ALARM SYSTEMS Help protect your home from break-ins with HOME SECURITY TIPS from ¡PERFECT Alarm! S.L. Tip No.5: Let´s get Social ! Social media is now part of our lives, and is especially with expats very popular. Tip #5 is: be careful about what you post! If you blast a travel schedule across the internet, everyone – including crooks – will know you’re not at home. Think twice about the risks that you may be taking while updating your Facebook status. You don’t know who is looking at your private information because it’s truly not private – it’s public. You may think that checking in at the airport is a nice way to let your friends and family know that you’re going on holiday, but in reality you are also letting people know that your home is empty and an easy target. If you want to share your holiday plans, don’t do it in real time, wait until you are safely home. Very important: Pass this tip onto your family members as well.

WELLBEING

Quality of life or be stuck on the treadmill? Quality is a word which

includes durability, enjoyment and satisfaction. Most of us work an entire life in order to get sufficient money to be able to buy what we need even if there is no guarantee that this will increase our quality of life. When we talk about happiness we talk about inner feelings, about bodily sensations as if those two things mean the same. If we analyse it, we recognize that we can feel happy whether the body is in shape or not. Just as with the money, having a body in shape goes a long way towards happiness and qualify of life. What do we need a body for? Is the most important function to use it to feel extreme sensations? Is it to stuff it full with food, no matter how delicious, thereby slowly killing it while enjoying some culinary moments. In reality life itself, and having a body, has everything to do with communication. I think we can agree upon that it is difficult to communicate without a body. We have the most advanced communication gadgets smartphones, tablets and cameras. We can communicate across the world in seconds but the message quality is sometimes pathetically poor. A selfie in front of a famous monument. Some friends smiling even if they feel miserable. Rapid phone calls to say that you will be late or to reveal the latest gossip. Does improved communication improve quality of life? What would happen if we care more about each other than our appearance on a selfie? Quality is a rare commodity. It is mathematically calculated how long a product should last before it must break. Cars, refrigerators, TV sets, shoes etc. The market must survive and that means that things must break to accomplish resale to the same customers. In the meantime we are on the treadmill destroying our bodies day by day in order to one day have a good life as happy pensioners. Glum outline don’t you think? We even accept that the quality of health care is lousy, intending to fix everything 45

WELLBEING with pills, to make the pharmaceutical industry rich, and we increase the need for those pills by eating unhealthy food from the food industry. Who’s to blame? We are. There are very few attempts to sell stuff that we refuse to buy. Don’t accept being on a death wish and add more quality to your life. If you are going to stress around for years, at least know: 1. Who you are; 2. what it is you are doing; 3. who you are doing it for, and; 4. the result which you expect. One of the most important ingredients of health is having a goal in life. If you don’t know what it is, at least take care of your body until you know. Start communicating more. You are welcome to communicate with us at Pies y Bienestar, Calle Pintada 73 Nerja, Spain. Tel. 722 188 811. Our goal is to help people get on the right track to increase Quality of Life.

WINDOWS & DOORS

WEB WORLD

The Power of Social Media Social media is one of the best free marketing tools anyone can use. Why? Because things have a tendency to go viral. Take a recent post that did its rounds on Facebook, supposedly written on 27th December 2015 by a man named Pablo Reyes: “Call me crazy but in 2016 Hillary Clinton will be the first female president, the world will go crazy over the death of a gorilla, Prince will die, Muhammad Ali will die, Kimbo slice will die, Donald Trump will die. The USA will experience the worst mass shooting… I’m not trying to scare anyone, but you’ll remember my name.” Needless to say, with most of these events having happened already this year, with the exception of Hillary

Clinton becoming president and Donald Trump dying, the post naturally went viral. While it was proven to be a fake, thanks to Facebook’s status editing tool, within just a few days it was shared almost 200,000 times, got over 120,000 reactions and the endless comments were rolling in. Thanks to this one post, Pablo Reyes now has over 100,000 new followers on his Facebook. Now, I’m not saying you should claim to be the new Nostradamus, but I’m just trying to prove how incredibly powerful social media can be. Why? Because most people on Facebook now know who Pablo Reyes is - he just marketed himself and gained followers. Social media is incredibly powerful - use it to your advantage. Call Eleanor Makin at Quantum23 to find out more about websites. See ad under Websites.

SUMMER MAGIC WELLBEING

Summer is the time of fiery energy, excitement, and heartfelt passion and love. Summertime is also said to awaken our inner magician / shaman. This archetype heals our body-mindspirit, connects us to the otherworld, and cultivates awareness, transformation and change. Summer is the time when the fire element is dominant and the energy in the heart and small intestine channels becomes the strongest. Heart opening back bends will also strengthen the heart’s ability to create and express joy, love and compassion. These are poses that open the heart chakra, build courage and stamina, and give us the sort of energy that helps us to reach out toward others. Listen to and use your breath to stay truthful to your body! 1. Utkatasana (Chair pose). Stand with your feet parallel and hip width apart (advanced practitioners can join the feet together). On an inhalation, raise the arms overhead. On an exhalation, bend your knees as if to sit in a chair. To keep your knees safe, be sure they track directly forward in line with the toes. The closer the thighs come to parallel with the floor, the more challenging the pose, both for your legs and your back.

SPANISH CUISINE La Horchata What is this? Famous to Andalucia It is a drink made from Tiger nuts sugar and water. And a Un horchatero is a person who makes it. It is an ideal milk for persons that don’t tolerate gluten (celiacs) or that are allergic to cow milk and its derivates

2. Salabhasana (Locust pose). Lie face down with your forehead on the floor and your arms alongside your body, palms down. Exhale and lengthen the lower back by drawing the belly gently toward the spine and pressing the pelvis and thighs toward the floor. Hold a subtle tension in the belly as you inhale and lift the chest and head. 3. Matsyasana (Fish pose). Lie on your back with strong legs together. Bend your elbows, and on an inhalation, come up on your elbows and lift your chest up so high that you can place the top of your head on the floor. Press your palms

firmly into the ground

Yogi ADVENTURE

Undeterred by bad weather (soy inglesa!), I rebooked the kayaking. This time I persuaded my French friend Melanie to come. The day before, I get a text from the business. It’s off due to bad weather. Hmm. So it’s back to plan B - or was that C? It was a hot day. So we packed our bikinis and decided to walk the River Chillar. I’ve walked this unwittingly with my mum before. We’d been told to avoid the Chillar when it rains as the water rises rapidly. So we headed towards Frigiliana along the River Higueron. At least that’s what I thought until the path turned into a river. I finally admitted defeat when a) Frigiliana didn’t appear (like it ever would), b) We were drenched to midthigh, and c) It started to rain. Heavily. So I knew where NOT to go. And this time, I dusted off my trusty ‘The Mountains of Nerja’ guide and found the corresponding walk: 3.5hrs - perfect. Plenty of time to get back, shower and meet friends on the Ruta de Tapas. You can start the walk along the dry riverbed from Playazo Beach, or Verano Azul carpark. But I met Melanie at the car park near Nerja Mercadillo. There are also parking spots closer to the start of the walk, but these tend to be busy in summer. We headed towards the mountains, avoiding the left fork in the road – *that* is the Frigiliana walk along the River Higueron! And walking past the water station and a limestone quarry, we made our way down the valley. The Chillar is a trickle here, but deepens as the walk continues. It’s easier to wade later so bring suitable footwear – not flip-flops. Around 1.5 hours walk along this valley, the sides narrow and the water rises as you walk through a dramatic gorge. From here, you’re rewarded with a series of refreshing waterfalls and bathing pools. There are various routes back. Most people go back the way they came. And as our walk turned into an epic (and somewhat dangerous) adventure, I recommend this unless you have a map, GPS, or a local. If you have any of these, or feel brave (foolhardy?), you could take the Gran Senda de Malaga, which crosses the river after the waterfall pictured and has red and white striped signposts. This goes either towards the beautiful El Pinarillo plateau before reaching Nerja Caves, or to Frigiliana. As for our walk, it ended up taking twice as long – 8 hours in fact. Book author, Jim Ryan, must be either Spiderman or an ultra-marathon runner. Kayaking next month? Let’s see… Hasta pronto! Sal Sal, Samadhi Mañana sally@samadhi-manana.com www.samadhi-manana.com

OUT AND ABOUT

Torre del Mar Each month The Directory will be visiting a different town in the Axarquía to bring you information, history, places to eat, dates for your diary and much more. So, whether you are just visiting the area, live here and want to discover more about the place you have made home, or have visitors and are stuck for ideas as to where to take them, let The Directory help you…

This month we’re in… Torre del Mar Torre del Mar is essentially the coastal part of VélezMálaga, as the two towns fall under the same local authority. It’s sort of what Brits might call ‘Vélez-bysea’!

holidays and unbearably hot summers inland draw people to the cooler coast.

Tourism has always been an important sector for the town, even as early as the late 19th Century. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s, when Dr Antonio Toré Toré, a businessman Torre del Mar has always and developer from Vélezbeen a popular holiday Málaga, really saw the destination for the Spanish, tourism potential of the with people from cities like town and was behind the Córdoba owning second development of some homes in the beach-side 3,500 properties. He was apartment blocks, many of also responsible for early which remain empty for promotion of Torre del Mar large parts of the year. The as a holiday destination, town’s population seems to promoting it beyond Spain double in size in July and and the Avenida Toré Toré August, when the school is named in his honour. A 54

bronze bust of Dr Toré Toré can be found on the avenue. The iconic blue and white striped lighthouse is situated at the beach end of Avenida Toré, Toré. Built in 1976, it replaced the town´s original, smaller one, which can still be seen about half way down the Avenida. del Carmen and its chimney are still standing in the Azucarera district, to the east of Torre del Mar. The modern shopping centre between Torre and Vélez, gets its name, ‘El Ingenio’, from the Spanish name for sugar cane factory. Torre del Mar claims to have the longest paseo marítimo in Spain and arguably it is; built during the 1970s, four kilometres of wellmaintained promenade stretch from the west of Torre, where two of the town’s hotels (the Mainake and BQ Andalucía Beach) can be found, as well as a well-equipped and popular campsite, Camping Torre del Mar, along to Caleta. The beach is one of only two in Spain currently to

have defibrillators located in each of its 11 lifeguard posts and there is a whole host of children’s play areas, bouncy castles and ‘heladerías’ (ice-cream parlours). Ask any local, particularly those now in their 30s or 40s, and they will gladly fill you in with stories of the heyday of ‘El Copo’; an area to the east of Paseo de Larios, where during the 1990s and early 2000s, young people, allegedly from all over Malaga province and beyond, would gather at weekends to do ‘botellón’ – literally meaning ‘big bottle’; an activity which involved drinking large amounts of alcohol and having impromptu fiestas on the beach. It all came to end, however at the beginning of the 21st Century, when neighbours officially complained of the noise and disturbance. Since then, the area has been cleaned up, but maintains many of the bars which, particularly on long summer nights, are packed with locals and holiday-makers enjoying extended ‘happy hour’ cocktails and the area is also home to an evening market during July and August. Torre del Mar has put itself back on the map in recent years, with the hugely popular Weekend Beach music festival. The first one took place in 2014 and now in its 3rd year is attracting international names; last year saw Damian

MUSIC FESTIVAL - FERIA - AIR SHOW Marley, son of Raggae Legend Bob Marley and this year’s line-up includes American musicians Whiz Kalifa and Skrillex, who are headlining one of the three stages. The festival takes place Playa del Poniente, from Wednesday 6, which is free, until Saturday 9 July. July’s programme doesn’t stop there; Torre’s annual Feria (fair) takes place from 22 until 26 July, with activities during the day, mainly located around Paseo de Larios and at night an amusement fair is open on the same ground as the aforementioned music festival. To round off the month and for the first time ever this year, Torre del Mar is to host its very own international air show. Taking place over the weekend of 29 to 31 OUT AND ABOUT Torre del Mar

July, organisers have announced that over 30 aircraft from five different countries will be on display and to fit in with the show on 30 July there will be a ‘Rock & Roll Star’ festival. Torre del Mar has an enormous selection of restaurants, beach bars (chiringuitos) and tapas bars and thanks to its small centre and wellmaintained promenade, walking is always an option (bear this in mind in July and August when parking becomes tricky!) Most of the town’s eateries are located in and around three areas; Paseo de Larios – a wide, pedestrian avenue with the town’s church to the north and the paseo marítmo to the south, as well as Avenida Toré Toré. Why not try Fogón del Pibe an Argentinia Grill restaurant, Yankies an American Diner, El Timon, Padre Pio all on Paseo Maritimo de Levante and new to Torre del Mar is Cowboy Jacks next door to Yankies. On a more practical note, Torre is home to the Axarquía’s public hospital, has a health centre, primary and secondary schools and an excellent selection of shops and boutiques in its town centre. Its weekly market happens every Thursday morning. For anyone who fancies a swim outside of the summer season, a state-of-the-art public swimming pool opened in late 2014. A regular bus service connects Torre del Mar with Vélez, Nerja, Malaga, Granada and other neighbouring towns and buses also leave daily to Córdoba and Almería. The existing bus station and ticket office, to the north of the town, is in fact the former train station building. From January 1908, until 1968, a railway service ran from Malaga to Torre del Mar and was later extended to Granada via Zafaraya. There are hopes that one day the east of Malaga will be once again connected by rail, as is part of the western Costa del Sol, but this seems to be a long way off. With all this and more in one small coastal town, no wonder more and more foreigners are choosing to visit Torre or even live here and why the town markets itself as Torre del Mar – todo el año (all year round)!

The 16th June saw the official launch party for the new Currencies Direct Nerja office. A large number of clients and local businesses attended the event & took advantage of free tapas & drink! Located in the old Barclays bank offices & opposite Supersol, we believe our new offices will readily become a local land-mark. In fact we have already had a number of existing clients call in on us for a catch-up and coffee! Since 1999, Currencies Direct has had a presence in Spain and Nerja becomes the 12th office here on the mainland. Our emphasis has always been focused on customer service & the belief that many of our clients wish to speak face-to-face, hence the network of offices covering from Gibraltar to Valencia. The eastern end of the Costa del Sol has merited its own office for some time now so we are immensely pleased to provide what so many people have asked for. Melanie, Gaynor & James make up our local team and bring with them a wealth of experience in the Foreign Exchange sector. COSTA ANIMAL SOCIETY

The Punta Lara Bar invites all quizzers to come and support the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on Friday, July 21 at 7.30 for 8.00pm. Put your pub quiz brain in gear and enjoy trivial pursuits with Quiz Master Terry. Food and drink is available at the bar and the entrance fee of €3 plus all raffle proceeds goes toward helping the animals. Please book with Mark at 635 369 673. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has a stall at Nerja’s Sunday Car Boot Market where good quality bric-a-brac and clothing at bargain prices is sold to raise funds for the charity. Look for the CAS sign and giant cat at stall 174 located on the right hand side of the market site on the Almijara II urbanization. Thank you to the Detunda Resturant in Maro for hosting a successful fund-raising barbeque for the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on May 29, organised by Joanne and Sue. Despite the windy conditions, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal provided by the restaurant and the music played by the Mundo Cigarra band. Nearly €600 was raised, all of which will go to the CAS coffers and the welfare of animals. Some people may be surprised to find out that the Costa Animal Society (CAS) fund-raising shop has been trading for nearly 20 years and is located on the west side of Nerja on calle Dr Ferran. We have just brought out our summer stock, so feel free to stop by and peruse what’s on offer. You can contact the CAS shop at 95 252 3607.
