BRITISH FOOD SPAIN ORDER ONLINE: www.britishfoodspain.com

Dear Readers and Supporters, This month is the 3rd birthday of The Directory. Like any new business it takes a lot of hard work, patience and belief in your product. I am delighted that The Directory is still growing and that it has become a popular read and advertising choice for many businesses in the area. The next stage of its growth is to find some helpers who are keen to be in a business that thrives on change, challenges and a desire to succeed. If you would like to become part of The Directory team, please get in contact. As I am one of those people who love change, it seemed appropriate on its 3rd anniversary, to change the front cover from the bright colours that people have grown to recognise, as actually it is really because I have well and truly exhausted all the colours of the rainbow! There is also a new section, starting this month called Out and About, and this months cover is taken in Caleta de VĂŠlez where the first article has been written. Please do interact with us if you have any interesting facts about where you live, or if you would like to know more about a village, maybe we can investigate it for you. Last month, together with Bar H2O and City FM Malaga radio we had a party to celebrate the start of summer. It was a huge success and lot of fun, City FM Malaga did live broadcasts throughout the weekend and Bar H2O provided a free bbq at the evening White party. We had such a great time and you can see a few photos on page 66. There are more on The Directory website. Have a great month and enjoy looking through this issue and a massive thank you for all your support. x Front cover photograph by Rob Bell Photography. ALARM SYSTEMS

Help protect your home from break-ins with HOME SECURITY TIPS from ¡PERFECT Alarm! S.L.

Tip No.4: Install a Home Security Alarm System Home security alarms are not a guarantee that burglars will not enter your home. But they do make it more difficult by increasing the risk that the burglar will be seen and caught. If it’s obvious your house is alarmed, the burglar may look for an easier target. • Be sure to use the yard sign and window decals that say your house is protected by a home security system. • Regularly check to make sure the sign is visible and has not been covered up by shrubs or pulled out of the ground by pets or neighborhoods children. • Choose a home security system that uses indoor motion detectors but as well protect the perimetric of your house for early detection, prior to a possible break in. • Also consider using glass-break sensors that set off the alarm at the sound of a window or glass door panel being broken. Quality systems use sensors which detect sudden shock waves and will set the alarm off if someone is trying to kick open the door. Also prior to a successful break in. • Never post your pass code next to or on the home security alarm key pad.

TASTE OF ARGENTINA

FOGÓN del Pibe

This month I went to see Matías at Fogón del Pibe in Torre del Mar. The restaurant was opened back in 2002 and Matías has been the proprietor for the last 18 months. Matías is from Argentina and has brought the flavours of Buenos Aires here to Torre del Mar with Argentinean beef entrecote, sirloin, beef tenderloin all barbequed to perfection on the open log oven. There is an extensive menu of meats, chicken, fish, salads and vegetarian options,

plus delicious home made desserts and a large selection of wines including local Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) wines: Somontano, Rioja and Ribera del duero. Also Argentinean specialist wines from Malbec grape and Cabernet Sauvignon to name a few. Open daily from 12:30 with the kitchen open from 13:00 until 16:00 and again from 20:00 until 23:30. WELLBEING

43

WELLBEING It is a general belief that we inevitably accumulate illnesses and malfunctions of the body as we grow older. Older people sometimes explain away their physical condition by saying “I´m too old to be healthy”. Is that really a true statement? If we modify that statement in a negative medical way it could read, “which illnesses have you contracted so far and which are in the works for tomorrow”? Research-ers into early human life on earth tells us that we started off as hunters/gatherers. “Gatherer” is a nice word for saying that we would scavenge around and eat anything we could get our hands on. Today, many thousands of years later it seems that we are once again evolving to be gatherers. Poverty pre-vents a lot of people from eating healthy. Almost all food, even ecologically grown, is affected by pesticides and increasing environmental problems but the majority of people cannot afford to eat ecological. In extreme poverty people line up around the garbage bins outside supermarkets in order to gather anything that smells edible. Terrible as that is, our bodies are in reality doing the same garbage sorting. We smell our food and eat, whether it´s artificially flavoured, toxic, or not. The intestine have to do the job of sorting out nutrients from the garbage, an increasingly difficult job. The food industry tries hard to manufacture as much as possible at as low cost as possible and add whatever tastes are needed in order for us to buy and eat more. A favourite ingredient in this is sugar, using the simple formula, more sugar - more sales. Another trick is to process food so that it last forever without going bad. Fresh food gets bad. Fresh milk becomes sour after a while. Processed milk rots. Fresh bread gets hard and inedible, processed bread stays the same for months. 44

The DIRECTORY June 2016

WELLBEING In a healthy condition, and with healthy food, the intestine takes out the nutrients from the food and makes our body survive. It gets rid of that which the body can´t use, making it harmlessly soft in the large intestine by adding water. But what if the food doesn´t contain what we need? What happens when we ingest contaminated, genetically modified, chemically fortified and artificially flavoured gar-bage? The intestine will still use whatever it can and that which it needs and can´t find, it will take from muscles and bone, storing a large portion of the rest as abdominal fat, while contracting illnesses. We get older, and sicker, every day, depending on what we eat, and we should not ignore it. One day I offered my dog meatballs prefabricated by a well known German factory, and packaged in plastic. The dog refused to eat them. We utilize dogs to trace dynamite, drugs and diabetes. Should we now use them to tell us what we can eat or not? The statistics of longevity in the western world has recently been updated. Life expectancy has increased 5 years but we get much sicker, quicker. We have a major problem with greed in global industries, like the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry. There is no way we can change that over night, or ever. The best thing we can do about the situation is to be knowledgeable and demand healthy products and medicine that actually cures instead of maintaining and worsening illnesses. You are welcome to come and see us at Pies y Bienestar on Calle Pintada 73 in Nerja.

WELLBEING

SLOW DOWN Summer is almost here!! This is the perfect moment to slow down. High impact exercises are great to start the day, when it´s still cool, but what to do during the hotter hours, without losing regular practice? Here´s the answer: Yin Yoga! Yin Yoga originates from China, and helps you to center and work on the deeper layers of your body and mind.

Hold all postures between 3 and 5 minutes, and use props (bolsters, blocks, blankets …), so your body can fully surrender to the posture. Explore what happens when you release the tension your body holds, both physical as well as emotional. Just be… and breath… 1. Butterfly pose. Sit down and bend your knees, bringing the soles of your feet together, opening the knees to the sides. Slowly start bending forward from the hips, relaxing your upper spine. 2. Half Dragonfly pose. Sit down and stretch out the right leg in front of you. Bend the left leg connecting the sole of the left foot with the inner right thigh. Support the knee if needed. Slowly start bending forward. Repeat with the other leg in front. 3. Savasana (corpse pose). Lie down on the floor facing up. Extend the legs wider than the hips, and the arms next to the body, palms facing up. Calm down the whole body, breath and mind, and enjoy! Inez CómpetaYoga.June www.competayoga.com 48 Leniere The –DIRECTORY 2016

Yogi ADVENTURES

As it’s getting warmer, I thought we’d kick off with a beach activity. Some friends were visiting and I kept hearing about the coastline from Nerja to Maro. So I booked a kayak tour a few days before this article had to be submitted.

We were up bright and early. And on reaching Burriana, we noticed the sea was choppy. As hardy adventurers, we thought nothing of it. But when we arrived at the kayaks, they said it was too windy. Maybe if the wind died down, we could do it later. It didn’t. Crestfallen, we cheered ourselves with churros and coffee at the Parador. I was running a Yoga Lunch the next day so there were no kayaking opportunities. How about taking a pedalo for a spin instead? The ones on the beach have an integrated slide. We could have our own island of fun, adrift on the Mediterranean. What more could we want? So the following afternoon, we headed to Burriana beach. At €15 an hour, it’s cheaper than kayaking. We liberally applied sun cream, and, after a ‘safety briefing’, embarked ‘ship’. Getting five grown ‘ladies’ on a pedalo was interesting. We were drenched as the boat hit the waves. Why did we think we could manage this without getting wet? Keen cyclists Roz and myself took to the pedals while Michaela expertly oversaw operations from the slide. “Pedal into the waves!” she cried as the craft bucked and swayed. The handbrake-sized rudder eventually started to change direction. Sarah tried moving to the front but couldn’t find anywhere to sit, so she hovered uncomfortably over the rudder instead. In retrospect, bringing newly pregnant and nauseous Laura out to sea wasn’t a great idea. She retched, gagged, and held her head in her hands. After attempting to steady herself by gazing at the horizon, she shakily asked to go back. Feeling none too good myself, I ‘volunteered’ to accompany Laura. So after 20 minutes of shouting, laughing, retching and shouting orders, we headed back to shore. Our pedalo adventure cut short. But feeling much better to be on terra firma. Now I’m a little nervous about kayaking. Oh well, I’ll report back next month. Sal, Samadhi Mañana sally@samadhi-manana.com www.samadhi-manana.com 49

OUT AND ABOUT

Caleta de Vélez Each month The Directory will be visiting a different town in the Axarquía to bring you information, history, places to eat, dates for your diary and much more. So, whether you are just visiting the area, live here and want to discover more about the place you have made home, or have visitors and are stuck for ideas as to where to take them, let The Directory help you…

This month we are in… Caleta de Vélez, situated on the coast between Torre del Mar to the west and Algarrobo Costa to the east, is primarily a fishing village and is home to the most important fishing harbour in Malaga province. There is evidence of the Phoenicians in Caleta, most notably the necropolis, Necrópolis de Trayamar; a series of Phoenician tombs located on the right bank of the Rio Algarrobo, which separates Caleta from its neighbouring town of the same name.

54

The DIRECTORY June 2016

The N340 road, otherwise known as the Mediterranean road, which is the longest on mainland Spain, cuts through Caleta and makes up the main strip where the majority of its bars, restaurants, shops and services can be found. The road was previously known as the Malaga to Almeria road and it was along this road that over 120,000 people from Malaga tried to escape to Almeria when Franco’s troops marched into the province in February 1937 during the country’s Civil War. The Desbandá is an event that is solemnly marked every year across the municipality of Vélez-

Málaga, to which Caleta belongs, as a stark reminder of Spain’s dark history. Yet what Caleta de Vélez is best-known for is its harbour; fishing has been an important industry since the beginning of the 20th Century. However, it wasn’t until 1978 that the port was really established, with the construction of a port building. Since then it has grown from being a small fishing village to the one of

OUT AND ABOUT Caleta de Velez

the most important fishing ports in Andalusia. It is now a popular destination for both Spanish and foreign tourists as well as for people buying property. Watching fishing boats going out and coming back with the catch of the day and the hustle and bustle when buyers flock to the fish auction is a spectacular and thoughtprovoking sight, really capturing the essence of Caleta. In the morning buyers can make their purchases in bulk, while in the afternoon the main activity is the ‘subasta’ or auction where restaurateurs and fishmongers vie for the best prices of dozens of kinds of fish, from octopus to crab, prawns to hake.

Those up early enough can join the fishermen at ‘Bar Virgen del Carmen’ on the main road. This Caleta institution opens at 5am and sells what locals consider “the best coffee and churros this side of Malaga.” On Saturday mornings Caleta buzzes with the activity of its renowned market where locals mix with foreigners, while vendors try to sell their wares not only in Spanish, but using the words they have picked up over the years from their many British, German, French and Scandinavian customers. Anything from Andalusian ceramics, to fruit and vegetables, Moroccan spices to clothes and homeware can be picked up and most stall-holders are ready to haggle.

LOCAL DISHES:

Fried fish ‘pescaito frito’ . Espetos – sardines grilled on an open fire in the numerous beach bars, or ‘chiringuitos,’ along the beach. Best eaten when there is no ‘r’ in the month (May – August). Try tinto de verano – a refreshing drink made with red wine mixed with lemonade, served with ice and lemon.

Back down at the harbour it is clear to see why the port is also called a ‘puerto deportivo’; cyclists, joggers and those simply wanting to relax with a coffee and the newspaper, are attracted by the quiet harbour-side road and the bar/restaurants that have opened in the last 3 or 4 years. El Camarote is always heaving at the weekend and offers live music every Saturday lunchtime, along with an extensive menu offering fish caught locally. Inland and just off exit 247 of the A7 motorway is Baviera Golf, one of Malaga province’s 59 golf courses, giving it the name ‘the Costa del Golf.’ The recent rise in popularity of this small fishing village means that big supermarket chains, including Aldi and Mercadona, have opened stores in recent years. There is also a Lidl just down the road in Algarrobo Costa. OUT AND ABOUT Caleta de Velez

Other services include a council office where help and information is available in English, a library, doctor’s surgery and primary school. If you need to hire a car call into Caleta Rentacar and they can help you with car and even bicycle hire if you fancy a ride along the paseo to Torre del Mar. If you have children who live here or are just visiting for a holiday and you want them to be entertained for a few hours, ABC English are running a morning summer camp in July and August with different themes every week. See their advert in the What´s On section for more information. If you are looking to buy or sell a property then contact THSOnline real estate (see their advert in the Property section) who have properties in Caleta and the Axarquia region. Enjoy a drink, and or a meal at El Camarote down at the port. See advert below for more information. San Juan (St John) is celebrated every year in Spain on 24th June. However, the night of the 23rd is the most important part of the festivities, when Spaniards (and foreigners of course!) go to the beach to light fires‚ ‘moragas‘, into which 3 wishes written on paper for the following year are traditionally written. By swimming in the sea at midnight it is said that you are washing away the old and supposedly making yourself more beautiful. Expect fireworks, busy bars and packed beaches well into the night!

56

The DIRECTORY June 2016

DATES FOR THE DIARY: 23rd June San Juan celebrations. July is the biggest month in Caleta’s calendar: The local Feria (fair) runs over the 1st weekend in July. On the 15th and 16th July ever year the local fishermen pay homage to their patron saint, La Virgen del Carmen. Fishing boats bring a large statue of the Virgin along the coast, lit by candles and accompanied by fishermen, locals and visitors. Live music and food also forms part of the celebrations. The fishermen prepare a giant paella for the town.

OUT AND ABOUT Caleta de Velez

Currency News Brexit, anyone heard of it??? Continuing to dominate headlines in the run up to the 23rd June, this topic is having a direct impact on exchange rates. One recent poll gave the ´stay´ camp an 18 point lead, coupled with positive unemployment levels, we saw sterling rise to 1.30. The Guardian poll on the 23rd May gave it 44% to 40% with 16% undecided. Either way, with the impetus seemingly staying with the remaining in group, sterling remains in the high 1.29 range. Whether you are in the in or out camp, what is certain is that there will be immediate short-term consequences following the disclosure of the vote. A remain vote will see an automatic rise in exchange rates, whilst a vote to leave will see dramatic volatility in the markets. Behind all this however is the sometimes oft-forgotten processes to be followed should we vote to leave. It will take a period of 2 years to renegotiate with the EU, but this time period will only commence once the EU has ratified the UK´s decision to leave – this in itself could take 6 months. What world leaders and the main financial markets are pretty much clear on, to leave will have a detrimental effect on sterling to euro rates in the short to medium term. Most industry analysts predict a 15-20% drop in sterling should we vote to leave. Now bearing in mind the majority of Brits living here in Spain are pensioners such a drop in exchange rates will have a majorly negative impact on our spending power. This in turn impacts on how much we put back into our local communities – can you now begin to see the bigger picture? Think back to 8-9 years ago when the recession hit us all and we could well see a return to these times, certainly for those of us reliant on receiving a sterlingbased income I could go on to mention world markets, US growth & the impact on the Federal Reserves thoughts on implementing early interest rate rises, China´s continuing problems with regards to their slow down in annual growth rates, but I suspect most of you are keenly focused on the first word mentioned here - Brexit For more information call Melanie Radford at Currencies Direct. See their advert under Currency Transfers. 57

Cómpeta has a new mayor: Obdulio Perez Fernandez. On Friday the 6th of May 2016, José Luis Torres Gutierrez, resigned as mayor of Cómpeta, after 9 years, because of health reasons. On Thursday the 12th of May the council gathered in an official meeting, and Obdulio Perez Fernandez (deputy mayor with José Luis Torres Gutierrez) was elected as the new mayor of Cómpeta. Obdulio Perez Fernandez: “I would like to dedicate some words to José Luis Torres, who as a colleague as well as a person deserves all my respect and gratitude for all the work he, together with the group of councilors from the Partido Popular, has done for Cómpeta during the past 9 years. We wish him all the best for the future. Being the mayor of this beautiful village is the biggest responsibility anyone dedicated to public service can have. It is with great pride I take this challenge, and I am very grateful to so many people who have shown me their support and trust during the last days. I sincerely hope not to let you down. I was born and raised in Cómpeta, and have spend all my life, both private and professional, here in Cómpeta. Maybe this can help me a little to understand the people and challenges I will find on my way. I will put all my effort in doing so. I would like to ask all of you for your support: my group of councilors from the Partido Popular, the public workers, and to all the people from Cómpeta, whatever their political preference. It´s a great honor to me as well as a great responsibility, to become your mayor.” Thank you very much, Obdulio Perez Fernandez, Alcalde de Cómpeta. José Luis Torres Gutierrez: “Everything in life has a beginning as well as an end, from the day we were born. For me it´s an end of full and exclusive dedication to the beautiful village of Cómpeta, where I have felt such great support and affection from so many people. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported and helped me, because together we have worked to make this village a better place. When your work takes away your health and peace of mind; it´s time to make changes. I feel confident in leaving this village in good hands,
