Why Caleta de Velez Pages 34-35

Dear Readers and Supporters, We are well into the summer now, San Isidro has passed, San Juan has passed and now we are looking towards Virgin del Carmen. What a shame about the football for both Spain then England! However it forced us to pick other countries and continue to enjoy ourselves! We read an interesting article on www. thisismoney.co.uk comparing exchange rates and best value holidays against the GBP. The Euro to the Pound Sterling is still going well (at time of press), giving us 5% more than in June last year, and if you buy top up credit cards with prepaid balances and not purchase your currency at the airports - you could be getting between £50 - £100 more to spend on your holiday. This is good news for all of us! This edition we welcome on board more new advertisers and supporters (an increase again with more Spanish businesses) and our Facebook page (The Directory Axarquia) continues to grow and be a great tool to reach audiences that are yet to arrive or planning to return here. Last month’s cover was picked up by far more Spanish! (No surprise as it the colours of the Spanish flag) and this month’s cover we plucked for a gorgeous and bold purple and orange - so we still continue to be an ‘easy-to-spot’ and an easy to use directory!

Distribution is still continuing to improve and increase as is our and marketing behind the scenes. We promise to withhold our pledge to you to keep the directory easy to use, and focussed on the fabulous area we are living in. Enjoy this month - get out there and try some new things!

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION GARAGES & CAR PORTS: Building a garage is a large undertaking requiring

plenty of planning and consideration. This is important as it will help eliminate costly mistakes. Today’s garages need not be just for car storage, but rather an extension of the home. In some cases, the building needs to incorporate multifunctions for a family rather than just a place to put your car. The first step a builder will need to undertake is the design. Will the structure be attached or free standing? Freestanding detached garages have become more popular in recent years as they tend to make more of an architectural statement and add value to the property. Not only should the exterior compliment the home, the interior needs to accommodate as much as possible functionally. An architect can help ensure that our client’s needs are fully met, and that the plans fit within local planning rules. While a garage builder knows that the structure should flow with the home, it does not need to be a mini version. The garage can take architectural elements that complement the house but give it its own identity. Contact us at LT Construction to explore your options when it comes to building your perfect garage.

REAL ESTATE GUIDE Energy Performance Certificates (Certificados de Eficiencia Energéticas) Since 1 June 2013 all property owners who have a property for sale or long term rent are required to obtain an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for their property. The introduction of EPCs in Spain comes as a result of the European Directive for the Energy Performance of Buildings which applies to all member states. An EPC indicates how energy efficient your property is and gives the property a standard energy and carbon emission efficiency grade from ‘A’ to ‘G’ where ‘A’ is the most efficient and ‘G’ is the least efficient.

Who needs an Energy Performance Certificate? Every property for sale must have an EPC before it can be advertised for sale. Energy ratings have to be displayed alongside the property details and when sold, the Notary will need the original certificate for the property and proof of registration. How to obtain an Energy Performance Certificate for your property EPCs last for 10 years and can only be issued by certified and registered assessors including architects, technical architects and some engineers. The cost of the EPC varies but is generally around €200. An energy assessor will visit your property to evaluate issues such as air conditioning, hot water system, type of windows fitted, insulation and method of construction. Once completed, the EPC will be formally registered with the Junta de Andalucía.

What happens if you do not obtain an Energy Performance Certificate? Large fines can be levied on owners of property for sale or long term rent who do not comply with the legislation. This applies to estate agents as well as private individuals. It is a myth that you do not need an EPC until a buyer is found for your property – you must have the certificate in order for your property to be marketed. The law applies to Spain in exactly the same way as it does to all other European Union member states.

MIND, BODY & SOUL This month we’re going to look at money! What are your beliefs about money? Do you believe that there’s enough and does it make you happy? Are these some of your common thoughts? I can’t save money, I don’t earn enough, Money slips through my fingers, I can’t pay my bills. Would having a lot of money must contribute to the quality of your life? If it doesn’t - that is, if we hate what we do in order to get money, then money will be useless. Prosperity involves the quality of our lives as well as any amount of money we possess. Prosperity isn’t defined by money alone; it encompasses time, love, success, joy, comfort, beauty and wisdom. For example, you can be poor with respect to your time. If you feel rushed, pressured, or stressed then your time is steeped in poverty. But, if you feel you have all the time you need to finish any job, then your time is prosperous. Large amounts of money don’t guarantee prosperity. People who have a lot of money can be engulfed in poverty consciousness. They can be more fearful about not having money than someone who lives on the streets. The ability to enjoy their money and to live in a world of abundance may elude them. Socrates, the great philosopher, once said that “contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty.” Prosperity consciousness is not dependent on money; your flow is dependent upon your prosperity consciousness and your thinking. Here are some affirmation you can use in your daily life for prosperity consciousness: I spend money wisely. I always have as much as I need. I enjoy every penny that I spend. Use the affirmations daily to see how your thinking towards money changes and so does your quality of life.

WELLBEING

WELLBEING Food is something we all enjoy but we don’t spend enough enjoy enjoying it. Here are some points that will help you to improve your health, weight, mood and digestion regardless of what you eat. (Well, within reason!) Choose your foods mindfully. Mindfulness is an awareness about the decisions we make in the moment, and a commitment to make those decisions based on your inner wisdom in guiding you to what your body needs. Take time to make healthy choices for what your body needs. So, for example, you might be tempted to grab a muffin on your way to work is going to leave you feeling exhausted in an hour, and that you want it because you’re anxious about the meeting with your boss at 10:30, you might choose to have something healthier — for example, a hardboiled egg and a fresh vegetable juice or protein shake which will keep you energized and help you to focus. Eat slowly. Aim to take 30 minutes per meal. Most of us rush through most of our meals. Slowing down while you eat has many benefits: • • • •

More chewing means more breakdown of your food before it gets into your gut, decreasing your risk of developing food sensitivities. Eating more slowly allows your body to realize you’re full before you’ve had a chance to overeat. A relaxed meal means more healthy blood flow to your gut, which means better digestion We also get more pleasure from our food when we actually take the time to enjoy it.

Have gratitude for the food in front of you. So often we start our meals worrying about how our food is going to make us feel, or if we’re eating the right thing on our latest healthy diet, or how many calories it really has. All of this worrying just interferes with our goal of feeling good. Instead, try approaching your food with a gratitude attitude. While you eat, make sure to taste, enjoy, and savor your food. You’ll get all of the same benefits as eating slowly, and you get the additional alchemy that happens when we shift from a worry mode to a thankfulness mode..

32

Regardless of the eating plan you prefer, make sure all of your foods are as natural as possible. Food is about health and pleasure so enjoy! The DIRECTORY

HERB OF THE MONTH ALOE VERA: Aloe Vera’s use can be traced back 6,000 years to early Egypt, where the plant was depicted on stone carvings. Known as the “plant of immortality,” Aloe was presented as a burial gift to deceased pharaohs. There are different types of Aloe Vera’s like Aloe ferox (with red flower), Aloe barbadensis (the most used Aloe as it has very thick leaves), etc. Historically, Aloe was used topically to heal wounds and for various skin conditions, and orally as a laxative. Today it is also used topically for osteoarthritis, burns, sunburns and psoriasis. Aloe leaves contain a clear gel that is often used as a topical ointment. It is great after shaving, depilation/waxing, insect bites and sunbathing. The juice can be used as a tonic for oily skin or on the scalp if you suffer from dermatitis. Internally Aloe is being used in tablet form (dried powder) as a laxative or in form of juice for stomach diseases like gastritis, ulcers, lubricating the digestive tract, heals intestines, boosts the immune system and detoxes the body. Aloe Vera eases inflammation of joints, reducing arthritis pain. It is a great idea to have a plant of Aloe Vera. The plant should be at least 4 years old before you start using its leaves. You cut one of the older leaves completely and keep it in the fridge. Cut the whole leaf, keep it in the fridge and use piece by piece from there. You peel off the skin generously (the yellow latex is a strong laxative) and use just the transparent jelly either for externally, applying the whole piece on a wound or you can make it into puree using a blender. The

same way you can also prepare your own juice (add water or fruit juice) or smoothie for internal use. A fantastic medical plant for the springtime: for detoxing the body and helping against hay fewer! For the person who doesn’t want to grow their own plant in Rincón Natural we offer Aloe Vera in form of juice and capsules for internal use and also gel and sun cream for external application.

Why Caleta de Velez? Hundreds of years ago it would have been called “El Pago de Trayamar”. Caleta (which means bay in Spanish) was ‘won’ over from the Andalusian Kingdom and passed about over the years - but did not have much value or worth as an area due to the high

numbers of pirates. Around the mid to late 1800’s when the pirates had left the and the land owner had passed on, the inherited land was distributed and villagers began to build small houses all along the coastal road. Hundreds of years later the work started on building the Marina very recently in fact - in 1972. Caleta de Velez with its population now at around 3,500 is firmly on the map as the main fishing port in the Malaga province. Caleta is about 30km

Virgin Del Carmen The celebration of the Virgin del Carmen is on the evening of 16th July. She is the protector of the seaman - the “La Reina de los Mares” or Queen of the Seas’. But she is also the Patron Saint of Caleta. Every coastal town and village will celebrate this by placing her statue by the sea ready to set sail in the night with her onboard amongst highly decorated boats blowing their horns. What to expect? You will find an evening procession held by the Guild of Fishermen starting around 9pm. The men will be bearing the image of the Virgin del Carmen from the church down to the port, raising her onto a boat and going out to sea. There will be dozens of fishing boats and along the shore followed by the townspeople and visitors. The men carrying the Patron are barefoot with their trousers rolled up - in honour of the fisherman. Amazing atmosphere and a truly Spanish cultural experience - you must go and be part of it all.

Zanzara was a 10 piece soul band and they went on to play Kings Lynn festival two years on the trot, and had the pleasure of performing in the presence of Princess Diana. Leaving Zanara in 1992 she joined forces with Robbo from the country rock band, Barbary Coast and we formed Robbo and the old No7 band. They toured the West Indies, for a month and played with Robbo for the next 5 years in the UK. After which she decided to move out to Spain where she has enjoyed a good 10 years, as well as solo, she has played with a few bands here and it was in Spain that the Mama Paula era started. gig guide Mel´s Music Monthly Music in Andalucia: We always tend to report and discuss the local news for the music scene, but have really failed to point out the fantastic range of Spanish music available to listen to and watch. In addition to the in hotel flamenco shows, authentic wonderful local performances can be found. By searching some of the bars in the area. Paco, one of the best performers locally, can be seen regularly at the Casa Bueno in Calle Cristo, Nerja. El Molino in Calle San Jose also in Nerja is an exciting bar where superb Flamenco guitarists gather and many locals dance before disappearing off to Tutti fruitti for the evening. Another excellent bar to feel the Spanish Experience is El Burro Blanco in Calle Gloria and also El Colono in Calle Granada again all in Nerja. Recently, Spain lost the Guitar Maestro, Paco de Lucia, who in his early years went to the UK and met and worked with a guitarist, Mike Jingle, who now lives and plays here in Nerja. Although Jingle recently had an accident to one of his fingers, he will soon be returning to the scene. When he does, I would heartily recommend you try to see him as his performances are excellent. Recently a tribute was organised to Mike Jingle, known as El Gitanito Guiri, which I think roughly translated is the English Gypsy. He has been in Spain for over 35 years now and has achieved a great reputation in that time. Also if you see that The Heredia Family who he spent years with, are playing anywhere, then make a point of seeing them. Try to see some of these events and shows, you will not be disappointed.

BUSINESS MARKETING TIPS Why Having a Facebook Page Instead of a Website is Not Enough Whilst researching for this article, in the May issue less than half of the advertisers listed their website in their advert. Often using their Facebook page instead. Of those advertisers many may not even have a website. That thought is quite shocking, because the first step in getting more business is having a professional website. The only excuse for not having a website is having too much business to handle and more business through your website (or an advert for that matter), would only give you a headache. But if you are online to build your business, having a Facebook page instead of a website is not enough. With Facebook you do not own the URL you are using for your business; www.facebook.com/mybusiness isn’t yours. When someone had claimed the Facebook URL with my business name, a quick email to Facebook with proof that my business name was a registered trademark, was enough for Facebook to give that URL to me. With a bought domain, you own the URL. With Facebook they can take it away or shut you down because you have broken some rule. Also with a website you have all the freedom to make it look the way you want and add the functionality you need. With Facebook you have to stay within their template, their rules, their possibilities, and their ever changing ways. With a website an entrepreneur has control over the business’ online presence. And with its own domain a business can use a domain email address, which looks much more professional and trustworthy than using a Gmail or Hotmail address. Have any questions? Want a quote for a website (and a FREE extra in July)? Just drop us a line; mail@dotsnink.com.
