A- Z of Businesses Places to Eat and Drink Real Estate Guide Advertisers Offers Inside Music Scene with The Blue Stompers Jump Review Puzzle Pages Sport on TV
Dear Readers and Supporters, Wow the heat has certainly been turned up ... phew what a scorcher June has been! Apparently May was the hottest on record in the Malaga province. So get the sunscreen out, drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and enjoy the relaxed way of life summer brings here. There is plenty inside to read and many advertisers have products and services you may need over the summer months, together with discounts and offers for readers. There is also the regular Sudoku competition for a chance to win a fabulous tea for two at H20 in Burriana Beach, Nerja. San Juan has passed and the next big celebration is Virgen del Carmen on the 16th July. If you haven´t seen this parade from Caleta before, it is quite specatular - starting from the church, across to the port and returning back to the church many hours later. There is normally live music entertainment and a small fun fair for children. You can follow The Directory on our social media pages and keep up to date with what´s going on throughout the month. WELLBEING
The DIRECTORY an easy to use, easy to find A-Z of businesses in your area and more!
WELLBEING Pills are not the solution. Pills may have a good effect, but
most of them have side effects. Because of this, an increasing number of people fear almost anything a doctor prescribes. An important fact is that, no matter what the advertisement says, pills are not intelligent. They do not know where they need to go in order to “cure” us. Any painkiller taken, let’s say for a headache, will numb the entire body, not only the part where the pain is. Painkillers make the body less aware of the pain. It may be a goal of pharmaceutical companies to specialize in order for medicine to have a desired effect on an exact problem area. In reality that is an impossible task, especially if the exact problem is not even known or understood. Take high blood pressure as an example. There are a variety of causes, including high blood pressure for no good reason. The risk for heart problems increase and medicine may be needed in order to prevent it. There are many types of medicine for hypertension. Diuretics expel water and salt from the body, beta-blockers lower the heart rate and inhibitors (angiotensin hormone inhibitors), prevent the blood vessels from tightening. The result is that the blood pressure is lowered but the overall body condition is to some degree worsened. The heart can no longer respond freely to situations when more effort is needed. One gets tired more easily and at the same time other organs, like the kidneys and liver, go partly to sleep or get damaged. Your Metabolism, i.e. the capacity of the body to generate energy suffers. One has to understand that the body has a lot of pipes and whistles that has to play a tune in total harmony. Instead of just one problem, most conditions depend on a combination of factors, some of them often being long term neglect or abuse in terms of unhealthy food and lack of water and exercise. The basic causes of any illness need to be addressed and handled in order to bring about real improvement. Pills may be good as a temporary relief but should not sedate you for life. Prevention is the best cure. Come and see us at Pies y Bienestar, , Calle Pintada 73, Nerja Tel 722 188 811

Currency News EURO VOLATILITY Greece continues to dominate the Euro news and in doing so keeps sterling strong. The on going saga is a perfect example of brinkmanship with Greece refusing to concede any additional austerity measures, whilst the ECB and its partners insisting any additional bailout money and the repayment of existing debts is written in stone. Personally, I cannot see Germany & France forcing Greece to leave the Eurozone and in fact, the rules surrounding the currency state quite clearly that to leave the euro, it has to be at the request of the country in question. Rumours abound that if full repayment is not made by the 30th June, Greece may be allowed to defer for a further 6 months and in addition will receive additional emergency funding. To put this in context, it is a bit like you or I going to the Bank Manager and saying ´I cannot afford to keep up with my mortgage repayments, but can I have an additional loan?´ So what has all this got to do with the average man in the street? The uncertainty surrounding Greece keeps the Euro on the back foot and in doing so keeps Sterling strong. For the last few weeks we have seen the Interbank rate for sterling moving between 1.385 and 1.399. For those of us receiving salaries, pensions, etc in sterling this has been good news as we see more euros in our pockets. Add to this a general improvement in overall conditions in Spain evidenced by the number of Brits enquiring re property purchases and we begin to see light at the end of the tunnel. For those of us selling property here or who simply want to move euros back into sterling, not so good news. However, the long-term forecast is still for sterling to go through the 1.45 barrier, so now may be as good a time as any to bite the bullet as most analysts predict the situation will only get worse For more information call Currencies Direct. See their advert under Currency Transfers.
Legal Matters RENTING YOUR PROPERTY IN ANDALUCIA AN IMPORTANT UPDATE
A great deal has been written about the regulations and laws governing the use of tourist apartments and renting property to tourists and visitors. Many of you will have heard about a new Registry for tourist accommodation. The founding law in Andalucía is the Ley 13/2011 which clearly defines the establishments, businesses and properties that come within the tourist law. These are : a) Hotels b) Tourist apartments * / 3 or more apartments c) Camping and campsites) Rural tourist properties e) Any other establishment regulated by law (such as water parks, sporting centres etc.) The registry is now established for those businesses and tourist establishments as outlined above. Although it is a voluntary registry the more detailed aspects of the regulations cover protection of the environment, health and safety and are obligatory. The Registry is also open to travel agencies who combine accommodation with travel, tourist guides, businesses dedicated to tourist activities, rural tourism properties and to those who regularly rent out 3 or more properties. A consultation with the Junta de Andalucía confirms that: “Accommodation which is considered tourist accommodation is that which is regularly offered to users and advertised publicly, or that which regularly provides accommodation on one or more occasions in the same year for more than one month. However, individuals or businesses who rent out one or two apartments in a building for occasional tourist use for holidays are not considered tourist apartments.” However those who do rent out one or two apartments even if it is only for short periods do have a fiscal obligation to declare the rental in Spain. The property is in Spain and therefore the tax declaration must be made here. There are deductions for certain specified costs. The new Registry and tourism law may affect agents who manage and advertise rental properties for you but if you have any doubts it is best to consult a lawyer about your particular circumstances. *b Tourist apartments must be inscribed at the Land Registry and have regulations such as only allowing one company to exploit or rent out the properties. Tips to start meditating We hear a lot about meditation and it’s one of the oldest and easiest way to relax and switch off from the stresses of daily life. Here are some tips to get you started. 1. Make time in your daily routine: Try and slot it into your daily routine and then you’ll be more likely to stick to it. I find the morning works for me as it brings about a nice sense of calm throughout the day. 2. Start with the breath: If you find it hard to relax then start to focus on your breaths to help you focus. Don’t rush to meditate and try and relax before you start. 3. Find a group: Meditation is a very personal journey but it helps to have the guidance of a teacher, especially when you’re starting out. Read a book (or two) on meditation and research teachers and courses in your area. There are also guided CD’s available or you can find different kinds of meditation on you tube. 4. Think of meditation as “becoming aware” rather than “turning off the mind.” : We often hear that the purpose of meditation is to stop the mind but it’s actually slowing down your thoughts and relax and let your thoughts float past. 5. Do not expect your mind to be quiet: One of the biggest (and most unhelpful) meditation myths is that when you meditate, you should try to stop all of your thoughts. The more you stress about this the harder you will find it to relax. 6. Be comfortable: Make sure you find a nice comfortable space and you’ll be more likely get good results if you’re in a relaxed space. 7. Rest your attention effortlessly: Try and relax and putting too much pressure on yourself to ‘get it right’ in the beginning will create more resistance so make sure you are relaxed before you start and don’t criticize yourself if some days seem harder than others. 8. Smile: Relax and smile when you meditate and it will be easier if you go with the flow without trying too hard. 9. Start small: When you’re starting out it can seem unatural to start meditating so start with a couple minutes and build up to a realistic time for you. If you set yourself a high target you might feel disheartened and stop. A couple of minutes is better than nothing. 10. Be realistic in your expectations: Meditation is like personal training for the mind, and this skill is developed over a lifetime so take it one day at a time.

Quaintly Spanish
Writing a book is on many a bucket list, but let me tell you: it can be hell! I’ve just finished writing my latest book, ¡Salud! The Beer Lover’s Guide to Andalusia. It’s a travel guide that takes you all over Andalusia to the quirkiest and the best of what our budding craft scene has to offer. From beer-filled chocolates in Las Alpujarras to the Wild West ales of Almería. I wrote a book last year so I figured I knew what to expect. For that book I interviewed healthcare professionals. Dutch healthcare professionals. For The Beer Lover’s Guide I interviewed brewers. Spanish ones. I don’t think the difference could have been any starker! With the healthcare professionals everything was ever so organized: an appointment was made, we’d all show up. Interviewing brewers was a whole different ball game. Getting them to pick up the phone was the first hurdle. Young Spanish people don’t pick up if they don’t know the number, because ‘it’s always someone who wants money.’ So after some failed attempts I started texting them, then phoning. Result! Then there’s the actual meeting: first appointment, nobody showed up. Endless texting and phoning later, the brewer finally put in an appearance. And though he’d sounded sulky on the phone (‘That’s today? Can’t we do it some other time?’) once we got to the brewery there was no shutting him up. He told me about every beer he’d ever brewed, every beer he ever planned to brew, every nut and bolt in his brewing gear. And of course I had to try everything. Basically, I had such a blast, visiting breweries, meeting loads of passionate people who love craft beer. So even though there have been times I felt like giving up, it’s been totally worth it! The Beer Lover’s Guide to Andalusia is for sale via Beerloversguides.com Hi, I’m Liz Luyben, I run a micro brewery in Comares. Please do try my real ales, for instance at Bar Italia in Torre or Table Mountain Restaurant in Comares! www.CabrAzul.com
