do you believe about the subject of ‘success’? Your beliefs come from various sources: • Your own experiences • Indoctrination i.e. repeated messages especially from people you trust or care about • Evidence you trust (yours or others) Actually, many of your beliefs are either false or are not your beliefs but beliefs that have been given to you. These latter usually come from indoctrination. Some of our beliefs are clear but for the majority of them we are totally unaware! Negative beliefs we aren’t connected to, the ones working in the darkness of your mind, usually sabotage your success. Fortunately, beliefs can and do change! For example, if children believe in a ‘Father Christmas’, at a certain age they may decide this isn’t true – this will change the belief into disbelief. So what are your ‘Success Beliefs’? What do you believe and disbelieve about ‘success’? Exercise - Find your success beliefs: 1. Ask yourself “What do I believe about success?” And now listen to your thoughts! 2. What do you believe about you? 3. What do you believe about your skills and capabilities? 4. Write down the positive responses you sense starting “I believe…”. 5. Write down the negative responses you sense starting “I do not believe…”. If you have been truly honest, you may have identified beliefs that are actually working against your success. Next time we will explore the concept of imagination and its role in your success. I am always interested in your views so let me know how this article has affected your thinking.

Food Cravings This month I’m going to look at the ways we can combat stress through nutrition especially with our busy lifestyles. Eat Regularly Listen to your hunger cues. Don’t let your body get to the point where you could at everything in sight. Eating on a regular basis keeps blood sugar levels more stable which could prevent food craving and overeating. Eat balanced meals Different types of food offer different nutrients. Include at least three food groups at each meal and make sure one of them is protein. Eat your fats Learn to love fat and not all fats are bad for you. The body cannot release the bad fats without having the good fats. Walnuts, flaxseeds and fish oils all contain Omega 3 fatty acids and they can help improve brain function and decrease feelings of depression and anxiety that sometimes come from prolonged stress. Drink more water This is probably the most important thing you can do to combat stress. Drink water all day every day. Stress can cause the body to be dehydrated and this can lead to headaches, feelings of dizziness and fatigue. Avoid sugar Reaching for a quick sugar fix such as a bar of chocolate is one of the worse things you can do when you’re stressed. The high levels of sugar in these snacks combined to the high blood sugar levels from being stressed can make the problem worse and make the cravings even stronger. It can also increase risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Don’t use food as a cure for stress It doesn’t work! The strong food cravings are most likely due to the imbalance of hormones from the stress response, instead try having a cup of tea, going for walk or doing some deep breathing. If you really do need to eat something then keep some healthy snacks on standby…crunchy foods are good like nuts, celery or carrots and can have the same effect as punching a boxing bag! Quaintly Spanish Hi there!
I’m Liz, writer, dog lover, beer brewer and cheese enthusiast. I am thrilled I’m getting to write this column! My husband, my little dog Madoff and I moved to the Montes de Malaga about 5 years ago after spending a few years freezing our toes off in the Alpujarras. I’m a writer & translator as well as running the local micro brewery up in Comares called La Cabra Azul (‘the blue goat’), part of lovely Table Mountain Restaurant.
“Do you sprinkle”
recipe BY tINA Simple Fresh Cooked Fish
In Spain there are many choices of fresh fish but many people are confused as to how to cook them. This is a very simple recipe which can be done in the oven, microwave or BBQ. with any whole fish. Take a whole fish and remove innards (or get the shop to), sprinkle with salt and pepper, wrap in wet newspaper, probably 3 sheets thick.
I’ve been brewing for years and even met my husband (though obviously at the time he was just a tall handsome stranger clutching a nice cold La Chouffe) in a specialist Belgian beer cafe.
Microwave.....place in microwave for approx 5 mins rest for 2 and then another 5 depends on size of the fish.
The brewery has only been up and running for a few months, but it’s been one helluva ride! For one thing, it’s impossible to keep up with demand, as we sell out pretty much every week. Another thing was trying to find out the exact rules regarding brewing in Spain: nobody seemed to know! ‘Try the ayuntamiento’ said my gestor. ‘Try a gestor’ said the nice lady at the ayuntamiento. When I told her my gestor didn’t know either she told me to ask a lawyer. ‘Come by and pay me 100 euros’ said the lawyer, proceeding to ignore me ever since. S o, on a whim, I tried a different gestor, who did know! I’ve decided to find it quaintly Spanish... Being a ‘girl-brewer’ in a world filled with, mostly bearded, brewing blokes has been... Interesting. Once we start talking different hops, kegs and yeast preferences (‘do you sprinkle?’) we’re fine. More on brewing, dogs and life as an expat in my next column!
BBQ ... wrap the paper wrapped fish in foil taking care that no paper is showing and put on a foil tray, when BBQ is hot put fish on top and turn after approx 8 mins for another 8. If the BBQ has a lid then just close the lid for 15 mins.
Oven.... place on a baking tray and put in over 180 degs for approx 15 mins.
Remove all wrappings, the skin will come off with the paper and leave only the cooked flesh which will peel off the bones with ease. Serve...simple.

BUSINESS MARKETING
bUSINESS MARKETING TIPS What is Search Engine Optimisation? SEO involves a series of techniques which result in a higher ranking website, an increased online presence, increased targeted visitors and, ultimately, increased leads and sales. On Page optimisation refers to changes made ON your website which will result in better functionality and rankings. This includes title tags, meta descriptions, alt tags, header tags, as well as more technical issues like ensuring your site has a site map, robots txt and is connected to Google Analytics & Webmaster Tools. Now comes the really important bit…..CONTENT.
In years gone by SEO was essentially about meta tags and linkbuilding. Whilst these do still play a role, quality content is now your most powerful tool. So, what is meant by quality content? Each page of your site needs to contain well written, grammatically correct, original and insightful content. BE the expert in your industry…share your knowledge and you will be rewarded. If you have an e-commerce site, regularly update your products. Ensure your site has a news/blog page, and update frequently. SEO has in the past been centred around two things. 1. To get to page 1 on Google 2. To increase visitor numbers to your site Thankfully, things have moved on from this rather simplistic view. Being on page 1 makes no difference if people click off of your website after a few seconds. Success is now measured on conversions. It’s better to have a great website on page 2 which has targeted visitors than a below par website on page 1 which offers no real value to the searcher. The same is true with visitor numbers. High visitor numbers are meaningless if they don’t result in sales. SEO should be about targeting the right people through news, blogs and social media. Targeted audiences will be more likely to lead to sales. Fewer visitors perhaps, but the right visitors. Another important area of SEO is linkbuilding (the process of getting other websites to feature a link to your site), although this has also undergone a radical transformation in recent years. Linkbuilding or linkbait nowadays is a more creative pursuit. It’s about making your content so good that people WANT to link to it. If you can be seen to be the authority, the company with its finger on the pulse, your content will be shared. The final part of off page SEO is social media, which is a whole subject matter in itself, and one we will cover in next month’s edition of The Directory. So, as you can see, SEO is a little bit of everything (far more than can be explained in this page alone), each part needing particular care and attention. It’s time consuming work but, if done properly, can potentially send your business through the stratosphere! 44
