¡GIVE ME FIVE!
All Able-bodied Men Arise! There’s a sentence I’d never have imagined writing. However, as I’ve been making the rounds to write the Winter edition of our Give Me Five Booklet, I couldn’t put my finger on it but something seemed lacking, to wit: It’s always a pleasure to stop in and chat/commiserate with Laura from APA Esperanza Nerja, with Diane and Marina from Axarquia Animal Rescue, with Vera and Diana from Costa Animal Society with the indomitable Sue of TAIL, and Margaret of APARIV. Wait a second here, a disturbing pattern is beginning to emerge... Either there are serious chromosome issues at work, or however idiotic it 10

sounds this may fall under the sad cultural cop-out of consigning do-gooding to womenfolk. Sister Comrades, don’t let your men get away with this! Beginning in 2017, Give Me Five will launch a series of monthly events calling out all the craven hounds who weep like teenage girls when Old Yeller dies but can’t be asked to volunteer at the rescue groups’ shops or kennels. For shame, for shame. Come on guys, as the Tom Waits’ song goes, “You gotta’ get behind the mule/in the morning and plow...”

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS) Accidents whilst on holiday in Spain If you are a UK resident and have had an accident whilst on holiday at a hotel, shopping centre, supermarket or restaurant then you may be able to bring the claim in the UK. It is a different procedure if you have booked a package holiday from the UK as you will then be able to bring the claim directly against the tour operator in the UK. An example would be if you have left the hotel and gone for dinner at a restaurant, and you fall on a wet and slippery patch on the floor because the restaurant staff have not cleaned up a spilled drink in time, and not correctly signposted the risk. If the restaurant has public liability insurance, then there is a direct right of action for you to be able to bring the claim in the UK against the insurer’s UK representative. Although the claim will be dealt with in the UK, the applicable law to determine the value of the claim, liability and limitation periods (time limit in which to make a claim) would be the Spanish Law. As the limitation period will be in accordance with Spanish Law this is one year from the date of the accident (or, in some circumstances, one year from stabilization of the injuries). This period can be extended annually until the claim is settled or until there is a court case. This can be done by serving a burofax (a legally-recognised certified letter) on the defendant. If it is not possible to bring the claim in the UK, or in your particular case it is better to deal with the claim in Spain, we can advise you. Each case varies and some, such as those against Town Halls for holes in pavements or poorly-marked obstructions, can be difficult to win. We assess these claims on an individual basis and would happy to review your case if you have had an accident in a public area. For any queries you may have in regards to a personal injury in Spain, please contact the Personal Injury department by email on injury@decottalaw.net, or by telephone: 951 315 161 20

GRANADA CITY Granada City is famous for Alhambra Palace and the historical centre. But the city is really child friendly and offers some true hidden gems. With the Christmas holidays still in full swing and February half term ahead of us (White Week) why not take your little ones to the Science Museum in Granada. The interactive museum where everything is designed for participation and enjoyment at any age. The Science Museum has several exhibition spaces where you can better understand the world we
live in, check physical phenomena such as gravity, the motion of the earth, and do experiments. In the planetarium you can visit the Astronomical Observatory that has the 75 cm telescope for observing the universe. In the Biosphere Room you can follow the movement of the piranhas, count the population of the world in real time or see human DNA. The Perception Room offers the opportunity to play with sound and light, flying thanks to the reflection of our image in the mirror. In the Explore Room children from 3 to 7 years old can play with more than 20 science experiences. You can climb the observation tower 50 m high, on the way up you have an idea of how tall different animals are as they are displayed on the walls, from the top is a viewpoint of Granada. The Science Park also has a tropical Butterfly, Giant Chess, acoustic

promises - 2017 - promises Have you found the perfect new years resolution for 2017, or are you going to rehash some promises from earlier years? Everybody knows that it is easy to stop smoking but that it is quite hard not starting again. Many resolutions for the new year do not even last the whole first week of January. Is it worth making any New Year Resolutions? Those resolutions are nothing else but putting up some goals for the future. We connect them to the change of year in order to give them a bit more importance and credibility. In reality we are capable of changing our life almost whenever we want. One good reason to do it for the new year could be that we usually are less strict with our eating and alcohol drinking habits during the holiday season. The best reason is always to change because we are well aware that we really need a change.
You can make some intelligent promises that help you and anyone around you lead a better and happier life. Make sure, whenever you make your promises, that you are ready for and want the change you are contemplating. We say that in order to change you must have arrived at the point need of change. It is usually not a good idea to change something just because someone else is insisting on a change. The best changes are the changes you yourself wants. Although we often do not recognize this it is quite possible to become entrapped and be slave due to ones own changes. Hang on a minute, why is that? Promises and other changes are nothing else but decisions. We take decisions every day, smaller or bigger, and in most cases we have to live with them. So in designing your New Years Resolutions, make sure that they are of the kind that you want to live with.
There are different categories that we can choose from in order to find the best New Years Resolution. Often we make restrictive promises. Things we no longer want to do. Giving up smoking may be one of the most common ones. Getting a new job instead of a job we can’t stand. Telling our boss off the way we have wanted to do for a long time. Restricting promises, agressive promises, impossible promises. If you want to practice Spanish, there are several well-organised Intercambio groups on Meet-Up. As well as the odd walk, these arrange cultural trips to places like Malaga’s Botanical Gardens and Pompidou Centre, and the Cordoba patios. I’ve been to a few meet-ups with these over the last year and loved them. So when I heard that the Malaga Intercambio group was organising a private preview of Kitty Harri’s Sculpture Garden near Almuñecar, I was keen to check it out. And I got my friends who were visiting for the weekend to come along.
WINDOWS & DOORS
Yogi ADVENTURE overlooks the mountains, complete with fireplace and chessboard floor. With benches and chairs dotted around, there are plenty of places to reflect and absorb the atmosphere. As well as arranging private viewings, the garden opens to the public twice a month on Sundays. There are also events, workshops, and an artist in residence. Check out their website to find out what’s on. It’s well worth a visit for a special Sunday treat! Hasta pronto! Sal Samadhi Mañana sally@samadhi-manana.com www.samadhi-manana.com
The Sculpture Garden has been on my radar for a while. Perched on a mountain ridge overlooking the Valle Tropical, it’s surrounded by the Almijara and Cazulas mountains. These provide an inspiring backdrop for the sculpture crammed gardens. After coffee and an introduction by Kitti and Nick, we had several hours to amble around the gardens. Afterwards, there was time to sit around the pool and test our language skills over lunch and a glass of vino. Kitty and several well-known sculptors created the artworks in stone, glass, ceramics, metal, wood and more. Combining beauty, drama and fun, these provide a series of focal points in the creatively landscaped gardens. Gaudi-inspired ceramics cover the walls, dice cascade from trees and a white angel hovers over the valley. Chandeliers hang from trees and a living room

Transfer your UK pension to Spain, worryfree and fee-free. When retiring to Spain, one of the main reasons for moving money from the UK is the ongoing transfer of a pension. Whether you want to send a lump sum annuity from a UK account or simply make regular ongoing transfers from your monthly payments, transferring this money to your Spanish account shouldn’t be complicated or expensive. Saving money on each transfer If you are sending your pension to Spain on a monthly basis, making the right money transfer decisions could save you a significant amount of money over time. Traditional bank would charge you excessive fees and often poor exchange rates every time you transfer. Currency experts, like Currencies Direct, guarantee no fees and highly competitive rates, so you make the most of each transfer. Simple, fast and worry-free regular transfers There is no need to spend hours on the phone or online, every month, arranging the transfer of your money from one country to another. Currency specialists can offer regular transfer services which are fast, simple, fee-free and adapted to your needs. They’ll help you set up a Direct Debit to ensure transfers are done automatically and at the best possible exchange rate. You’ll be able to fix the amount (in Sterling) you’re sending from your UK account or the amount (in euro) that arrives on your Spanish bank account. Additionally, you’ll be given the possibility to fix the exchange rate in advance for your transfers, so you avoid the fluctuating nature of currency exchange rates. For more information please contact Melanie Radford at Currencies Direct. (see details page 14) 48 The DIRECTORY January 2017
GARDENING TIPS
WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN IN JANUARY First of all Happy New year to all our readers, Here are some of the tasks for this cold month. Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out. Plant your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season. Begin pruning your apple trees and pear trees if you haven't done so already - this is best done whilst they are dormant. Leave plums, cherries and apricots unpruned until the summer as pruning these fruit trees now will make them susceptible to silver leaf infections. Prune also your Wisteria plant, cutting back summer sideshoots to 2 or 3 buds. Prune rose bushes now whilst they are dormant. Cut back to just above a bud and remove any crossing or dead branches. You can plant bare root roses now in a sunny position for spectacular summer colour. If your garden is too sad, plant winter flowers:
SPANISH CUISINE TURBOT Turbot is a large, sandy-coloured flatfish it is farmed in countries including France and Spain, but supplies are limited so it commands high prices, consequently this fish is a popular dish around Christmas and New Year for Spanish people. Where we would have a Turkey they have Turbot. My favourite way of cooking is in a papillote of silver foil on the BBQ, simple wash and stuff with an orange slice, parsley and chives, sprinkle with salt and wrap well in foil. put on BBQ and turn often cooking slowly, if you have a lid on the BBQ even better close it for some of the time, when opened the foil removes the skin on one side and allows access to the delicious meaty fish. The foil can then be left attached and removing bones etc becomes easy.
-Pyrostegia venusta or Bignonia Venusta -Camellia japonica -Jasminum polyanthum -Viola tricolor -Cyclamen persicum. Time also to plant vines and fruit trees with naked roots that are cheaper than the others that you can find the rest of the year.
While you're waiting for the weather to warm up, try growing your own mushrooms using one of our mushroom kits indoors.
Tips are provided by Maria Lavao at Vivero Garden Centre El Algarrobo A356 Viñuela Tel: 615 512 423 See her advert under GARDENINGING.
January is here and Christmas is over. Happy New Year! Now it’s time to celebrate Spain’s beloved Three Kings. Last month, sat watching a Christmas movie and eating Spain’s favourite holiday sweet, Mantecados, I was doing the usual of going through the ingredients and nutritional information whilst munching away (the calorie count isn’t nearly as bad as you might think!). In the ingredients, you can expect your usual of sugar, flour… “Manteca
de cerdo?!” Translation: pig fat. I suppose with “manteca de cerdo” being amongst the ingredients, that’s where the name “mantecado” comes from. Curious, I did some Googling. We all know how Spain was once ruled by the Moors prior to the Catholic Church’s historic Reconquista in the late 15th Century. It is thought that this sweet was originally brought to Spain by the Moors and is similar to their “Qurabiya”. As it was a primarily Arab sweet, during the Spanish Inquisition, it was dictated by officials that they be made using pork fat as a means of exposing secret Muslims and Jews in Southern Spain. This makes sense, as Mantecados are now known to originate from Andalusian towns of Antequera and Estepa.
Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed.
Continue with disease prevention, using fungicide or copper that also will do your plant stronger for the cold weather.

It’s incredibly curious and interesting to see where some of today’s traditions come from. Who would have thought that Spain’s favourite holiday treat was brought to us by the Moors? Happy New Year and Three Kings - indulge in some Mantecados!

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is one of the iconic sights in the town; built at the beginning of the 16th century, the church, with its impressive bell tower, traditionally features on much of Cómpeta’s publicity, including the poster for Noche del Vino (see below), although 2016 was the first time that a design which didn’t include the building was chosen. A series of white terraced houses, known as the ‘hanging houses,’ are another fascinating site in the town, so called because they really do appear to be hanging off the edge of the town!
OUT AND ABOUT IN Cómpeta High up in the mountains of the Axarquía lies the charming town of Cómpeta. With a population of just under 4,000, of whom almost half are foreigners, this hilly enclave, 636 metres above sea level, has been a draw for artists and nature-lovers from all over the world for many years. In fact it lays claim to the highest number of foreign residents of all the towns in the Axarquía. Cómpeta Councillor and Brit, Gwen Ferber, says she is often asked by Spanish tourists why there are so many foreigners living in Cómpeta and she believes it’s due to the friendly atmosphere, huge variety of 54

bars and restaurants, proximity to the mountains and of course the sunshine! Like the rest of the Axarquía and indeed the rest of Malaga province, Cómpeta’s history has been compiled by the various settlers that have, through the ages, called the area home, from the Romans, to the Arabs and then Christians, each of whom have left their mark, from the Romans who introduced the vines, olives almonds ad figs and the Arabs who are to thank for their influences on the area’s architecture. One of the highlights of a visit to Cómpeta is the opportunity to see the numerous

OUT AND ABOUT in CÓMPETA
Art has always been an important part of life in Cómpeta and many of the original foreigners that came to the town were artists who were attracted by its vibe as well as proximity to nature and the wonderful landscapes that it provides. Today Cómpeta boasts a number of art galleries which regularly exhibit local work
and every Easter week the town holds an art walk. Gastronomy is also part of Cómpeta’s rich offer – it’s famous in particular for its sweet wine, made from locally grown Moscatel grapes, as well as honey and roscos de vino; locally made biscuits made with local wine, which are traditionally eaten at Christmas. A walker’s paradise A maps of walks are available from the tourist office of walks both in and around Cómpeta, including one that takes visitors to the different ceramic murals as well as carefully written routes through the nearby natural parks, including to Acebuchal – an until recently abandoned village between Cómpeta and Frigiliana, as well as Casa de la Mina and an old electricity grid (fábrica de la luz). These routes are available in different languages and give detailed information including difficulty, distance and recommendations on when to do them. They have been lovingly prepared by a team of local volunteers who are themselves keen walkers. Local festivals Like any town

Cómpeta Axarquia. Cómpeta has a long and proud tradition of festivals. In fact throughout the year, this small town celebrates 46 different days, from national ones such as New Year and Spanish religious holidays, to its own feria, which takes place towards the end of July every year. Noche del Vino, or ‘night of the wine,’ takes place on 15th August and celebrates the start of the grape harvest, when in the past, people from Cómpeta would set off into the countryside to gather the grapes and not return until the end of the harvest, sometimes meaning they were away for up to two months. The celebration starts off with the traditional ‘treading of the grapes’ and each year a local celebrity is invited to be the ‘Pisador de honor’ (honorary grape-treader). There is also dancing, especially Fandangos, which are traditional in the town, music and a market. In fact locals are so passionate
