PLANNER INSIDE

Dear Readers and Supporters, What a year! As we celebrate the first twelve issues of The Directory...a big thank you to you all! We cannot thank you enough for all the positive support that has been received over the last year. Last month we had a warm reception at The Nerja Residents Day where we got to meet lots of our readers, introduce the magazine to new supporters and make lots of new contacts too. It was a fabulously hot and sunny day and feedback was very positive. This month we have San Juan to enjoy on the 23rd, and really, for many, it is traditionally the first day on the beach (if you are Spanish) and the start of the Summer Season proper. We again welcome yet more new advertisers and supporters (many more Spanish businesses which is encouraging), and say “salut” to the loyal ones who have been with us from the very first edition last June. A bold change of look to the front covers as we go into our second year. We have continuing plans moving forward to improve and increase distribution and marketing behind the scenes. We promise to withhold our pledge to you to keep the directory easy to use, more impactful and more focussed on the fabulous area we are living in. Raise a glass to the next twelve months!

La Magica de San Juan in Nerja. San Juan (Saint John) is celebrated throughout mainland Spain and its surrounding islands on the night of the June 23rd (the summer solstice) and is one of Spain’s most a magical nights. San Juan celebrations include light, fire & water - with lots of friends & families with BBQs and camps on every beach. Bonfires and large juas (dolls) stuffed with paper are made on the run up to San Juan, and then lit and left to burn in honour of the light of the summer. At midnight everyone enters the sea to wash their faces and feet three times in order to be granted three wishes and to ensure happiness for the next twelve months. The Spanish believe that the fire purifies and the water refreshes and rejuvenates. You must celebrate San Juan by seeing the sun rise, so this means you must stay on the beach and party all night!Chose any beach along our Coast and you will find a party - it is one of the best celebrations of the whole year - it is not too late to book a visit if you are not going to be here - don’t miss it! BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION STONE DRIVEWAYS: Stone driveways are possibly the most attractive of all

the driveway finishes. The finished look is quite outstanding and as the driveway ages it blends into the surrounds like no other surface. The preparation work is dependent on the volume and weight of traffic but normally they are laid on a concrete base. The run off for rain as well as gullies and drainage need to be planed prior to the base being laid. Stone sourced locally can be cheaper but most building suppliers will stock a variety of different types that will satisfy most tastes. It is important that the stone used is hard and sufficiently durable to withstand heavy traffic (too often substandard stone is used that quickly wears away). The edging and gullies can be made to look very attractive through the use of clever ‘bordering’ techniques which can help bring out the colors of the stonework and enhance the general finish of the driveway. This is a unique way of dressing your drive and will becomes more beautiful as the stone ages. REAL ESTATE GUIDE Information and advice relating to the documentation for your property It is essential, particularly if you want to sell your property, that any issues relating to your Escritura, Catastro, IBI and utility bills are resolved as soon as possible. The Escritura (Title Deed) states who owns the property and gives a description of the property. Unfortunately this can often found to be incorrect, even if you used the services of a lawyer when you bought your property! If you have added anything such as a pool, bedroom, dining room or bathroom, or you have built a storage room or garage, your Escritura must be updated to include these. This is a straightforward process if you have the necessary building licences for the work. If you do not and the pool, room or building has been in situ for more than 6 years then it is possible to update your Escritura using a certificate of antiquity which requires: • • •

An architect to visit your property, re-measure your house or measure the pool or building, produce a plan and have that plan certified officially. An Asesoría to produce the documentation required by the Notary and Land Registry. A certificate from the Town Hall (for living accommodation only).

The Catastro is a comprehensive register of all land and real estate in Spain and information held in the Catastro can sometimes be found to be inaccurate! The Catastro can easily be amended by having a topographic survey of your land undertaken where a surveyor will accurately plot the boundaries of your land using GPS technology, draw up comprehensive plans of your plot and your property and submit them to the Catastro office for the relevant changes to be made. Other Documents It is vital that your IBI and utility bills are also correct! IBI (Council Tax) The IBI bill must be in your name (and not that of the previous owner). If this is not the case, and even if you have been paying the bill directly from your bank for a number of years; the bill itself must be in your name so that it can then be changed to that of the new owner. Electricity Similarly, the electricity bill also needs to be in your name to ensure an uncomplicated transfer of the contract to the owners. Energy Performance Certificates Since 1 June 2013, all property owners who have a property either for sale or for long term rent need to obtain an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for their property. WELLBEING

WELLBEING Water We are coming into summer and the hottest time of the year, hydration is very very important to us in the heat. It is so easy to become dehydrated without realising, we lose water through our skin, urinating and via respiration. Many people think that if they drink soft drinks, tea, coffee and alcohol that they are taking in sufficient water. But this is not the case all these types of drinks actually help to dehydrate us, what we need to consume is pure water. Water is the essence of life without it we cannot live. The human body is approximately two-thirds water and goes down fast without it! Water is something that we take for granted. But how many of us really understand how essential water is or what happens to our body if it doesn’t receive pure water every day, free of chemicals and pollutants? Water is: •

The adhesive that bonds your cells, when you get enough water fluid retention decreases, and gland and hormone functions improve.

Your brain tissue is 75% water. Messages from your brain to everywhere else in your body are transported on “waterways.”

It lubricates and flushes wastes and toxins from all cells, cleanses the internal organs and helps eliminate toxins from the bloodstream.

Drinking enough water is critical to keep your skin soft and supple, your brain sharp and your elimination systems regular.

It regulates your body temperature, maintains your equilibrium and helps the liver break down and release more fat.

It carries every nutrient, mineral, vitamin, protein, hormone and chemical messenger in your body to its destination.

Proteins and enzymes, the basis for your body’s healing capacity, function efficiently only when you have enough water. So how much is enough? Your body needs about three quarts of replacement water day under normal conditions. activity, summer temperatures, or 36 every an easy to use, easyStrenuous to find A-Z of businesses in your area and more! The DIRECTORY

a diet that’s high in salt increase this requirement. An average would be 2 litres of water daily, yes I realise this can be a tall order. But if you take the consumption in small amounts throughout the day it is amazing how quickly you actually can consume the 2 litres of water, and this is also a good way to ingest and utilise the water for our bodies. So please take note and drink plenty of good quality water remember your body needs it!

HERB OF THE MONTH BLACK CURRANT: The fruits, leaves and buds of the black

currant have multiple effects in treating and preventing various diseases. Because it contains vitamin C, the black currant is used in treating cardiovascular diseases, preventing cardiac insufficiency and vascular accidents, it increases the resistance of fragile sanguine capillaries, reduces arterial hypertension. Also, it intensifies weak peripheral circulation caused by menopause, cleans the blood of toxins, wastes and cholesterol. The black currant diet is useful against rheumatism, arthritis and gout. The plant stimulates digestion, stimulates the functioning of the liver, pancreas, spleen and kidneys. Containing tannin, vitamin C, potassium salts, and essential oil, the black currant is a good diuretic, anti-sclerotic, pectoral, sudorific, stomachic, anti-diuretic, anti-colic, anti-stringent, hypotensive, and anti-rheumatic. Its leaves have a great diuretic capacity; they have anti-rheumatic effects, favouring the elimination of uric acids. Black currant is recommended as a systemic anti-inflammatory agent with actions similar to those of natural cortisone, in cutaneous, acute and chronic allergies, bronchial asthma, and allergic rhinitis. A fantastic medical plant for the springtime: for detoxing the body and helping against hay fewer! The DIRECTORY In print, online, social media and on the move ... we´ve got it covered!

MIND, BODY & SOUL This month I’m going to look at success and what it means to you. How many times has something not gone as me planned so we see it as ‘failure’? Every experience we have is a lesson to be learnt and if mistakes happen then look at the lesson to be learnt. We’ve all hear the saying “If at first you don’t success try, try again” There’s no point beating ourselves up and trying the old way again, look at your error and try a different way and this will keep happening until you learn to do it correctly. Do you believe you deserve success or maybe you don’t recognize your successes? When we learn something new set little achievable goals and praise yourself as you go along. Tell yourself you can do it instead of feeling inadequate and thinking thoughts maybe you can’t do it. Don’t set your standard at such a high level that you won’t be able to achieve it. Maybe you have felt a “failure” in the past but now’s the time to change the thought pattern in your subconscious mind and plant the seeds of “success”. Think of what you would like to achieve in your personal life or work and make a list of achievable goals and visualize how you will feel when you get there…close your eyes and imagine the excitement you’ll feel to know you achieved what you set out to do as you tell yourself “I can do it” Here are some affirmations you can use for success: Golden Opportunities are everywhere for me Everything I touch is a success There are plenty of customers for my services Repeat these affirmations on a daily basis and allow the ideas to fill your consciousness. Don’t worry “how” things will happen but trust that the Universe is taking care of it and everything will happen in the right time and place. You deserve to be a success in every area of your life.

gig guide Mel´s Music Monthly

Hi there and welcome to the June music page which has had a very good reaction based on the comments received last month. As I said in May it would always be great to get feedback from the readers and any ideas on aspects of the page, just email your thoughts. As many of you know, we are lucky to be blessed with a wide selection of singers, bands and music styles. Added to that we also have some guys playing in the area, who have made their mark in the record business over the decades, and we have the luck to see them in their later careers.Craig Newhouse for example who used to play with Peter Noone of Herman´s Hermits. Paul Lockey, was once was involved in a Band with Robert Plant of Led Zeppeln fame. Vic Faulkner, who has recently returned from touring in Germany. Alf Bowman, used to to be in a Band called Hello!!!. Seen around the town at some venues is Tracey Lamb, who is at present recording her new album with her old heavy metal band..Rock Goddess. Renowned local drummer Rune Engen, played with some of the best Norwegian heavy Metal bands and has been always in demand. The band Guiri, have amongst them suberb ex pro muscians. Even the writer had an interesting 6 months with Screaming Lord Sutch (too many years ago). Why I am mentioning all this as with this array of experience in the music community It makes it even more important to get to the Venues and hear the varied selection of tastes available. Scirrocos in Puente don Manuel has re opened and Rio´s Dance Club in Nerja is re-opening in June, see below for whats going on this month. Finally, I know on behalf of many people living in the area, that we were all saddened by Donnie Macdonald´s death in early May, and our feelings go out to his family and close friends. He was a super guitarist, and his talent and humour will be greatly missed.
