LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD THE TANMIRT EXPEDITION 2018 The Hedgehog and the Fox The hedgehog took a stroll in the desert. Sun is high up and he lifts his hands to get a little shade. He is thirsty. When he finally reaches the well, his throat is as dry as the land around him. He reaches for the bucket to finally quench his thirst. The water bucket is further away than he thought and he finds himself falling down, deep into the well. After waving his arms and swinging for the rope, he reaches one of the water buckets and sits in it. What to do now, he thinks? Oh, well, at least it is cool down here and plenty of water! A few hours later, a face he recognizes appears at the top of the well. The Fox. - Hello dear friend, the Hedgehog says cheerfully from below. - What are you doing, the Fox asks? - I am enjoying a cool-off and it is simply lovely on this hot day, the Hedgehog says smiling. - Could I join you, the Fox asks? - Of course, simply hop into the other bucket over there, the Hedgehog says pointing to the black bucket on top. Said and done, the Fox jumps in and starts

to descend. The Hedgehog travels in the opposite direction up and they pass each other on the middle as the Fox exclaims surprised to his friend: – Where are you going? – Sometimes, life is up, sometimes down, replies the Hedgehog.
Where the horizon meets the silence, we follow a path from a time passed, on our adventure through the desert. When the sun sets, we gather around the fire, share stories like this one and each other´s company together with the moon and the stars. Welcome to join us and share you knowledge in exchange for Nomad wisdom this October 22-29 or November 5-12. HOME & GARDEN
HOW TO MAKE YOUR GARDEN GLOW? As summer begins, you’ll be looking forward to cooling off on your patio as day turns into night. Having the right lighting in your outdoor spaces always adds a touch of magic to your summer nights… The good news is there’s never been a better time to invest in stylish garden lighting in Spain. There’s so much to choose from, from classic Andalusianstyle chic to stylish contemporary designs, and from glass and Scandi woods to brass, zinc and copper.
Simple candles
Set the mood with your favourite table-top candles burning within windresistant lanterns, along with stand-alone electric or solar-powered lights, all perfect for adding a warm, romantic glow to your summer evenings. Miners’ lanterns might not be anything new but they delight all lovers of traditional, vintage-style design. Alternatively, in this part of the world, you might like to make the most of our neighbouring Moroccan influences and enjoy an exotic tin lantern, intricately carved, which shoots off rays of light in every direction. Battery or USB charged LED candles are all the rage as they are safe, often extremely realistic and they never go out, even on a windy night! modern look, they can sit stylishly on your garden table giving off a cool, diffused glow which lasts between 4 and 12 hours. An added advantage is you’ll have no cables on show.
Weather-proof festoon lighting Set a celebratory tone to your outdoor entertaining with wonderful weatherproof lighting festoons. They’ll look lovely bordering your garden or hanging amid the trees at your outdoor dinners or parties creating a soft sparkle to catch everyone’s eye. If you have a tall palm or other impressive tree or other feature in the garden, 14
The DIRECTORY June 2018
highlighting it with festoon lighting adds sparkle to the evening.
Solar lamps Perfect for outdoors when you don’t have a power source, these lights generally need approximately 5 hours of charging in the sun to produce 10 hours of soft or 4 hours of bright light at night. They are environmentally friendly and cost effective too.
Integrated lighting
garden
You might like to work integrated garden lighting into your garden design. Landscape lighting is a huge subject and quite an art form in itself; in fact, a professional lighting designer is always a good idea if you have a grand scheme in mind. Carefully chosen lighting can set off your design magnificently by night. I would opt for smart spotlights embedded in walls, pathways or around the swimming pool. Up15
HOME & GARDEN lighters do a grand job of accentuating any beautiful architecture, water features or sculptured plants.
Plug & play Many people who have invested time and effort into creating a beautiful garden like the satisfaction of finishing it off themselves with lighting. But if you shy away from heavy-duty lighting solutions for your garden, you’ll be glad to know that there are other, less complicated ways to light the garden. Plug & Play lighting makes it safe and easy to install your outdoor lighting - no electrician required! The system is simple: You have a transformer with a cable and connectors so that you can add lights wherever you want them. With a few basic DIY skills, you’ll save quite a bit of money by not calling in an electrician. Wireless, solar-powered lights are also increasingly popular for exactly the same reason. Plug & Play is so popular that it’s now widely available in many Spanish DIY chains and lighting stores. 16

Vetiver grass has many applications but its most common uses are: • Solving erosion problems due to its 2-4 metre root system • When planted near crops it increases fruit yield by up to 30% • Vetiver helps save water all year long • Vetiver helps soil quality and as a mulch increases topsoil by 1-3 cm per year • Vetiver is a natural insect repellant On established Vetiver no longer requires irrigation • Once • Vetiver is used to “clean” water Now is the time to plant Vetiver. The plant is indigenousness to India and loves the heat of the summer. If planted now you can expect to have established plants 2 metres tall by autumn. View our website for many applications and to see more examples of dated photos showing the results of planting at different times of the year.

TIME TO FORMALLY BECOME A TAX RESIDENT IN SPAIN. According to the Spanish Law all individuals who are living in Spain for more than 183 days a year are tax residents in Spain and have to pay taxes in Spain for their worldwide income. Many foreigners living in Spain permanently, (for more than 183 days a year), do not pay any taxes in Spain, or submit annual income tax returns. Some do not submit annual tax returns out of ignorance of the law, and others because they are afraid of paying high taxes. Everyone should be aware that ignorance of the law is no excuse, a Tax return should be submitted annually, and taxes should be paid when applicable by all tax residents in Spain. Up to date, the Spanish Inland Revenue has not been controlling the situation of those foreigners living permanently in Spain, despite the fact that authorities are aware of this important group of people. Now the situation has changed, due to the financial crisis, the Spanish Government intends to tighten up its control of all foreigners living in Spain to ensure that they pay taxes in Spain where due, and thus avoid thousands of people receiving free health services without paying taxes and without having the legal right to get them. The Spanish Government has decided to be stricter with the legal requirements that allow people to get Spanish health cards. Unlike in the past, now it will not be enough to just register with the local Town Hall (called “Empadronamiento) in order to get treatment. Therefore, NOW is the time to formally become a tax resident in Spain by submitting your annual income tax return for the tax year 2017, This should be done during the months of May and June 2018. There are many good reasons for doing this. It will enable foreign residents to: 1. Confirm to the Spanish tax authorities without doubt, that they, the tax resident, is living in Spain, and paying taxes when applicable. 2. Have the legal right to receive a health card which allows access to the Spanish Public health system. 3. Avoid the 3 % withholding tax when a real estate property is sold. This tax is applicable to foreigners who sell a property and cannot prove that they are a tax resident in Spain. 4. Benefit from the inheritance tax advantages and allowances applicable to tax residents in Spain (i.e. no inheritance taxes between spouses on the main home). 5. Be considered a tax resident in Spain, thus avoiding the income tax applicable to nonresident foreigners who are owners of a real estate property in Spain (tax form 210). It is important to mention that most foreigners living in Spain are pensioners with low monthly pensions, so they should be aware that they probably will not have to pay any income tax in Spain as the result of their tax return would most likely be zero. However, it is still recommendable to submit an annual tax return, (even if the result is zero and no tax has to be paid), to enable them to be able to take advantage of the above points. CONCLUSION: If you are foreigner living permanently in Spain (for more than 183 days a yea) we would recommend that you submit an annual income tax return during the months of May and June for the tax year 2017. By doing this, you will confirm to the Spanish Tax Authorities that you are, without doubt, a tax resident in Spain, you will avoid any potential problems or fines, and will have all the legal rights that the Spanish Laws recognizes are due to all individuals residing legally in Spain and duly paying their taxes here. For further advice on this matter or to arrange a no obligation meeting to discuss your particular circumstances in detail, please contact us Jose M. Lopez-Avalos at Axarquia Solicitors. 20 The DIRECTORY June 2018

BUYING PROPERTY OFF PLAN IN SPAIN - INDEPENDENT ADVICE With construction commencing again and prices rising in most areas of Spain, many people are buying properties off plan. This can be a very good way to purchase, with payment in instalments until the construction is completed. Buying in this way in Spain is safe and secure, provided your lawyer ensures that a guarantee or insurance policy is in place. A revised law governing Insurance and Solvency of Guarantees of 20/2015 has come into effect to bring more certainty, with an insurance/guarantee system to protect buyers of off-plan property. The original law dates back more than 50 years in the Ley 57/1968 and needed modifying to bring it into line with modern insurance and banking guarantees. There are important changes to the previous law which purchasers relied on when a development was not completed. Before entering into any off plan purchase, your lawyer will need to check the building licence. All the payments, once the licence is in place, must be protected either by a ✓ Property purchases and sales bank guarantee or an insurance policy. The guarantee or policy must cover ✓ Offplan property purchases all payments plus taxes and legal interest from the date of payments to ✓ English & Spanish wills the date set for completion.
✓ Family Law
A lawyer acting for you and independent of the developer can advise you on the completion dates, effective return of monies if the developer fails to complete, and all other issues relating to your ownership of Spanish property. OUT AND ABOUT
OUT AND ABOUT IN ALGARROBO COSTA & PUEBLO Algarrobo sits in between places that actually belong politically to VélezMálaga: Caleta de Vélez and part of Mezquitilla (Mezquitilla is shared between Vélez-Málaga and Algarrobo councils). The costa part of Algarrobo is pretty much the stretch of the N340 between two roundabouts (Algarrobo and Mezquitilla). However, it is much more than the beach and various cafes, restaurants and ice-cream parlours seen from the road. Other points of interest on the costa are the two Martello towers; the 17th Century Torre Ladeada, meaning the tilted tower. If you’ve seen it you’ll know why it has this name. It’s like our very own Tower of Pisa! The 18th Century Torre Derecha (right tower), which is somewhat larger than its slanting sister, has steps leading up to it. The towers are situated quite near to each other; Torre Ladeada is near the Urbanización Centro International, which can be seen from 34
The DIRECTORY June 2018
also a point of interest mainly because of the Phoenician tombs of Trayamar, which were discovered in the mid 1960s by accident. The burial site and funerary objects, dating from the 7th Century, were uncovered while work was being done to a finca in the area. Sadly some of the discoveries were destroyed when work continued to the finca, however many were salvaged and can be seen in the Museo Arqueológico in Malaga.
the main N340 road and the Torre Derecha is up Avenida Torre Derecha, behind the Centro de Mayores.
Every Saturday there is a flea market (rastro) on the streets just north of the beach behind the area of the Ottawa events and celebrations hall. The costa also has services such as banks and a Lidl supermarket and is near to Caleta for Mercadona and other services.

about 3 kilometres inland and is home to the town hall and current tourist information office. However, Carolina, who works there informs us that they are looking to move it to the costa. On the roundabout at the entrance to the village as the bronze statue of a farmer, holding what appear to be avocados – one of the locally grown produce. The village itself is set on a hillside, so it’s quite a steep climb but worth it to see the houses which all seem to be built on top of each other and for anyone after a bit of retail therapy, there is a surprising amount of clothes and shoe shops - the people of Algarrobo clearly like to dress well! One of the climbs is up a series of steps, which take you under buildings and past houses whose façades have been painted with flowers. One could be forgiven 35

for calling the steps (I stole this from Rob and Sue Bell) “stairway to heaven” as they lead directly up to the village cemetery and San Sebastian chapel (Ermita San Sebastian). The cemetery is also home to the San Sebastian gardens, which are worth a visit (although closed on Mondays and bank holidays), particularly for their views over the Axarquía, including La Maroma mountain and the coast. The chapel was rebuilt in 1976 to replace the original 17th Century chapel, which had become a ruin over the centuries. Other chapels and churches in the village are the tiny Las Angustias chapel, which is really a very small shrine, at the top of the village and the main church of Saint Ana (Iglesia Santa Ana). Local produce Algarrobo’s economy relies heavily on tropical fruit such as avocados, mangoes, kiwi and lychee. Grapes and almonds are also produced and of course the famous Tortas de Algarrobo, which have been produced in the village since Islamic times. The cakes, which are popular across Malaga province and beyond, are made with sugar, cinnamon, aniseed, flour, olive oil, almonds and yeast. Algarrobo forms part of the sun and wine route around different towns in the Axarquía (Ruta de Sol y

Vino). Ferias and festivals Fiesta de la Quema de Algarrobo The big event in Algarrobo will take place this year on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of September; the 5th Fiesta de la Quema de Algarrobo. The event involves a historical re-enactment of the battle between the people of Algarrobo and the French during the war of Independence during the 19th Century. There will also be street processions, performances, tastings of torta de Algarrobo, mangoes and other local products as well as a tapas route. Algarrobo’s feria takes place over the first weekend in August. Hiking and nature There are a number of walks that can be done in and around Algarrobo and these include a 13-kilometre route from Lagos to Algarrobo, using the pathway that connects the coastal OUT AND ABOUT in ALGARROBO
villages of the Axarquía. A six-kilometre walk up the Río Algarrobo takes you past the Trayamar Phoenician tombs (these are signposted along the route). Another option offers a route from Algarrobo to the Castillo Bentomíz near Arenas. For more information about the routes visit the tourist information office or visit the townhall website: www.algarrobo.es To get to Algarrobo either take the Algarrobo exit from the A7 motorway and turn right for the coast or left for the village, or the N340 from either direction and you will inevitably drive to (or even straight through if you are not careful… keep an eye on the names on roundabouts), Algarrobo Costa. Look out for signs that will take you north to the pueblo.

IN WITH THE NEW
In our gorgeous area of Spain, some gardeners say we only have one real season – SPRING! They say it is the time of regeneration, renewal, surprise and delight at what has lain peacefully at rest. A time for development, for expansion, for renewal. Rebeccah Curtis has been busily working at exactly that in her Beauty and Wellness Centre in Torrox Costa. She knew it was time for new growth, time to build on past successful experience, and time to expand. After 27 years as a Therapist, and 13 years at the Centre at Laguna Beach, Rebeccah is re-launching! The builders have been hard at work, the painters have cleaned their brushes, the fitters have put away their tools, and the move back in was completed by the 1st of this month. There is a completely different look to the whole place. The reception is bright and new, the rooms are re-furbished and re-stocked, but best of all, there is a new team of highly qualified Therapists now that Spring has Sprung on Laguna Beach. Rebeccah chose Laguna Beach all that time ago because the Centre looks out onto immaculate, peaceful gardens rather than a busy road. There is little interruption from passing footfall, rather the irenic serenity suited to a wellness centre. A visit takes time out of today’s busy existence, space to recuperate from life’s stresses. Personally focussed appointments renew energy and regenerate both body and soul. Rebeccah’s approach to health and wellness is very professional. Each client, regardless of the complexity of the treatment selected, receives her undivided attention. Time spent on her couch is therapeutic in itself. She is highly qualified, experienced and committed to helping everyone to be their personal best; simply to be able to achieve a better quality of life, to enjoy life more and on a fuller level. Rebeccah continues to offer the best range of facial therapies and skin rejuvenation in southern 44

Spain. She has state of the art equipment and the knowledge to meet any need. Hair removal (waxing or laser) is fastidiously achieved. Her Pedicures and Manicures are famous, not least because of her meticulous hygienic practices which protect her clients from the hazards often encountered. Rebeccah, in addition to her beauty treatments, also offers numerous complementary therapies such as Reflexology, Indian Head and Aromatherapy massage. Sylvia Bowyer has offered The Bowen Technique at Rebeccah’s Centre for 12 years. She is one of the only full-time, fully qualified and registered Bowen Therapists east of Malaga exclusively practising The Bowen Technique. This therapy requires intensive and extensive study to qualify, and her continued registration with the British Bowen Association requires regular supervised hours. After an initial consultation or review of progress, each session offers the client gentle but extremely powerful muscle movements. During the following 7 to 10 days the subtle re-alignment and re-balancing of all body systems continues, resulting in an overall feeling of wellness. Many muscular-skeletal, digestive, respiratory and allergy conditions may be resolved. The new therapists joining the Rebeccah Curtis Wellness Centre will include Swedish Massage, Lymphatic Drainage, Master Level Reiki, Acupuncture, and more. The new Team will offer clients different approaches to wellness to meet the needs of clients with the strategy of their choice. So, with the joy that Spring once again brought to the Costa - the welcome rain, the verdant foliage, the flowering and fruits to follow - there will be a new experience in Beauty and Wellness with the rejuvenation of the Rebeccah Curtis Beauty and Wellness Centre on Laguna Beach. Rebeccah is excited and cannot wait to welcome us all back to renew our vitality; it is all around us, waiting to be channelled. Welcome to the new-look Rebeccah Curtis Beauty and Wellness Centre, Laguna Beach. Follow our Facebook page ‘Rebeccah Curtis Beauty and Wellness Centre’. From Snap Shot to Great Shot
5 Tips to Take Your Landscape Photography from Good to Great Part 2 3. White Balance When you are shooting landscapes, you will want to be shooting at golden hour, or the blue hour. These are the times of day when the light works really well for dramatic landscape shots. In the golden hours, the light will be warm tones of yellow, orange, or red. Check your white balance setting when you are shooting at this time. If your camera is set to Auto White Balance, it will cancel out much of the warm tones in your image as it tries to neutralize any colour casts you may have in your scene. If the golden hour light is really strong in your scene, Auto White Balance will make the scene look really bland and colourless. Try and shoot on Daylight White Balance instead. That way, the camera will be capturing the light as it truly is in the scene. You could even turn your white balance to cloudy or shade to enhance the warm tones even more. Use this settings as a creative tool, it can really make a good impact on your image. 4. Movement Some of the best landscape images have some form of movement in them. The movement can be caused by water, wind, or both. Subjects that work well with movement are rivers, waterfalls, seascapes and even stars. A long exposure image of the sea with water looking all silky and wispy is ethereal, and adds drama to the image. We don’t see this smooth silky water naturally with our eyes, it is only possible with the camera. The results are often very appealing, and it gives a serenity to the scene that is almost magical. You will need a tripod to get this right, you will also need to use a longer exposure of a few seconds. Timing is also important, particularly with seascapes. You may have to time the shot for when the water comes rushing over the rocks, or up the beach. That way, the image will be filled with silky streaks of water and it will look amazing. Final part next month happy shooting, Rob Rob Bell Photography. Capturing a Moment in Time. 47 www.robbell.photography
That the Axarquía raisin, which comes from the area’s Muscatel grape and is known as ‘uva pasa moscatel ’ in Spanish, was officially recognised by the United Nations at the end of April? It’s not just the raisins that are now international celebrities, but the centuries-old, organic cultivation system that is used to produce the little, sweet treat in this area. The FAO’s (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN) criteria for awarding this status to a particular crop or growing system include: its historic importance to the development of world agriculture; role in supporting livelihood security; biodiversity; use of know-how and adapted technology; culture; and outstanding landscapes. Representatives from the area, including two of our local mayors; Antonio Muñoz, Mayor of Moclinejo and José Gámez Gutiérrez, Mayor of Almáchar attended a ceremony at FAO´s headquarters to receive an official certificate. The recognition
48

means that the system is now one of the FAO’s Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS). Mayors and other officials said that the recognition was fantastic news for the local economy and paid tribute to the people who work and have worked in the industry as well as their families. Our corner of Malaga province is the main Muscatel raisin producing area in Spain and evidence of production goes back to Phoenicians times. There is even a Ruta de la Pasa (raisin route) which takes in the main grapeproducing villages in the Axarquía and the grapes are also used to produce the delicious sweet local wine, often known locally as ‘vino del terreno’ – literally ‘wine of the land’. So next time you use Muscatel raisins in your cooking, buy local grapes or swig a glass of local wine, remember that you are consuming a VIP (Very Important Pasa- sorry, couldn’t resist..) For further information on GIAHS and the FAO’s decision to award the status to the Axarquía visit: www.fao. org/giahs

Barbecued Bacon-Wrapped Hake, `Pesto’ Courgetti Ingredients: Serves 4
This a delicious dinner party syle BBQ dish – perfect for any occasion. It’s one of those recipes too where meat pairs perfectly with fish. The bacon or pancetta protects the fish from drying out as it cooks as well as adding extra flavor. The traditionally Italian pesto is given a tasty Spanish twist using Manchego – use the aged for extra flavor and the toasted almonds. Enjoy! Ingredients: 16 rashers streaky bacon or pancetta (about 150g) 600g hake loin (Merluza in Spanish) 2 large handfuls of rocket or mixed watercress, spinach & rocket 2 cloves garlic, crushed Pinch of sea salt 60g toasted almonds 60g finely grated Manchego cheese 160ml extra virgin olive oil 2 medium courgettes (cut into ‘spaghetti’ with a spiralizer, or very finely sliced lengthwise) Pre-heat the barbecue for direct heat grilling. To make the ‘pesto’: If using a pestle and mortar, put the garlic in the mortar and grind to a paste, add the leaves and continue to grind up. Next add the nuts and grind to a paste, add the
oil, and continue to grind before stirring in the cheese. Set aside. Or
simply blitz all the pesto ingredients in a food processor. Divide the hake into four equal sized fillets. Lay 4 of the rashers of bacon on a large sheet of cling film, very slightly overlapping to form a large rectangle of bacon. Place the hake loin in the centre, sprinkle over the thyme leaves and wrap the bacon up and around the loin, using the cling film to help lift the bacon up and over evenly. Make sure the hake is wrapped tightly to form a long, openended parcel. Repeat without the rest of the bacon and hake. Lightly brush the parcels with oil and place over a direct heat. Turn every three or four minutes to ensure the bacon is golden brown all the way around. The parcels should be cooked in 8-12 minutes. Combine the pesto with the courgette ‘spaghetti’ and serve topped with a hake parcel. 63
