LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” - Paolo Cuelo, The Alchemist (1988) The dust from dry land whirlwinds from the taxi as we slowly make our way up the hills south of Tagounite. Early morning, we passed the ever green river Draa filled with date palms. Did you know there are at least 18 various kinds? No trees in sight here on the top looking back to civilization and the world we know that we left behind. The taxi takes a slight turn to the right and slows down. Through the small sand cloud, we see majestic creatures waiting for us. Arzwal, the white and cheeky, we will learn, dromedar, or camels as they are simply called here, turns his head as if to say: - Ah you are here now, ready for an adventure? Within minutes, I made a new friend. Arzwal smiles, or I say he does. In my pocket, I kept the orange peels from this morning’s breakfast, since in my research I learned that this is a favourite snack for the camel. Waving good-bye to the taxi driver, we turn to the endless gold ahead and set off pulled by a notion that an adventure is about to begin. Little did we know, how big it would become... Where the horizon meets the silence, we follow a path from a time passed, on our adventure through the desert. When the sun sets, we gather around the fire, share stories like this one and each other´s company together with the moon and the stars. Welcome to join us and share you knowledge in exchange for Nomad wisdom this October 22-29, November 5-11. We will also plant 200 Acacia trees in the Sahara. Get in touch for more information.
Your donation of €12 helps us plant one tree.
With the Vilostrada Foundation, we now sum up two months of adventures, stories, lessons and fruit our mutual labour in a book we call “Ki Krak: To Give, to Receive” planned to be published in December 2018.

pots and planters IDEAS FOR YOUR SPANISH GARDEN Pots and planters add interest to those outdoor spaces where we all love to lounge. Choose from classic Spanish terracotta through to more modern glazing in all shapes, sizes and colours. Here are a few great ideas… Focal points are sure signs of a well-designed home or garden. But don’t leave it to plants alone to bring these points of interest to your garden. Pots – even empty ones – will do the trick, directing the eye where it needs to go to transform your outdoor space into a visual treat. The “right” urn can be very well-suited to simply standing or lying empty amid your planting or as an accent within an archway. You could even take it a step further than most by strategically placing a giant urn on the lawn to create a more dramatic focal point, illuminating it with solar-powered lights at night.
Potted plants If giant urns are not your thing, then potted plants are within everyone’s capabilities. Use them to frame the lawn, ideally in square planters; to flank a doorway or gate; or simply to line a path nice and symmetrically. Elegant country-garden style planters in galvanised steel and rustic materials add timeless beauty while glazed, contemporary pots also make fantastic focal points.
16
The DIRECTORY August 2018
Bear in mind that pots don’t need to be used solely for putting plants in on the patio. Place them where interest or colour is needed. A solid shape in a planting border can bring clarity to your planting scheme.
Grouping pots Normally a group of 3 to 5, or any odd number of similar pots often in a variety of sizes, tends to look best - it’s not by sheer coincidence that these colourful pots are sold in threes. If you have pots dotted about on your patio, try grouping them together – again applying the odd number rule – and you’ll find they pull together for a more attractive look. Also, having a colour scheme and general style running through them brings clarity to the grouping, rather than an odd assortment of different types of pots. However, if you have already gathered an assortment of pots and you don’t want to part with them, you can make them work together by repeat planting – cacti or the same coloured geraniums for example. The repetition brings clarity to a mishmash of pots. Alternatively, paint your pots in one or two uniform colours to achieve a cleaner, more organised look. Even the tiredest of old terracotta pots can be completely transformed with a lick of paint.
Hanging pots If you’ve been to Cordoba’s patio gardens or any other place in southern Spain for that matter, you will appreciate how gorgeous flower-festooned pots can be when hanging off patio walls. If you’d like to save some space and bring a traditional look to your home, hanging pots are perfect. Painted terracotta pots look as beautiful hooked onto walls as on the ground. Spanish pots are generally kept slightly away from the wall using a small piece of wood wedged behind them; that way you can water them carefully, without damaging painted white walls. De Cotta Law - Insurance Claims Mortgage and Health claims
Insurance company products and services are very important, particularly when you are not in your home country and might not understand the implications of the various policy options. A good broker can help you but sadly we have heard of a number of cases in recent years where companies are failing to honour policy pledges, and this can lead to enormous stress at a time of ill-health or bereavement. In one recent example, a bank insurance to protect a mortgage holder was not paid out for more than two years, causing financial problems for the surviving spouse. We have also seen cases where a medical history was incorrectly assessed and a health policy did not pay out for vital treatment. Where the insurance is of low value or relates to an assessment of fault, it might not be possible to overturn a decision of the insurance company. However, if it does need to be challenged there are various options and a lawyer can assist with this. If you don’t have the policy document it is necessary to send a burofax to the company requesting sight of the policy and requesting payment. In some cases the company has to be forced to disclose the full terms of the policy in court as a preliminary step if litigation is required. If the company are not fulfilling the ✓ Family Law – Child Abduction conditions, an order can be sought ✓ Evictions and Civil Proceedings against them, including a request that they pay your legal costs. ✓ Andalucia Inheritance Tax reductions There is an authority which can sanction insurance companies but in some cases the only recourse is to the courts. The courts in Spain are now taking a much more supportive view of the rights of consumers, and claims are worthwhile where there is a clear breach of the obligations of the insurer. Axarquia Solicitors RENTAL CONTRACTS The L.A.U., (Spanish Urban Leasing Law), which covers all rentals in residential areas in Spain, stipulates that any rental contract should have an unwavering period of three years duration for the tenant. In order to avoid the obligatory stipulated rental period of three years people mistakenly think that by stating in the contract that it is for a period of 11 months, or stating that it is a seasonal rental, or that it is not the tenant’s habitual residence, that this means that the three year period does not apply. However, these clauses s are invalid because they do not comply with the law. According to the Law, a rental is considered residential unless the rental contract specifically specifies that the apartment or house is not legally considered the habitual residence of the tenant and to ensure the legality of the contract the following points must be included:•
Firstly, it must be made clear in the contract that the property subject of the contract is not the tenant’s habitual residence, so the contract must clearly specify the address of the habitual residence of the tenant, which obviously cannot be the same one as that which is the subject of the contract.
•
Secondly, a reason justifying why the contract should be excluded from the housing lease regulation must be determined. That is to say the reason why the tenant needs to rent the property for a shorter period. For example: because the tenant is a student and the property is in the place where he studies; or an employee or worker who needs temporary housing because of a specific job in that location.
•
Finally, you would have to state the duration of the contract, which should be specified as non-extendable and should coincide with the previous parameters, i.e. school year, or the period required for completing a job.
It is important to emphasise that even if the above requirements are formally fulfilled, but in reality it is the habitual residence of the tenant, in a lawsuit it is more than likely that the Judge would favour the tenant and order the landlord who is responsible for the simulation in the contract to pay the costs. Legally, this type of Rental contract is not called a “Seasonal Contract”, but a “Contract for Use Other than Housing”. Therefore, it is important to have an expert lawyer to advise you on how to formulate a contract using the correct legal terminology. Marbellasolicitorsgroup has a team of specialized lawyers who can help and assist you with this and any other legal matters. Please, do not hesitate to contact us to make an appointment at any of our offices without anyDIRECTORY kind of commitment. Email:-mail@manilvasolicitors.com or ring 952901225. 20 The August 2018

OUT AND ABOUT
ALMAYATE At just three kilometres from Torre del Mar, the village of Almayate, which is split by the N340 road into ‘Almayate Alto’ and ‘Almayate Bajo’, is a great option for quieter beaches and chiringuitos as well as offering a surprising amount of bars and restaurants. Arguably the most iconic image is that of the Osborne bull which sits on top of the hill, known as el Peñón del Toro, just to the east of the village. It is possible to walk up to the bull from Almayate and from the other side by the Río Vélez just after the Hyundai dealership on the N340 road. We started off with breakfast at Lo Pepe Molina, which is a huge, sprawling restaurant just at the entrance of the village and popular with Spanish families particularly at the weekend when despite its size, is often packed. 34
The DIRECTORY August 2018
village is still predominantly Spanish, whereas there are lots of foreigners who live in houses in the hamlets such as Los Toscanos and in the surrounding ‘campo.’ One thing we noticed in Almayate was the number of wells, many of which appear to be disused but would have once been used for animals to drink from or to wash clothes in. We spotted four or five around the village, which could have something to do with the village’s name, meaning “the waters” in Arabic (almiah means water). It has always been an important agricultural area, dating back to the Islamic period in Spain and the most important farm in the Axarquía at the time. It continues to be a major agricultural area, with mangoes, avocados, tomatoes, peppers and so on grown in the fields particularly along the coast. Photographs by Rob Bell Photography
From there we explored the streets of Almayate, many of which are made up of fairly modern houses and small apartment blocks. Further up the buildings get more traditional and a number of houses are spread around the campo surrounding the village. According to the officer at the town hall, the population of Almataye OUT AND ABOUT in ALMAYATE
Almayate’s history goes further back than Islamic times, with the existence of Phoenican remains at the Cortijo Los Toscanos and the necropolis de Jardín. Another curious fact about Almayate is that materials were extracted from quarries in the area to build Malaga’s cathedral. There are a surprising number of 35
ALMAYATE
shops, services including a post office and café-bars in Almayate and you certainly wouldn’t be far from a garage if either your car or motorbike (and probably tractor) had a problem. The other thing that Almayate is home to is a large number of distribution warehouses for the crops grown in the area. There’s a pretty church and a primary school, which every Christmas, hosts the village’s live nativity performance (Belén Viviente). The nativity is recognised by Malaga’s Diputación (provincial authority) as being of touristic interest. 200 people participate in the re-enactment of the birth of Jesus Christ and the event attracts visitors from across the province. Almayate’s Feria takes place over the last weekend of June and this year it was on 29th and 20th June and 1st July. The village also celebrates La Virgen del Carmen on 14th July, with a service at the church followed by a procession of the village’s image of Our Lady down to the beach. Almayate Bajo, or the coastal area, feels like it’s a million miles from built-up Torre del Mar. There is no promenade and just a few, extremely popular and relaxed chiringuitos along the wide beach, which is also known as ‘El Hornillo’. There’s a row of fishermen’s cottages, some of which are lived in by locals and

others are rented out as the perfect beach hideaway. Almayate is home to one of the Axarquía’s few naturist beaches and campsites, both of which are located to the east of the village’s coastal area, bordering Torre del Mar at the mouth of the River Vélez. There is also a karting circuit and horse riding centre which
are clearly visible from the N340 road. Buses run frequently between Torre del Mar bus station and Almayate and parking in the village is relatively easy all year round, although getting a spot by the beach, especially at weekends in July and August, can prove tricky. The Energetic Facelift - Naturally Beautiful Skin Do you seek younger looking skin, a healthy glow, and enhanced health? There is a natural
way to help achieve this, one which celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Elle Macpherson have already discovered. “I have been a big fan of Chinese Medicine for a long time…because it works.” – Gwyneth Paltrow. Most recently the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have also embraced acupuncture for the positive effects. Cosmetic Acupuncture helps enhance your skin naturally without the use of chemicals. For beautiful skin we need inner health, by having a cosmetic acupuncture treatment we aim to treat and balance your body’s chi. Very fine needles are placed on specific points on your face, in addition needles are also placed in other points such as the leg to improve energy flow in your overall body. By stimulating points the circulation is increased which improves the facial tone and helps minimize fine lines. The treatment increases the release of endorphins the “feel-good” chemicals, this effect can last for several days after a treatment. When cosmetic acupuncture is combined with Qigong (an ancient Chinese energy technique) and a healthy diet the aging process can be delayed. Studies published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture in 1996 showed that of 300 people who received Facial Acupuncture, 90% demonstrated marked results after only their first treatment. I have been studying and combining techniques in Acupuncture, Qigong and Reiki to develop a unique treatment which helps balance both mind and body. I believe that mind, body and soul are interconnected with an innate healing capacity. Having studied in Canada I was fortunate to benefit from the wisdom and teachings of renown masters in Chinese Medicine and Qigong. I combine my knowledge and experience to provide a unique treatment for each client. The beauty of cosmetic acupuncture means that you can have a treatment in the morning and by lunch have your friends admiring your fresh look with no downtime recovery at home. Typically a series of weekly treatments will be required to obtain optimal benefits, with a monthly visit to reinforce the results. Enjoy great skin all year round. Please call me to discuss your individual skin concerns: Penelope Knight mb. 635 538 441

EVERYONE NEEDS A BIT OF POSITIVITY This month starts a new feature all about positivity. If you are on social media then I am sure you will have received positivity messages shared by your friends pop up in your news feed. Have you ever thought that some of them seem to appear just at the right time? Each month this section will post some motivation quotes that might just arrive at the right time for you. We all have different experiences of life. Those experiences form who we are and influence the decisions we make. Some of those experiences you will have enjoyed and some you could have done without, but they have been your experiences and you have to do the best you can do from those experiences. However, we don´t want to let experiences shape who we become, only of course if they are positive! Optimist or pessimistic, adventurous or ambitious, happy or sad, peaceful or angry. There are so many things that we can be. Just Be Positive ... Easier said than done I hear you say! Well the next time you feel negative or angry try and take a moment to see how your body feels, are you upright or bent over, does your pulse race, can you sleep? Does your body feel great? NO! It is exhausting to be angry or negative ... why let it zap your energy? Become self aware of how you are feeling. Work out if the situation or person is worth your energy and worth hurting your body for. STOP! Breathe and get the hell out of that situation! Find your happy place in your mind, if you don´t have one already, find one! Get there ASAP and breathe and turn those vibrations to good vibrations. You will feel so much better! 44

Wanted! Is there anybody out there who would be willing to hold the Costa Animal Society (CAS) book stall at Trapiche market, held on Tuesdays from 9.30am until 1.30pm? The money we raise on this stall is much needed to help us help sick and abandoned animals in Nerja. We do have volunteers willing to help but they don’t have access to a vehicle needed to transport the books, tables, etc. It wouldn’t need to be each week but any help would be gratefully appreciated. If you feel that you could assist us, please contact on 608 876 488. Many thanks

That Fernando Hierro, the shortlived Spain coach who took over from Julen Lopetegui just days before the start of this year’s World Cup is from VélezMálaga? Fernando Ruíz Hierro was born on 23 March 1968 and started off his football career with Vélez Club de Fútbol before being selected to play for Real Valladolid in 1986 when he was recommended by his brother, Manolo Hierro, who already played for the team. After many years playing for Real Madrid Fernando Hierro had a spell
with Al-Rayyan S.C.in Qatar before spending one season in England for Bolton Wanderers from 2004 to 2005. He was also captain of the Spanish national team between 1998 and 2002 during which time he played for his country 89 times and is ranked fourth in terms of goals scored for Spain in his career in the national squad. Hierro became a director of the Spanish national team in 2007, seeing them through their best era when they won the UEFA European Championship in 2008 and 2012 and the World Cup in 2010. Hierro stepped up to the role of coach on 13 June this year following the departure of Julen Lopetegui, just 2 days before the start of the tournament in Russia. However, following a disastrous competition for Spain, which didn’t even see them make it beyond the knockout stage, Hierro decided not to continue and stepped down from the post on 10 July. However, he remains a legend in his home town where two sports stadiums are named after him – an outdoor and indoor one; Polideportivo Fernando Ruíz Hierro and Pabellón Fenando Ruíz Hierro which are both located behind the El Limonar neighbourhood.

GOOD LUCK
Congratulations C J Owen from Torre del Mar you are the winner from the July issue 55
From Snap Shot to Great Shot I just love street photography and with this comes street portraiture. It can be a bit daunting to go up to a stranger and ask them to take their photo, but after a day or two it becomes addictive! Here are some tricks that might make it a bit easier for you:
Trick number 1 – always have a camera with you Always have your camera with you, this
may sound obvious, but they have been time when I have missed a great photo opportunity. Don’t lug your whole photo bag or a tripod around like a tourist in your own town, just have your camera body and one lens handy. It sucks walking in the street and seeing something awesome and not having my camera with me!
Trick number 2 – have a good lens
Have a good lens, this makes a huge impact. I like the 50mm F1.4/F1.8 and the 85mm F1.4/ F1.8, they are also small and relatively lightweight. The wide aperture isolates your subject nicely with a shallow depth of field.
Trick number 3 – avoid using flash
Don’t use a flash! Remember you want to 56
The DIRECTORY August 2018
maintain a low profile. Rather push your ISO up if you must. I personally think an onboard flash could spoil a photo.
Trick number 4 – have your settings ready
Before approaching a person to ask him or her if you can take a photo, have your settings spot on. When they say yes, lift your arms and snap snap snap, say thank you, and walk away. Easy.
Trick number 5 – turn the AF assist light off
If you are taking a shot of someone without them knowing, keep the auto focus assist light off, otherwise they will see it and spoil the mood. Please remember to respect people’s privacy, no means no. Photographing children needs permission and it maybe good idea to ask before you shoot anyone, however you run the risk of loosing the candid moment. Spanish privacy laws are very strict so you should not publish on social media etc with out consent or even a model release form. Rob Bell Photography. RECIPE
Hot BBQ chicken wings by Richard Fox When it comes to delicious, finger-licking BBQ recipes, it doesn’t get much tastier than a great big sharing platter of chicken wings. And just to make sure that your little BBQ gathering will be one to be talked about for years to come as simply the best ever, just coat them in a good slathering of homemade BBQ sauce.
The brining element of this recipe is entirely optional, but it’s not a bad little technique to introduce to your BBQ repertoire, as it not only tenderises and flavours, but also adds moisture and therefore juiciness – which can so easily be lost with the intense direct heat of the BBQ. 1.5kg chicken wings BBQ SAUCE: BRINE: 1 litre water ¼ cup of salt 4 tbsp hot chilli sauce 1 tbsp oil for coating wings DRY RUB: 2 tsp cayenne pepper 2 tsp dried oregano 2 tsp onion powder 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp ground fennel seeds
1 tbsp veg oil 50g onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 50ml sherry vinegar 120g soft brown sugar ½ tsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp soy sauce 200ml tomato ketchup 3 tbsp honey 2 tbsp Worcester sauce
Make the brine by dissolving the salt in a small amount of the measured water over heat. Add the salt solution to the rest of the water along with the hot sauce. Place the chicken wings in a non-reactive container and cover with the brine solution making sure the wings are completely submerged (weigh them down if necessary). Cover with a lid or cling film and brine in the fridge for forty five minutes.

two VIKINGS FROM NORWAY
TWO vikings from norway The alarm went off. Monday morning waking up in Torrox Costa ... no sleeping in for us. The sky was clear and blue and we had an adventure arranged for the day. My telephone app told me today it was going to be a hot 35 degrees. Our plan for the day was to visit La Junta de Los Rios (the joining of the rivers) together with my son. The exotic walk in the Rio Verde, close to Otivar. A hike I had done several times before and definitely one of my favourites.
water looked refreshing. I followed him in. After just fifty meters we came to the first pool where we could swim and dive. Both of us climbed upon a three meter high rock. We could see the bottom of the pool. The
I packed up a rucksack with all that we would need for the day and off we went on our Honda scooter. The drive was about an hour and we took the motorway to Almunecar and followed the signs to Otivar, A-4050 the Carretera Suspiro del Moro or La Cabra, (the goat road). After Otivar we travelled a five km uphill journey. Almost at the top we saw the cabin, we were there. We paid the entrance fee and after another 20 minutes journey on the scooter we reached the canyon. My teenage son, grateful to get off the scooter, looked at his phone and declared “Oh! no internet here”. Knowingly I smiled. I knew he soon would forget all about the internet with todays adventure! We followed the road to the end. There the river continued on right side inside the canyon. “Come on Dad”, my boy said, and ran into the river. The
water was crystal clear. “Last one in is a chicken” (sistemann uti er en kylling) my son shouted already
flying through the air. We continued swimming upstream and came across even bigger pools with even bigger jumps to really get the adrelanin going. This location is still relatively quiet as is not on the main tourist attractions. We saw only one person, a English man who
To access the upper parts of the Rio Verde and continue the adventure, we had to cross the river on a suspension bridge and climb up the mountainside. We had walked uphill for ten minutes. It was steep. Very steep! But we were at the top. We stopped to have a drink to cool down, and took a moment to enjoy the panoramic view over the canyon. It was green and beautiful. We could hear the river running down below. And saw a mountain goat watching us from above. We continued our walk, which was a tropical paradise, beautiful flora and fauna, you could not ask for anymore. Two hours in the river and we had reached our destination, a cave. We stopped and enjoyed our picnic and appreciated our good life in the sun! We returned to our scooter the same way we had travelled up the river. My sons response to the day was “Awesome Dad, absolutely awesome”! Ha! I thought “No concern about the lack of internet all day”. Some advice: Have cash with you for entrance fee. 5 euros pr person and 5 euros for the car. Remember food and water. There are a path next to the river if you do not want to hike in the river. But not everywhere. You should use some old but good sneakers. Accessing the upper part demands a steep hike.
told us it his been his favourite retreat for hot summer days for the last 13 years.
