Currency News

Dovish BoE sinks pound, impressive data supports euro

Delays to Brexit talks unsettle pound Sterling Staying on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks… Latest currency news It’s been a volatile two weeks for the pound, with markets having plenty to react to. GBP/ EUR struck a high of €1.1491, but quickly slumped again, reaching a low of €1.1297. After GBP/USD hit a high of US$1.3453 the pairing swiftly dropped to a low of US$1.3306, although the exchange rate has now recovered much of its losses. EUR/GBP slumped to £0.8763 after the latest European Central Bank (ECB) meeting, but quickly rebounded to a high of £0.8851. EUR/USD trended somewhat more calmly between a high of US$1.1847 and a low of US$1.1722. What’s been happening? There has been plenty on the economic, political and monetary fronts to keep the pound on volatile form these past couple of weeks. The Bank of England (BoE) opted to keep interest rates frozen at 0.5%. While this was largely expected, the fact not one policymaker voted for another round of tightening showed the BoE was feeling very cautious about the economy indeed. Markets didn’t have long to dwell on the monetary policy outlook, however, as there was plenty happening with regards to Brexit to keep Sterling volatile. With the EU having set Friday 8th as the deadline for agreeing issues such as the Brexit divorce bill and the Irish border in order for the European Council to vote in favour of beginning trade negotiations. It seemed that, after months of fretting over the divorce bill, it could have been the Irish border that derailed the Brexit timetable permanently. The UK made some concessions, but these were swiftly blocked by Northern Ireland’s DUP, who Theresa May has to keep on side in order to hold a majority in Parliament. Then, last Friday, the European Council agreed that sufficient progress had been made in talks and that discussions on trade could begin. Sterling wasn’t happy, however, after many officials warned that this was going to be much harder than the initial phase of talks. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker also soured appetite for the pound after stating that talks on trade wouldn’t start until around March. After striking a six-month high on the 8th after the Irish border issues were resolved, GBP/ EUR quickly tumbled and is now back around the levels seen a fortnight ago. The euro had hit a one-week low after the latest European Central Bank (ECB) meeting, which gave no new details about when the quantitative easing programme may end. Policymakers also kept their inflation projections sluggish, despite being upbeat about the Eurozone economy, suggesting monetary tightening is still a long way away. GBP/USD spiked last week after the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) delivered the expected interest rate hike. At Currencies Direct we’re here to talk currency whenever you need us, so get in touch if you want to know more about the latest news or how it could impact your currency transfers. LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD THE TANMIRT EXPEDITION 2018 Sahara is the symbol for the world we want to live in. She guides us on how we want to live our lives: No doors, simply in harmony together with Mother Earth. Our aim at Vilostrada Foundation is to pay forward the immense privilege that many of us have, yet many others with whom we share our amazing planet do not. We start our work with one of the most beautiful indigenous people in the world - the Berber Nomads of the Sahara. We want to give back to the world and support essential communities in building a self-sustainable future for themselves, whilst preserving their traditions and culture, through education and enterprise. We empower communities to take charge of their own future and maintain their own heritage for generations to come. In Morocco, everyone is welcome, newcomers, tourists, all, with a smile and open heart. This is the core too of Vilostrada Foundation - to remind ourselves, you, and the rest of the world that the world belongs to all of us. Just like the Nomads “Tanmirt”, our land, the Sahara, belongs to all of us. All of humanity passed here and we strive as humans to go back to the core of being. In 2018, we invite you to the Tanmirt Expedition, part of the project Tanmirt Education for Life. 14

The DIRECTORY January 2018

We will GIVE BACK to the Nomads with education such as mutual language, reading, writing, mathematics. All the skills they need to be able stay exactly where they want to be, in the Sahara. The Nomads will GIVE BACK to the world the wisdom of peace, open doors, back to core of humanity where we live a life focused on nature and each other - not belongings. The Tanmirt Expedition will create a world bank of Nomad memories - recorded audio stories, videos and photos never to be lost for the world, for us to always have access to. In short, we will publish a book and a produce a documentary. Victoria Ahlén, founder of Vilostrada, is an expert Moroccan artisan buyer, and founder of the Vilostrada Foundation running the Education for Life project together with the Nomads in Sahara, Morocco since 2016.

HOME & GARDEN

How to Keep Warm and Cosy in Your Spanish Home You might expect Spanish winters to be no different from Spanish summers - after all, this country is hot, right? But if you’re now used to this part of the world, you will know that winters can get decidedly cold.

So how does everyone stay warm? Gone are the days when Spanish families huddled cosily around the table, a thick cloth covering their legs with a brasero (coal burning pan) burning beneath it to keep them warm. Over time, house fires inevitably broke out and the dangerous carbon monoxide generated from braseros when doors and windows were shut often killed silently while victims slept – scary stuff... The modern brasero is thankfully safer than in olden days. Today, most consist of electric, thermostatic heaters instead. However, heating prices have caused the more traditional brasero to make a comeback for use outside or very carefully inside with a window open. If you fancy warming up the Spanish way, check them out at your nearest DIY store. Stand-alone bottled gas heaters on casters have to be the next most economical heat sources and you can push them from room to room conveniently. Gas bottle replacements only cost around 16€ each and last up to three or four weeks at a time. Get your first bottle (bombona) from the local hardware store or gas depot (you’ll need to pay a one-off deposit of about 40€). The cons? The aesthetics and size of the heater, particularly if your home is on the small side; storing it during warm months; and the levels of condensation they can produce. Make absolutely sure

you keep a window slightly open to avoid unhealthy levels of carbon monoxide accumulating. Panel radiators are more attractive and less obtrusive than gas heaters. What’s more, they are low voltage and quite economical to run. Some electric supplies are easily tripped when you have too many appliances switched on but with these at only 450W, you won’t be stuck grappling in the dark for candles. Bear in mind that these slim heaters only take the nip off the air with background heat so if you’re looking for a heat rush, choose something more powerful. Oil-filled radiators are efficient and with the thermostat set to medium, you’ll find they are pretty economical too. Simply set the thermostat and you won’t have to remember to switch them on and off. Other advantages are they don’t emit any fumes and they are less bulky than gas heaters. Curling up the fire is magical, even in sunny Spain and the gorgeous smell of smoke puffing from the chimneys of Spanish village homes forms many a winter holiday memory. It’s easy to have logs (normally half or one tonne’s worth) delivered to your home. If there’s no room to store them, you can pick up smaller quantities from your local petrol station or log suppliers. Better still, take a walk in the woods and gather sun-parched fallen branches along with pine cones - excellent for starting fires. Open fires don’t always heat the room entirely, in which case you might need another heat source to supplement your fire. Wood burning stoves – cast iron ones with a windowed door - can be fitted inside your fireplace or independently and make a beautiful focal point. The heat they generate can be fan-assisted and is much hotter than anything you get from an open fire. Obviously, there’s a cost implication of at least 600€ for the wood burner, but you’ll find comfort in fewer extra heating costs in the long term, particularly if you have the flue running up through an upstairs bedroom, warming as the heat radiates upwards. Air-conditioning is often pre-installed in modern Spanish homes but most people complain about the dry heat it emits, let alone the electricity it uses up. But if you aren’t staying long, you might find this is the best option and turned down low

as a background heater, it could be all you need. Fitted unobtrusively above doors or windows, air-conditioning units are wonderfully space-saving as well as clean. Convection and fan heaters are notorious for eating up electricity yet they are economical to buy and brilliant for warming up a chilly room quickly and without fuss. Buying a new one with a thermostat and an EU energy efficiency rating of at least A will stave off the worst electricity bills. Extra winter warming tips! • A sharp blast from a hairdryer warms up the bed before you get inside – make sure you hold up the bed covers safety first. • Keep drafts at bay by fitting curtains across windows, doorways and behind doors. • Fit draft excluders on doors leading outside – either “serious” ones to stick or screw to the door or decorative sand-filled “sausage” to match your décor. • Avoid the chill with a Spanish brasero under the table outside as you enjoy the winter sunshine!

Insurance Claims - Mortgage and Health Claims Insurance company products and services are very important, particularly when you are not in your home country and might not understand all the implications of the various policy options. A good broker can help you, but sadly we have heard of a number of cases in recent years where companies are failing to honour policy pledges and this can lead to enormous stress at a time of ill health or bereavement. In one recent example, a bank insurance protecting a mortgage holder was not paid out for more than two years, causing financial problems for the surviving spouse. We have also seen cases where a medical history was incorrectly assessed and a health policy did not pay out for vital treatment. Where the insurance is of low value or relates to an assessment of fault, it might not be possible to overturn a decision of the insurance company. However, if it does need to be challenged there are various options and a lawyer can assist with this. If you don’t have the policy document it is necessary to send a burofax to the company requesting sight of the policy and requesting payment. In some cases, the company has to be forced to enter the policy into court as a preliminary step if litigation is required. If the company is not fulfilling the conditions an order can ✓ Property-Buying, Selling and Renting be sought against them including a request that they pay your legal costs. ✓ Holiday & Tourist Rental Licences There is an authority which can sanction insurance companies but in some cases the only recourse is to the courts, particularly as there is now far more consumer protection in Spain.

✓ Litigation - Boundary Disputes ✓ Mortgage Floor Clause Claims ✓ Insurance Claims

From Snap Shot to Great Shot Getting Proper Exposure for Night Photography pt2 Following on from last month article getting proper exposure for night photography Take test shots, you should make liberal use of them when shooting at night. However, you don’t want to sit around for 30 seconds, a minute, or even longer, waiting to see if the test shot is going to work out. The best way to get a test, without wasting a lot of time doing so, is to take tone at a much higher ISO than you would ordinarily use. For example, let’s say you think the proper exposure settings for a given shot are: 30 seconds at f/5.6 with an ISO of 400. Rather than taking that shot and waiting around 30 seconds for the exposure, crank up the ISO and speed up the shutter speed by the same number of stops. The exposure level will be the same, but it will take a lot less time to expose the test picture. Once you are happy with the composition and exposure just lower your ISO to 400 and shutter speed back to 30 seconds. Night photography is one area where you will want to bracket your photos. Blending 32

The DIRECTORY January 2018

and HDR can work wonders at night, but even if you are against such processing, bracket your photos anyway. Think of it as exposure insurance. After you have taken your exposures, check them on the LCD on the back of your camera. The picture on the LCD will show you if the exposure is close to correct, but it is better to also check the histogram to make sure the exposure is within the dynamic range of your camera. If you are not totally comfortable with exposure, then doing some night photography will get you there in a hurry. You will have your camera on a tripod in unchanging light, so you can take as much time as you need to think through the exposure, and get it right. You’ll be forced to take into account the highlights and shadows when you meter, then study them on your histogram. Taking test shots, and making adjustments, will help you see the interrelationships between the exposure controls. Rob Bell Photography. Capturing a Moment in Time. www.robbell.photography

OUT AND ABOUT

out and about in ARENAS The first things that hit you as you drive into Arenas are the colourful murals depicting life in the town. There is even a mural route and clearly marked route maps are available at the town hall, which is at the entrance to the town if you’re coming from Vélez-Málaga. The smaller cream and green plaques, of which there are 12, carry quotes from songs which were sung or dances that were danced by the young people of the village, presumably long before the Balcones de Bentomíz discoteca was built (see below). Young people would gather at different locations in the village to sing traditional songs, accompanied by the zambomba, a traditional Malaga instrument, or circle dances (bailes de rueda). The enormous Balcones de Bentomíz is actually a large events venue and is popular for weddings, which may explain why it’s so well signposted around Arenas. In fact it’s the only thing that is signposted, as Michelle and I discovered when she decided to drive up the narrow, windy roads through the town instead of going along the wider road which appeared to circumnavigate the place. We eventually got out but did make friends (or enemies) with a few surprised locals who were probably rightly thinking “more lost foreigners thinking they know Photo supplied by Rob Bell Photography

it all” as we asked for directions. Our unplanned route did take us past the town’s olive oil company, Cooperativa Agricola Santa Catalina Mártir, which has been in the town since 1970. What Arenas is probably most wellknown for though, is the Betomíz tower. It’s one of the Axarquía’s examples of Islamic fortresses, similar to the one on Vélez-Málaga and Comares. However, the Bentomíz castle claims to be the biggest in Malaga province. Nowadays it is little more than a ruin, standing on a hill, 711 metres above sea level, just outside Arenas itself. More evidence of the area’s importance during Islamic rule can be found at the Santa Catalina Mártir church, which stands on the site of a mosque. A church has been there since 1505 and it was a mosque between the 12th and 13th centuries. The church was rebuilt after a fire devastated the building during the 1920s and the original Mudéjar design and features were incorporated into the new building. The existing church was built in 1942 and is home to the statues of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth and Our Lady of the Dolores OUT AND ABOUT in ARENAS

which are processed through the streets of Arenas during Easter week. The villages of Daimalos and Corumbela also belong to Arenas and the church of Our Lady of the Conception in Daimalos, which dates back to 1700, also incorporates Mudéjar architecture. At the end of the 20th Century a series of 18th Century frescoes were discovered on the walls of the church, which can be seen today. A walking route connects Arenas and Daimalos, along which a series of Islamic fountains can be seen; La Fuente Grande just outside Arenas, La Fuente Pintada, half way along the route and La Fuente del Amor in Daimalos. and Corumbela) there are a few foreigners, especially living out in the ‘campo’, most people who live there are Spanish and many of the residents rely heavily on agriculture and the traditional Axarquía crops of muscatel grapes, almonds and olives which harvested in the fields around the town for income. Festivals Arenas’s Feria (fair) always takes place over the second week of August, around 10 to 12th and is in honour of Santa Catalina and San Sebastián, but the biggest event in town is undoubtedly the ‘Feria de la Mula’ (mule fair) on 12th October. It’s so important that it has been declared an event of touristic and cultural importance by the Junta

de Andalucía and there is a statue of a mule in front of the murals at the entrance to Arenas. At just 12 kilometres from VélezMálaga, Arenas is easy to get to and the short journey is a pretty one. Once there you’ll be hit by the sea of colour from the murals. If you have time, you should try the walking route to Daimalos or up to the Bentomíz tower and Arenas is also the start of the Mudéjar architecture route, which also takes in Corumbela, Árchez, salares, Sedella and Canillas de Aceituno. Pick up some local olive oil and take in the tranquillity of this agricultural town or practice your Spanish by translating the quotes on the murals dotted around the town. Written by Jennie Rhodes

NURSES NOTES Who should have the flu jab? Flu is unpredictable it’s a virus that can cause mild or have very unpleasant symptoms. Certain groups of people are at more risk of potentially serious complications e.g. people with chronic chest conditions, bronchitics, asthmatics (especially if they use inhalers). People suffering from chronic heart disease such as heart failure and those with chronic kidney failure are amongst the ‘at risk group’ who will benefit. Patients who have Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions should be treated. People who are obese with a BMI over 40 should receive the injection as they are high risk of becoming ill from the virus. The injected vaccine can be obtained free for vulnerable groups through the Spanish Health system’s GP (for those who are eligible). Private clinics or the private GP’s offer them at their office or The English Nurse will visit the house bound. The vaccine is recommended for over 65’s especially with on going health issues. People in residential care are advised to have the injection as are care workers in order to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. Those caring for a loved one are advised to have the injection to reduce the risk of becoming unwell and unable to care or worse passing on the virus to the patient . Pregnant women should also consider the vaccine after the first trimester. Dispelling the myth.. No, it isn’t a huge needle ! No, it isn’t painful. The worst side effect is a slight temperature and a sniffle but that doesn’t often happen either... 44

WELLBEING

increasing tension As we get older have you ever asked your friends if they are taking any medication? It is common to be prescribed some sort of medication often for hypertension but do you ever ask WHY. The question is not why you take the pills but why is your blood pressure too high? Liken yourself to a water irrigation system. The cause for high pressure might be that the pipes are too thin or that they are clogged up. If the pressure is too low maybe there is insufficient pumping power. This is the same as our bodies. Our system is quite sophisticated because it is self regulating much like the speed limiter of a car. If you set the speed limit to a hundred kilometres an hour it will keep that speed increasing pressure and fuel consumption every time you go up hill and decrease if when you come back down. This is the same in our bodies through an intricate collaboration between glands, the most important ones being the thyroid gland and the adrenals. This means that every time you need more energy these glands will throttle up your engine at the same time your heart is a muscle and needs to do work in order to develop and stay in form. The reasoning behind the need for blood pressure lowering medication is that there is a limit to how high blood pressure your system will withstand without injuries. Although this limit varies completely from person to person and depends on physical condition in general, there are some calculated limits that are considered to be safe. Normal blood pressure is considered to be 120 over 80. That is a statistical figure from measuring the resting blood pressure of hundreds of thousand of people, but seldom does a person comply to those figures. Therefore a span of up to 140 is considered normal. The reason that the blood pressure can read high can depend on many factors. The higher limit is 140 for the time being but used to be higher, at least 150 was generally accepted but by lowering the value, in some countries as low as 130, the sales of 46

hypertension pills have soared. There are some things to be considered before you start lowering your blood pressure by chemical means. Hypertension is supposed to be a chronic condition. When your blood pressure is persistently high, over time, and provided that you know something about the cause, you may be eligible for the pills. The reason to take them is always a preventive measure. There is a definite tendency to be too quick in prescribing this medication. Over the last few weeks we were visited at the clinic by a lady who is on medication because her blood pressure was over 180. The reason was not investigated. It turned out that she was suffering from acute anxiety due to family troubles. Once we guided her to handle the anxiety, the blood pressure dropped to 115 without the need for pills! A common explanation is that blood pressure goes up with age and heritage. A far more simple reason is that with age we move less, get overweight and adopt lifestyles that harm us. One of the lifestyles that really harm us is that we drink far too little water. The amount of water affects blood pressure a lot. The quickest solution is to start medicating but the correct solution is to drink more water and see if the problem corrects itself. All blood pressure medicines causes tiredness. Many doctors solve this by giving you a different medicine or by giving you two types of pills to fool the body that everything is okay. Find the your reason. At Pies y Bienestar we are ready to support you on corporal, mental and social health. Visit us at the Nerja clinic, Pies y Bienestar, C/Pintada 73 Tel.: 722 221 299

That Spanish children traditionally leave shoes out on the evening of 5th January for the three kings to fill with presents. It is the day that the three Kings, or Wise Men, are said to have arrived at the Nativity scene, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for the baby Jesus. Many towns and cities have ‘cabalgatas’ or processions in which the kings and other characters parade through the streets giving out sweets. Like in the UK and other countries, if children have been naughty, the kings will leave lumps of coal instead of gifts, so if you have ever wondered why sweet stalls at Spanish Christmas markets are full of coal-like candy, it’s so that parents can play tricks on their children (or perhaps that’s all some get, if they really haven’t behaved themselves!!) Kings’ Day (Día de los Reyes) is on 6th January, which is known as Epiphany in the UK. In both countries it’s considered the last day of the Christmas period and traditionally decorations are taken down. In Spain families eat ‘Roscón de Reyes,’ a large ring-shaped cake filled with cream and jellied fruits. Inside each roscón there is traditionally a bean and a small figure such as a king or baby Jesus. The person who gets the bean is supposed to pay for the roscón, while the person who gets the figure has the honour of being king during the celebration. While in the past presents were just given on Kings’ Day in Spain, more and more people are adopting the American and British tradition of Father Christmas (Papá Noel) as many parents believe that it is fairer to give their children presents then, with the two week holiday ahead in which to play with their new toys, rather than making them wait until the end of the holiday. There are some who still stick to the Kings Day traditional and some lucky children even get presents on both days! 48

FLAMES OF LOVE: TRUTH OF THE HOLY GRAIL Back in early December I was suffering from woman flu and decided I was not going to let it run on and on took to my bed for a few days. As usual in my life, the phone doesn´t stop ringing or pinging and on this occassion one of those messages was from Lady Blackwood aka Michelle. Michelle had picked up a copy of The Directory whilst she was here on a visit from Australia and she enjoyed one of the articles written about our monthly Out and About adventures and it prompted Michelle to give me a call. Michelle grew up on a farm in Yorkshire, and has spent the last 18 years in Australia, her father lives here in Spain which is where she is currently visiting and is where the story began back in 2010. Michelle is the author of her book call Flames of Love: Truth of the Holy Grail. A true story of her journey back home to Scotland, guided by the spirit of her Mum. In search of treasure buried in a previous life, during the time of King Arthur. Her book is being promoted in the New Year in many magazines and newspapers in the UK and Michelle asked if I would like to feature her book in the next issue of The Directory and so our diary of our day began when we met up just before Christmas for a photo shoot. So close to Christmas it was quite a challenge to get everyone in one place with businesses being so busy in the run up to Christmas. I needed to co-ordinate a photographer, hairdresser, makeup artist and boutique. As I drove to Nerja to meet Michelle on the day of it all supposing to happen. I had an anxious feeling about the day, and was not confident that everything would fall in to place, particularly as I had still yet to find a a make up artist ... for a photo shoot a pretty important part of the day! Anyway as you learn with life in Spain or perhaps just as you get older, sometimes it is just best to go with the flow and see what happens. I met up with Michelle at Ozzies by Elesha on Calle Pintada in Nerja and Elesha was already washing Michelles hair, Rob from Rob Bell photography turned up shortly after, phew stage 1 we were all there! Elesha did a fantastic job creating amazing curls in Michelles hair and all of us we were engrossed listening to the story of the book whilst Elesha was cutting and styling Michelles hair. 64

The DIRECTORY January 2018

As we left Ozzies by Elesha we had to find a make up artist. Talk about luck on ourside or great energy around us but the very first place we went into was Centro de Belleza Azalea, also on Calle Pintada. I have walked passed this shop 100´s of times but never been in. We walked in and right in front of us was a hollywood style make up area. Yolanda spoke English and had just had a cancellation and could see us straightaway ... talk about luck! Michelle relaxed back in to the chair and Yolanda went to work. Robs camera shutter was clicking away throughout the morning capturing the atmosphere of each business we visited. Stage 2 complete. We left Yolanda, with me saying I will be back ... I really fancy having a make over ... just need to find somewhere to go after I´m all glammed up. So now it was my turn, selfie outside the shop I am sure Rob rolled his eyes up to the sky each time I announced `selfie´. So off we went to Calle Diputacion to see the lovely Jaki from Jaki´s Boutique. She was now suffering with the woman flu but had kindly opened the shop for us even though it was her day off. What a popular shop she has, people never stopped coming in whilst we were there buying clothing and it was so much fun with all the bustling of us and the customers. Michelle found so many lovely pieces to wear and Rob got to work taking photos in the shop, as well as out about in Nerja. We ended at the Balcon De Europa where you can never fail to find stunning views to include in your photo shoot. I am sure we created some attention particularly with me holding the large light reflecting disk (I think Rob put me in charge of that just to stop me taking anymore selfies or inpromptu shout outs of we are``live on social media´). It was a lovely day and every part of the day flowed effortlessly, something I had not anticipated first thing that morning. We are all looking forward to reading Lady Blackwoods book and if you would l ike a copy you can buy one online through Amazon. A big thank you to everyone who took part in that day and helped to make it all happen. And wishing Lady Blackwood huge success with her book. HAPPY NEW YEAR
