LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD There are many stories about the marvels of historical sites of Morocco and the shapes of the land and its many tribes. The stories have been shared in many colors, in many stories. There is a that what was written by the Moroccans and the foreigners, but almost all of what is written, even if it is capturing and interesting, does not arrive to the essence of everything. It could be small, it could be big, and it could be everything and nothing. This is why I have decided to do a journey, even if I knew extremely well that my travels would be longer, longer and longer. And it seems like this journey is like the caravan that crosses the big seas of the sand dunes where there is no water and no food (Sahara means in Arabic simply this). After a long research and lots of confusion and uncertainty, I, Victoria Ahlén, decided to start from the beginning even if I know the trip has great opportunity and I know that every day, every hour, every minute is a new adventure. Follow my Moroccan tracks during 2017.

Yogi ADVENTURE We’re approaching carnival: the first major Spanish fiesta of the year. Falling on Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Day in the UK and Mardi Gras elsewhere carnival is traditionally when Christians celebrate before the deprivation of Lent. When I was a kid, Lent was a parentenforced ‘opportunity’ to give up sweets, biscuits and chocolate before Easter Sunday. We couldn’t quite work out where the Easter Bunny came into the equation though. Nor could we work out where Lent ended and chocolate began. In a similar vein, there were few (if any) religious undertones at the carnivals I went to last year. Instead, they represented the typical Spanish fiesta – lots of dressing up and celebrating. Perfecto! I’ve been to the much-vaunted Champions’ Parade in Rio before. A week after Mardi Gras, the top samba schools go on display and flights are considerably cheaper. But I must admit, I wasn’t impressed. The same music was played on a loop and started to wear thin after three hours. Also, despite the 10

floats and sambistas being visually stunning, we were sat in large stands away from the buzz. I wanted to get amongst it! Fortunately, you can at Nerja carnival. In fact, it would be difficult to watch without being in the thick of it. The costumes are colourful and creative, there’s a great atmosphere, and there’s a huge dance party in the Plaza de España after Friday night’s procession showcasing the winning costumes from the preceding competitions. On the final day, there’s a procession called ‘Entierro del Boquerón’ – the burial of the anchovy. Naturally. After being walked around the streets cortege style, the anchovy meets its maker in a fireworks display on Calahonda Beach. This year, Nerja carnival is on 23-26th February– it’s well worth a visit. But be sure to bring a coat for the evenings. Last year I was ill-prepared for the cold. This year, I’ve invested in a full-length polar bear coat so I can see it through. Perhaps I’ll see you there? Currency News Thinking of Briturning? Don’t lose when repatriating your funds Whether you have considered going back to the UK to be closer to the loved ones or just feel like it’s time for a change, there will be many things for you to take into account before moving back. Repatriation of funds is one of them and it’s essential that you get prepared and are aware of all options to avoid any unnecessary worry or loss of money. Finding the right time to make great savings When transferring money back to the UK, especially large amount such as the value of a property, fluctuations on the currency markets like we’ve recently seen, would have a significant impact on the amount of money received in the recipient’s account, if you were to choose the wrong time and service. By speaking to a currency specialist, like Currencies Direct, you’ll obtain expert guidance on the markets and the services most adapted to your needs so you ensure that you transfer at the best time and rate available. Unique deal with Caixa bank when selling your property Currencies Direct has developed a unique partnership with Caixa bank to offer you a cost effective and easy solution when selling your Spanish property and moving back to the UK. Indeed, you’ll be able to save on the fees that traditional banks would charge you to deposit a banker’s draft and you’ll benefit from very competitive exchange rates when sending the funds back home. For more information please contact Melanie Radford at Currencies Direct.

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS) Clausula Suelo – Mortgage Floor Clause Claims Do you have a Mortgage on your Spanish property? Following a judgment of the European Court of Justice on 21st December 2016 you may be able to claim compensation from your bank if your mortgage contains a floor clause. Many Spanish mortgages were linked to a variable interest rate such as the European Borrowing Rate (Euribor). A lot of these mortgages had a floor clause which meant even when the official interest rate dropped to a very low level, the customers mortgage was stuck at the floor rate. This meant people were paying much more than they should have been. If you have one of these mortgages, you can now claim for the wrongly charged interest going back to 2008 in many cases. The losses could be €200 or more per month on a mortgage of €150,000 which means that claims could be as high as €20,000. On Friday 20th January, the Spanish government published draft legislation by way of a Royal Decree (Real Decreto) known as “Royal Decree 1/2017 of 20 January on urgent measures for the protection of Consumers in floor clause cases”. It sets up a scheme for claiming compensation with time limits for the banks to respond and settle. There are a number of conditions attached to the scheme. Banks have one month to publicise their complaints mechanism for these claims with a deadline of 21st February. However some elements of the scheme mean that it is fairly toothless as there are no proposed sanctions on the banks for failure to comply. In some cases it may still be necessary to take the bank to court. Similarly the costs of the notary and registry in setting up mortgages can now be claimed from the banks in some cases. For a free review of your particular case contact us on bankclaims@decottalaw.net or call 951 315161 to arrange a consultation at one of our offices in Nerja, Coín or Mijas Costa. 23
¡Ladies, give me five ! Gentlemen and Kurt, There are two ways of
thinking about Give Me Five. The first is that it is an animal charity that raises money through the sale of memberships, the organizing of fund-raising events and its receiving of donations. These funds are then donated to animal charities based on the Costa del Sol east of Málaga. The second way to think about Give Me Five is that it is a consumer group. What we do is to ask local businesses if they will give a 5% discount to Give Me Five members. Even if you have no interest in animals charities for only €50 every six months you will easily recoup your investment and begin saving money if you take advantage of our Business Partners’s co-operation. If your business would like to partner with Give Me Five, please ring Scott on 603 416 632. Keep in mind that all advertising is FREE in our quarterly magazines as long as you offer a 5% discount on your goods or services to our members. That’s all for now folks, hasta luego!

OUT AND ABOUT
out and about in nerja Nerja is undoubtedly the Axarquía’s most wellknown town, particularly among foreigners. For many years it has been a popular holiday destination and indeed ‘place in the sun’ for Brits who have settled there. In fact, every April Nerja celebrates its multiculturalism with the annual ‘Residents’ Day’; when the local clubs and charities that exist in the town gather together and promote their activities with stalls and entertainment on one of the town’s squares (usually Plaza de España). The town hall also has one of Malaga province’s most established Foreign 34
Residents’ departments, with a dedicated officer and councillor.
History Like its Axarquía neighbours, the earliest evidence of settlers in Nerja can be found through remains dating back to the Palaeolithic era, through to the Bronze Age, Roman and Islamic rule. Arguably the most well-known historical site in Nerja is the caves, although technically they are located in neighbouring Maro (see October issue), as Maro belongs to Nerja, they form part of the
The DIRECTORY February 2017
town’s tourism offer. The Nerja museum on Plaza de España is a treasure-trove of information about the town and its history. More recently, in the early 1980s, Nerja became famous in Spain and internationally thanks to the huge success of the television series ‘Verano Azul,’ which was filmed there. There are a number of reminders of the programme, such as streets named after
OUT AND AB
characters, a statue of ‘Chanquete’ the fisherman in the tourist office and the Verano Azul park which is home to Chanquete’s boat.
Town centre and beaches The world-famous Balcón de Europa is located in the town centre, on the site of a former military castle. During a visit from Spain’s King Alfonso 12th on 20 January 1885 following the terrible earthquake which destroyed much of the Axarquía, he declared that he was standing, “on the balcony of Europe,” thus giving the extensive viewing point its name. A bronze statue of the king can be found on the left-hand side of the Balcón, which overlooks the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean as well as the numerous stunning beaches, coves and cliffs that make up Nerja and Maro’s coastline. The most popular beaches are ‘El Playazo’ and ‘Torrecilla’ to the west and Calahonda and Salón which are just below the Balcón itself. Tucked around the corner to the east, out of view from the balcony is the 800 metre-long Burriana beach, lined with bars, restaurants and outdoor adventure companies, offering kayaking and scuba diving around Nerja and the Maro cliffs.
Rio Chillar The Chillar River (Río Chillar) has, in recent years, become almost as popular a tourist activity as the beaches. A hike through the shallow waters of the river is the perfect way to cool down in the long hot summer months, taking in waterfalls and natural pools as well
BOUT in NERJA
as steep gorges. Although until now access has not been controlled and accidents have been frequent, the town hall and Junta de Andalucía (Andalusia’s regional government) are looking into ways of controlling visitor numbers and creating an information centre.
Walking routes The mountain range of the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama create a beautiful backdrop to Nerja and can be enjoyed thanks to a series of walking routes. More information about hiking in the mountains can be found at the tourist information centre. The best times for walking are in the cooler spring and autumn months and most winter days are great too – just check the weather forecast before you go because heavy rainfall and flash flooding is not entirely uncommon at that time of year either! 35
NERJA
Festivals Nerja seems to have an almost year-round eventprogramme, which starts off with Carnaval (carnival). This usually takes place in February although the date changes every year depending on when Easter falls. This year (2017) the four-day party will start on Thursday 23 February and includes two processions as well as competitions. The final and somewhat bizarre event of the ‘Entierro del Bogueron’ or burial of the anchovy involves a large decorated anchovy (not a real one) being paraded through the streets to La Calahonda beach, where it’s blown up as part of a fireworks display. Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is also an important event in Nerja and processions continue throughout the week leading up to Easter. Although not as big as nearby VélezMálaga, it is still a spectacular sight with the different ‘Cofradias’ or brotherhoods carry giant shrines of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ through the streets accompanied by marching bands.
San Isidro Practical information
Nerja’s tourist information office can be found at the town hall on Plaza de España, near the Balcón de Europa. The website www. nerja.es/turismo is available in English and Spanish. Alsa operates a regular bus services between Malaga, Nerja and the Nerja caves and the bus stops at Torre del Mar, Torrox and the coastal towns in between. Visit www.alsa.es for timetables and fares. A tourist train operates between Nerja, the caves and Maro during the summer months. There is a wide variety of restaurants and cafes in Nerja offering anything from typical Spanish cuisine to Italian, Mexican and Indian as well as British and Irish pubs.
36
In May Nerjeños honour the Patron Saint of farmers and labourers; San Isidro. As an area heavily dependent on agriculture this Saint plays an important role for many towns and villages in the Axarquía. The event starts on the night of the 14th at the Nerja caves and on the 15th Mass is given in the El Salvador church near the Balcón. A statue of the saint is then carried up to the caves accompanied by people in traditional dress.
Feria Nerja’s annual Feria (fair) takes place in the second week of October and celebrates the town’s two Patron Saints: La Virgen de las Angustias and San Miguel. Events take place in and around the town, including a fairground, typical food and drink tastings and traditional music and dance.
Music and dance The Nerja caves play host to an international dance and music festival throughout July and in 2016 Nerja hosted its first international music festival; Chanquete World Music Festival. A number of well-known Spanish musicians performed at the one-day event and plans to repeat it have been announced for this year.

Cordoba is located north of Malaga, a city usually forgotten when thinking of a beautiful historical city to visit. First choices are usually Seville or Granada but Cordoba has everything to offer a keen traveller who wishes to experience an Andalucian City. From Malaga Cordoba is approx. 1 hour 50 mins by car or alternatively travel from Malaga by train direct to Cordoba in approx. 1 hour, for around €45 return per adult, €35 per child and 4 years and under travel free (www.trenes.com). This city holds many world awards which include World Heritage site for the MosqueCathedral and historical quarter surrounding it, The Festival of the Patios (famous flower fiesta), Cultural and Humanity awards for Flamenco and the Mediterranean diet. A little history - The origins of Cordoba are lost in the mists of time. Its position by the river and the fertile farming land of the Campiña made it a perfect place for the first prehistoric settlements. However, it was not until the late Bronze Age (8th/9th century B.C.) when the first proper settlement was established. After the arrival of the Phoenicians and Greeks on the peninsula, the city became known as an important mining and commercial centre, since the River Guadalquivir was then navigable as far as Cordoba. This facilitated the spread of artistic and commercial products and made for easier communication with the main cities of the period. Weather in Cordoba, the months of July and August are usually extremely hot with temperatures as high as 40 degrees, ideal 48

carolynhasson@triangletravel.co.uk months to visit this city are from March - June and September- November when it is much more enjoyable to wander around the cobble streets enjoying the sights and alfresco lifestyle. I mentioned earlier The Festival of the Patios, this takes place during the first 2 weeks in May where owners decorate their houses with great care and try and win the prestigious award offered by the Town Hall. This fiesta also offers a number of performances scheduled with singers, traditional flamenco whilst the local wine from Montilla-Moriles flows freely and delicious tapas are served. This a very busy period and it is highly recommended hotels are booked in advance. If you have children and would like to do something fun and combine it with a trip to the city, why not visit the Alpacas in Andalucia. This is a fantastic farm run by a British family, a two night Alpaca Experience is €300 for up to four people, or €350 for six. That price includes evening meals and breakfast. You get time with the alpacas, alpaca walks, feeding time, crafts for the kids and a special gift to take home. Swimming pool is available during the summer months. Visit their page on facebook ‘Experience Alpacas in Andalucia’ if you mention ‘The Directory’ you will receive a 10% discount for holidays for mid week (Tues & Wed) stays. For more information about this beautiful Andulcian gem please visit www.english. turismodecordoba.org where you will find information on fiesta dates, information on tours and places to visit, eat and drink.

holy smoke or progress? There are many new trends in the “civilised” world. Many of them can be summed up as more and the faster the better. One thing with which we want to identify humanity is living longer, being smarter, more attractive, happiness and abundance. In reality that type of progress doesn’t withstand scrutiny. A true human characteristic is that we produce more waste than any other species. We add years to life instead of adding life to the years; we think we are smarter due to technological advances but elect terrible choices to govern us; we look attractive through chemical or surgical magic; are happy with the aid of drugs and drinks and crave for abundance while more and more people live in poverty. Ancient medicine placed most of our ailments in our minds and modern medicine treats us as chemo/electrical responses in the dirt we came out of. Where is the progress? Are we happier, more human, now than before? It is important to be positive in midst of all depressing news but in reality that is not easy. Progress, if there is to be any, can never be primarily in our technical skills and advances. It has to be in who we are and what we use the advances for. Just like nuclear energy should be for energy, not for bombs. Health care should be for achieving and maintaining health, not for keeping illnesses or symptoms at check. We need to start seeing and naming things for what they are. In science the goal is to uncover truth. That does not compare to “Science” in Economy, Medicine, Psychology or Psychiatry. Those branches of investigation are to a large degree dedicated at finding statistical patterns that will lead to economic growth, quenching pain or distress and controlling discordant forces. Examples are economic growth by legal fraud; treating multiple ailments by suppressing symptoms; handling anxiety and stress with sedation. That is a loosing 50

battle leading to obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. We, ourselves are the victims. Because of this, the United States, where more money is spent on medicine than in any other country, is country number 31 on life expectancy. We get so seduced by fiction in media that we forget that real life surpasses anything we see or hear. Do you want to keep on dreaming, or do you want a change into something sustainable and sane? Do you want to be healthy? Nobody else is going to do the job for you. At Pies y Bienestar we are ready to support you on health improvements whenever you are.
